wednesday. troopers say walid abu-hamra hydroplaned and hit a tree near jones sausage road. the 52-year-old was found dead inside the car around 6 a.m. clearing the scene caused backups during the morning rush hour. on thursday, cary police arrested a 25- year-old man they say exposed himself at 6 businesses in the last 6 months.. witnesses say 25- year-old christopher sumrell was well- dressed, polite and unassuming when he entered the stores-3 in the crossroads shopping ce in one of the incidents employees tell us he came out of the dressing room after trying on clothes and exposed himself to a sales associate. jutta richards: i guess he wanted to get caught. i don't know, just wanted to be seen. that's what i'm thinking. amanda: but he knew what he was doing? jutta: oh yes, definitely. all of the employees we spoke with say they were shaken by the incidents. sumrell was convicted of indecent exposure in cary 2012. he also has pending charges related to similar accusations

the man accused in a deadly hit and run in fayetteville, police say was intentional, is now facing involuntary manslaughter charges. 39 year old stoney riley made his first court appearance thursday investigators believe riley fatally struck justin atkins after asking the man for drugs. riley is being held in the cumberland county detention center on 200-thousand dollars bond. investigators say the charges against riley may still be updated. illegal and unreliable. that's how defense attorneys described some of the evidence collected in a deadly crash. former unc student, chandler counts of second degree murder. newly filed court documents reveal his attorneys are fighting to make sure jurors don't hear some of the state's key evidence. wral's julia sims reports, if convicted on all those charges, kania could get up to 60 years in prison. prosecutors have made bold statements about the chandler kania case in court. jeff nieman: we do believe the state's case is very strong. defense attorneys who have remained mostly silent are now fighting back. they claim investigators

affadavit, troopers said kania's phone could yied more information about his alcohol consumption before the crash and potentially lead them to more witnesses. court documents show the defense points out the warrant for the phone wasn't properly filled out. prosecutors say kania, then 20, had a blood alcohol content twice the legal limit for driving. but, the defense doesn't want jurors to hear about that. they contend an emt was improperly allowed to draw kania's blood. they cite a 2012 internal hi memo from a commander telling troopers not to use emt's to draw blood, even though state statute allows it. troopers estimate kania was going 70 miles an hour the wrong way down interstate 85 when he crashed head on into this car. three people, including a 6 year old girl, died. defense attorneys don't want jurors to hear from witnesses about how fast kania was going- calling that kind of testimony unreliable. dash camera video of the crash scene as well

the state's case, but the defense is asking to limit the use of photos and videos they deem inflammatory. that was julia sims reporting.... kania is currently out on a million dollar bond and on house arrest. a judge is expected to hear arguments on the motions in two weeks. the trial is set for october. a guilty plea in a series of fires that killed two people in carolina beach. marshall doran set 3 fires at a condominium in carolina beach, which killed two women inside. doran owned up to what he did- and prosecutor says the punishment fits the crime. doran is still awaiting trial for a hit and run crash in wake county more than two years ago that also killed two people. decision 2016 open pause pause pause the vice presidential nominees on both tickets visited north carolina this week. democrat tim kaine was first, with an appearance in greensboro. the crowd also heard from democratic gubernatorial candidate roy cooper and congresswoman alma adams. kaine focused on hillary

amanda: how come? colt: because i like protecting. you like protecting? dolly: he loves police so much. in june, his parents got the devastating news that he has leukemia... dolly rever/mother: total disbelief. it was just unbelievable. i felt like our world had just crashed down around us. colt: last time i came back from the hopsital i had that thing in my throat, that's why i had difficult talking. after the initial shock, colt's parents came up with a facebook page in his honor asking for patches from first responders around the country. dolly: totally overwhelmed. it matt: it blows us away, without a doubt, the amount of support that we have received. amanda: colt's father stopped counting, but we believe there are more than 800 unique patches on these walls, and he's even met some of the officers in person. apex police brought their k-9 rocky to visit colt at the hospital and gave him a stuffed colt at the hospital and gave him a stuffed animal replica. amanda: is rocky a real officer? lt: he's a 9 dog. he has a9 him lt has hio mini- police car. he often lls his father over in the iway. amanda: you pull him over do you say? colt: do you know ystopped u?lt's parents hope soe gets to llow his dream of being a lice tt: there's not an option to be anything else but positive. one thing they eery positive out, is what this outpouring of has meant toeir family.
