to the air. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here n new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. just four days to go until the first votes are cast in the 2016 presidential election. this morning, the candidates are making their closing arguments to iowa voters. where the republicans, a final pitch started last night in the gop's seventh debate, but in the latest twist in this sometimes surreal campaign, the republican front-runner did not join his opponents on the stage. marlie hall is in iowa. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. donald trump refused to take part in the debate and he is locked in a dispute with fox news over moderator megyn kelly and now instead of facing off

his own. in his latest attempt to shred the political playbook, donald trump organized an event to raise money for veterans and support for his presidential xant. trump told more than 700 people in attendance he would prefer to be at the debate. >> you have to stick up to your rights. when you're treated badly, you have to stick up for your rights. you have to do it. >> reporter: trump said fox news asked him throughout the day to attend the debate. they say trump wanted a 500 million dollars to address the event. meanwhile, three miles away, trump's opponents was three niles away but still the center of the attention. >> let me say, i'm a maniac and everyone on this stage is stupid, fat, and ugly. and, ben, you're a terrible

now that we have gotten the donald trump portion out of the way. >> reporter: trump's absence was a moment of opportunity for ted cruz and marco rubio, they are trump's closest competitors in iowa. the senators continue to spar over immigration. >> you said on the people here illegally we can reach a compromise. then you said we can bring people out of the shadows. >> marco made the direction. >> i'm not sure rubio is actually a credible voice to criticize cruz as a conservative on immigration. >> reporter: but the republican focused much of their attacks on hillary clinton, instead of each other. >> she is completely unqualified to be commander in chief. >> reporter: however, trump still cast a long shadow in the sin room after the debate. >> did you miss donald trump out there debate? >> not at all. man, that was the best debate we

>> this is not about trump and this is not about me. this is about america and the problems that we face. >> reporter: but trump's decision to boycott could alienate some voters. >> it felt like he was running away from fox news a little bit. >> reporter: trump says his event raised more than $6 million for veterans. his campaign hasn't released which groups the money will go to. now despite being absent from the campaign stage, donald trump was still the most talked about candidate on social media last night, but what really matters now is getting the votes out. monday's caucuses will be the first time voters have a say. >> marlie hall, in des moines, iowa, thanks a lot. john dickerson will analyze the debate and preview the iowa caucuses, that is coming up on "cbs this morning." president obama made clear his thoughts on november's election. speaking to house democrats at

president said a democrat will succeed him because democrats focus on things that matter. vice president biden, considering the current republican front runnnns, was equally as confident. >> and, by the way, we may be given a gift from the lord in the presidential race here. >> bernie sanders releases a tough new commercial today and it's critical of goldman sachs and the speaking fees and doesn't mention hillary clinton by name, but she did receive $600,000 in fees from the wall street firm. this morning, a small number of armed protesters continue to occupy a federal wildlife refuge in oregon. authorities. meanwhile, as danielle nottingham reports, the fbi released video of the shooting death of the group's spokesman. we have a warning for you -- this report contains graphic video. >> reporter: new video from an fbi plane shows law enforcement stopping ammon bundy and several of his followers in two vehicles tuesday.

group's spokesman, lavoy finicum and bundy's brother ryan and t t others speeds away and over a road black and narrowly misses law enforcement officers. shortly after, finicum gets out and is seen reaching for his jacket and one oregon state trooper opens fire and the shooter killed f, nicum and wound ryan bundy. >> we did everything we could to bring this situation to a peaceful resolution. >> reporter: four protesters are still holding out, refusing to end the armed occupation of the malhuer wildlife refuge despite their leader ammon bundy repeatedly telling them to leave. >> ammon desires the occupation to end. >> turn yourself in. do not use physical force. >> reporter: bundy and two dozen others seizes the wildlife refuge on january 2nd to demand the ferguson turn public land

bundy and ten others are in custody and face a federal charge of conspiracy to impede officers of the united states through the use of force, intimidation, or threats. the fbi says the remaining occupiers want a guarantee that they won't be charge before they surrender. danielle nottingham, cbs news. on monday, the world's health organization will hold a special session to decide whether to declare the spread of the zika virus a public health emergency. don champion is here in new york with the latest on that. >> reporter: good morning. meeting in geneva yesterday, the u.n. health agency made clear its concerns that warns if not ntne there could be 4 million cases of the zika virus over the next year. >> it is now spreading explosively. as of today, cases have been reported in 23 countries and

the level of alarm is extremely high. >> reporter: the zika virus is transmitted by mosquitoes and may cause birth defects. until last year when with the virus was discovered in brazil, it had not been a threat to the western hemisphere. >> you have multiple countries in south america and in the caribbeans, so by anybody's definition, that would be considered a pandemic. >> reporter: so far, the disease has not spread in the u.s. and official here say, for now, americans who do not travel don't need to worry, but at least 31 americans who have been to the caribbean or latin america have been infected. it is such a concern in el salvador they are advising women

2018 and concern for the olympic games in rio de janeiro. >> thanks a lot, don. three dangerous inmates who escaped from a california jail remain on the run, but a teacher who allegedly helped them escape is now under arrest. snooshafarrin ravaghi taught english at the orange county jail and they say theydeveloped a relationship with nayeri. >> what we do know is she provided google maps, those type of things, to prepare for the escape. >> reporter: the three inmates broke out of jail a week ago. so far, there have been ten arrests in connection with the escape. ethan couch, the american teenager who used a so-called affluenza defense, is due to appear in a texas court today. couch arrived in ft. worth yesterday from mexico where he and his mother had fled in december. couch was on probation following

here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country. there's some new barbie dolls on the way. i don't know if you've heard about this but for many years, there has been a lot of criticism about barbie's physique being unattainable and a false image for young girls. barbie is now available in three new body types, kendall, kylie and chloe, i think. critics are shaming the new barbie and shares of amazon take a hit. jill wagner is at the new york stock exchange with that and more. good morning, jill. >> reporter: good morning. the price of oil rose for the third day in a row, that sent stocks on wall street higher. the dow gained 125 points and

disappointing fourth quarter results sent shares of e-commerce giant amazon into a tailspin. they fell about 14. >> announcer: in after hours trading. amazon made a huge profit during the holiday shopping season but less than analysts expected, in part, because shipping costs were so high. so far this year, amazon shares have lost 6% of their value. new york's attorney general says sales of conce and sporting events tickets are rigged. a just released report found that more than half of the tickets many events are likely held for industry insiders or, otherwise, unavailable to the public. third-party brokers resell those tickets on sites like stubhub at average margins of 49% above face value! and sometimes more than ten times the price! a former google county employee found a glitch that allowed him to buy the google.com domain. he realized it for a minute. he raved it was available.
