surprises and frustration. senator ted cruz was the republican win bier while the race is historically close, hillary clinton is declaring victory. according to the numbers, vermont's bernie sanders is in a tie with hillary clinton. truz marco rubio had a stronger showing right on cruz's heels. >> he turned out according to evangelical and conservative leaders and it paid off. >> tonight is a victory for courageous conservatives across iowa and all across this a great nation. >> reporter: cruz parlayed a strong turnout to overtake a humbled donald trump. >> we finished second. i want to tell you something. i'm just honored. we'll go on to get the

former mike huckabee suspended his campaign. on the democratic side, hillary clinton and bernie sanders will likely bit iowa delegates. for your sanders it represents a huge comeback while for clinton it's yet another signal of a long campaign ahead. nancy cordes is following the democrats. >> reporter: hillary clinton was defeated eight years ago by barack obama and this time she saw her lead against bernie sanders evaporate over the past few months. this caucus last night revealed not just a generational gap among democratic voters but a real divide over which way the country should be headed. >> i stand here tonight breathing a big sigh of relief, thank you, iowa. i know we can create more good paying jobs and raise incomes for hard-working americans again.

shifted in heavy seas. new details about how three california inmates escaped from a maximum security prison, and the findings in an amtrak crash investigation. those are some of the headlines on the "morning news" stand. the "washington post" reports on the release of documents in the investigation into the deadly amtrak crash last may. the accident in philadelphia killed eight people and injured more than 200 others. investigators describe the cooperative. they have so far been unable to pinpoint the cause of the crash. the "los angeles times" reports on new details in the orange county yale barack. investigators say the three inmates got help from an accomplice on the outside who gave them tools and a ride to freedom. they also allegedly kidnapped a taxi driver and later got into a fight about what to do with him.
