and elizabeth. >> the whole gang and it will be a beautiful day, too. it is, the helicopter flying by here with the raleigh skycam and patching fog looking east across the skyline of raleigh. we haven't seen much of it on the camera, but a few pockets out there. cold out there. 37 in durham and 36 in cary. and 32 in roxboro and south hill in southern pines and fayetteville and rocky mount and wilson. temperatures will climb into the mid-40s quickly in the next hour or so. 67 the high this afternoon, and a nice afternoon. temperatures climbing into the 70s. brian has a look at the roads. it gets busier in the 7:00 hour.

accident in garner on 40 westbound at 7:02. and this is i-40 from jones sausage road, and this is westbound traffic from business 70. we have an accident blocking the right lane. so traffic is squeezing by in the two left lanes and is really getting things backed up. the latest sensor reading shows a 37-minute ride from 42 to 440. consider alternate routes. 50 ?oash backing 42 to business 70. and if you are trying to get on to i 40 westbound from the raleigh area make from rock quarry or hammond road you're in good shape because the traffic is backed up. the traffic volume to the south side of raleigh to the west side is looking pretty light at this point. we have a crash on airport

tracie potts, nbc news, washington. the race for north carolina governor is undecided with pat mccrory challenging several hundred ballots. there is an investigation for alleged irregularities from the general election. it will be a few more weeks before student assignments are taken up. some students elementary could be moved to fill horton creek elementary. parents are upset saying that it would split their community and that horton creek would become over crowded itself. they want to look at the numbers one more time before making a decision. and raleigh city the leaders want to hear your thoughts on the issues facing the city. >> they will cover everything

are diewmg energy officials issued a warning on twitter about a recent scam. the official account post that does scammers are targeting customers by phone. a spokesperson tweeted last week alone, 178 customers received the scam calls. than $8700. duke energy reminds customers that utilities will never demand payment using a credit card over the phone. there is a proposal to help the homeless by creating a 1- stop resource center offering showers and laundry facilities.

threatened with arrests for feeding homeless people in morris square. the commissioners will vote on the proposal in january. dr. william brown died on monday. dr.brown was principal at several fayetteville schools in the 1960s. the burial will take place friday afternoon at cumberland memorial gardens. dr.brown was 87. a man is fighting for his life after being hit by a in fayetteville. policesay the 45-year-old was hit on owen drive near village drive at 6:45 last night. he is in critical condition at cape fear valley medical center. now might be a very good time to visit our nation's capitol. a look at the multimillion dollar renovations made to the dome. and complaints over ballots

goldsboro. 38 in southern pines and erwin and 39 in fayetteville. it's chilly out there and colder than it was yesterday in the eastern and southern parts of the viewing area where we had clouds yesterday and kept the temperatures warmer. not so today. be prepared. where is this chilly air coming from? it's coming along the side of the high pressure system with wind -- winds th clockwise. the afternoon, nice and mild with the sunshine. the backside of the high is where the warm air is, and we'll seal that friday and saturday with the temperatures 10 degrees above normal and watch this. the upper wind and temperature map and these white lines here, the winds typically follow. so the winds are coming out of the north and northwest with cooler temperatures. we take it into tomorrow and the high pressure system builds over us and makes this ridge here and stops that flow of

you can see that with the color contours. that will not last. look at this huge dip or trough in the jet stream. that comes in late saturday and we are back into a northwesterly flow, cold on sunday and will stick around at least through monday into tuesday and temperatures will moderate a bit. 67 today and tomorrow and morning lows in the low to mid- 40s, so warmer tomorrow morning and expect that through on this front to get its act together way back in the pacific northwest and by friday evening, the front pushes into the mountains. you'll see a bit of rain there. we don't see it until late on saturday, just a little bit, though. we wish for the mountains a good stretch but it's not likely to be the case. we will see considerably colder air. 73 on saturday and, of course,

warm. for the wral christmas parade, the start time is 61. so very warm and a chance of showers late saturday and cold air on monday and tuesday. i will be grabbed my coat on monday morning at 29 degrees. we have cold air next week. here's a look at the roads. my goodness. what happened? that's more than one spot in the red. we have an accident in garner ear at jones sausage road. that accident has cleared up. that's the good news. the bad news is almost an hour drive time, still with the residual delays. all lanes are open around jones sausage road but backup is past 40 westbound and takes a long time to get the residual delays worked out. when you have an accident like this in the morning commute we

to normal until 9:00, 9:30 so just the nature of the stretch of road through gasher with congestion and volume increasing in the 7:00 and 8:00 hours. i think thuy -- we will probably see delays through the commute. and clayton to hammond, 20 minutes, northbound, pretty bad up to business 70, 25 minutes. be patient leaving garner into raleigh. back to you. family members of victims of the stanley hook shooting are appealing the dismissal of a lawsuit against a north carolina gun maker. they want to hold remington

a rummington bushmaster in the attack. the families claim that the gun maker and the wholesalers that sold his mother the weapon were negligent . the protests continue with the company building the $3 billion oil pipeline that wants to move ahead with a section of the project in north dakota. they have asked the court to let them lay reservoir. the sioux tribe says this will lead to water toxicity. a suspect shot and killed a southwest airline employee. the victim was the father of james winchester, the kansas city chiefs player.

backing out of plans to make cars in mexico, no longer in michigan. president-elect trump has repeatedly criticized the decision. ford'sceostressed that no jobs will be lost since the michigan plant will make two other vehicles. renovations for the u.s. capitol dome are complete. the $60 million project took three years. it had not been restored the dwight eisenhower administration. it removed hazardous materials and used 1200 gallons of paint. 7:23. a handful of businesses supported by loyal customers very to find a new location. >> the issue that is forcing them to leave. and twitter is empowering users to fight cyberbullies.

