learning about the investigation. >> people take to the streets once again to protest donald trump's win. how the president elect is responding. >> many local events happening today in honor of our nation's veterans. thanks for joining us this veterans day, i'm lena tillett. >> i'm renee chou. great to have you with us. breaking news in downtown raleigh where police are investigating a deadly crash. >> this happened on south dawson street which is closed off at wral's emmy victor is at the scene and has been for some time now. what are you learning now? >> reporter: i have some information for you since we just spoke 30 minutes ago. i want to show you the scene, police crews are back and there is even a tow truck here. they have a big task here. they have to get this car that is stuck inside of a guardrail onto the tow truck, it is a big scene, one that has been developing since as early as

we are now approaching the sixth hour of the investigation. as of right now, one person has died, another is in critical condition at a local hospital. there is debris that we were seeing still on the ground, and lots of information we are waiting to learn. including how this happened. how the car got stuck in the guardrail. there are still other pieces of germination are waiting to hear from, we have spoken with -- information we are waiting to hear from, police and waiting to hear more. i want to bring in brian shrader to talk to you about how this could affect your morning commute. >> reporter: the good news right now is that sensors are not indicating any huge delays on dawson street. that is welcome news. it has been pretty quieon the roads this morning but still, that is a major route through downtown raleigh southbound and is closed at cabarrus street. as you saw, it looks like with the cleanup job it could be closed for some time to come. think about an alternate route. one option might be salisbury

another potential optional route might be blunt street heading downtown. this is through the morning, check wral.com for updates on when dawson street reopens later on. i want to head out to rtp. we have another problem, we have an overturned tractor- trailer on the ramp from i-40 two miami boulevard. it is on the shoulder but we have blocked the ramp in order to get that all cleaned up. not sure when we are able to get this cleared and reopened. trying to get from 40 eastbound onto miami boulevard, take davis drive, head down 54 and pick up miami boulevard on the other side of that i-40 interchange. also noticed because of the backups, we are seeing slow traffic on the southbound durham freeway. with delays beginning around tw alexander drive toward the i-40 merge. good news around the rest of the triangle is that major

county has left one person dead, several others badly hurt. >> it happened on highway 96 last night. wral's bill leslie is in the newsroom with more. >> we know that the surviving victims were brought to wake med. here's a look at the scene in johnson county last night, a minivan left the roadway overturned and caught fire. the car landed in a grassy patch buy a house. we are told at least seven people were inside that car. one person has died, four have two children are also hospitalized. fortunately, there injuries are minor. we are still waiting to learn what causes a minivan to swerve off the road and the latest on the victims' conditions. we have been checking in with authorities and will bring you the latest once we know more of this on air and online. >> thank you. we are working to learn what was inside a suspicious package that shut down several streets in downtown raleigh. this was breaking news last night. the package was discovered in an area around salisbury street

were advised to leave the area for their safety. police removed the package and the streets reopened three hours later. donald trump spent his first day in washington since being elected president. he met with president obama and republican leaders. edward lawrence has more on his transition plans, plus more on anti-trump protests all over the country overnight. >> reporter: his first day in washington dc fantastic. >> my number one priority the coming two months is to try to facilitate a transition that ensures our president elect is successful. >> reporter: in a remarkable image, the president-elect and president obama shook hands. >> mr. president, it was a great honor being with you and i look forward to being with you many, many more times in the future.

the respect echoed by white house spokesman josh earnest. >> it seems the meeting was a little less awkward than some might expect. >> reporter:the president- elect went on to tour the spot where he will be inaugurated with house speaker paul ryan and senate majority leader mitch mcconnell avoiding the protesters before every step. >> i have not been to sleep since he was elected president. i am devastated right now. >> they should just get used to it and start trying to figure out how we are going to get along. >> reporter:protests continued across the city in the u.s. for a third straight night. trump responded on twitter saying professional members of the media are protesting, not fair. >> trump woke up in trump tower where he is looking over the transition including possible cabinet choices. trump won in north carolina, largely due to his

county. many supporters tell us they believe he is a man of his word and they will do -- he will do what he says he will do. by the numbers, big numbers came out for trump compared to hillary clinton. >> get us out of a deficit so we can maybe see social security for us hard-working people. and then maybe for my kids and grandkids to have a better future. >> i don't agree with everything he has done in the past, or what may come out of his mouth. but at the same time, if he is able to put up his time and money, i feel like, give the guy a chance. >> the common theme among these trump supporters is they all believe he offered them hope for a better future. many of them say it is important to back up his promises with action.

