5:05 am
there's your tenant. >> the perfect front. if anybody finds cattle there, the old goat won't know from nothing. >> better than a goldmine. and twice as safe. >> (snickers)
5:06 am
>> hyah! hyah! hyah! hyah, hyah, hyah! >> put your gun away. all we want is a ride into town. we'll be glad to pay our fare. partner. the ride's on me. hyah, baby. >> good morning, lovely se?orita. >> get away from there! >> why? from up here, you look so charming. >> i said get away from there. >> all right, i will. from down here, you look
5:07 am
>> oh, se?orita. i see you have meet my friend cisco. cisco meets all the beautiful se?oritas. i am pancho. sometimes they meet me, too. >> you get out of here or i'll scream. >> scream if you like, but this dust is very bad for the throat. >> you aren't desperados? >> disappointed? >> well, yes. i'd always heard of the west being full of bandits and outlaws. but so far, all i've seen are bare mountains and deserts. >> ah, there are other things in the west. >> for instance? >> i'll show them to you. >> from over there, please. >> (chuckles) you are a very clever se?orita.
5:08 am
>> hoo, hoo, baby. >> dad! >> paula, my darling little girl. my, my, my. you're getting more beautiful all the time. >> look, cisco, there is the man who kidnap loco. >> i guess we've better get started. we've got a long drive. >> hey, what did you do with loco? >> with what? >> you know what i'm talking about. >> you're a little confused. this gentleman is mr. bonnard of the circle o. >> he didn't tell us his name when he stole our horses. >> why-- why, i never saw you before. >> don't you dare accuse my
5:09 am
i'll have you know he owns one of the biggest ranches in this country. >> look, cisco. >> just a minute, men. where did you get those horses? >> it's none of your business. >> it certainly is our business! they're ours. >> nobody accuses me of stealing horses. >> get their guns, pancho! >> what happened? >> the cisco kid jumped us and stole our horses. >> cisco kid? that means trouble. i'll send out an alarm. >> i don't want cisco and his pal hanging around while this deal is on.
5:10 am
(gunshot)
5:11 am
>> now we will turn the tables upside down and do a little bushwhacking, eh, cisco?
5:12 am
5:13 am
5:14 am
5:15 am
plain, eh? >> yes, but he doesn't keep his gates locked. ?? uh-oh. a guard. let's ride over there and see
5:16 am
>> cisco, now we are mountain goats. >> look, pancho. (cows mooing) >> cisco, with all this ranch to eat in, why do they keep the cattle in a little canyon like that? >> i wonder how many heads really belong there. >> oh, cisco, you always want to make nothing out of something. >> maybe so, but why that guard over there? >> oh, he's over there to tell the cattle not to leave. >> or anyone else not
5:17 am
look, pancho. >> what are you looking at, cisco? >> this brand has been changed. >> whoever changed it didn't do a very good job. >> that's why they killed the steer and buried the hide. >> cisco, but this is a job for the sheriff, and we can't see the sheriff because he wants us for horse-stealing. let's went. >> no, pancho. that old man is in trouble all right, but he's not a rustler. he wouldn't waste his time stealing our horses if he had a business like this. come on, we're going to talk to him. >> we'll ship the cattle tonight to make room for the others we're getting next week. >> this place is sure swell cover to work from, boss.
5:18 am
>> we want to talk to you. >> i thought you had 'em finished off. >> they will be this time, for sure. >> now, sir, what is it you want? >> you know, cisco got a great curiosity. he don't like nothing he can't tangle off. >> now, when you came to our camp-- >> your camp? i've never been to your camp. >> now look, mister. i know you're in trouble. if you don't want our help, we'll go away. >> s we all go. >> i don't know what you're talking about. >> then what's the stolen cattle doing on your land? >> stolen cattle? there are no stolen cattle on this ranch, sir. >> cisco: i think you really believe that. that's why we came to see you. >> cisco, look out!
5:19 am
cisco, cisco! i'm stuck, help me! >> give me that gun. go on, get out. drop that gun. >> gentlemen, gentlemen, wait, please. these men have come to help me. this is my friend mr. kelly and my foreman, shelby. >> they stole two horses in town today. >> no, i'll explain that later. >> then maybe someone can explain why those men tried to kill me. >> well, i don't know anything
5:20 am
made a serious accusation. he claims there are stolen cattle in one of the canyons. >> i hope you're prepared to prove that. >> i can and i will. >> well, young man. i've been a lot of mean things in my time, but i've never wrestled and i've never killed, and if you can show me any cattle that don't belong here, they'll be returned to their rightful owners. >> i'll be glad to. come on, pancho,
5:21 am
5:22 am
>> hey. >> if those cattle are in red rock canyon like you said, it's that way. >> i'm going the back way. there may be guards over there. >> good idea, cisco. suppose we separate and come in from two directions. shelby and i will go this way. >> no, it's better we all go together.
