story that people have many questions about, but the autopsy does at least give us a few more answers. scott was shot three times, once in the posterior chest, once in the abdomen, and once in the arm, and abrasions were reported by the medical examiner. a foxology report shows he was on sedatives and anticonsultants, but no al or cocaine was found in his system. the autopsy explains his cause of death, but at this point it's just a piece of the investigation. scott's wife has said she believes her husband was shot because of his race and that he was an armed -- and that he wasn't armed, but the police say scott was indeed armed. the investigation is on going, and the officer remains on paid leave while the investigation continues. >> a lot 6 of interest in the case. thank you. a local teacher is on paid

text messages she sent to an 8th grade student. as of today sneed is on leave from unc middle school. she resigned from mcgee last school year in johnston county after text messages including talk of love and relationships. the ethics advisory committee reviewed the case but didn't take action against her teaching license. 5 on your side investigated and found that johnston county schools never turned over ethics committee never asked for him. after we showed her the text messages action the state superintendent -- messages, the state superintendent reopened the case. and the state's top criminal investigation agency is looking into whether crimes were committed in last spring's primary election in durham county. they're investigating the mishandling of more than a thousand ballots in the state

counted twice. the investigation could play a role in the still undecided case for governor. pat mccrory claims wrongful for illegal conduct in the heavily democratic county last week when 94,000 votes were reported late on election date. mccrory currently trails cooper by less than 5,000 votes. and reports say donald trump's secretary of state. preibus was named chief of staff. president obama held his first press conference since learning donald trump will be the next president of the united states. he spoke with cautious optimism about trump's upcoming term in office. >> reality has a way of inserting itself, and some of

carolina. we're finding out the containment within the mountains is getting extremely difficult because of the very, very dry conditions. the fire right here is now is second highest priority fire in the nation. i think the first highest priority fire is in georgia at this point in time. so we're around the area with the highest priority fire according to the federal wild service. >> more than 20 wildfires are burning in our thousands of acres burned, hundreds had to leave their homes. during the media briefing earlier today, the governor said no deaths were caused by the fires and only a few structures damaged. dozens of firefighters from the triangle are battling on the front lines. they arrived today to relieve other firefighters that hadn't been off the front lines for days. they're working 15 hour shifts.

superintendent in the country, and the first female to hold the position in the state of north carolina, but recently she lost her re-election bid, so she'll be leaving office, and talking to her earlier today it was clear that has been tough. >> one thing that i have are the memories of working really hard for each student in our state, and so i find that very rewarding. >> reporter: election night was a shock to state superintendent june atkinson, losing the she held for three terms to mark johnson, a school board member in winston-salem. >> i was very saddened and shocked that i lost the election. >> reporter: she's been in the north carolina public school system since 2005, but there was more she wanted to do. >> now with technology we can move to the place where testing is not overtly invasive. >> reporter: and she says her fight for school funding was not over.

not having the necessary resources they need. >> reporter: common core instruction was a talk in some circles, but atkinson supports it, says it helps students think critically and is misunderstood by some adults. >> i have yet to meet a person against the common core standards who have read the common core standards. >> reporter: other the years she fought a governor's appointment of a ceo to leaves she has concerns about prescribetyization but also leaves proud with gains in test and reading scores. >> there are a lot of things to celebrate. >> reporter: atkinson says she plans to write a book when she leaves office, including things she wanted to say while she had her job here but was unable to say because of her position.

about a murder-suicide. the two were involved in a bitter custody battle. jeremy pierce forced his way into becky pierce's parents home in fuquay-varina friday night. when police arrived both were dead. the couple's two small children were found safe in a separate area of the home. friends are still trying to come to terms with the tragedy. >> she always would greet you

she was a christian, and she was proud of that. >> tonight the granville county sheriff said he placed jeremy pierce on a 30-diapases suspension -- 30-day paid suspension but didn't say why. and police say a shooting overrule the weekend in morrisville was not random. a man was shot in the back, but his name or released. for the fourth time since it began the judge in the bergdahl case entered a new trial date. the judge set the trial to start may 15th of next year. he was concerned the prosecution isn't getting classified documents to the defense team in a timely manner. the defense says it still needs computer software to view the more than one and a half million pages of information

with the cost of hurricane matthew. the governor's office requested more than a billion dollars in disaster aid. most of the money to be used to repair housing, jobs, and agriculture needs, including long term plans to avoid problems in the future. the governor says initial estimates are that hurricane matthew caused 2 billion dollars in economic damage to north carolina. the hurricane matthew recovery committee holds their first meeting tomo from residents at the community college in lumberton. a disaster recovery center opened today in halifax county at the municipal building. the center stays open until 6:00 p.m. on wednesday. >. all hurricane matthew shelters are now closed. the last one was in hard hit lumberton in robinson county.

