afternoon. >> many of the children enjoyed an afternoon at home , the weather prompted the school districts to close early. let's go to chief meteorologist, greg fishel to find out what we can expect tonight. one of the scenes we didn't see was the great snow along the outer banks today. >> reports of 3 inches in some areas over there. we talked last night about that being the sweet spot of the system, if anybody was going to make out, it would be them. that's turned out to be the case. the radar around here, everything has wound down a bit now, we see a couple of patches there in martin county, east of tarboro, that is speeding away. looks like we are done with the precipitation. with regard to temperature, we are at or just below the freezing mark in most areas , the only years that are warmer, are greensboro and asheboro, they were able to pick up sunshine early this afternoon, there is the streak where most of the significant snow occurred, when i say

>> reporter: we are just south of lyndon this, is reefs bridge road, the accident came in, the call to the highway patrol 1:45, it did involve two vehicles. back to show you pictures this afternoon, investigators say the driver of the suzuki was headed north on highway 401, he lost control of his vehicle. we are told his vehicle crossed the center line ask slammed in to a honda odyssey. the vehicle was driven by 63 year old linda rainer, she lives in lyndon, the drive of the suzuki was trapped inside the vehicle, rescue workers had to cut him out and both vehicles ended up in the ditch. >> possibly due to the road conditions, with itbeing wet and icy. i lost control, came in to the on coming lane of the other vehicle who collided with the vehicle. both vehicles ended up in the ditch. >> reporter: the threat of the icy weather forced cumberland county schools to release students an hour earlier than expected.

and faculty questioned her lack of academic experience and others taken aim at her connection to for profit education companies. spellings vowed not to micromanage the 17 campuses, she wants to make north carolina a leader in affordable and higher education. spellings made it a point to students. >> the global knowledge economy, we are required to help more people particularly people of color and those from first generation and low income backgrounds to achieve at much higher levels and not done this well in the past and we continue to fall short now. >> reporter: she acknowledged in order to reach her goals, she has to build relationships across the board, foster trust within the system. >> people are going to stop talking about margaret spellings. >> spellings officially takes

the state expects to get that stay but is repairing for the other possibility. it created a special committee on redistricting and will hold public hearings next week. the first steps to a special session. if there is no stay, lawmakers return to work thursday. the 6 public hearings are set for 10:00 a.m. on monday at locations across the state. on tuesday, the committee will discuss the public feed back, and what needs to happen next. we plan on being at one of the public hearings next week, we will let you know what happens. durham public schools maybe cutting close to 140 jobs. 58 central office positions, 50 teacher assistants and 30buwo
