as we look to the east we can see some cloud cover. along the i-95 quarter you are starting to the clouds break a. the cold front has moved through and the rain is over. you can see our radar loop some showers around 5 am in the eastern part of the viewing area but that has shifted eastward. we are seeing clinton from downtown raleigh westward and we will continue to see clearing in the eastern viewing area. temperatures are dropping. we started in the low to mid 60s. it's now 56 in cary. you will need a jacket everywhere from the triangle and westward. 59 in southern pond. the coolest air has not yet arrived from rocky mount and clinton were temperatures are in the low to mid 60s. at 8 am expect mid to upper 50s. at lunch, 62. we bounce back into the mid-60s this afternoon. lots of sunshine. it will be beautiful with temperatures above normal. cool air will continue to spell

of the weekend. we will check that out in the seven day forecast. looking at the roads this morning, it's tough coming in from south of raleigh. if you're coming up i-40, this is the usual backup at the clayton bypass. to miles down the road, this in western johnston county, very slow going. plan some extra time coming in on i-40 from johnston county and southern wake county into downtown raleigh. back to you guys. authorities say one person is dead after a crash and southern wake county. this call came in at 2 am. one vehicle crash on fayetteville road. both wake county deputies and the highway patrol where they are. trip the sheriff's office there was a second person in the vehicle who left the scene. we are working to learn more about the victim and what caused the crash. three men are in jail, arrested in connection with the shooting in the room.

murder charges in the death of eric ray. charges also are pending against a fourth suspects, keith laney. he is serving time for another case. the victim was killed while walking home from work along andrew avenue in october. the suspects will make their first appearance later this morning. several dozen people protested last night in charlotte. they gathered outside the police headquarters to protest a prosecutor's decision not to charge a police officer in the shooting death of keith scott. held a moment of silence outside the omni hotel where justin carr was killed during a protest in september. last night's event was mostly peaceful. officers arrested three people for obstructing traffic. protests come after mekelburg county district attorney andrew murray announced he and a dozen prosecutors decided unanimously that officer brently vinson acted lawfully when he shot keith scott in september. the da said scott pulled a gun

scott's family said they are disappointed by the decision and they say they will pursue legal options. strip now to the wildfires in eastern tennessee. the white house at that president obama has spoken with the tennessee governor and has offered his sympathy and support for residents. the death toll climbed to seven. wildfires are also blamed for destroying hundreds of homes and businesses. 14 fires burned crossed 15,000 acres in sevier county. many residents of the devastation has torn apart the community. back to their homes. tens of thousands of votes and durham county must be recounted. this was the decision from the state board of elections last night. it involves more than 90,000 votes delayed over a technical glitch on election night. an issue with a voting machine memory card meant that election workers had to transcribe manually the vote totals. the votes pushed attorney roy cooper ahead of governor mccrory in the governor's race.

ordered the recount. the voters of north carolina now have the opportunity to have full and complete confidence in the results that came out of durham county. >> while some say the recount could happen quickly, other say it could take a few days. the new vote total in the gubernatorial race. democrat roy cooper is leading pat mccrory by more than 10,000 votes. 10,000 votes is the threshold for calling for an recount. cooper is ahead by 10,257 votes. june atkinson attends her last state board of education been today as in north carolina superintendent of public instruction. in last month's election, she lost the job she held for three terms to republican mark johnson. he is a school board member in winston-salem. she said she was both shocked and saddened that she lost. the meeting gets underway at 9 am and we will have a report on wral news at noon.

this time of year. 50 and roxborough. 49 in greensboro. when i came in we had 60s. now temperatures have dropped as a winds shift from the northwest bringing the cool air in. 62 in rocky mount. 60 in fayetteville. he will probably need a jacket this morning but not a heavy coat. you can see who was starting to see those cooler temperatures first. it's cooler in greensboro than it was at this time yesterday. the change is not as dramatic in the eastern part of the viewing area. we finished november. today is december 1. we do consider it the first day of meteorological winter. what does that mean? we consider all of december part of winter and not just on the 21st or 22nd. generally the month of december all month long we have winter light conditions. it's not starting that way so much today. rainfall for november. we had a little over a half inch. that puts us 2.5 inches below normal. the warmest day was 83rd there is 83.

an inch of rain. the warmest day was 84 on the third and the coldest was 28 on the 23rd. rainfall for december is typically about three inches. hopefully we will see more normal conditions. we do have a chance for rain sunday night into early next week. also usually have an average snowfall of over a half inch. we don't always see that. our high temperature begins the month at 58 in our average high but the end of the month is 51. the bit during the month of december. we are clear for most of the viewing area. we will have cool air spilling in behind the front. we will start to feel that. with sunshine today we warm up to 65. this evening we are excited about our tabulating here on wral. you can tune in and the 5:00

days. here is belt line at us 64. the traffic is moving very slowly in this direction. everything looks much better. slow going if you are coming into raleigh on i-40. is also looking better at jones sausage road. as you approach the clayton bypass we have that typical backup there. we are following a developing story out of tacoma washington where a standoff is underway police officer was shot and killed on the job. authorities say the officer was shot multiple times while responding to a domestic violence call. he died a few hours later. the suspect is believed to be barricaded in a home with a rifle. the neighborhood remains on lockdown. we will continue to follow the story throughout the morning. authorities have captured a fourth inmate who escaped from a county jail. this after a standoff that lasted for several hours.

