preparedness in north carolina. he's reminding that with the possibility of tornadoes flash flooding and severe thunderstorms, we need to have emergency plans, an emergency supply kit, and to pay attention to weather alerts. last year in north carolina, there were nine tornadoes, more than 130 incidents of flash flooding and more than 500 more than $12 million in damage. a research team in colorado is using a frozen lakes a lab. >> reporter: it's an unusual sight out on grand lake. >> this is an edial spot for us. >> reporter: a fully functioning weather state in the middle of a frozen landscape. >> we deployed those on glaciers and ice sheets. >> reporter: robb bauer is a researchers with cu boulder. and part of a team testing this proet owe type weather station in the middle of grand lake to see if it would hold up to conditions at the south pole. >> we don't want to take this to

the ocean, which antarctica until we got all the bugs, you know, worked out. >> reporter: that includes how it would fare as it measures frozen surface. now, we're kind of interested, too, in what's going on beneath the ice shell. >> reporter: at 190 feet, grand lake is the deepest lake in colorado and provides the conditions closest to what the antarctica. a camera on the weather station captures aimths in 360 degrees and the station transmits valuable data about air and ocean temperatures, wind speeds and even how fast glaciers are moving. all of that researchers say could be tied in the potential for rising seas. >> in, many r. -- many, many months of work as been testing it so you get confident to where this thing can keep going and going. >> that's going to contribute to us knowing more about an area as remote as antarctica.

be measured because of the work that is starting here in colorado. >> i'm so excited, i'm going to that same spot in july. >> yes, you are. >> but the snow will be gone. >> it will be a little warmer by then. >> i was there in the end of june last year, and it was so pretty. so you'll have a good time. >> i can't wait. i love hiking in the rockies. >> well, we have some pretty weather and beautiful parks around here. umstead state park. wherever you are, hopefully you're close to one too. you may want to get out today, if you can't do it today, well, you know, it's going to be beautiful for the rest of the week. now, we might cloud up a little bit on friday. we'll talk more about that in a w nus. we should be generating plenty of energy out there on solar farm five. a good bit of sunshine and you know it doesn't necessarily take heat, but it's nice to have these sun aye skies to help produce that energy there. it's 60 in raleigh, 61 in fayetteville. we really have amazing uniform
12:48 pm
61 in wilmington and in greenville. it's even 60 in boone the ski resorts i'm sure not happy to see that. i know a lot of our north carolina reports were hoping to go to end the march. that doesn't all happen. as warm as it's going to be, they may have to cut their season short. but if you're planning to go, give it a shot. they typically have cheaper rates. it's a little cooler in elizabeth city. one thing to remember, you know, as we start to warm thing up around here, people start to think about heading to the beach. but the water temperature is still rather chilly. it hasn't had time to warm up. so if you're on the beach, you're going to have that cold air coming off the water right to where you are on the beach. making it feel colder on the beach, than it would maybe even a few miles inland. so the beach is fun, but just remember early spring trips to the beach can still be rather chilly while it can be in the mid to upper 70s here, you're probably talking about 60s in the beach. we do of course have a little precipitation up here.
12:49 pm
holding that all off back to our west and warm temperatures rolling on in. too. of course it was a bit cooler over the weekend with temperatures in the 50s. today looking at mid-60s which are those green contours. but then we get into the 70s starting tomorrow. watch those yellow contours moving north. they make it to the ohio valley and pennsylvania. we're going to see very warm conditions. and it's not just our part of the country either. it's warm air all the way back over across the midwest and into the rockies. temperatures are going to be much warmer than normal. we get into those red colors on thursday, friday, warming us into the 70s. temperatures may moderate a little bit as we head into early next week. we don't get in those cold air. it may cool off slightly wednesday, thursday next week. but overall future cast really showing the warm temperatures next week. that's a rather early warm-up so
12:50 pm
it may be we see that pollen developing. we've had tree pollen on and off looking high. it was a little low toward the end of last week. but the yellow tree pollen hasn't come out yet. we might start to see that in the next couple of weeks. pretty weather, though, mid-70s for tomorrow. we start in the mid 40s. and then our morning lows go in the 50s. of course on wednesday and thursday, 77 degrees. and even though that seems very warm, the records this time of year in the low to mid 80s. so not likely to hit a record. but still we're talking about temperatures that will be anywhere from 10 to 15 degrees above normal. on saturday, we talked about the fact we may have a few showers that roll in. it all depends on how a system that is down in the gulf of mexico develops. before you go to bed saturday night, don't forget to set your clocks ahead. that's another sure sign that spring is right around the corner. we go back to daylight saving time. of course, we start to see the sunlight -- the daylight in the latter part of the day but not in the morning. you know, i hear on the morning newscast it's kind of nice to
12:51 pm
well, early next week, we'll be back to seeing the sunrise closer to 7:00. >> and that will always be a rough transition that sunday so monday. >> lose sleep. >> i know. we'll try not to be too grumpy. still ahead. >> i'm never grumpy. >> never. >> never.

our pet of the 0. doctors may wants to monitor their young asthma patients for anxiety. a small stud i reveals small levels of stress and anxiety were higher in teenage asthma patients. researchers say it appears asthma patients who experience shortness of breath and who often wake up in the middle of the night may be vulnerable to these problems. a new study reveals the majority of teens who misuse prescription stimulants take other people's medications. over 11,000 analysts said they had recently taken a stimulant and over half of them aadmitted to misusing it.
12:55 pm
doctors say misuse of stimulants can increase blood pressure, heart rate and body sleep and even lead to heart problems. with so many over the counter pain meds available, it's often hard to select the right one. aseat minutes are best used to ease pain, treat a headache or lower a fever. when it comes to cramps or ieb fro fin ibuprofen may be better. if you're at risk for heart or liver diseases talk to your doctor. if you want to try an alternative type of pain relief some options include acupuncture, yoga and cognitive behavioral therapy. >> how about bet therapy? . >> that works. >> best kind of therapy there is, right? >> how about luna? >> she would be the best delightful little nurse if you happen to be sick on the couch with the flu today. she's really tuned in. she would be out there running with you or she would right there at your side giving her tender little kisses. she's a four-year-old collie mix
