shook hands with voters during the town hall. laura, we're hearing cruz had a clear message. >> reporter: we're finally getting to hear it from him, because we haven't seen a lot of senator cruz so far this is the first of three events scheduled for senator cruz. the reason for that makes a lot of sense. north carolina is his best chance to score a substantial number of delegates in next tuesday's primary elections. an over flow of hundreds of supporters inside and hundreds more outside cheered cruz' every statement and booed every question from megyn kelly, as with most of this campaign, it centered around donald trump. he said he was establishment, and a liberal in disguise, and over and over again, he urged voters to vote for him instead saying he's the only variable race. >> if you don't want to see donald trump as the nominee, and if you don't want to see hillary

the primary. he does not have plans to visit north carolina, and bernie sanders, we've reached out to him to see if he'll visit the area. >> a poll was conducted by survey usa. wral kathryn brown is here to break down the numbers for us. >> reporter: the polls have 2,000 north carolinians and we begin looking at the democratic race for president. hillary clinton comes in with 57% to bernie sanders, 34%. now, while clinton leads in all four regions of the state, the race is tightest in raleigh, where only 15 point separates the two candidates. among republicans, donald trump leads in all four regions, cruz coming in second across the board. when voters were asked for the republican primary for president, donald trump coming in at 41%, ted cruz, 27%.

kasich at 11%. dhe you look at the demographics, they are very interesting. among tea party voters, cruz edges trump. trump narrowly beats trump by cruz within a margin of error. pro-choice, have a high school, or make less than $40,000 per year, that gap narrows to within ten points or less among voters who regularly attend church; are pro-life, make more than $80,000 a year, college graduates. coming up, we'll examine president obama's approval rating, how north carolina thinks he handles issues. >> and a lot of telling stats in the survey. thank you, kathryn.

interstate 40 in raleigh may have noticed smoke this after. a brush fire charred about an acre near wade avenue. smoke and flames were visible from our traffic camera. you can see traffic in the area slowed down at the time. authorities haven't told us what caused that fire. a wakemed employee was arrested for embezzling a controlled substance. arrest warrants reveal on several occasions, lori mcfearson, embezzled drugs she had access to because of her job. the paperwork indicates it began in january and the last offense happened february 8th. and the police officer charged in the death of freddie gray must testify in the trial. they agreed with prosecutors to compel the officer to testify against five other officers. porter's first trial ended in december with a hung jury. he'll be retried. gray died from a spinal injury after being taken into police custody. authorities are investigating a train derailment

one of the cars jumped the tracks landed in the area. mark burger has the story. >> reporter: it's being called an accident. no one was killed. >> we were all panicking. >> reporter: a four-car commuter track derailed and into a rain swollen creek. chaotic scene. >> it slid for a while. i wasn't sure if we were going to turnover or not. as soon as i knew we were stable, we started listening for the screams. people were crying for help. >> reporter: authorities say the altamonte corridor express train was traveling from san jose to stockton, when it struck a tree lying on the tracks sending the lead car into the water. rescues battled the fast-moving current. >> in front of it was submerged. there was definitely water coming in, down in the water itself.

another route for refugees, effectively closes at midnight, when do vain ian slovania requires a valid id. they are meeting in belgium to press turkey to allow migrants into europe. a massive fire kept firefighters busy this afternoon at a flea market. one person was rescued but wasn't hurt. the fire spread through the two-block flea market quickly. the roof which doubles as a parking lot collapsed during the fire. there were several vehicles and flammable items inside. it's not clear what started the fire. the better business bureau says trump is wrong about the ratings of trump university. during last week's republican debate, trump said the business received an a-plus rating. the moderator said it was a d-minus. trump said he received a fax from the better business bureau, proving the score had been raised. the better business bureau said they didn't send the fax.

did receive a d-minus and the grade improved in 2014. the fine for not having health insurance in 2014 is nearly double what it was one year ago. that's from h and r block. the average fine for 2015 is $383 so for, compared with the $172 for 2014. customers who received assistance are now having to pay some of that money back to the i.r.s. the average repayment is $579. state officials are taking back their recommendations to not drink water from some wells in lee county. tests are shown chromium, which can cause cancer a. municipal water systems across the state have similar levels of the substance and it is safe to drink. start times are changing for durham public schools. high schools will start later and elementary earlier. the school board signed off on

almost looked like snow in colorado yesterday. a late afternoon thunderstorm in fort collins caused dangerous driving conditions. they're going way too fast. one semislid on the hail and almost hit another -- semi slid on the hail and almost hit another truck. by tomorrow, the area should be back to sunshine with temperatures in the high 50s. it's 47 right now in denver so all of that is pretty much melted. looking like a snowy scape instead of hail scape so to speak. we're talking about the warmth around here. we did it yesterday with temperatures in the 60s. we're doing it again with temperatures in the 70s. our lawn looks so nice and green out there and the foliage is nice and green. we'll see the azaleas pop out in full color. what a great place to hang out if you're having a day. very warm at boone, 66. there's the 77, the warmest we've been so far today, 76 fayetteville, 63 at hatteras, the ocean temperatures are much cooler keeping hatteras, at 77 and wilmington.

west and it's only the beginning i think because of the way the upper level winds are indicated more active weather will remain in the west where the more calm weather will remain in the east. here's the way the jet stream looks nought. this upper level storm yesterday was across -- now. the upper level storm yesterday was across, now it's south and east producing thunderstorms across arizona, new mexico, mexico, and west texas. this area of thunderstorms will break apart and weaken as it moves into the ridge of high pressure and as this moves to the east tomorrow, new thunderstorms will pop up. we're likely to see more severe weather after this dies out and there's our ridge of high pressure, it's like a brick wall of air, and there are signs by the time we get into friday we may see a back door cold front move down the east cold bringing us cloud cover, maybe a bit of rain into the weekend. there's what's going on severe weather wise that big redbox, tornado watch spreading over into louisiana and arkansas, the individually highlighted counties. the ones in pink are tornado

severe thunderstorm warnings. this is so far for severe weather today. this is a tornado report near weatherford, texas. let me see if i can get the tornado report to pop up. just doesn't want to. there you go. tolar, texas, 8:21, reports of wind damage, tow, texas, you get the idea of all the blue diamonds are reports of wind damage, hail is in the green, and golf ball in the dallas/fort worth area, and of course with high pressure being upon us, things will be rather quiet. the other big story is the potential for flooding. all the dark shaded counties highlighted in dark green are flash flood watches, and the light shades of green are in flood warnings and look steamount of rain that is possible across the area. we're talking about greater than 11-inches across parts of western louisiana and as you go out from there, still impressive totals, 4 to 6 across parts of missouri near st. louis, up to three inches across the ohio valley and by saturday and

>> wral's laura leslie was at his event that wasn't quite as planned. >> reporter: in what appeared to be a pretty hastily mapped rally, fox news taped today. there was a campaign rally planned for afterwards but that didn't materialize because the senator had to get on the road. cruz hasn't spent a lot of time in north carolina this season but he is racing to fire up as many north carolina voters as he can. the reason is simple, delegate math. supporters lined up early for their first chance this career to see ted cruz in person. most of them seemed to be talking more about donald trump. anthony clay bourne said he started off as a trump supporter. >> he was saying he feel like needed to be said and then he was saying things like, whoa, nobody should say those things.
