he appeared in front of a judge monday charged with first degree murder and abduction in the death of the 13-year-old who's body was found near the virginia board. the 19-year-old natalie keepers who is charged with being an accessory after the fact also appeared in court. she pushed a dresser in front of her bedroom door and climbed out of her bedroom window wednesday and disappeared. >> eisenhower used his relationship to his advantage to abduct and kell her. >> the relationship may have started on line. she was involved in a facebook dating site. police aren't commenting but her daughter had health problems, a liver transplant and had dealt with bullying. today the judge in montgomery county set a court date for march 28 for the suspects but the investigation continues. they have searched several

campus including a pond. >> amanda lamb, thank you. a high profile murder trial involving trayvon smith. physical evidence will be introduced to the jury, what photos are appropriate and who will testify against smith. he's accused of killing melissa hugins jones in her apartment in may 2013. the trial will be streamed live and is expected to last four weeks. a harnett county bank was damaged when a driver accidentally drove into a building. the 65-year-old behind the wheel is okay. two walls and a front door were damaged. stocks began the new month mixed. the dow dropped 17 today, the nasdaq ending up 6, the s&p 500 down less than a point at the time of the closing bell. the world health organization has declared the

it is rapidly spreading. 23 countries have confirmed cases linked to birth defects. the u.s. health officials have warned pregnant women traveling to effected areas and coming up at 5:30 we'll let you know what is being done. the e. coli out break linked to chipotle restaurants appears to be over. the most recent was december 1. 60 people became ill but the source is still unknown. following the out break they revamped food preparation at all locations. next monday all restaurants will close briefly for meetings with employees. shoppers have concerned about security after a weekend shooting outside a durham mall. wral ariel clay asked the owners what's being done to keep shoppers safe. she joins us outside north gate mall.

anything they could have done differently to prevent what happened here on saturday. >> how many years have you been coming to north gate? >> as long as it's been open. >> since it was a little bitty mall. >> i guess about 25 years. >> some veteran north gate mall shoppers say the mall isn't what it used to be. >> so how has the mall changed over the years? >> disasterly. a lot of the stores have closed. the atmosphere has changed. >> they are working to fill the vacancies with diverse tenants and dealing with security issues. saturday night a woman was shot in the parking lot following an altercation. in 2014 police responded to another shooting in the parking lot. no one was hurt in that incident. >> all i know is you have to prevent the crime before it happens. >> virginia bowman says that's what the mall has been striving to do.

the shooting bowman says these things are happening everywhere. i wish i could say we could prevent them. we have 50 cameras. we have a trained security staff. it's our top priority to provide a safe clean environment for pate rones. he feels the mall is doing a good job and the shooting won't keep him from coming back. >> i consider events like that pretty random. >> the woman who was shot is expected to survive. i reached out to police. they are still investigating whether or not she was the intended target or an accident bystander. >> thanks ariel. durham police have not identified a man who was hit while crossing north roxboro street this morning shortly after 7 under the i-85 bridge. a man was taken to the hospital. no word yet on whether anyone will be charged. appalachians state police are investigating a sexual

three male students assaulted a female student early sunday morning. she told the officers the crime happened after she returned from an off campus party. in a statement on line the university said it's providing support with the victim and urging anyone with details to come and contact the police. franklin county deputies need help locating a 15-year- old girl who was last seen in brantley town road walking towards r and r food mart. she was wearing dark sweat pants a dark shirt and mickey mouse shoes. if you see her call the sheriff's office. a new free service being offered to every resident in durham. they launched a new pilot program today. every person who lives in durham can use the computer lab, fitness center and open gym for free. programs like dance classes will also be offered for free. he is usually giving
