what raleigh police are using to figure out exactly what happened. a new trial is underway for a man who has spent most of his life in prison, for a murder he says he didn't commit.... and a raleigh restaurant owner says it's time to show our appreciation for police officers....his plans to feed the force. i'm kathryn brown...lets rewind... good evening, thanks for joining us....this week... a soldier at fort bragg is facing rape charges... a cumberland county teen is accused of killing a man with a hatchet..... and....the state's epidemiologist quits her job after she says state officials are misleading the public over the safety of their water.. a soldier stationed at fort bragg is now facing rape charges. 20-year-old christian chalk is charged w7ith 2nd degree rape and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. he was arrested at fort bragg monday. authorities says the rape investigation

16-year-old. we'll have to wait a few more weeks to see whether a 15-year-old could be tried as an adult... on charges he killed his grandfather with a hatchet. deputies arrived at the home on elgin drive to find 63-year-old joseph naulty dead from the hatchet blow. authorities charged his 15- year- old grandson with first-degree murder. neighbors in the normally quiet neighborhood are stunned. "the last time i actually saw him he was taking out his trash. joe was taking the trash out. i was actually cutting my grass yesterday and his the grass and joe was sitting on the porch. and everything was normal." authorities have not released the boy's name. 3-teenagers were robbed at gunpoint and forced to strip to their underwear in durham. the crime happened a early tuesday morning near the intersection of red oak avenue and lane street. a police report shows the robbers got away with clothes, two smartphones and a necklace. the teens ran to a neighbors home and

were two young men who looked to be about the age of 15 or 16 years old standing there in their underwear and socks. that neighbor called police and got towels for the teens to wrap around themselves. anyone with information should call durham police. a growing number of groups concerned about coal ash are demanding transparency and accountability from the mccrory administration. after the state's epidemiologist resigned. in her resignation letter, doctor megan davies says, quote..."i that deliberately misleads the public." her resignation is linked to a controversy that's been bubbling for a couple of weeks. a state toxicologist raised concerns about well water safety near duke energy coal ash ponds. state leaders doubled down on their criticism of doctor ken rudo, calling his findings inconsistent and his conduct "unprofessional." rudo's attorney told wral their statement is inaccurate.

set of voting maps ruled unconstitutional. thursday, a federal appeals panel determined 28 north carolina state house and senate districts were drawn based on racial gerrymandering. however, because we are so close to the november election, judges decided it would be too disruptive to toss out the maps now. so, the unconstitutional legislative maps will stay in place until lawmakers can redraw them next year. congressional and wake county maps have already been tossed because of gerrymandering. 3 young men are facing charges durham. the victim is described as a hard-working, father of three. 17-year-old zyon mcniel and 21-year-old trayvion lyons were both in court friday. the third suspect is15 and did not appear. police say the three men set off on a crime spree that ended with the death of 46-year- old ameer suliman. first, the robbery of a man on whispering oaks lane. investigators say two of the suspects stole the man's phone and used it to call suliman's cab.

he went to the la quinta inn off highway 55 for help... and later died in the hospital. 17:30 he was a really really nice guy. 17:32 he was a nice guy. a hard worker. worked constantly all the time :39 he was well liked by his fellow cab drivers :41 the15 and 17-year-old suspects were charged with murder. the 21- year-old was charged with acceso police say they were all arrested shortly after suliman arrived at the hotel. they had some of suliman's belongings when they were arrested. tonight in our cover story...the fear of gunshots sends a crowded mall into a panic.. and raleigh police are still trying to figure out exactly what happened. sources tells wral news authorities found what looks like two bullet holes in the ceiling. investigators say it happened at 2:30 at crabtree valley mall. wral's candace sweat tells us investigators are looking at all avenues including mobile phone video and

what happened. employees and customers walked away from the mall..scared, confused. while police ran into the mall...determined to find any possible danger still inside. me and my coworker, we heard the sound and he pulled me down and we just ran out and when we got out . several people reported hearing what sounded like gunshots shortly after 2:30 coming from the food court area. after that.. chaos. we ran in the back of the shoe store and from until the police got us out. in large groups, people were escorted out of the mall..many with their hands above their heads. several others embracing...not knowing exactly what they might have been in danger of. i'm just glad i got out, and just glad that the first thing i saw getting out was my dad. raleigh police chief cassandra deck- brown tells us investigators have not ruled anything out at this point. we're looking at all possibilities. we're not sure at this time. people heard the popping sound. some thought it was a gunshot

