> plusan in you know you found your true calling when you just can't wait to go to work everyday. that describes wral's teacher of the week. in partnership with the north carolina education lottery, lynda loveland takes us to capitol hill to meet her. >> reporter: we pulled tracy out of a meeting to surprise her as our teacher of the week. she has been teaching for 15 hope elementary. she calls her students, rettig's rock stars. them. >> i think it's really important to love what you're doing.

a group of parents is challenging a local charter schools dress code. parents states that girls only wear skirts, escorts, or jumper dresses. parents of the students argue that pants should also be an option because pans are warmer than skirts and also provide modesty while on the playground. a new innovative school building in nigeria offers a smoother commute for students who live in water communities. the floating school serves residents who live on stilts in the lagoon and travel by canoe. the movable structure is able to safely support 100 students and teachers, even in extreme weather conditions. this floating school offers free education and officially opened last november. some of you have seen that first light coating of pollen dust on your cars. you know what that means. allergy season. we'll talk with an allergy

looking into this rare deficit has been spreading across the americas and has been linked to birth defects. vitamin d during the months of pregnancy could help the bone health of babies born during the winter. 1000 pregnant women were asked to take it 1000 units of vitamin d a day, or a placebo for their best to try members -- trimesters. babies born to women who received vitamin d had a greater bone mass than those born two months given a placebo. researchers say prenatal vitamin d could help reduce the risk of breaking bones, both as a child, and as an adult. allergies and asthma which typically start in childhood are by far the most common chronic diseases among children in the u.s. joining us to talk about the signs and treatment

great to have you here. before we get into it let's talk about some statistics, about one in five in u.s. has allergies, and the most common type is hayfever. and, i thought this was interesting, if one parent has allergies, there is a 25% chance that that child will also have allergies. so, let's talk about what allergies are specifically. >> right. so, allergies are the body's immune system just being overactive to a particular trigger. people are confused by that. they think it's a disease but it's not. it's an immune response. an overactive response. >> what are some of the symptoms? >> the important thing is to know what the triggers are. you know how to treat it. but the symptoms are itchy eyes, runny nose, chronic, dry cough. you can get eczema. eczema is a form of allergies. you can actually get stomach involvement because it can affect multiple organs. the sinus area. >> you're talking stuffy nose, runny nose or cost.

allergies or the cold or flu? >> that's very confusing, some people come in and say i have chronic sinus problems. when we get right down to it we start talking about seasonal symptoms. pollen is a very bad trigger. we usually have a little bit of fever associated with a cold, body aches. you know, it is an acute symptom that lasts only 7 to 10 days. allergies can be around or fall or spring. >> it's not unusual for allergies to start in very young kids? >> very young kids. in fact, it typically shows as eczema in infants. fortunately those babies can outgrow it but as we get older and develop allergies, it is often a lifetime problem. jump on it. don't wait, but those beautiful flowers that you see on the trees, first sign of that, start taking allergy medicine. starting to have symptoms.

always have allergies. allergies can trigger asthma symptoms. and the common cold can, too. but, it is really important to keep those symptoms under control. >> i have noticed the trees budding as well and we can see the pollen. allergy season underway. thank you for the great information, susie. bill, back to you. >> thank you so much. looking at the gardens, i can't wait until the flowers are in bloom. it is kind of breezy out there today, isn't it? >> it is. the winds are costing 25 to 35 miles per hour. you can see the trees moving around. this is the view at the back door at our wral gardens. bill and i were talking about what a pretty shot this is. affiliates begin to bloom in early april but peaked middle april. we have a month to six weeks. we also have a whole bunch of pine trees back there. that's where we got that yellow pine pollen coming from. we are not seeing too much of

or so see a good bit of that. we take a look at the allergy update. we do have a high pollen count for trees, but it's not the yellow tree pollen. it's juniper, cyprus and elm. but, people are beginning to notice that sniffling, sneezing, allergic reaction to that pollen. it's getting to be that season. it is also feeling a bit like winter. 26 degrees in boone. look at that. and then 57 in fayetteville, and 63 in wilmington. we have had a cold front moves through. some of the colder air has pushed through into the 60s off of wilmington but they will see highs in the 50s tomorrow. 37 in asheville. it's going to be a cold night for us, all of that cold air back up into the mountains coming our way. i put the wind chill on here just for fun, certainly nothing dangerous, but it feels like 21 in boone. and it feels like 45 in raleigh and fayetteville. with the wind blowing it feels

39 in greensboro. satellite and radar picture, we will show that to you again. we have that flow coming across the mountains with cold air and wind is blowing again, 25 to 30 miles per hour. we are going to jump ahead to tomorrow because i want to show you this next system. it's going to be clear for the rest of the day today and tonight. clouds begin to thicken up. we start tomorrow at 5:00, about the time of our evening commute. still looking at clouds. when we get to midnight or so we are going to see plenty of rain. that will continue most of the night. we are looking at maybe a half inch of rain. look at what futurecast is doing. it wraps that cold air behind this. as it ends, it actually shows up, the snow over us. i don't want to make too big of a deal out of that, but it may be that from rolling northward, some of the remixes for a time, with some big fat wet snowflakes. it's not likely to cause any problems but we of course have a little bit of time between

be sure to tune into mike and greg will talk about that this evening. futurecast picking up the potential to see a little bit of a mix. then skies clear out for us on friday. cold air sticks around. i promised i would show you how long the cold air will be and when we see the next change. through thursday and frid, you can see those blue-collar condors. then we get into the early part of next week, it will stay close to the weekend. we start to warm up on monday, tuesday and wednesday. look at that warm air that starts to show up tuesday, wednesday, thursday. and all of next week. look at that, we roll that all the way out into next weekend with that warmth. once it starts monday and tuesday, looks like we will have five days worth of it. over the weekend it will still be chilly. we have the durham bulls fanfest friday and saturday from 11:00 to 2:00. it's going to be cold but should stay dry. the rain or maybe little bit of snowflake should be gone, most likely by then.
