loontowral.com we are excited and four days, wral will welcome nbc to the family. >> matt laur, anchor of today and someone you'll get to know well is live with us this morning from new york. good morning, matt. we heard you had the flu. it's nice to see that you're feeling better. >> you are the first people i am talking to since getting out of bed for four days so how does that sound? >> no seriously i'm happy to be back at work but i am thrilled about this news that we are joining forces next week. i can honestly say on be half of everyone here at today,
6:24 am
part of the wral family. we know you guys do it so well down there and if we join forces we can do it better together, but i want to say something. they have laid out something on the desk here for me and i think they believe that i was born last night okay? because they had had put next to me they had put three t- shirts here, all with prominent north carolina university basketball teams so we have nc state, north carolina, and duke. if you think that i'm going to pick one of these and hold it up, you are crazy. i've spent way too much time in your state to make that mistake. >> yeah, you're a smart guy. you are a basketball fan, we know that. and that's why we wanted to make sure you got those. >> well, i appreciate the gift. i'm an enormous you college basketball fan. i have been to games at each of
6:25 am
courts so yeah yeah i'm a huge state college basketball fan. >> he's a smart guy. >> you have to be careful of everything you say. >> matt we know there's some pretty exciting events coming up to cover as a journalist. it is going to be a busy year ahead. >> well we are right in the middle as you know of the election season, super tuesday coming up this coming tuesday. the last republican debate before that event tonight, so we're going to be talking a lot of politics today and over next several months and also if we look a little further down the road of course we've got rio, the summer olympic games coming up in early august that's something we all look forward to so yeah, a lot of things on the calendar a lot of things we'll get to be a part of together. >> matt we know you as the man with the big interview. what's your next big one going to be? >> you know, i always look at it as the next interview i won is the person who finds
6:26 am
story today, so it's tough to predict those things, there is certainly big ones that are always on the horizon but i wake up each morning and look at my phone or look at the computer and see what stories developed overnight and i want to talk to the person at the center of those stories when i sit down at this desk each morning. >> well, matt if you could holdup all three shirts if you are able to but it would make the unc, nc state and duke fans really happy. >> now i want you to take draw nothing from the order of which i'm holding these up. i don't want to get nailed for this, so i'll just say we've got the colors that you will all recognize all right? how about that? >> matt lauer, thank you so much. can't wait for the marriage with nbc to commence. >> thank you so much. >> can't wait to join the family. thank you for the gifts appreciate it. >> great talking with you matt. >> nice guy. people throughout the viewing area are picking up the pieces following yesterdays severe weather. >> tara lynn is live in one of

breaking news, we are under an extended wind advisory this morning, and that could mean more trees down and more power outages. >> that as north carolinians try to clean up today following a storm system that has caused widespread damage you're looking at live pictures from sky 5 over granville county. >> the same system turned deadly in virginia. new overnight word of the yet another victim from our state to the north. good morning everybody it is 6:30 good to have you with us we hope you're well and safe this morning . i'm bill leslie. >> i'm renee chou. it's going to be another blustery day.
