we begin with a fire in an apartment complex. >> the fire broke out before 6:00 p.m. crews cleared the scenes a short time ago. that is where we find ariel. >> reporter: debra, this is what we learned in the past hour.

was caused by smoking materials that were improperly discarded. at the home where the fire started the windows are now boarded up. the man that lives this is in the hospital tonight and he is alive thanks to the actions of some of his neighbors and friends. the fire that brought several crews out started in the home of a man. he says he noticed the smoke coming from his neighbor's apartment. >> people go upstairs at the apartment that was smoking they come down, i told them to call 911. >> he checked to see if anyone wassed in of the apartment. when the person lived that was trapped he and two others went to help. >> he was in the kitchen with his back against the cabinet sink. smoke was like -- we could not see in there. >> they crawled in under the smoke and pulled the man out. >> reporter: he says his neighbor had burns to his face and scratches to his body.
