coverage starting with amanda lamb who spoke to a woman who says she saw the exchange between the man killed and the officers? >> reporter: yes, apparently a lot of people saw it. here's how it started. members of violence incident response team were patrolling in the area, there because there had been an up tick in crime. they stopped to question the man, the suspect, there was a struggle, and then he was and killed. people watch the investigation unfold after one of their neighbors known as scooter bug was killed by police. >> so i was in the window, and i seen scooter bug come around the building. >> reporter: this woman who doesn't want tuberculosis identified for -- to be identified for fear of retaliation saw the shooting

>> he didn't have anything, and as he was about to turn around they held him, a gun wouldn't off -- went off. >> reporter: the police chief says they got into a struggle when he suddenly reached for his waistband. >> they heard a gunshot. >> reporter: the third officer to arrive fired multiple shots. >> >. he tried to empty the were like stop shooting. >> reporter: the witness never saw the suspect with a gun, but investigators say they found one near his body. >> a gun that was not the property of the durham police department was located next to the body at the scene. >> he didn't shoot no gun. if he did have a gun he didn't shoot it. very disturbing. that's disturbing. >> reporter: now one officer was injured according to the chief and was taken to the hospital.

placed on administrative duty. sarah has also been covering this today, and one of the big questions is was there police video and it's my understanding there was not. >> reporter: that's right, right now durham police don't have body cameras, but the durham city council ironically enough voted last night to fund the purchase of body cameras for them. they're not going to roll out though until early january, but the chief says what happened today is just of how important they are. >> we want to community to be safe for the kids, walk down the street and not here bullets. >> reporter: police tape lining the streets, a sign of the sadness many in the community feel after a man was shot and killed right here by police. >> i'm thinking it's a triage dilling, a life was -- tragedy, a life was taken. we need to work together and come up with a plan.

believes it should include more communication and transparency from police, something the body camera could help. less than 24 hours before the shooting, the durham city council voted to give the funding for the body cameras. >> it does increase the need. it was already very apparent to us to provide clarity in situations like this. video either. they'll work together with the community to heal she says and build trust. >> we don't, um, expect to just walk away, investigate, we want to make sure that the relationship we're attempting to build here in the city of durham is one that is collaborative, inclusive, transparent as well. >> reporter: and the police chief says once the body cameras do roll out the district where the shooting

working there will be the first ones to get the body cameras. back to you. >> thank you for the update. now we're still waiting for police to release the name of the man killed in today's shooting as well as the names of officers involved. look for any overnight updates as we get them on this investigation on our morning news starting at 4:30 on wral and at 7:00 on fox 50. and breaking tonight in lumberton, an officer involved shooting that put a man in the hospital. this happened around 6:00 p.m. at the dollar highway 401 and martin luther king boulevard. the robinson county sheriff's office couldn't tell us who was shot or the six surrounding the -- circumstances surrounding the shooting. no officers were hurt. a man hunt is underway in detroit after a wayne state police officer was shot in the head. he was shot after he stopped a man on a bike.

investigating a deadly crash that shut down part of creedmore road tonight. the accident happened just before 6:30. police say one adult was killed in the crash, and a second adult and two children were taken to the hospital for treatment, but haven't released names or said how serious their injuries are. police are still investigating the cause of the crash. a prayer vigil held tonight in chattanooga, tennessee. a church was overflowing with people coming out to mourn the in yesterday's horrific school bus crash. they sang songs and prayed for the victims and their families. tonight the bus driver is in jail, charged in the deaths of five students. the 24-year-old walker was speeding along a narrow and winding road and wrapped the bus around a tree. 35 elementary school students were on the bus, and tonight 12 are still in the hospital, 6 in critical condition. capital boulevard in raleigh is back open to traffic

city crews shut the road down for more than 36 hours to deal with a water main break. crewshad to make repairs and repave some of the road. protesters offered to help the governor move out of his office. wral news on fox 50 with lynda loveland, gerald owens, and meteorologist mike maze. >. when an investigation is complete, an amusement park ride in kansas will never operate again. over the summer a 10-year-old boy suffered a neck injury and died after riding the slide. the water slide was billed as the tallest in the world featuring a 168-foot, 17 story drop. safety was always a concern. because of that, the park's owner said if the courts agree, the ride will be demolished. new tonight durham police

found yesterday. police say the 29-year-old's body was found near the railroad checks, and he was shot. police are investigating this as a homicide. anyone with information about this shooting should call the durham police. a man charged with kidnapping a 6-year-old girl from her home in wilmington faces more charges tonight. he sent the victim a letter asking her not to testify against him. edwards was watching the girl play in her front yard in september before snatching her. the girl was the next day tied to a tree and covered with mosquito bites. investigators believe someone intentionally set a fire in blowing rock in two locations. the fire could burn a thousand acres before being contained. mandatory evacuations are underway in the area. the american red cross opened a shelter for people having to leave their homes.

a water main broke in southern cary this afternoon, and it effects about 120 homes in the mcgregor subdivision. all customers should boil the water for a minute before using it or use bottled water. the raleigh rescue mission is preparing for another cold night. the organization puts out the white flag when it drops below 38 degrees, and bring in mats and blankets to accommodate as anyone needing a warm place to sleep is encouraged to get out of cold. you can donate any of the items you see on the screen to the raleigh rescue mission. the dot wants to make sure it's prepared for the winter weather before the snow and ice falls. during a preposition today maintenance crews checked out equipment like the spreaders and plows and stocked up on salt so the storage barn is full gloom for many of us getting ready for winter means

and there's several trough, one offshore, one in the nation's mid section, and one out west, and the problem with the ones lately they don't dip far enough south to pull up moisture to feed the fronts that come in. this one is making its way to the east to develop some rain and snow up north, but getting closer to us it flattens out, and won't have the moisture to produce a lot of rain in north carolina. this is the one on thursday, and this is the one moving through friday. finally clearing it out for the holiday weekend. but we see looks like there will be a change in the upper level weekend pattern next week, and may be more conducive to produce rain in the eastern part of country. this is the precipitation trend next week, talking about wetter than normal conditions. everywhere we see green, 30 percent chance of wetter than normal weather. this shade of green is greater than 40 percent in north carolina. that's next week, and this year

with the change in the upper level wind pattern we may see a better opportunity of seeing frontings come in with more moisture, and that's good news, and the temperature trend in the same period of time calls for above normal temperatures, so if you like it on the milder side that may be the case next week too. talking about a 30 percent chance, 40 percent chance, and for us about a 50/50 shot of temperatures warmer than normal, and to the north about a 60 percent chance. so warmer and wetter perhaps next week. we'll see how this whole if it pans out. back to the tropics and now looking at hurricane otto. 7th high pressure of the season, 15th -- hurricane of the season, 15th named storm. not a strong storm. top winds at 75 miles per hour. parts of south america coastline have a watch in effect. we showed this last night, and the path and intensities haven't changed a lot.