watching for the dense fog and let you know how it impacts traffic. here's the rdu skycam. still overcast, and we'll watch to seeing if clearing takes place. 51 at rdu with a dewpoint of 49, and a lot of low level moisture, so if clearing takes place the lower levels start to cool and that could help fog form, and that's let to start. now looking around the local numbers,51 her durham, and wake forest, and expanded view, 54 roxboro and fayetteville. rain last night and this morning. three tenths officially. much-needed rain, but none of it fell on the western part of the state. we expand the view, low pressure moving up the east coast, tomorrow in new england, and high pressure to the south and west scooting in, and will

again with high temperatures getting into the 70s. here's futurecast, we have a lot of cloud cover skill. out west it's clear. futurecast earlier this fog all over the viewing area, but now confining it to the southern counties. we believe we'll see at least some fog in the try and southern virginia -- triangle and southern virginia, maybe a patchy dense basis. lunchtime should be crystal clear, beautiful blue sky and a lot of temperatures hovering around 60 at that point, and then tomorrow afternoon should be quiet, the commute should be easy, and a lot of clear sky, and this time tomorrow night we look for clear sky and cooling down, we'll expect lows in the 40s for wednesday morning. so overnight it's mid to upper 30s to around 40 in fayetteville. 38 here in the triangle, and gradual clearing, and fog could develop perhaps on a patchy dense basis.

butch davis will be introduced as the new head coach at florida international tomorrow afternoon. the former north carolina coach has agreed to a five-year deal to coach. he hasn't coached since he was fired in chapel hill at the beginning of what has become a long series of issues with the ncaa and unc. davis was never named in the reports about the academic misconduct, and he always said he did nothing wrong. fiu is definitely a job. they went to bowls this 2010 -- in 2010 and 2011. >> one of davis' former player is in the hospital. rams defensorrive end robert -- defensive end robert quinn is in stable condition after admitting himself with a non- football illness. quinn was diagnosed with a brain tumor while he was in high school in south carolina. >> the current heels are moving

stability. a georgia father will be sentenced next month for the murder of his son. harris faces life without parole. he was found guilty on eight counts today, including malice murder and cruelty to children. the 21-year-old son died after being left in his father's hot suv for seven hours. defense attorneys argued he simply forgot the boy was in there, but prosecutors said it was intentional. harris has 30 days to the convictions. a florida police officer is recovering after a shooting that left one man dead. police were trying to make a traffic stop when the driver jumped out of the car and attacked him. another man with a gun ran up and yelled for the driver to shot. then they heard gunshots. the driver was dead. the officer was taken to the hospital, but is expected to recover. it's not clear if the other person was a good samaritan or a police officer out of

and residents were left stranded after a devastating earthquake. rocks and mud swept across highways. military helicopters and ships are working to rescue hundreds of tourists and residents stranded in the coastal towns. the word's saddest polar bear now has a new temporarily home. people around the world were upset when the polar bear named pizza was found to be living at bad conditions in china aquarium. he's now being moved to ocean park to be reunited with his parents. several videos showed the bear in distress, and disturbed viewers and animal advocates around the world hope he'll be happier at his new home. adobe will pay $1 million for a data bleach effecting customers here in north carolina.

glimpse of the marvelous super moon. here's the latest images. washington dc with the monument there. pictures and video going viral from across the country and overseas. the moon becomes full on the same day the orbit is closest to earth. there's another one on december 14th, but not quite as vivid as this one. let's take a look at weather going on. at the top of the newscast we told you about the fires out west and shows the picture earlier today courtesy of the nasa world view, and there's north carolina and georgia and tennessee, and all the white is coming from the fires, and you can see how thick the smoke is. they have air quality alerts for parts of south carolina,

also north george george. now all this is cloud -- georgia. now all this is cloud cover, as long as the fires keep burning and they don't have them under control we'll see days and days and days with poor air quality and a lot of smoke. could be quite some time this continues, and hopefully the weather will cooperate and bring some rain soon, but we don't see this. this is the rain fall potential over the next five days. the greatest totals could be up near new england where i this also have a -- they drought. rain over the mid-mississippi valley. the greens between a quarter and half inch. the lighter shaded green a tenth to a quarter of an inch, and nothing going on here rain- wise. now we do have rain in the forecast come saturday with the front, but it's a very small chance and per the european model. we're bankerring on that -- banking on that being correct.

picture. there's a front building out west, and in the coming days it shifts eastward, so by friday and saturday the ridge will be encompassing the southeast and the next trough arrives saturday night and sunday night bringing the chill, but with the ridge in place over the course of friday and saturday temperatures are likely to warm up well into the 70s, and you can see that in the seven-day forecast. now tomorrow because of the shine it's warmer, 65, most friday for area high school football game playoff it's nice in the 60s falling into the 50s by the end of the game, but friday and saturday quite warm. santa could be basking in the 60s when he comes to the end of the parade in downtown raleigh on saturday, and that rain will be more in the afternoon, so right now looking like the morning is dry, but gerald already jinxed it. >> it will not rain.
