wind tore through you. it will be breezy today but not as windy as yesterday. gusts to 20 instead of 30. look at this beautiful sun glow in durham. a gorgeous sight. the sun is pretty lighting things up. 31 in durham, 30 in holly springs, 26 in carey, 32 in south hill, all the towns in our viewing area at least on below freezing except fayetteville at 34. temperatures will climb into the 32 degree range at 8 a.m. at lunchtime 48, and mid-50s for highs this afternoon. lots of sunshine today. we have a cold front that will get here just in time for thanksgiving morning. we'll talk about how that may affect your weather then. coming up in just a few minutes, bryan is here with a look at a real mess there at the split of i-40 and i-85.

with a truck that was carrying bananas. and the driver of that truck fell asleep. the truck overturned. the driver is not badly hurt, but look at this big backup we're tracking right now on 85 northbound or 40 eastbound. you know they are both numbered there as you head into hillsborough from the west. and then they split off there in hillsborough and 40 goes on down toward chapel hill and 85 to durham. these are the delays just before you get to the split and mess. we have the inside lanes blocked in both directions. wral's mikaya thurmond arrived on the scene. and are there bananas on the road? a lot of people are asking me this morning on twitter. >> reporter: that's exactly right, bryan. and in fact it smells like bananas which is not a good thing for me, necessarily. take a look right behind me. exactly as you said, 85 southbound is where all this happened.

when the tractor-trailer went left off of the road and overturned and struck the guardrail as many as many cones. where you see all the workers is where most of the bananas are. you can see they've got a fork they're using to pick up most of the mess and move the median back to where it is supposed to be. they got two lanes here closed on the southbound lanes, and it appears to be one lane in the northbound lane is closed as w closed for about 2 to 3 more hours and we do also know that the driver is expected to be charged in this case for careless and reckless driving. so allow yourself extra time. we did just head up this way. not seeing any traffic delays on either direction. >> thanks. let's talk about alternate routes to get around the mess this morning, especially if you're coming in from the west toward chapel hill or toward durham on

hillsborough, rejoin 85 on the other side of that mess. it will probably save you 5 to 10 minutes so you might consider doing that. as we head deeper into the 7:00 hour i think those eastbound delays on i-40 are going to build. major routes, not looking bad. typical delays on garner on westbound, otherwise quiet. pedestrian struck on pleasant valley road. we're seeing heavy delays on the inbound side of glenwood avenue so you need to allow extra time heading through the area. report of a crash on durant road and capitol boulevard and also at trailer road. those are minor accidents as far as we can tell. no serious injuries and big backups according to sensors. 17 minutes through garner this morning from 4 it up to 440 on westbound.

overworked crews on the front line fire. fortunately that fire did not grow outside the containment lines. the size remains at about 7,000 acres. 36% contained. officials allowed residents and business owners who evacuated chemney rock village to return today. in ashe county a brush fire was sparked by a house fire. it is growing. a tense standoff continues this morning between police and protesters against the dakota access pipeline. an estimated 400 protesters were involved initially. at last check, that number was down to about 100. police fired tear gas and rubber bullets into the protesters overnight. this in an effort to stop them

the protesters say they were fired on while trapped on the bridge and shot with a water canon in subfreezing temperatures. firefighters say they're putting out a fire started by protesters. wake county board of commissioners will report today on the state of the county. his presentation during today's county board meeting is expected to touch on areas such as economic strength, growth, and education and provide a look at initiatives for next year. that meeting starts at 2 p.m. durham city council members take vote on police body cameras today. they're considering a contract to authorize the cameras. they could spend $282,000 for a period of five years to buy the cameras. law enforcement agencies are launching their click it or ticket operation today. officials will be looking for any type of illegal activity which includes

course, dwi. last year officials had 41,000 traffic and criminal violations. wake county had the highest number of incidents with more than 2700. departments across the country are alert and mourning after attacks on several police officers. >> investigations are underway in four different cities. the warning for officers to stay