thousands of people waited across the street for hours as officers swept the building...floor by floor, store by store. resources such water shuttle buses to escort people back to their vehicles. meanwhile the question remains...who is responsible for this. we have to evaluate all possibilities. look at any potential leads, evaluate the 911 calls that were made that was candace sweat reporting....chief deck-brown said in that press conference they did not find shell casings...but again tha bullet holes inside the mall. eight people from ages 10-70 were transported to the hospital with non life threatening injuries. a former wake county d-a under investigation. next on rewind, why the state bar is questioning colleen janssen's conduct during a robbery trial....and i'd never imagine that this would happen. not in 100 years not 100-- but nearly 30! a north

to be released next week. wildin guillen acosta was held for months in a detention facility in georgia. his attorney believes he qualifies for asylum because he fled central america to escape gang violence. after a judge granted bond this week, his supporters took we had a chance to talk to one of his teachers and asked her what will happen when he returns. "we are expecting him to re-enroll in school and he only has one semester to finish. i'm sure wildin is going to have a big transition back to just normal life. i mean he's been gone for almost 7 months." immigration enforcement officers tell wral the bond decision was made by the immigration court

judge' s orders. the state bar is investigating a former wake county prosecutor. colleen janssen went before a wake county judge who ordered the investigation. this comes on the heels of an appeals court ruling in a robbery case from 2014. the ruling claims janssen conspired with an investigator to hide the drug-dealing activity of her key witness, to make him more credible at trial. judge donald stephens/wake county: this conduct directly affecting the superior court of wake county and therefore i think its appropriate that the court make an inquiry, if to deal with it. as a result of the appeals court decision, both men in the robbery case had their convictions overturned and were released. janssen resigned from her job. her lawyers say they welcome the inquiry, and are cooperating fully with investigators. a man who spent the bulk of his life in prison for a murder he says he didn't commit... is out, and with his family. wral was in wilmington as johnny

new pilot program that will allow food trucks on the corner of some raleigh city streets. as cullen browder reports, it's a way to give people in the capitol city a taste of what could become a staple downtown. for rare earth farms' chef justin livesey .... nats truck back up beeper ...this is a rare experience... nats more truck back up beeper in fact it's the first time a food truck has ever set up shop in one of raleigh's experimental new food truck zones. we jumped on it as quick as we could. i'm very surprised there are not other trucks out here already. the city has designated 4 spots.... 100 east polk street...300 south harrington street... 300 south bloodworth street, and south state street near the dmv headquarters. this pilot program started aug 1st. but it's slow to get off the ground. customers aren't exactly lining up yet. the first week every food truck spot remained empty, as trucks worked their way through

getting there, slowly but surely. cullen browder wral news, raleigh the rare earth farms food truck was busier this week as word started to get out. the locations were picked because they have businesses with lots of employees nearby, but no brick and mortar restaurant businesses. a raleigh restaurant owner says it is time to appreciate the good things local enforcement officers do every day. wral's bill leslie shows us how he's backing up his words of affirmation with something every officer enjoys - a good meal. yaniv sharir is a man 135526. hey clay! good to see you. how's it going? going good man. the owner of o'malley's pub and restaurant in raleigh has launched a campaign called "feed the force" to honor local law enforcement. 135657. i don't think these people get enough credit and we want to shine a little light on them and pat them on the back and make them feel like the heroes that they are. . sharir is recruiting demos and other local restaurants to offer free meals to officers in uniform september 4th and 5th.

of course, it will require some re- heating! the snack is the result of a yearlong collaboration between hostess and walmart -- both looking to boost sales with innovative products. for the first three months, the cream- filled treat will be available only at walmart. finally tonight...while the olympics are underway in rio, there are some fun summer games going on here in the u-s. the arkansas children's hospital in little rock -- is hosting what it is calling the home-made olympic games. children participate in eve like a doctor obstacle course" and they received medals for drawing their favorite sports in arts and crafts. the kids also enjoyed red, white and blue sundaes. employees came up with the idea, because they did not want their young patients to miss out on normal activities. that's all the time we have for tonight....have a great evening.
