this afternoon in the deadly raleigh officer-involved shooting. the preliminary autopsy report shows akiel denkins was shot four times and thely report suggests he was shot during a scuffle when he appeared to pull out a handgun. i'm deborah morgan. >> i'm gerald owens in for david crabtree. >> reporter: let's keep in mind, this is officer twiddy's version of what happened. as we reported over the last hour, he was patrolling an area of downtown raleigh when he recognized den kips. he knew denkins was wantedded on an outstanding felony drug charge i'm foot chase started according] to the police report, officer twiddy chased him to the area of bragg and east streets. he caught up with them and they struggled. officer twiddy says denkins pulled a hand began from his

at that point, the officer pulled his duty weapon and multiple shots. the report shows twiddy was afraid denkins would either hoot him or take his gun. he then stepped back and fired additional shots at denkins. the handgun found near denkins' body was reported stolen in january. this is no dash cam video since this happened away from the police cruiser. police are asking witnesses who saw the entire incident to come forward. they have people with various reports of what happened, some saw some of it. some saw other parts of it. but they are asking for someone who has seen the whole thing to come forward. now, officer twiddy according to this report suffered minor abrasions and is on administrative leave pending the outcome of this investigation. we will continue to follow this report as we get new information coming in. >> thank you. the preliminary autopsy results are very different from what people are saying at the scene the day of the shooting. amanda lamb spoke with the

live from the wake county justice center with what she has learned. >> reporter: that's right. in the minutes and the hours after something hike this, something tragic happens, there is a lot of emotion and sometimes, well, people get it wrong. and, of course, we're learning more tonight from that autopsy. we now know where denkins was shot and we also know how he died. in the moments after akiel denkins was killed by a raleigh police officer, multiinp people at the scene said he was shot seven times in the back. very different. >> there were a total of four gunshot wounds, one to the right chest area, one to the right forearm -- i'm sorry right upper arm, one to the right shoulder. >> reporter: the autopsy is just one piece of the puzzle.

information in what is a larger investigation. >> reporter: community leaders say they can handle whatever the investigation reveals. >> so the autopsy results, the investigation being concluded, all of those things will high pressure us because we are all operating off of speculation and what we believe and what we think. but we all wanted to know. we want to hear the truth. >> there is nothing about what the state medical examiner has found that matches with an idea that mr. denkins was shot seven times in the back. that is not their finding. >> reporter: now, it is very important to note that this report is still a preliminary report. it doesn't have all of the details. for example, the direction that the shots came to the shoulder and to the arm,s -- arms, that is not in the report. we do know, of course, that the shot to the chest would have to come from the front.

in the wake of everything that has happened today, a group of people have gathered in protest in downtown raleigh. wral's arielle clay is on her way to the scene right now. we hope to hear from her coming up later in the newscast. >> i wake county woman has tested positive for zika virus. it is one of five confirmed case as cross north carolina. all are travel related. the woman routinely traveled to south america and the caribbean with a zika outbreak is ongoing. state and local officials say the past experience with mosquito monitors gives them confidence they will be able to detect zika if it arrives here. >> any time we know there is something emerging such as this, this is part of what public health does behind the scene for people all the time. we are monitoring what is on the horizon and we are trying to address whatever those needs >> and our medical expert, dr. alan mask is here to talk about the zika risk. who can be tested for zika and

>> the state health department has very specific guidelines. we are mostly concerned about pregnant women. it's blood test so these are the people would can be tested. number one, pregnant women would have traveled to endemic areas who come back with symptoms within two weeksment they are all talking about women who have abnormal fetal ultrasound showing microcephaly or small head or calcification seep in the fetus' head. pregnant women returning from zika prone areas who don't have symptoms but they've been there within the last two to 12 weeks and also anyone, nonpregnant women or men, who are returning from zika-prone areas would have symptoms. >> since the local mosquitos don't transmit zika, how can people still be infected with this virus if they haven't been traveling? >> first, people who are traveling to those areas we're concerned about so many different areas, south meck, central america, plex co, the caribbean and so forth. so if you are pregnant or you are looking to get pregnant,

if have to go to those areas, make sure you talk with the health care provider before hand and take precautions about preventing mosquito bites which include insect repel anti, wearing long pants, wearing long sleeves, making sure that you stay up side as much as possible. those are the thins that we would mostly ad voice you to do. there is also, of course, human transmission. men can spread this to women via sexual intercourse. we know the zika virus can stay in the male semen for two months. remember that 20% of people will have symptoms. 08% of people will not have any symptoms. we are talking about fever, rash, a joint pain or red eyes, those are the classic symptoms. if you have questions, be sure to speak with your doctor about
