a guilty verdict in a 20-year-old raleigh murder case..... north carolina takes the next step in rebuilding its medicaid health insurance system... and.... a woman in raleigh tests positive for the zika virus.... it took 20-years for the case to come to trial, but it took less than two hours monday to find chris lawing guilty of murdering his pregnant girlfriend, lacoy mcqueen, in 1996. the verdict was read. investigators said he killed mcqueen and dumped the shaw university student's body in rural vance county, because he was upset about her pregnancy. her friends and family say they have been waiting for this day for 20 years. stephanie jones/victim's friend: oh it worked...rest of his natural life. the judge sentenced lawing to life in prison. the defense attorney gave an

notice of appeal. tuesday, north carolina took the next step in rebuilding its medicaid health insurance system for the poor and disabled. the state department of health and human services met a deadline to provide details on how they would turn over the health coverage used by one in five north carolinians - to private companies. health and human services secretary rick brajer told lawmakers the state was on track to lock down a finalaldraft by june 1st, but cautioned the federal government has the final say. 13:15:26 "we expect based on the experience of other states that this process could take anywhere from 18 months to 24 months to finalize getting approval from cms." 13:15:38 you can read more about the proposed changes to the state's medicaid system on wral-dot-com in the @nccapitol section. a newly released autopsy report says blunt force trauma was a factor in the death of a raleigh toddler. the report on wednesday does not state a specific cause of death for 2-year-old tristan blue, however it does

sharp and blunt force injuries. his father, steven blue, confessed to smothering the child last year. the boy disappeared from their raleigh home two years ago on christmas eve. county woman tested positive for the mosquito-borne zika cases across north carolina. all a are travel-related. the woman routinely traveled to south a zika outbreak is ongoing. state and local officials monitor mosquitoes and they are confident they will be able to detect zika, should it come here. dr. sue lynn ledford/wake county public health director:anytime we know that there's something emerging, this is what public health does behind the scenes for people all the time, is, we're monitoring what's on the horizon and we're trying to address whatever those needs may be. a cary woman found dead in her garage, was strangled, according to an autopsy report, released thursday. nalini tellaprolu was found by a friend on december 18th.

the raleigh police walks us through the officer's side of what happened. twiddy parked his cruiser here on mangum street after had a warrant out for his arrest. the west on bragg street on foot. then turned north on south east street. according to the report, denkins cut through two of the homes here. as officer twiddy continued chase, he slipped and fell on loose gravel recovered and caught up with denkins behind this home. that's where the struggle between officer twiddy and denkins happened. according to the report, denkins started to pull a handgun from the front of his waistband. the report says during the struggle, officer twiddy drew his weapon and fired

move his gun in the officer's direction. fearing denkins was going to shoot him or take his gun, the report says twiddy fired additional shots. then, it says denkins collapsed and dropped his gun.. and twiddy called for assistance. according to a preliminary autopsy report released by the district attorney's office today - denkins was shot 4 times.. including once in his chest, with injuries to his lungs and heart. he was also shot in the left forearm, right upper arm and shoulder. the da says nothing in the state medical examiner's report matches the idea from some witnesses that denkins was shot 7 times in the back.. but it's difficult to tell which direction the bullets came from. lorrin freeman/wake county da:19:48 if you think about how someone can move their arms around, it's difficult. you can't necessarily determine based simply on where the injuries were inflicted, what direction the shots came from. 20:02 according to the police report, officer twiddy suffered minor scrapes during

"we've got to have bigger problems in durham than deporting kids out of our high schools. the federal government has a lot of big problems to solve we want to help them do that but deporting kids out of our schools can not be at the top of the list." the teen's supporters are filing a complaint with the department of education because ice refused to accept schoolwork mailed to the riverside high school student -- and are not allowing him to use a computer. we checked with immigration officials-- and they claim they have not received any mail for guillen acosta. some parents -- and doctors -- are pushing to get a nurse in every school in north carolina. finding the money is a chronic challenge, and nurses often find better-paying jobs in the private sector. wral's bryan mims has one family's story, and what local schools are doing to meet the medical needs of students. "i remember i was in first period." the school day had just begun, when