6:30 am
tell you about and it's noticeably cooler let's get to elizabeth with all of the details. >> the rain is gone. no thunderstorms no tornadoes for today so today will be a day of recovery and clean up for a lot of people. it's very windy out there right now and i'm stealing one of brian's traffic cameras that happened to pop-up and i thought wow that tells the story well lock at that 401 you could see the trees flowing around. we've had gusts up to 30 miles per hour so far this morning and we may have gusts up to maybe 40 or maybe even 45 at some point between now and lunch time. after that the winds will start to die down wind advisory is in effect until 2:00 this afternoon and sustained winds up to 20-25 and gusts up to maybe 40 or 45. it still could have branches down maybe isolated power outages. 42 in durham, 43 in holly springs and 44 in wake forest. 44 in irwin and fayetteville as well as rocky mount and wilson and 41 in roxboro so temperatures are running warmer
6:31 am
year and very close to where we started yesterday. yesterday afternoon though of course our temperatures rolled on up into the 70s and we will not see that today. we have a strong northwesterly breeze so it's going to be blustery and chilly today. 52 at lunch time and high of 56 this afternoon. it will be cool for a few days we have several days coming up with temperatures down near freezing to start off with. we'll talk about how long that trend lasts coming up. brian is taking a look at the roads of course weather wise everything is quiet except for winds blowing around. >> apparently some clean up from yesterdays storms blocking a road in cary. as we take a look we have two accidents we're following one on the north side of raleigh at spring forest road at sandy forks road a minor crash in the clearing stages and also on 40 eastbound right around chapel hill road at highway 54 between raleigh and cary, not seeing big delays there. now in cary, penny road is closed near ten ten road what
6:32 am
and that's to repair some downed power lines from yesterdays storm. so penny road closed likely through the late morning hours, there is a detour set up there and you might consider using kildare farm and ten ten road as good alternate routes this morning. elsewhere we're looking pretty good on major routes and we'll take a closer look at the live drive times coming up in about 15 minutes back to you. wind gusts will only hamper efforts to clean up and repair damage from that powerful storm system. >> you're looking live from sky 5 on some of the damage up in granville county. we had reports yesterday of six tornadoes though none of them have been confirmed but look at that mess right there. wow, tara lynn is live up in the oxford area of granville county and joins us live. you've got your mere muffs on. it's a big change in the weather isn't it? >> reporter: it's certainly very windy and sky 5 is actually right above us, so this is sort of the ground
6:33 am
look at this house next to us, it appears that the wind esend is shaly came from this direction knocking a very large tree essentially taking all of its limbs off tossing it over here to this house into the yard and on over to this house next to us so certainly a lot of damage that homeowners are going to have to be picking up today even if their homes may be okay they will most likely have some yard debris they will have to deal with. let's take a look at video in the immediate aftermath of the storm yesterday where winds tore the roof off one home thankfully no one was home. the man who actually lived there was stuck in traffic as he was trying to make his way home during that storm. next door trees snapped and crashed on to the roof of another home. the son of the woman who lives there says his mom rode out the storm by getting into the bathtub and covering herself with a blanket. >> it's unbelievable. i never seen anything like it.
6:34 am
the news and other places but you don't think about it at your home. it's just it was a building, the buildings are gone. i mean that was a building right there it's not even there. that was a car shed right there it's not even there. >> now just down the road, sears dairy farm also sustained some very heavy damage. the storm destroyed two silos and flipped over some farm equipment. so as we come back out here live you might be able to make out something flapping in the tree there. it's actually a t-shirt with at least each of its sleeves wrapped around two limbs so peoples personal belongings literally tossed up in the wind, stuck in the trees, and that is just one example of the power of all of those winds and storm and damage that we have seen here. now the good news is that there were no deaths reported in our state because of that but certainly that doesn't mean some people are without devastation.
6:35 am
damage up in granville county thanks to you in sky 5. the story in durham was falling trees. check out this one on dlwood drive. a mother and three young children were at home when the roof was smashed in. we found a similar situation on rose briar drive and along roxboro road. the trees were jusno match for powerful winds. white the property damage was significant nobody was hurt. at the height of the storm tens of thousand of people were without power including more than 11,000 customers in wake county but crews have been work hard to restore power, we have about 40, this is the latest number 40 outages in wake county 955 in durham county and also some in orange county and johnston county as well. no storm death here in north carolina but new overnight there's now a fourth death from the storms in virginia. the body of a man was recovered near lynch berg after a funnel cloud was reported over the area.
6:36 am
two year old boy were killed when their mobile home was demolished in the storm. they lived in waiverly which is one of the hardest hit areas. coming up in our next half hour on fox 50 we will take a look at the other states along the east coast cleaning up from the storms. in vance county a viewer captured this video of what appears to be a tornado in henderson posted on facebook around 4:40 in the afternoon. pretty clear formation there. there was wind and hail damage, no serious injuries. the storms are blamed for damaging a home where a mom and her three children were taking shelter. the storm hit the mobile home on sanderson road and josephine garcia was inside with her kids ages 4, 6 and 11 when the wind blasted off the roof. they made it all out safely. red cross is opening them find another place to live. 6:37. looking for happiness and health? >> yeah, a new report suggests you may want to look south. the city that is the healthiest in america and where north
