victim and his wife had a baby and say they've seen the suspect at the house as a friend. now everyone is trying to figure out how this terrible tragedy happened. bryan walker was stone faced as he stood in front of a cumberland county judge escorted in by extra security at a home in the lands end complex off morganton road. >> when officers arrived on scene, the victim was discovered on the floor of the living room with a single gunshot wound to the chest. >> reporter: that victim was 27-year-old miles. they were apparently friends in the unit and on social media. neighbors say this is a quiet community, and they're shocked by the shooting. tammy scarboro says she just saw him the day before he was killed. >> he was coming from work, and he had camouflage in his face. we always spoke, said hello, you know.

>> reporter: investigators say the call originally came in as an accidental shooting but they quickly determined walker fired the fatal shot. police haven't figured out a motive but they say there was a party going on at his house and the one next door. >> there was some alcohol volved during these parties that may have play the a factor so we're still looking into that. >> reporter: now walker remains locked up at the cumberland county detention center. he has no bond. if he's found guilty he could spend the rest of his life behind bars or he could face the death penalty. and staff sergeant lewis cardinal was a camp lejeune marine in southern california. his unit manned the first fire

it just went up because it's all paper. helen's daughter had burned to death. and the story goes in a fit of deep, deep depression, she ties a rope to the side of that bridge, makes a nice, and just hangs herself along -- a nuce, and hangs herself along the side. and locals claim all manner of phenomena happened around here. it is common for the batteries to a car to die when they're around the area. i know people whose radios have gone nuts. i know a guy, he was on top of that bridge, unceremoniously relieving himself after a night of drinking on that bridge, and as it turns out, he had a sudden heart arrhythmia while he was in the middle of insulting her. to this day, he refuses to come back up here.
