you can see a red sedan roped off there with police tape. we will keep you updated on this story. roofs peeled off homes, barns and garages. bilings reduced to rubble. with in the last 30 minutes the declared a state of emergency. the national weather service has confirmed damage from a tornado. >> we were in continuous coverage at this time yesterday. tonight the focus is on the clean up. we are in one of the hardest hit areas. >> reporter: david you can see in section, it's still a mess. today was day one of the clean up process. three homes were damaged. the tornado took off rooftops but left dishes on the kitchen cub can board. folks today around here have been busy patching those

>> just glad nobody was hurt. the rest can be put back. >> reporter: still it has to hurt. >> yeah. yeah. it's sort of -- i tonight know how to explain it. it's tough. it's tough. we will get through it. >> reporter: dairy farm just down the road crews spent most of the afternoon trying to remove the rubble from two damaged silos. utility crews were out here today in full force trying to restore power as well as state and county emergency officials. they were out assessing the damage. they say it could be days before they have a total dollar amount. >> still breezy out there. thank you. chattum power crews spent the day working to get lines repaired and power restored. the bear creek community a huge tree crashed through a chain link fence. several trees fell on or beside

people were out at daylight to assess the damage and start clean up. >> it was worse than i imagined. i think it would be -- i didn't think it would be this bad. >> reporter: the hum of a chainsaw filled several neighborhoods. hear from people who came out to find debris all over the place. we are in the weather center with a look back at widespread impact of this storm. >> reporter: we had a two part deal as many of you know. starting around 11 we started to see this intense convection over the southeast part of the state and we started to pick up some warnings down in this part of north carolina. for the most part that was not what we would call a widespread event for the viewing area. then we got a lull as we went on through time here and got a break between the midday hours onto around midafternoon and

line that ended up spawning many tornadoes or at least warnings and a few confirmed and that took its time moving through. the cells were moving rapidly. the line was moving slower than that and of course as you can see here as we run this through a second time some of the most intense activity was up here -- around oxford and several other warnings that -- some of them on radar looked very scary and it was fortunate we got off as well as we d. as david and deborah said yesterday if you are one of the folks that had the damage where you were, it was a big deal to you. you don't care that it wasn't widespread. things quieter now. we have some snow over mountains. aside from that the overall pattern is quiet and we will let you know how long it'll stay that way. >> thank you. the damage was much worse north of us. at least two tornadoes touched down navav. three deaths are blamed on this

checking the damage this afternoon. dozens of homes damaged. several people hurt. the tornado that cut through waverly had a path nine miles long. the disappearance of a shaw university consistent gave jurors on the day her remains were found a man is on trial for the murder. >> reporter: today the prosecutor took the jury back to march 3rd 1997. the day that remains were found off united states one. it was just the beginning of finding out what happened. a pregnant 20-year-old shaw university student disappeared in 1996 her where abouts were a mystery for ten months a 911 call march 19th 1997 changed that. >> dispatched that -- someone had possibly found some human remains in the wood.

scene photographs that day show the wooded area off united states 1 where the remains believed to be mcqueen were found. >> i saw bones. i saw a skull that appeared to be human to me. >> what did you see? >> a makeshift grave. >> you can describe that for us? >> it was shallow. it was a skull that had come out. >> reporter: the boyfriend is on trial charged with her murder. the remains were found in 1997 doctors used dental records to identity them. >> they were identified as being that of the victim. >> reporter: it was hard to say how she died due to decomposition the medical examiner determined she was murdered. >> and formed this machine that it was a homicide. >> yes.

>> that opinion hasn't changed >> that's correct. >> reporter: coming up at six you will hear from one of the former roommates who said that the world was coming undone. a woman is facing charges after a crash involving four bicyclists. the state highway patrol filed donnie williams. she hit four bikists saturday. all of them were hurt. two seriously. the charges include reckless driving and improper passing. detectives returned to the scene of a drive by shooting to generate new leads. they went door to door talking to people who live in the area. trying to solve a shooting that injured a 72-year-old woman who was inside her home. time.

that's him pinning a girl on the ground. o'brien ordered taylor to stop recording. >> i didn't hear what he said. >> reporter: the video shows him doing more than just grabbing the phone. down. the student manages to get away but the 15-year-old jumps at o'brien who grabs him by the ground. >> i cried. that. >> reporter: his mother is outraged wants action taken against o'brien. her son was suspended for breaking rules about videotaping incidents liking this on campus. >> never had a phone call from the principal at my job. i was at work at time that my son had got hurt or was involved with anything. >> reporter: the principal said the video is only a snap shot
