ertoasam welcome back to our continuing winter weather coverage. here in raleigh, we did not even see snow. we started off with freezing rain around 5:00 this morning the parts to the north did the snow. >> roxboro has a reputation of getting snow before anyone else does, but even roxboro has seen the plight of freezing rain this morning. let's check in with julia sims live from the county seat of person county. how does a look there, julia?
7:13 am
pretty much stopped any sort of precipitation. bill, i was just checking out the snow seeing if i could make a snowball but it is the kind of snow that just sort of falls apart. so, not very good for snowball making. as for the road conditions, you can check it out right here on 501 in north roxboro. you can see that the d.o.t. and public works crews have come through here with their plows, sand and salt trucks and done a really good job of this roadway. you can see a lot of the asphalt. but still, i talked to the person county sheriff's office. and in the last 30 to 45 minutes, they have seen an uptick in the number of car accidents. they said that could be due to more cars on the road, and because we did have a little bit of freezing rain here. so as we have been saying all morning, if you've got to get out on the roads, be smart about it. take your time, give yourself plenty of distance. and of course, if you don't have to get out, stay home on the couch and enjoy being under that blank and to watching wral.

>> reporter: good morning, i was looking at the road, take a look at 501 here in roxboro. they happen out here, a lot of traffic out here. so, in the plows have been out clearing the snow off of the roads, the sand and salt trucks have been out, it has been kind of a slushy snow up here. person county sheriff's office reported a handful of accidents about an hour or so ago, and i freezing rain coming down. hurt. and for the most part, it looks pretty nice out here. the roads of course can be a little bit tricky, a little bit slick with these conditions, but so far, there have been no serious accidents to report up here in roxboro and person county. >> that's good to hear, and it's nice to know that even though the roads look a little messy, it sure is pretty to see that snow on the grass, right? very picturesque in roxboro.
7:39 am
>> absolutely nothing pretty about the glazed road. i would like to have a glazed when will we get relief? >> not until temperatures warm up, probably after lunchtime. one thing that will help is at precipitation is lightening up a little bit. brian and i were chatting a few minutes ago, and he said we have not seen as many new accidents in the last 30 or 45 minutes, likely due to the lightening up. that's a good thing, but we can't promise that it's going to be okay until these temperatures warm up. right now mid-20s, very cold. we take a look at the radar picture, then talk about what letter amounts of precipitation then we saw an hour to two where you are. we will zoom around on the radar and talk about what we are seeing on the triangle. like and patchy, heavier than from durham right down to raleigh through the airport. but, from apex to holly

falling at the moment. we are showing some precipitation from roxboro to henderson but we just checked in with julia sims and she is not seen much of that reaching the ground at the moment. back over to the east from roanoke rapids north on up into virginia, by patchy snow. but the purple areas of course are where we are seeing that precipitation starting to move up to more freezing rain than anything. and then of course downtown -- down south fayetteville, referred to park apartment county, very little of that song at the moment. here's a look at the bigger picture of the radar. you can see earlier this morning, we had a nice band that laid down some snow. up to the north, that has tapered off a good bit. you can see how that has changed over in the purple areas, where we are looking at freezing rain and really a lot of that. as we thought that changeover to freezing rain, heavier precipitation has moved up into virginia. you can see how light and patchy it is from goldsboro,
7:41 am
moore county, too. here's a look at what's going on, of course, the traffic cameras really showing what happened. we have the beltline at six forks, traffic rolling, most likely from this slick bridge up here. just realized that no matter where you are you will run into slippery spots on bridges and surface roads. that's something you don't want to do. i was pointing that out earlier. i guess in some places, you just want to be really careful, keep yourselves far away from the road if you do get into an accident. it's 23 degrees, northeast wind that 6 miles per hour. feels the teens with the windchill, dewpoint is 19. messy out there. 23 in roxboro, 20 south hill, 25 in rocky mount and wilson. 26 sanford, 27 in southern pines and fayetteville. the only reason we're not hearing about more accidents down south because the precipitation amounts have been lighter. it has been heavier from the triangle area northward.
7:42 am
no matter where you are, you have a potential for slick conditions, anything that looks wet is going to be slippery out there this afternoon. what are we talking about? difference between sleet and freezing rain and snow, of course, we saw a big band north of the triangle as a slow -- snow this morning. temperatures were cold enough to the atmosphere. it was nice to start as the snow. but we had warm air coming in which is more poignant than cold air so it rises up above it. as the snow falls into this warm air, it melts and becomes a raindrop. than it melts into this cold player and if it is deep enough, it forms sweet, which is the ice ball. in this case, we have actually had more warm air. so that raindrop has not had time to freeze until it hits icy glaze which is creating now. we are expecting temperatures to continue to warm up and turn
7:43 am
meteorologist mike moss is in with me this money took talk about what happens after that. >> thanks a lot. i thought we would start off doppler 5000. you talked about how the radar trends are out there this morning but we've got a couple of reports over the last 12 hours or so where we did have the snow in more northern areas during the evening last night. for example, northwestern orange county, we had 1.32 1.5 inches of snow that happened during the evening hours. there were some other areas up around roxboro of course. we saw reports of about 1.8 inches of snow late last evening. of course after that further to the south and into the morning hours around the raleigh area, we had freezing rain kick in around 5:00 to 6:30 this morning. numerous accidents associated with that and similar reports to the southeast from greenville down to around bladen county. we have seen some of those areas with light glazing in spots that have led to some accidents. that can continue to be a problem, although we are
7:44 am
precipitation lighten up a little bit from the south and west. here's a look at what we've got over the last 24 hours, on the wider view of satellite and radar. of course, you can see the trend in general has been for most of the heavier precipitation to be across northern north carolina. right now, we're getting redevelopment from the southwest as well. that may continue off and on during the day today but probably pretty patchy precipitation in the south for us. the transition line has come to the north and is likely to continue on to the north because of high pressure that instead of being locked up in the northeastern united states and eastern canada, pushing cold flow that will air over here, it is slipping off to the east. and as we go through the day, he will get more to a southerly wind flow. all of that will interact with a frontal boundary off to the south and west, and low north carolina, as this front moves toward the north and the day. places seeing freezing rain this morning or snow in the north are like to change,
7:45 am
we take a look at future cast, you can see as we go through the morning and into the afternoon hours, we get into the 30s and low 40s to the southeast by early afternoon. low 30s off to the north and west and as we go to the nighttime hours, our temperatures really rising to the 50s by tomorrow morning. tomorrow, looking at 50s to around 60, entering the day tomorrow, precipitation band of showers will be moving out to the east. >> thank you. keep up to date with the winter storm with the wral weather app that will give you instant access to the forecast, look at watches, warnings or advisories issued for the area. just into the newsroom, johnson county schools will be close. they were on a two hour delay that have just made the decision to close because of changing weather conditions. >> the cause of the weather, 70 flights at rdu international, airport. mikaya thurmond is in live