and attorney general roy cooper are gearing up for what could be a legal battle over the still undecided governors race. mccrory announced his committee has filed paperwork with the state board of elections to set up a legal defense fund. the candidates are separated by fewer than 5000 votes with nearly 8 times that many provisional ballots to be verified. this could be a game changer. the durham public school system is providing counseling for students concerned about the presidential transition. the school system says they are their families including those who speak english as a second language and those who are refugees. encourage any student with concern to let a teacher or principal no and they're making counselors available to provide support to those students. there are a number of events going on today for veterans day and it's going to be beautiful for them. >> perfect weather. >> absolutely. i know everybody is excited about that. we take a look at what's going

tradition of honoring our vets, the rotc veterans day 5k run kicked off from the nc state memorial belltower that happened today at 6:00. it is a 19 year tradition, there will also be a free lunch for vets and active military veterans -- military members,

special lapel pin. president obama will mark his last veterans day in office by making a trip to arlington national cemetery in virginia. the president will lay a floral wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier during the annual observance. he will also make remarks, thanking veterans for their service. today, engineers with the north carolina national guard will deploy to asia. there will be a mobilization ceremony before they start their mission that begins at 10:00 at the north carolina national guard headquarters. help two eagles in a storm drain. >> what wildlife experts say let up to the encounter and how long it will take one of the birds to heal.

temperatures in the 60s and 70s, it's going to feel great. you will be tempted to go outside tomorrow. our dewpoint at 36 will keep things feeling very pleasant through the afternoon. now almost 50 in south hill, 47 in rocky mount, 41 chapel hill, now starting to see temperatures warming up a little bit, still in the 30s in sanford and smithfield, 46 in clinton and goldsboro. we are waiting on a cold front which will usher in a whole different air mass for tomorrow but we stay cool and sunny. he will not see rain for today but that is great news for folks in the mountains who are having to deal with the wildfires. right now, the wind this afternoon is going to help those fires spread a little bit more. it would be nice if we had, winds and rain with this front but we will not see at this time. chilly air comes in behind it, we will see the coldest air mass

here's a look at what's coming up this afternoon, lots of sunshine, cold front with a little bit of cloud cover but no rain with that one. it will be a nice, dry day with rain -- later in the sunday, early monday but we finally see a little bit of rain. showing you the rain chance for the next five days, there is something besides a great big zero be cited. zero friday saturday and during the daylight sunday. sunday night, 40% chance, 20% chance tuesday of lingering showers in the eastern part of north carolina. let's check out that 7-day forecast. certainly a beautiful day today, 68 degrees, our high temperature. a lot of veterans day ceremonies happening, if you are heading out to any of those 10 a.m. , expect upper 50s, warming up to the aid -- mid-to upper 50s by 10:00 and. i'm honored to be the mc of the

charity golf club to benefit veterans. by 5:00, 62 degrees after a nice warm day, nothing by the day saturday, 65, and 63 sunday. the high begins to climb after a very cold start on sunday morning. likely to be our first hard freeze of the season. we have seen temperatures in the mid-to upper 30s, even though 30s near the virginia our first hard freeze in the upper 20s when that frost will kill everything. that will be an end to the growing season. monday, chance of showers, 60 degrees, 63 tuesday. even though we have a decent chance for rain, the amounts will be fairly light. from the triangle northward, traced to a tenth of an inch and from the triangle southward, maybe a quarter to a half an inch, some folks will end up seeing rain out of this but not a whole lot. wednesday and thursday, temperatures climbed back into the mid-60s before a little bit

300 firefighters are on the ground battling a wildfire in the western part of our state. those fires are only 15% contained. a state of emergency is in effect for 25 counties. at least the fires are burning in an area that have been in severe dry. officials are urging some residents to leave, so far 12 homes were evacuated in the glory. governor mccrory says a state of emergency will help with evacuations. >> this is extremely dangerous, dangerous for the firefighters and possibly dangerous for the structures and people in and around the fires. >> reporter: attorney general roy cooper says the state's prowess -- price gouging law is in effect. if you believe anyone is using the fires to make an unfair profit, alert his office. a memorial will be held for two north carolina a and t students who were killed last month. a suspect has not been

year-old were shot when someone fired during an off-campus party. the students were two innocent bystanders. two high school students in oregon were suspended for using racial slurs during april trump gathering in the school's parking lot. the school says the students were expressing their own views but there were a couple of times where they overstepped their own bounds. they say the school is having discussions with students about where to draw the line between freedom of speech and intimidating police are looking for the person who wrote, whites only, inside of a bathroom stall. some students prompted -- hosted an impromptu sit in to express their concerns. in a letter to parents, the superintendent says hate speech would not be tolerated. a recall -- a seatbelt problem has prompted a recall for 70,000 volvos.