5:23 am
because you set an ambush for us? >> so... it was true all along. there are rustler cattle here. >> pancho, tie him up! how is he, how is he? >> i guess i told the wrong man my troubles. i wanted you to think i was big, paula. successful. be proud of me. >> dad, don't-- don't talk like that.
5:24 am
>> go get kelly. i'll stay here and take care of him. >> he'll pull through. come on, pancho. there you are, pancho. just as i thought, it's a trap. >> what are you gonna do about that guard? >> we'll take care of him first.
5:25 am
pancho, you take his place and delay them in case anything happens. >> oh, that's a pleasure. >> tie him up. >> bueno. >> i wonder what's keeping him. >> maybe they went around up top. >> hey, al! you see anything yet? what's the matter with you? i asked you a question! >> i didn't see nothing! >> that's not al's voice.
5:26 am
those shots came from up there. >> (chuckles)
5:27 am
>> put up your hands, kelly. drop your gun. drop it, i said! they hang rustlers in this state, mr. kelly. >> well, what are you gonna do now, cisco? >> what do we ever do with them, pancho? >> oh, the same nu >> we'll take them to the sheriff. >> oh, take 'em to the sheriff, how different. we take them to the sheriff, we put him in jail, we knock them out, we bring them to, we tie them up, we turn them loose. nothing to do till next time, eh? >> (laughs) you'll be up and around in no time. >> s if the locking of the jaw or the gang of green don't set in, you would be out like that. cisco, why? (door opens) >> they're all locked up, every last one of them.
5:28 am
>> oh, you can't kill an old man like me. the only thing i hate is leaving this ranch. >> you don't have to. >> you wouldn't josh an old man, would you? >> i most certainly wouldn't do a thing like that. kelly bought the ranch in her name, remember? >> that's right. the owners of those stolen cattle insisted you keep some of them. sort of a foundation herd, you might say. >> oh, dad! now we can be ranchers, just like you always said. >> honey, you make me feel like yoot at last. >> maybe she never left your heart. (horses galloping away) cisco, pancho! >> uh-oh, cisco. you are playing with firecrackers. >> oh, pancho!
5:29 am
?? >> good-bye, amigos! >> see you soon! ha! ??
5:30 am
?? ya cheated! everybody here knows that! ya cheat! back off del. stay out of this. i know what i'm doing. your lucks thin kid. don't rub it too hard. you play with the men. now try and loose like one. (gunshot) alright now get him outta here. and make sure he doesn't come back. you're gonna be sorry tenner. i'm real worried. well you start digging cause i'm coming back for you and we'll tree this town if we have to. you're talking awful big for a kid with a hole in him.
5:31 am
come on everybody drinks are on the house. ?? ?? trackdown.
5:32 am
?? you the ranger? yep. i'm fred crate. del taylor's one of my boys. well we all got our problems. right now yours are bigger. that so? unless you want this town tree'd higher than a thunderhead you better believe it. maybe you better take another look mister you're in my office.
5:33 am
wait outside mike. go on! what have you done about tenner smith? nothing. what are you gonna do? nothing. i talked to the people who saw it happen. your boy got into a card game over his head. he lost, he got mad, he pulled his gun. that's all. he's lucky to be walking around. my boy says he was cheated. well that's not the way i heard it. well i don't know whether he was cheated or not. it's unimportant, i still have to buy his story why? because he's one of my boys and i have to take care of him. if i don't i come up with no trail hands. tell me ranger. how important is this tenner smith to you? he's a card player that's all. then give him to me. it's either that or toss him in a cell on attempted murder. well i'm afriad i can't do either one under the law.
5:34 am
you seem pretty sure. i am sure. right now del's out talking to the boys he's got em pretty head up. they're ready to ride through porter and tear it right into the mud. they want tenner smith. well they're not gonna get him. twenty four hours ranger. then you've either got smith jailed or we're coming after him. i think that'd be a big mistake. i do too. that's the way the boys want it and i have to go with them. now if we have to come in here maybe some of your folks will be standing close to tenner smith. they're gonna end up bleeding. eh the gun points two ways. i'd control those men if i was you. i'm the trail boss. i don't control them in town. the town of porter had been threatend before.