"i can't speak. i can't react." isabel arreola is 13 years old, a student at 71st classical middle school in fayetteville. she has type 1 diabetes. on january 12th, her blood sugar level was in free fall. "i'm literally stumbling down the stairs because i can barely walk." in the office, she went into convulsions. someone called 9-1-1, and her mom. "if a nurse was there, she would have known what to do. no one in that room at the time knew anything." what she needed was a glucogon injection, but she left her emergency syringe at home. her father, arturo arreola, says even if she had it, he doubts the people around her would have known how to use it. "so when i got there, and i started asking questions, they had no answers for the questions that i was asking." bryan: "is it realistic to think we could have one nurse in every school?" johnson: "i think it's a beautiful dream." shirley johnson is health

for cumberland county schools. she says with no emergency injection, school employees did everything they could. she also says the district trains three staffers in every school to treat diabetes and other chronic illnesses. but they are not nurses. "each school has a nurse at least one day a week, and any day they're on call." cumberland county, with 86 schools, has 27 nurses. that roughly breaks down to a ratio of one nurse for every 23- hundred students. the state and c-d-c recommend one in 750. "although we would love to have a registered nurse in every building, i think we have a strategy and a plan in place that's effective. and it's keeping our children in school." "fast-growing wake county long had a shortage of school nurses. but in 2014, county commissioners voted to pay for 10 new nurses every year for four years. that will bring the total number to 101 nurses in 2018 serving more than 170 schools." bryan: "what is it like these days being a school nurse?" janet colvin: "the job -- it's busy. it's complicated."

more and more kids with chronic conditions -- diabetes, asthma, allergies -- are in the school system. "and then you think about the elementary schools and immunization, and who's checking to make sure all the immunizations are up to date? it's our school nurses. they've got a lot on their plate." doctor brunilda cordero is a pediatric endocrinologist advocating to put one full-time nurse in every school. "it's a disaster waiting to happen." "it's crucial to have someone who can really attend to these children immediately. for one family, it's an issue that became clear on that school day when everything ... went black. bryan mims, wral news. since last year, the charlotte-mecklenburg school district has been able to staff every one of its schools with a nurse. the school system has a contract with the county health department to provide the nurses. ul someone else have the same license plate as you? we reached out to the dmv-- which told us the case is a first for them. the agency then contacted that other driver.. who then turned in the expired tag! !!12:09:13 - 19 "i think it's crazy. i mean it's nice to know there's another dr who fan out there,with excellent taste in license plates" martin's message to that fan-- "nats- allons-y" let's go--- to the dmv.. 12:21:24 - 30 "get a new tag pay the fee.. not drive around with an expired tag" that was monica laliberte reporting... interesting to note-- the dot tells us there is not a penalty for driving with an expired license plate-- unless the driver is stopped by law enforcement, then you can be ticketed. a new service to encourage public transportation just launched in the triangle. ride service uber is partnering with durham-based transloc and transit buses, gotriangle. the idea is to bridge the "first mile, last mile" problem. that is, many people don't take public transportation because the stops are just a little too far away from home -- and from work. so they drive instead.

march 12th. tonight in our video of the week...a dash camera was rolling when a 2-year-old boy fell out of his grandfather's mini-van -- right into traffic. this happened in china. the video shows the rear door popping open and the child rolls onto the road. the grandfather says the boy got out of his seat and he did not know what happened. luckily, the driver in the car behind the van saw the child and picked him up. once the grandpa realized the boy was missing -- he turned around and the good samaritan returned the boy. that's all the time we have for tonight. thanks for joining

(chuckles) make sure she doesn't crack wise in front of the good father. he drinks, he's got a temper, and he's not a big fan of women. so where you having the reception? we found this place that's actually pretty nice and it's walking distance from the church. great, so i got to traipse around the dirty streets of chicago wearing high heels and a taffeta gown? i'm sorry. you're wearing a taffeta gown? not if i got to hoof it to the reception. wind comes along, catches my skirt, everybody gets a freebie. oh.