we're looking at a really nasty stretch, lassiter mill road east raleigh. a number of accidents. slippery out there. >> this shows that icy glaze can create his problems. we are working to get more information, but this is a live look at what looks to be a chain reaction crash here, a lot of slip and slide and some collisions there on poole road in raleigh, we also saw a police officer there, on the scene.
7:49 am
slowly making its way down the hill, too. >> at least three vehicles involved, there's one to the right, the white vehicle. and another to be still on poole road smashed up. and, two different crashes, we understand. and it looks like there is somebody being assisted, who was involved in this accident. but again, this is just another example of just how bad it is out there. and it's good to have the raleigh police assisting. we will keep an eye on the situation out on poole road in raleigh. but just another example, folks, this glaze is a menace out there. >> that's right. our best advice, please stay at home and delay or travel as much as possible. we are just not going to warm up very much into around lunchtime.
7:52 am
oh, freezing rain, the pain you cause. at 6:00 this morning, we have seen one accident after another. >> the saving grace this hour is a lessening of the precipitation. let's go straight to elizabeth gardner. are we almost done with this? what do you think? >> is going to be light and patchy for a good bit of the day. as long as its light inoculating much more that's a good thing. but still, temperatures are in the low to mid 20s. in order to feel comfortable about conditions improving we need to get the temperature up a little bit more. take a look at the radar picture, you can see certainly looks lighter from durham and raleigh southward. there is still precipitation developing back to the south and west but a slight amounts. that is what we will see through the next several hours,
7:53 am
start to see conditions improving a little bit with temperatures warming up. but still, some precipitation showing up on the radar in the triangle area. we take a look at the other view of radar, you can see this morning that heavier bands that came through and everything changed on over to freezing rain, except right on up into virginia. of course, that freezing rain very quickly caused major problem on the roads. there's i-40 at us-70. you can see bridges very slick. i believe most of this up to brian, that this gives you a good idea of what is going on out there, those elevated surfaces are freezing very quickly. we do have that winter storm warning in effect until tomorrow morning at 7:00 and four-person and orange counties. the rest of the viewing area in the winter weather advisory until 7:00 p.m. it will take a while before conditions improve. because of cold temperatures, even not lunchtime, below freezing. by midafternoon we come above freezing.
7:54 am
on and off this afternoon tonight and heavy rain tomorrow morning for the morning commute which is an issue for tomorrow. in the meantime, of course, brian is dealing with so many slick spots but most of these are on bridges, correct? >> that is mostly what we have seen although cannot rule out icy spots on surface temperatures because of soil temperatures being so low. bridges have been a big problem here at 7:55. let's take a look at i-40 on the clayton bypass, the ramp from that was blocked for a little while. you see this accident here and how slowly cars are moving across that. it looks like it is just what but that is a sheet of ice on that bridge. that is a good indication of the kinds of conditions you're running into. this is 440 westbound, we have been watching this from sunnybrook road out toward poole road and new bern avenue. what happens here is cars go too fast, they hit a slick bridge and spin out over on the other side. the vast majority of the crashes that we see on a day like this are very similar to that set up.
7:55 am
and us-1 in durham. or, in cary i should say, this is westbound traffic heading toward the cary town boulevard. that is the bridge at us-1. thankfully not hearing about serious injuries with the actions but a lot of property damage. also heard about a couple of accidents in fayetteville, does not see my precipitation has been have enough to cause any problems. back to you. of course we have had serious problems in eastern wake county on 264 in an ideal area. >> wral's mikaya thurmond is in live drive 5 showing off this throughout the morning. and, look at that back up there. >> reporter: you can only imagine. it took us so long to even get to where the tractor-trailer accident actually was, just simply because of this back up. some good news, though, i can tell you that a tow truck just showed up a few minutes ago and loaded up the tractor-trailer.
7:56 am
but, i want to give you a look at the video, photojournalist darrell prior got this. what happens is that tractor- trailer hit and icy spot, hit the median, and two other vehicles also hit the cab of that tractor-trailer as well as trailer portion of it. everyone seems to be okay but of course, this has created a huge headache for anyone headed along 264. i continued is at a complete standstill. there is one lane open just to the far left where one or two cars have been going about every minute. but as for everyone else, they have been stuck here. again, good news, hoping that they will be able to get things moving in the next few minutes. >> i'm surprised if somebody was not seriously hurt. that looks pretty nasty. >> reporter: yes, yes. fortunately, everybody seems to be okay. and with traffic moving, everyone else who has been affected by this accident will also get moving. >> is there any precipitation falling?
7:57 am
freezing rain just picked up within the last few minutes. i got out of the car and walked around a little bit and it is just a complete mess. so now the second part of this is that they have to bring the sand and salt trucks to make sure there isn't any more accidents in this area. >> arielle clay on 264 in an ideal area, thank you for that live drive 5 report. a busy morning for d.o.t. crews that are spotlighting those problem areas, as well as law enforcement. highway patrol saying they are absolutely overwhelmed and backlogged with a number of