5:35 am
tenner smith had been in porter for a week. he and hoby had met, nodded, and gone their separate ways. tenner's story about the shooting had been verified by half a dozen people. and hoby had been satisfied. but fred crate's visit had changed that. morning mr.gilman. tenner. you want some breakfast? no thanks. how bout some coffee? yeah alright. oh miss? coffee. what's on your mind? well, i got a question for ya. i'd like to have the truth. did you uh turn clean cards last night? you know i've seen men die for that quesiton. yeah well there's a few who may die for the answer this time.
5:36 am
- what for? - attempted murder. says if i don't throw you into a cell this ah del taylor and the boys are gonna come in and take you. and a piece of the town along with ya. what does the law say? well i don't want porter wrecked. well you put it that way you might as well get yourself a new town because i'm not going to jail. you ever been in trouble with the law? well not so it cost me time. what's your name? the real one. well the first one's tenner. it's been that since i was about, about nineteen. that was when i made my first stake. you know the first good one. why tenner? well i was up in rawlings, wyoming. it was the first big game i'd ever sat in on. things were going real bad. i couldn't improve on a six high. then the switch was pulled and i came up with forty miles of railroad track.
5:37 am
tuck. well what about the rest of it? the smith. well i'll tell ya anybody calls tenner, i know they're talking to me. the last name doesn't matter. well what're you planning to do about this kid? just what i am doing. nothing. well i suggest you, uh, give that a little thought. mr.gilman, i left tracks in all of the dirt this side of the mississippi. i am tired of getting out of the way. alright tenner you're sitting in a good spot right now. if i can't talk some sense into crate's boys you better start packing. is that his name? crate? uh-huh. the next time you see him, give him a message for me will ya. tell him the last timee his boy was hit with a peashooter. but if he comes near me again i'll level a gun at his belt that'll kill a whale.
5:38 am
hoby! hoby! what do you want henrietta? word. morning ms. porter. ralph. alright henrietta what do you want to talk about? what's this i hear about tenner smith? well he shot a man last night. now how'd you find out about it? i have my ways. yeah so i see. well do i hear right? well either you give up tenner smith or this man crate will wreck this town. well there's a couple other ways. what are they? jail tenner. then there isn't any problem that's the answer. well he doesn't wanna go to jail. well then what are you going to do?
5:39 am
i think this kid has sold them all a bill of goods. and crate's got to stand where he is. can't back down without a good reason. it's up to me to find him one. and if you don't? well then you and the rest of the population better grab a handful of shovels and start digging a hole of piece. the people of this town start digging holes they're gonna wanna fill em with something. don't you be handy. ??
5:40 am
move out. you know i can't do that. now look at that badge. ooh, isn't that pretty? i'm gonna get me a badge like that. don't do that. how 'bout it, crane? you've got a big mouth, mister. ride into porter tomorrow, i guarantee ya you won't ride out. now, hey. hey, now i'm talking to you. get off. hold it! put the gun away, mike. don't order me. looks like you're getting tired fo playing trail boss, anyway. stop it! it was a fool thing to do! he had a big mouth and i didn't like it. alright, put him on his horse. tie him. you better hope he comes out of this all right cause i understand the rangers don't like their men kicked around used to be trail bosses didn't like their men shot up, either.
5:41 am
alright, if that's what you want. we'll ride into porter first thing in the morning.
5:42 am
5:43 am
5:44 am
5:45 am
5:46 am
why are you here? your horse brought you in and doc checked you over, put you to sleep here, try this. i promise nothing except it'shot. well, what's the matter? uhh, did you make this yourself? oh, you could turn it back in, there's no charge. oh, well, as long as you went to the trouble. you're welcome, mr. gilman. doesn't anything eve bother you, tenner? some. i figured out there are two kinds of things that cause a man to worry. those that you can do something about and those you can't. well, that's pretty profound. well, the things you can help, you should go to work on. the others you can't change anyways, so why force it? what kind of situation you figure this is? one of the former. i can do something about this. what? well, i've got a few friends... and when mr. crate's boys ride into porter, they'll find us waiting to entertain them you're wrong. really?
5:47 am
one what charge? making the worst coffee in texas how long do you figure you could hold me? long enough. you know, mr. gilman somehow i didn't figure that you'd back down to crates. i'm not. i'm just standing up for porter. morning! doing here at this hour? how you feeling mr. gilman? - alright. - you have to hit a head like that pretty hard, ralph. yes, so. i didn't mean that the way it sounded, mr. gilman. it's all right, what's all this for? well, that 24 hours that crate gave us is almost up i figured i better load these rifles, looks like we're gonna need 'em. no, we're not, ralph. mr. smith here is going to jail. he is? never thought that'd happen. neither did i. ralph? oh, well. they're here.
