. powerful thunderstorms sweeping through the area for much of the night along with a threat of heavy winds. hello and thanks for joining us. ken smith has the night off. the latest warnings include franklin and nash counties. we want to get right over to the weather center where amy wilmoth is tracking. >> both those counties under a severe thunderstorm warning. wake county was under that warning, they dropped it early. the storm has moved out of wake county, but look at all of the lightning with this storm. it has been quite the lightning show. we had one of our traffic cams and some of our cameras showing this incredible lightning show. i don't have any that i can show it right now. but take a look at the radar right now. we'll zoom on into the storm that's moving into franklin and nash county right now. it is a very loud storm as it continues to move to the east at about 35 miles per hour. so these are still very fast-moving storms. also, i want to point out to you
11:01 pm
portions of the viewing area. but first i want to track this one storm that's over the lieu -- lewisburg area. that would put it -- if you're in the castalia area get ready for a heavy downpour. all right. now we'll go ahead and zoom on to that other storm towards murfreesboro. a lot of lightning with that. back down towards scotland neck. keeping an eye out to the west, we have another line developing. so we're not done with this. and we could have another round tomorrow. coming up we'll take a look at the potential for severe storms for our area tomorrow evening. >> we'll check back in with you soon. amy, thank you. and that intense weather likely a factor in multiple accidents along i-40 westbound. we have learned more than 90 cars was involved in more than at least nine different collisions.
11:02 pm
still for hours. candace sweat on the scene. you've learned quite a bit in just the last half our or so. >> reporter: katherine, you can see behind me, this scene looks quite different than the way it looked a cpl of hours ago. traffic now moving in both directions. you mentioned several dozen vehicles involved in these crashes. we're told between exits 147 and 153. at least 21 people sent to the hospital. take a look at this video from earlier. we've seen, or we saw throughout the night wreckers so many that we, in fact, lost count of the number of wreckers we witnessed taking cars away from these accident spots, trying to clear out i-40. we're still trying to figure out exactly what caused this crash throughout such a large stretch of road. but officials say that the wet roadways could have been a contributing factor. and then, of course, perhaps
11:03 pm
again, we have confirmed about 21 people sent to multiple hospitals throughout our viewing area. we spoke with one woman who says it was all so surreal. >> tell me how many cars would you say were piled up where you were. >> where i was, i would say at least 30. >> 30 cars. >> 30 cars. >> piled up. >> piled up. >> had you ever seen anything like that? >> never. never. >> reporter: and we are working and we will continue to work throughout the night and the of those injuries. you're looking at pictures from moore. she was gracious enough to share her pictures with us. she says the white vehicle is her vehicle. she says she is so thankful it was because she feels her son called her and said, mom, we forgot to pray. she says that's the only reason
11:04 pm
again, traffic appears to be moving smoothly tonight. still trying to get to the bottom of exactlyhy so many cars were involved in such a large stretch of road during this accident. katherine. >> incredible pictures there. thanks so much. a police officer from a d.c. suburb is dead tonight after a station. that officer identified as prince george's county police officer colson. investigators say a loan gunman shot him in an unprovoked attack this afternoon. the shooter was injured by police and taken to the hospital. he is expected to survive. a second suspect who reportedly took off when the shots were fired is also in custody. neither of them has been identified. officer colson was a four-year veteran of the police force assigned to the narcotics division. he was also sell bralting -- celebrating his birthday. a wake county deputy walked away unharm after wrapping his patrol car around a tree while responding to an accident.
11:05 pm
you can see most of the impact on the pane side of that vehicle. troopers say it happened about 3:00 this afternoon. the deputy was responding to a call when he hit a puddle during a rain shower and lost control. rescue crews are searching for a missin' man who disappeared while swimming with friends. deputies were called to shiloh landing on highway 258 north in princeville shortly after 4:00 this afternoon. they say a man was fishing with two of his friends when they decided to go for a swim. the man disappeared under water. his name so far has not been released but search efforts are -- continuing tonight. well, you know what that music means. march madness is officially upon us. today is selection sunday, which means get your brackets ready. in north carolina you've got plenty of local teams to choose from and pull from. mandy mitchell to break it all down. >> i always like selection sunday, then i moved to the

voters turned out for early voting. wral's layla santiago, explains that gets some insight at what we can expect at the polls on tuesday. >> reporter: the lines were necessarily short for this early voting period. meredith college political science professor says that's a big deal. >> it is significant. i mean, even though it's not a huge percentage increase, you just look at the number of people who are taking advantage of a shorter early voting period. >> reporter: early voting sites saw a nearly 3% increase over 2012. that's about 190,000 more voters. >> we have fewer days and more people. so it does show a real increase in interest in voting early. >> reporter: it could also be more interest in this presidential primary. can we use that as an indication of what we should expect tuesday? >> just seeing the big jump of almost 200,000 voters participating in early voting, it really is a sign that we may

the primary than we did four years ago. >> not only have we seen a shorter early voting period with higher voter turnout, the early voting period was moved up from may to march, many hoping to give north carolina more of a say. >> we'll affect the outcome on both sides. >> reporter: and candidates know that, that's why several are planning to be in north carolina monday for that last-minute push. >> polls have suggested even the wral poll that some people are still on the fence. >> reporter: each campaign now trying to convince that north carolina voter to cast a ballot on tuesday for their candidate. in raleigh, layla santiago, wral news. >> and wral will have complete coverage of tuesday's primary races. polls are open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. after they close, results will be available for more than 100 mobile. we'll also have live team