we saw were on the river bridge there in chatham county. i reached out to the law enforcement for some of those on collision. they set up a time, no serious injuries, thankfully. we are now heading into durham. it looks like there is a crash up ahead here that we are going to be passing. again, we are on the triangle expressway now. let's see if we can see it. right now, we are seeing the top of this toe truck. you're probably seeing flashing lights. at this point, it looks like there is an suv or possibly a sedan on the back of the tow truck that spun off on the bridge. we always hear that the bridges and overpasses are the trouble areas. there is a two door car on the back of the tow truck, looks like somehow it spun out. we're going to continue on to

back to you. >> those bridges are problem spots, but we have already seen slide out on surface roads as well. as you have been driving from chatham county here into weight county, what have you been seeing as far as precipitation? is it redeveloping? >> we have not seen any since the last time, it was probably about 30 minutes ago, maybe. so, we see where we are, into the county that we have gone through, it has tapered off. we have not seen much precipitation at all. >> keeping an eye on your windshield wipers, they have been quiet. thank you so much, arielle clay reporting from live drive 5. slick conditions continue to

slheth w the worst traffic morning of winter so far is a consensus in the newsroom at wral. >> the list of accident and crashes keeps growing and growing. let's get to brian shrader. >> a viewer pointed out that today is a federal holiday, it is presidents' day which probably has a lot to do with the fairly light traffic volume that we have seen. but still without light traffic volume have seen so many accidents. getting reports on twitter at wral traffic, thanks to chatham county 911, it really good twitter feed, keeps us up-to- date with what's going on, all roads in the 64 card are in chatham are a sheet of ice. that's what they're hearing from sheriff's deputies and fire and ems crews. the advice stands for

this morning, and as we take a look at the life , you can see we still have a number of accidents, especially for a raleigh. a few on the western side of the viewing area, but the majority of what we have seen as far as accidents have been in wake county with very icy bridges being the big problem. looks like we have maybe part of 64 blocked right now around checking on that this morning, that's what that icon means. bridges over there on the lake, you expect us to get pretty slick this time of day. also still following the delay from 495 or 264 on the eastern side of wake county. we've had trouble all morning long of slick bridges at one point a jackknifed tractor- trailer blocking new hope road, the bridge on 264. they working together cleaned up a we still have lingering delays. we got a report from if you are asking how 540 is, we have to more of your travel around glenwood avenue. at the moment we don't have any big delays the really, anywhere