at a house in san jose. they also arrested a woman on suspicion of harboring a fugitive. shabbos and another in the there is inmate have been on the run since last week. police captured two other inmates who escaped with them. investigators say it's too soon to call the attack an ohio state university terrorism. they do believe it may have been inspired by isis or a former al qaeda leader. officer say that abdul is r. kelly our time bought and i for if that was the weapon used on campus monday. a police officer killed our time after the 18-year-old drove his car into a crowded area and slashed people with a knife. jury deliberations continue in the murder trial of former north charleston police officer michael slager. attorneys gave closing arguments yesterday. the jury deliberated for about an hour before dismissing for the night. slater is accused of killing walter scott who ran from the scene of a traffic stop it was shot in the back.

the jury could also consider a lesser charge of manslaughter. major progress is being made in the fight to retake mosul from islamic state militants. iraq special forces now control 19 neighborhoods on the eastern side of the city. that is still only about 15% of iraq's largest city. yesterday, iraqi army troops came under attack in an area southeast of mosul from isis militants stationed on the opposite bank of the tigris river. the campaign began in october. 1 million residents are still in unicef said nearly half the residents have been cut off from access to clean water. a plane carrying a brazilian soccer team may have run out of fuel before crashing in columbia. the pilot initially requested to land because of fuel problems without making a formal distress call. and air traffic controller told the pilot to wait seven minutes for another plane with mechanical problems to land. the pilot later reported complete electrical file without fuel. the plane started a four minute

welcome back. it's 7:30 am. we are trying to learn about a shooting that left an officer and the suspect injured. >> this happened at a condominium complex in southwest raleigh. amy victor is live outside wakemed were both the officer and the suspect are this morning. >> reporter: police tell us that the officer has serious injuries. they are non-life-threatening. as for the suspect, that person is in police have not released the names of the suspect or the police officer. this began yesterday afternoon. the gunfire happened at the lake park condos in southwest raleigh. this quickly became a chaotic crime scene. police say officers showed up to respond to a break-in. as a result of gunshots, the officer and the suspect sustained wounds. both were rushed to the hospital to be treated for

duke university sent out a crime alert to its students after a reported sexual assault near campus. a woman told police she was walking on swift avenue from duke university road just after 10 am. she said she encountered a man who took her into the woods and sexually assaulted her at knife point. so far, no arrests. blue cross blue shield of north carolina is preparing for hundreds of thousands of new obama care customers. the company spokesman's tells wral they hired hundreds of additional staff to handle extra enrollments. the insurer is the only company offering marketplace coverage and all 100 north carolina counties. additional staffing fall is what many considered a disaster with 2016 enrollment. they say this year the key is to enroll now. the deadline is december 15 to start coverage january 1. number of women's health groups filed a federal lawsuit

abortion law. the aclu, planned parenthood and the center for reproductive rights filed the suit specifically it claims the ban on abortions after the 20th week of pregnancy prevents doctors from providing proper care for patients. it also said that women with fewer resources may not be able to access care before the 20th week because of what it calls political hurdles. the groups also filed legal challenges in missouri and alaska. hometown leaders were holding a meeting tonight to figure out what to do after devastating floods from hurricane matthew. something that's likely toom allow the federal government to buy residents out of their homes. some people said they want to move to safer, higher ground. other say allowing buyouts would help the town and its tax base. roughly 2 dozen princeville residents have formally shown interest in a buyout. tonight's meeting starts at 7:00. hurricane matthew is one reason why local pecans are hard to find right now. the state department of

afternoon. we close the books on november yesterday. that ends the hurricane season in the atlantic for 2016. what happened was pretty close to the forecast. 10-16 name storms and we saw 15. 4-8 hurricanes and we saw 7. we had nicole and gaston as major hurricanes in the atlantic. we had a storm system go through overnight. we had wind damage near charlotte but lot of tornadoes from east tennessee down through the deep south with that front yesterday. we were thankful it came through with very little issues for us. it would have been nice to have more rain. in total we had about an average of a quarter inch across the viewing area. the next thing that happens is cool air coming in behind the front. we will see dry conditions and sunshine for today, friday and saturday. on sunday we track the next system which is likely to bring us a chance for rain sunday

good morning. i'm brian shrader with a look at the top local stories. we're looking at a story that injured an officer and a suspect at the lake park condos and southwest raleigh. officers were responding to a break and when shots rang out. police of the officers injuries were serious but not life- threatening. the suspect is listed in critical condition. names have not been released. the family of a man killed in an officer involved shooting is responding to a newly released report on the incident. frank clark was killed last week at mcdougald terrace
