county. firefighters from wake county will go and spend a week in the lake lure area, near asheville but on the other side. ground-level smoke will remain a concern over the next few days. winds along ridge tops are expected to increase through today and may expand the fire. the fires have burned more than 40,000 acres in our state alone and there are also fires in georgia, south carolina, and tennessee, firefighters that acres. arson is expected in many of the fires. it will be tough until we get a decent amount of rain there. back to you. >> bill, thank you. while it's beautiful, we aren't getting rain to help out with the wildfires. every front since hurricane matthew has not produced much rain at off. we had under .50" with the front that came through earlier

let's take a look at the museum skycam and you can see lots of sunshine over downtown raleigh looking from the north carolina museum of natural sciences. 34 in wake forest, and the sunshine is warming things up just a touch. 41 in goldsboro and 32 in roxboro and south hill. still cold near the virginia line but by lunchtime, the afternoon. and we'll jump into the 70s by the end of the week and a front will bring us cold air by sunday. we'll talk about the transition through the weekend in just a few minutes. brian's here with the busy roads out there. it's indeed busy with the durham freeway, huge delays northbound because the left lane is blocked at alston

40 to mangum street. for now at least we're looking at 8 minutes here but i am sure as a lot of people run into the backups on the northbound side of the freeway, they will scoot over to 55 and those travel times will begin to worsen a bit. and i have pretty good news in garner, an earlier crash 40 westbound at jones sausage road that backeds up out of johnston county and we are getting back from 42 to 440. and 440 wade, watching the traffic from garner starting to move into south raleigh from the earlier delays and wade to 540, 8 minutes on 40 westbound. another crash that looks like it's just clearing up on chapel hill road at i-40 between cary and raleigh, 54, chapel hill

ballots before the general election. and it will be weeks before wake county will take up the student assignment proposal. students from mills park elementary could be moved to fill hortons creek elementary. parents are upset saying it splits their community and hortons creek would become over crowded. school board members want to look at the numbers one more time before making a decision. facebook may hold clues to the mu summer. chad copely is accused of shooting the victim in august. copely told the 911 dispatcher he was, quote, locked and loaded and intended to security his neighborhood because people at a nearby party were, quote, using profanity. police reports show no evidence that the victim was armed or on copely's property. police want to look at facebook

claims it shows what happened and it's murder. we are working to learn more about a disturbing tweet from the account called triton blue crew, and it posted information about the athletic teams. triton high is in erwin in harnett county. a tweet posted said everyone wear white tomorrow to continue to show their supp football team. that's not the disturbing tweet. it was the one that came after it overnight. that one reads, don't forget to wear white to remember show your support for #whitesupremacy, #trump2016. again this, tweet has been deleted. we are reaching out from the school and the district to find out who runs the could and what, if any, oversight the school has over it.

one or the other. snow for a while and then back to 70. looking at the fayetteville skycam. the sunshine is warming up quickly, and now it's 40 degrees at the airport and winds are calm and dew points in the 30s, and looking at 39 and it's looking like on the cameras, patchy fog and not much of it out there. 30s in south hill and brocksboro but looking in the low to mid-40s elsewhere. these temperatures are below where we were yesterday and significantly so from south hill to clinton and erwin and fayetteville with warm conditions yesterday. high pressure will keep things dry for sometime. take a look at the map. the next rain is back here in the pacific northwest or up here around the great lakes. none of that is coming

the time is now 8:30. the durham county board of elections is meeting right now to discuss whether a request to recount tens of thousands of votes is valid. >> the general counsel said that 94,000 ballots cannot be trusted. emmy victor is live in durham with more. emmy? >> reporter: renee, the durham county board of minutes ago. now, right before this meeting, there was a group of people outside with signs saying our votes count. now, that advocacy group as well as the other people outside have since gone into the building for the meeting. the room inside is quite packed. seating on a first come, first serve basis. the public is welcome into the meeting but there is no opportunity for the public to speak.

at 39. so it will feel really nice. 36 in roxboro and 44 in fayetteville and goldsboro and 43 in south hill and 40 at the airport. so what's going on? we have a big area of high pressure. look how much of the country is dry right now all the way from almost pennsylvania back to the great lakes and the rockies and toward it is gulf coast we are dry thanks to a high system. we have sinking air surrounding it, and this is a pretty big one encompassing a big part of the country and keeping the precipitation away. we had a very cool start this morning and temperatures in the low to mid-40s in spots thanks to the northwesterly flow. the high will pick up and move eastward and drive some of the

friday and saturday. it will feel nice. and we can see that with the range of temperatures. here is where the high pressure system is right there. around this side of the high we have a northerly flow and that pushed the cool air in. as the high picks up and shifts eastward to about here we have more of a southwesterly flow to the west, calm on friday and it puts us into the nice warm air. yo in yellow. that won't last long. we will get back into a northwesterly flow with the cold air moving back in sunday, sunday night, monday, and monday night, coast weather. we don't get into the warm air any time soon until at least the middle of next week with temperatures belowarily. 67 today and tomorrow, and the normal high, 63, 64 this time of year and 73 on friday.