>ember this sassy little girl. 7-year-old dance sensation of raleigh was featured in tonight's features of nbc's "little big shots. " she was one of young formers who had a chance to demonstrate, show offheen. rembe vid o herda rpe wen of views online. you can watch little big shots on sunday nights right here on wral at 8:00. look at her go. i love it. >> she is just -- she is not shy. >> no. no. >> love it. we've had some severe weather tonight. you've been busy. >> we have. for the first time in four hours, we are warning free. that's not to say that we're done. take a look at radar and we do still have some thunderstorms showing up on the radar. these have contained a lot of lightning, especially if you look to the north and east. just in the very fringe of our
11:19 pm
lightning associated with this thorpg as it conties to move to the east. just moving through the murfreesboro area. continuing to move east and out of our viewing area. also some showers and thunderstorms down toward the scotland neck area. those are moving out. centerville getting a little bit of a storm now. that was a storm that was warned but it has weakened tremendously in the last ten minutes or so. then as you look back down to the south and west, we're watching another area develop down toward moore county. over toward trou ty. we have -- troy. we have some lightning strikes associated with this as well. so we'll continue to watch this area back to the south and west for the next couple of hours. hopefully we're done with the severe weather part of this. but we did have a major accident that candace was talking about earlier. it would -- happened around 6:00 in alamance county right here. if you do look we did have a thunderstorm. some heavy downpours. possibly the cause of that traffic accident. here's a live look at our raleigh sky cam.
11:20 pm
we had a lot of lightning though with that storm that rolled right over the airport. now reporting mosty cloudy skies. 68 degrees right now in fayetteville. 63 in roxboro. we did have one wind damage report. it was on glenwood avenue. just along the wake/durham county line. we had a tree down on glen wood avenue. and we also have ping-pong sized hale reported in franklin county earlier this evening. so we did have some pretty rough storms. here's another look as they rolled late afternoon and continuing right now. this is another area that we'll have to watch for tomorrow. this -- this has brought severe weather to parts of arkansas and missouri. we could have some severe storms associated with that system late tomorrow. overnight tonight, this is 1:00 tomorrow -- in the morning. wee could still have a couple lingering thunderstorms. the morning commute we could have some fog, maybe some sprinkles but we shouldn't have any severe weather.
11:21 pm
spotty showers. elizabeth garner will be tracking the rain. and then once we get in the later afternoon and evening hours, that's when we could see some more storms develop. we're not done yet with the thunderstorms. but it will turn quieter as we get into tuesday. so showers and a few lingering storms tonight. some areas of fog in the morning. it will be mild tonight with temperatures around 60 degrees. warm again tomorrow. we'll be in the 70s and 80s again with those thunderstorms most likely very late in the day. i think we do have a lot of dry time on monday. we do have the potential for some severe storms. a marginal risk for our area. if you go to the west, it's an elevated risk for severe storms. so we do have the threat for some severe weather. staying warm at least through thursday. but then we'll have a cold front that moves in thursday. and that cools us back down into the 60s by the time we get into friday. so much cooler next week. >> all right. thanks, amy.
11:22 pm
0. let's get started. now the brand hitch new pick three double draw. tonight's a white ball so that one comes out. all right. in the first pick 3 number tonight, it's a 0. the second number, 0. and the third number tonight, is 5. tonight's drawing is audited by the firm of thomas and gibbs. let's move to the carolina pick four. the first winning tonight in the carolina pick 4, is four. the second number 3, the third number nine. and the fourth number is 2. let's move now to the carolina cash 5. if no one wins the top prize tonight, tomorrow's night jackpot is expected to grow to $53,000. good luck, everybody. the first winning number tonight is 38. the second number 31. the third number 8. the fourth number 20. and the final number is 14. i'm amy taylor reminding you to

if the red ball is 0. this is how it all ended last year. duke, the last team standing. i can't believe it was a year already. out of the 68 teams in the ncaa tournament bracket. today, it all starts again. it is selection sunday the 2016th field is announced. it turns out to be a very good day for the acc. here's a look at the top seeds. kansas the number one overall seed. north carolina gets a one seed. so does virginia out of the acc. it's the first time the conference has gotten two number one seeds since 2005. oregon is the final number one seed. now unc was the preseason number one. they also won the regular season
11:26 pm
so it's really no surprise so see the heels as a top side. north carolina will play the winner of florida gulf coast and dickinson. that game is set for thursday at 7:20. it will be played in raleigh. quite a home court advantage for unc. this is the 15th time north carolina has earned a number one seat in the ncaa torn: that's more than any other school in the nation. just ahead of duke by the way. the interesting part looking at the east regional, there is a potential nor a match up with kentucky. and that would be in the sweet 16. that would be quite a game if the heels and wildcats can get there. the reigning national champs will be hiteling the road for the first two rounds. duke is the fourth seed in the west and they will have a fun match up with unc wilmington in the first round in providence rhode island. the game set to tip off on 1215 on thursday afternoon. duke heads into the tournament after a loss to notre dame in the ax cc torn. . this is the first number four
11:27 pm
that year, duke lost to purdue in the regional finals, way back then the blue devils would face baylor if they get past unc wilmington in round one. check out the reaction from unc wilmington when the team and many others heard they would be playing duke. unc w won with the chrome to earn a trip to the big dance. it's their first trip in ten years. they're fired up to playing a team from north carolina. >> you know, obviously we get a chance to play against duke and obviously everybody knows what type of program duke is. and coach k is one of the best in the business. and he does a tremendous job and you know obviously there's going to be a big test for us. >> one more north carolina team to tell you about. unc ash industrial eastern a 15 seed. they will play villanova. that game set for friday. it will be played in brofofull tournament n,