we're following a developing story this morning. four police officers shot in four different u.s. cities. >> three officers were hospitalized and one has died, all in a span of 24 hours. the most recent shooting was in missouri in kansas city where there was a shootout at a traffic stop. an officer and two suspects were shot. one of the suspects died. the officer is in critical but stable condition, no update yet on the second suspect's condition. st. louis say an officer sitting in traffic was shot twice in the face but is expected to live. police say another car pulled alongside the officer's marked patrol vehicle early yesterday evening and fired at least twice and then pulled away. police say the gunman died in a shootout with officers. in san antonio, texas, an officer was writing a traffic ticket and he was killed. police say the gunman walked up to the

and shot 50-year-old benjamin marconi twice, killing him. police don't believe the shooter has a relationship to the original driver pulled over. a person of interest is in custody. in florida, a suspect is in custody after shooting a police officer during a traffic stop as well. the suspect was captured after exchanging gunfire with officers. the officer was treated at the hospital and releesd. police departments -- released. police departments across the country are vigilant. two teens are accused of killing the grandson of danny davis. a 16-year-old boy and 17-year-old girl killed wilson over a fight over clothes and shoes. they say the teens went to the victim's apartment to get shoes and an argument escalated.

temperatures have started to come up about. 7:17 right now. we don't see much of a warmup until the 8:00 hour but the temperatures are creeping up from the 20s this morning in many spots. and it's a bit colder than it was yesterday in some places. 6 degrees colder in roxboro. so here's what's happening. we have a huge area of high pressure, we have low pressure bringing some snow to parts of the northeast, including new york, and around the high and the low we have winds blowing into our area north northwest. and it's still going to be blustery today, winds at 20 miles an hour instead of 30 miles per hour yesterday. back off to the west, a cold front, it starts to get cranked up as it approaches the mississippi valley. we'll see impacts on wednesday and thursday from that. we'll talk about that in a moment. we're heading to the tropics

16. it is likely to be a named storm by the end of the week and its name would be otto. we're on the "o" storm, moving west at 1 mile per hour but drifting. winds at 35 miles an hour. a look at the forecast track, it may become a hurricane by wednesday night, early thursday morning, and then back down to a tropical storm as it crosses central america and then moves on off into the pacific. so it's not something that's likely to affect the united states, but just in case you did we get that "o" storm from. mid-50s today and tomorrow but our morning lows are close to or below freezing for thursday and wednesday morning. if you have to travel thursday morning the weather looks good. that 60 degrees ton wednesday is close to normal. 61 is our normal for this time of year. it could be as cold as 35 this time of

transfer truck that was caring bananas. it overturned, and the cleanup is likely for a few more hours. thankfully the driver was not hurt in that crash but the backups are heavy as you come in from the western side of orange county towards hillsborough trying to get to durham. the delays are in advance of 70 as you head into hillsborough, your alter meat route is 70 eastbound and you can pick up 85 on the other side of the accident. to get to chapel hill on 40 eastbound, you probably are going to need to cut through hillsborough and pick up 86 and head down and pick up i-40 on that side of the accident. there are no too many good alternate routes as come in from the western side of orange county. so think about using 70, that's the bottom line here this morning. around the triangle, major routes looking

we are coming up on 7:30. good morning, and welcome back. the state board of elections will hold a major meeting in raleigh tomorrow and that is to decide legal matters related to a rash of election complaints filed with more than 50 county boards of elections. >> this meeting follows an emergency meeting yesterday to discuss governor mccrory's challenges to elections results. emmy victor joins us with a closer look. emmy. >> reporter: lena, the members of the state board of elections say process. the complaints given to the counties will be handled by the counties themselves. this is a discussion they had for nearly two hours yesterday. they discussed more than 50 counties in which these complaints were filed. the complaints were mostly filed by governor mccrory's supporters. the concerns include allegations of deceased voters, voters with active felonies and voters that voted

i-40. the inside lane there on 40 eastbound is blocked. looks like all of our lanes on the westbound side of 40 are open but the eastbound side is getting pretty badly backed up. if you're trying to get to durham on 85 and 40, consider using 70 as your best alternate route. to get around the delays. pick up 85 on the other side of the backups. if you're trying to get to chapel hill, your best bet is to stick with th on 40 eastbound heading down towards chapel hill. a caller in the newsroom tipped us off to use burlington. i didn't think about that as an alternate alternate. so, we will keep our eyes on it. this is a problem for the rest