5:48 am
and his gang. they just road into town. - where are they? - at the buckhorn. - how many? - i saw four, but there could be more scattered around town. ralph, you go find judge henry and moon and tell 'em what's happened. - yes, sir. - if you don't mind, i think i'll just settle down in that cell now. oh, no, you're going with me. why the switch? i thought you wanted me in jail. that's right, when there was a chance to avoid trouble. but you built this thing, tenner. i thought you out to be around to pay your share of the bill. now get going, we'll be in the buckhorn. you want a gun belt? no, i don't think so. i don't much favor guns. seems to me wearing one is sort of extending an invitation to get shot. what about the deringer? i don't much favor dying without a chance, either. alright, now, henrietta. you stay here and keep out of trouble. well, it's a little late for you to be giving orers, isn't it? i'll give you an answer to that in about an hour. if there's any shooting, make sure they start it.
5:49 am
here they come. alright, now you let me handle this, y'hear? i don't want any more of what happened last night. just as long as you get the gambler. that's all we want. good morning. you look pretty good, ranger. after what happened. you're under arrest, crane. you and your men. look around, ranger. you ain't arresting nobody. get his gun. the gambler has one too. in his vest. get it. sit down, men. uh, barkeep? we don't have any service yet.
5:50 am
mike, get us a bottle. what do you want, crane? first, i want to say that i'm sorry for what happened last night. that makes me feel a whole lot better. have it your own way. you know how i feel about this. i don'tlike trouble anymore than you do. but i got stand backin' my boys. what is it you want? him. my boy here says he was cheated. that's a lie. take it easy now. that's what i aim to find out. tell me, ranger. if he was a cheat, would you jail him? in a minute. that's good enough for me. now we'll play a hand of stud. if he wins, he stays with you. if he loses, he goes with me. what does that prove? well, he's got two choices: jail or my boys and i think he's gonna take jail. in order to cinch it, he's gonna cheat. he could win, fair. yeah, he could. but do you think he's gonna take a chance on the way the cards will fall? suppose i say no?
5:51 am
get me deck of cards. make sure the seal isn't broken. you know, uh, we figured you sent for help. i hope they don't come in here and kinda ruin things. i don't think so. break 'em open. jokers? all right. now deal two hands. one for you, one right here. you, uh, you wanna put some money up? just to make it interesting. i think the stakes are high enough.
5:52 am
cut deal 'em. well, c'mon. throw 'em out. you got the straight, tenner? y'know, normally, that'd cost you a lot of money. different. it's gonna cost you. have you got the straight, tenner? cause if you have, you stay with him. if you don't, you belong to me.
5:53 am
you lose, gambler. sit down, del. that was the deal, wasn't it? if he les he belongs to us. you're a liar. what're you saying that for? he played the game and he lost. that's just it. i could see a man throwing a bad car to win a few dollars. but if he's ever going to cheat, he'd cheat to save his own life. tenner, you're off the hook. you mean you ain't gonna do anything to him? taylor, i've taken all i've gonna from you. you almost pulled the roof in on the whole crowd. when we get back to camp, you start packin' and gettin' i don't care where you go, you just ride and you ride fast!
5:54 am
well, if there was a choice, i'm glad it was him instead of me. you want me? no, i guess not. when do you plan to leave porter? like i told you, i'm through running. you better look around, tenner. he's not gonna be the last. you stay here in town, sooner or later i'll have to come after ya. maybe, but i've got one thing going for me.
5:55 am
5:56 am
5:57 am
(crowd talking, laughing) (?camptown races plays on piano?) (knocking) come in. oh, come on in, mr. gilman. tenner. what's this i hear about you buying - that's right. i know own the buckhorn.
5:58 am
look, tenner, it's all over now. creight's been cleared and as far as the law's concerned there's nothing more but, uh, i'd like to know the truth. did you cheat that kid? i told you that the game was hoenst. i can't prove it to you, but you'll just have to take my word for it. cut. do you remember what fred held? three kings. and i had an almost straight. mm-hmm. i coulda done it. i almost did.
5:59 am
and if i had to die, i was going to die honest. well, i guess i had you figured wrong, tenner. i don't think so, mr. gilman. but you'll have to be a little quicker. what?
6:00 am
[theme music] [neighing] that's the second one today. what do you think? we'd better get to some high ground. - if there's a way up there-- - we'll find it. i like a barber for my haircuts. [dramatic music]
