[laughter] we have a lot to watch here in next 24 hours, i'm hoping when i stand here 24 hours from now we can talk about in the past, we are fortunate and got off without too much. there is too much potential to ignore. we will talk about this in detail over the next few minutes. let's start with a look at the sky cam, things are just sort of damp and dreary and drizzly and foggy now. temperatures are generally in the 40s, from the triangle
6:17 pm
farther south, getting a hint of some of the milder air, nothing dramatic yet. goldsboro 50, same thing fayetteville, keenansville and clinton, that warm air is really going to start to stream in from the southeast, temperatures jumping first, in this area, the rest of us will experience the warm up during the day tomorrow. here is the big picture, pretty spotty light rain across north carolina now, the main system in the upper atmosphere, out of northet texas in to southern arkansas, northwest louisiana, severe thunderstorms, few tornados out ahead of it, this energy that's going to propagate across the southeast part of the united states, really start to play a role in our weather as we head on through the day tomorrow. let's look at the jet stream winds, this is up at 34,000 feet. nothing going on up here is going to generate an individual tornado.
6:18 pm
it can create a large scale environment, favorable. the oranges and the roads indicate where the jet stream winds are the strongest. look what begins to happen here, new colors coming in, means that the jet stream is getting stronger. sustained winds, 34,000 feet of 150 miles per hour, now if you are on an airplane and flying along, northeast, you like that kind of thing, it gets you to where you are going quicker. in the atmosphere when we see this nose, a jet streak, intensifying and basically aimed at us, across the southeast part of the united states, this means lots and lots of lift, that rising motion if it's violent enough, can really destabilize the atmosphere quickly and make it favorable for severe thunderstorms and tornados to develop. eventually tomorrow night, you see the jet beginning to shift out in to the atlantic, when
6:19 pm
we talked about the combination of wind sheer, and also instability, so this particular map combines both of those, makes it easier to digest and shows us where the two parameters will come together, with most vigor to produce tornado potential. 10:00 a.m. tomorrow morning, the potential begins to ramp up quicklies south and east of fayetteville and rapidly spreads northward, these black lines, basically indicate different thresholds passing through as we get in to the early and mid afternoon, with the threat perhaps peaking towards 3 or 4:00, once we get to that point, things should begin to slow down and settle down as we head towards the dinner hour and on in to the evening tomorrow. if we can get through the next 24 hourses we should be okay. we have an awful lot to watch, between now and then. even without severe thunderstorms and tornados, there are going to be sustained winds several hundred feet off the ground that are sustained
6:20 pm
just a normal wind gust could get you winds of that strength through the day tomorrow. you could have a tree down and never have a thunderstorm or a tornado. 8:00 this evening, drizzly, misty and chilly, temperatures creep up a little bit, late tonight, especially south and east of raleigh, becoming windy, very windy tomorrow, dra comately warmer, temperature -- dramatically warmer, temperatures getting to 7 or higher, mid to late morning on through the afternoon , the chance of severe thunderstorms and tornados. tomorrow night, becoming blustery and cooler, the rest of the seven-day forecast looks fairly quiet including peacock initiation on monday. boy, a lot to watch in the next day. very unpredictable acc season so far. we will look ahead at the schedule for the top six in the league. roy williams expands the talk