cx90 cars, in documents, volvo says a flaw with the buccal -- buckle hardware could cause the belt to separate from the bracket. detailers will replace the buckle for free starting december 12. researchers studied 75,000 students in third through fifth grade and found those living in more likely to be obese than those living in urban areas. they also found students in high poverty schools. they say -- the carolina panthers took time to honor our veterans just ahead of veterans day. players, cheerleaders, and even though she greeted servicemembers at the u.s. army reserve hq in charlotte, they

and high-fives, they also gave out t-shirts and memorabilia. an interesting rescue for two american bald eagles that ended up stuck in a florida storm drain. take a look here, the birds were found with one eagle on top of another with its wings spread. many thought the bird on top may have been protecting the other from falling further into the drain. an expert debunked the theory calling it a fight that began in the sky over territory. the away but it took two hours to rescue the other bird. it will take several weeks for the eagle to recover before being released into the wild. i like the other theory better. >> i do, too. the expert just had to weigh in, right? >> we need positivity. >> no fights. a connecticut dad gave his family and early veterans day surprise. >> and the look on his sun's face? priceless.

>> senior chief petty officer leonard viggiatti walked into the veterans day ceremony at his son's elementary school. he returned home from an eight month u.s. navy diplomat in africa in time to attend in person. >> he said he had butterflies when he walked in. he will be hom family time together, then he is heading back to virginia for some training and will be home again for a few years. >> i'm reading his lips. this is not real, this is not true. that look of disbelief. >> it touches your heart every single time. >> you think about all of the veterans in his area that are hopefully able to spend time with their families. >> that's right. we wish that for you and it will be a beautiful day for you

a tradition with hundreds of runners, it is all part of a day of events honoring veterans at the university. and it's going to be a beautiful day for a good run. >> so nice and crisp for them this morning, temperatures in the upper 30s to the low 40s. looking eyes at the airport, temperatures warming quickly. literally about an hour ago, temperatures were in the upper 30s in many places and now 50 in roxboro and south hill. 57 in rocky mount, 46 in our way to a nice afternoon with 68 degrees, likely to be in the low 70s down south in the triangle and turning much colder saturday, 10 degrees colder with a high of 55, 28 for the morning low puts us into the first real freeze of the fall season. as we take a look at the live commute map this morning, we still have problems in downtown raleigh from that overnight accident. dawson street closed at cabarrus street, likely will be

salisbury street. had south bend through downtown and pick up mlk on the other side of the accident. as we take a look at durham, head over to rtp, the ramp from eastbound i-40 into miami boulevard is closed as crews try to clear up an overturned tractor-trailer on the shoulder. if you're coming in from south durham trying to get to miami boulevard, use davis drive

we are following breaking news in downtown raleigh where police are investigating a deadly crash. >> this happened on south dawson street which is closed right now. wral's emmy victor has been on the scene since 4:30 this morning. i understand there is a tow truck on the scene. >> there is. just a little over six hours since this happened. they are finally in the cleaning process. you can see fire, police and tow truck all trying to get rid of the car that crashed into a guardrail here. that cause one person to lose their life come a second person remains in the hospital in critical condition because of this crash. there is still an amount of debris on the ground that they need to clean up and there is still an investigation that needs to happen. we are working to learn who was involved in this and why exactly that car ended up in the guardrail here. now, this is south dawson street, an area that is very

people usually use south dawson street to commute to work. i want to bring injure five for more on traffic. >> thankfully, we have not seen any big backups so far in downtown raleigh with the accident at least according to sensors. let's show you the alternate route to get around that. dawson street is closed at cabarrus street. again, this is a major downtown artery, trying to get through on the southbound side, trying to get down toward mlk and north side of downtown raleigh. your best option to get around these delays would be salisbury street, that is your best alternate route. another option might be blunt street a couple of blocks over. again, not seeing any big delays at this point but it is likely that dawson street will be closed for a while longer as they get that cleared up. as we take a look at durham, we have an overturned tractor- trailer on the ramp of 40 eastbound to miami boulevard. police have the ramp block and it is looking like they are