good morning. 7:26. i'm bill leslie with the top stories, and we've got traffic troubles, brian shrader. we do, bill, an earlier crash on westbound 40 at garner at jones sausage road. it's cleared up but with very heavy residual delays. you can see the clayton bypass crawling along out of raleigh. a 50 to 55-minute trip between 42 and 440, just the nature of

see the traffic patterns dropping any time soon. we have a number of minor crashes around the triangle, none of which are causing big problems but for the most part, traffic is moving along well. back to you. breaking news. fire destroyed a double wide mobile home in selma off old county lane. firefighterssay no one was hurt but obviously nothing much left of the house. no word on a community policing is expected to be one of the topics at a community conversation series in raleigh and starts tonight at millbrook communities exchange center. mayor mcfarland wants to identify the challenges facing the city. no challenges in terms of the weather today, elizabeth. it's nice out there, and it's chilly but that's all we is say today.

welcome back. the time is 7:30. the durham county board of elections meets this morning to discuss the recount of tens of thousands of votes. >> the general counsel of the state republican party claims that the results from 94,000 ballots captain be trusted. emmy victor is live in durham to bring us up to date. emmy? >> reporter: bill and lena, we expect the conversation to kickoff in about 30 minutes or so. the durham board of elections will decide if a rediscounts necessary. the chairman of the board said that there is no reason right now as to why they need one. this is a conversation that was sparked last tuesday. voting totals from five early voting sites and one election day precinct couldn't be read on a computer so the team printed off the results and entered them manually into the computer. the board is being challenged

make or break in the race for governor between republican pat mccrory and roy cooper. mccrory was leading throughout the night until the election results from durham county came into play. cooper leads by about 5000 votes and claims he will be the next governor of north carolina. people have concerns why they have the meeting which will start in about 30 minutes. >> emmy victor, that you were. and absentee ballots will be reviewed ahead of the friday deadline to be finalized. they will go over provisional ballots tomorrow. the cumberland disaster recovery coalition is a volunteer long-term recovery group meant to keep victims top of mind and last night, they

67 the high temperature this afternoon, and we'll do better than that if you like the warm weather. cloudy saturday and above normal and above normal for the end of the week and below normal for sunday and next week. i'll show you that coming up. brian's here with a look at traffic that you don't want to get messed up with. exactly right. 7:34 and big backups through garner because of an earlier accident 40 westbound at jones sausage road. for a while, it looked right lane. the accident itself is clear but the residual delay linger. i-40 at 42 and toward the clayton bypass you can see the stop and roll. that's like that towards jones sauce annual road. the drive times, the 50 to 55- minute mark. it's a slow trip. we are in the busiest part of the commute, and the traffic volume is high enough even with

the delays will ease. thinking about alternate routes. 70 business might be your best bet if you can get there heading towards hammond road and then up into southeast raleigh. that might be the best option this morning and there are not many good options. at this point on the southeastern side of wake county, consider using 42 to fuquay or old stage road and 401 that way. it might save you time. it's a long, slow ride from to 440. but notice with the traffic backed up around the clayton bypass on the south side of raleigh and the fortify work zone and beyond, very light conditions. it's all jammed up back there. it's a miserable morning through garner and raleigh, looking good. 540 westbound delays are not so bad as you head away from capital boulevard to highway 6. back to you. >>thank you, brian. you know you are in the

35 at the airport and cold out there. and the dew point, 35 and you might run into a couple of patches of fog. i mean, tiny patches like in creek bottoms. it's 36 in roanoake rapids and 38 in chapel hill and 34 in smithfield and 39 in fayetteville. it's cold out there this morning and it will cool tomorrow morning but we are starting a warming trend. right now, high pressure is just to the west and helping this morning. the sunshine will warm us up nicely and the high moves eastward into a warmer flow. we'll feel that on friday and saturday. saturday, really warm for the raleigh christmas parade. we take a look at futurecast and it's nice and bright and high pressure is keeping things dry and bright through friday and we'll watch the cold front. it's just starting to move back to the west and you can see

starting to produce rain as it crosses the mississippi valley and so much of the southeast could use rain. a lot of wildfires and dry conditions, but once again, this front as it approaches the mountains will weaken and probably not going to bring us rain. probably a .25" or less with the system coming through. ready of it, nice and warm. 67 today and tomorrow and 73 for tomorrow will certainly be warmer than normal by 10 degrees. air comes in with a chance rain late saturday with the front coming by but it should wait until after the parade is over. keep checking in with us in case the front changes. but sunshine and 61 degrees and at noon, 68, and brian and renee and bill will be hosting the parade. the rain on saturday will be fairly minimal likely late in

not even showing any, a little bit in the mountains, maybe .1" but a fairly dry front and then cold, cold, cold monday morning and 29 degrees, between degrees below normal, not getting to the record, 17 in 1914 but a cold morning on monday and again on tuesday but mostly sunny and sunshine and dry conditions except for saturday. brian, you are still having trouble but this is not the same place we were talking problem on -- new problem on the northbound durham freeway, 147 at alston, a 41 minute ride between mangum. so that's three times what it usually takes. and, of course, we are dealing

c1 the time is 7:56. i'm lena tillett. brian shrader is tracking quite a few backups. a mess in durham, alston. the left lane is blocked with what appears to be a minor crash and we have a tow truck on the scene to hopefully get this cleared up quickly. but traffic is squeezing by. almost 60 minutes from i-40 to downtown durham. the alternate, 55 westbound from i-40 to the durham freeway for now at least. it will save you time. and seeing very heavy delays from garner looking at 30 to 40