reopened, hard to tell what's going on but for the moment, you cannot get to miami boulevard om 40 eastbound using that exit. take davis drive instead down to 54 and toward miami boulevard. some early delays we have seen on the southbound durham freeway trying to merge into traffic have now cleared up, back to you. still no rest following a deadly shooting in durham. two people were shot at walton street and wedge dale drive yesterday afternoon. when police arrived, they found a man dead woman to -- with a gunshot wound to her arm. their names have not been released. raleigh police hope surveillance pictures can help them solve a murder case involving a cabdriver. the man was killed tuesday outside universal cab company on hill avenue where he worked. investigators believe the person in these pictures have information about the crime. take a look at this person. if you have any information yourself, call raleigh police. u.s. marshals say a ruthless criminal is finally in

police initially took out warrants on michael wood in march. that's when police say he kidnapped a woman and asulted her. seral agencies took him into custody after a standoff in his home. police tried at least one other time to capture him which resulted in a high-speed chase where he got away. the presidential race results led to a surge in enrollment for insurance under the affordable care act. the day after donald trump's election, more than 100,000 people selected health plans. trump has the program. wednesday was recorded as the busiest stations open enrollment began november 1 when about 95,000 signed up. the last day to enroll in or change plans for coverage is december 15 but you have until the 31st two enroll in or change a 2017 health plan. more than 130 restaurant chains are seeing thank you to active members of the military

with freebies and deals. ihop is offering red, white and blue pancakes from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. chili's, hooters, applebee's, bob evans and all of garden are offering free deals from menus as well and longhorn steakhouse is offering a complementary dessert. guests dining with veterans will get 10% off of their meals as well. to get the deals, have your military id or proof of service. the hurricane matthew recovery committee will hear by this devastating storm. the committee's first meeting is tuesday at the robson community college in lumberton. this was taken shortly after matthew hit. you can see the town was inundated with water. residents will be able to offer comments and the committee will discuss community outreach and longm plans. several etings will be held all over eastern carolina in the coming weeks. the houston astros said thank you to three organizations in fayetteville

matthew. a team representative who sent a check totaling $5000 to benefit thesalvation army and city police and fire departments. the astros will bring a minor league team to the city when the new baseball stadium in fayetteville is completed. we had all of that rain from matthew, we did not want any rain in the early part of october but now we can't stand to see some. the roxboro sky cam looking across the area for this veterans day, you can see the flags flying in downtown roxboro. it is breezy and will remain breezy through the afternoon with a cold front coming in, that is what will drop temperature significantly for tomorrow. we are seeing a nice warm-up, 47 in rocky mount, 42 in roxboro, 40 degrees in garner, temperatures climb up into the mid-60s by lunchtime, should pop out into the mid-60s to near 70 and by 5:00, down to 65. just a beautiful day, but feeling a whole lot different

>> as we slip time into the future. >> we keep talking about the fact that it is going to be colder this weekend, especially saturday during the day and on sunday night. let's take a look on what's going on right now, raleigh sky cam, nice out there right now, 40 degrees, southwest wind at 5 miles per hour and our dewpoint is at 36. it's going to be a beautiful day today. temperatures right now are climbing up into the 50s in some places, really warming up fast, since our temper spots, 52 roxboro, 51 in south hill, 47 degrees in fayetteville. satellite and radar showing clear skies and of course we have our cold front dropping in on a sprinkler temperatures. ahead of it, nice and mild today, we are not going to see rain ahead of this front. we could use some rain but our situation is n nearly as desperate as the western part of the state where they are under extreme drought. they will see winds gusting 20 to 25 miles per hour, that's

good news for those folks. the main impact for us is the chilly air that comes in, we will talk more about that in just a second. not only are we dealing with wildfires in the western part of north carolina, south carolina, georgia, tennessee, west virginia, a lot of the south dealing with fires. so, the western part of the state, the governor declared a state of emergency. five counties seeing evacuations, national forest land is being affected by this, thousands of thousands of acres burning in the western part of north carolina. there is an air quality alert for the smoke and once that front comes through, our winds will shift south, southwesterly so don't be surprised if you notice some haze or smoke in the air, that is from the wildfires to the west. we are not dealing with many drought conditions but certainly to the west that is

extr drought in the southwest corner of north carolina. severe and moderate drought. really, no relief in sight. our best chance of rain in the last several weeks, monday or tuesday before the mountains, the amount of rain that ty will see looks pretty light. 68 for the high temperature, the warmest daily will see for the next several days but getting into next week, temperatures will be close to normal, normal is 65 for this time of year. 55 degrees saturday, a and that very cold start there sunday morning at 28 is likely to end the growing season. the coldest temperature, first hard freeze we have seen so far this fall season. 40% chance of rain monday so it will be nice to see that good chance for rain, but the amount, even though we have a good chance of rain, very light north of the triangle, traced to a 10th of an inch, but south of rolla, quarter to a half inch.
