baseless. >> reporter: at his lawyer's direction, barry did not speak at the news conference, in part because it's not clear that the u.s. attorney's office will even file formal charges in this confusing incident that occurred july 4th in and around anacostia park southeast. park police say early saturday evening, an officer was flagged down by watts who aegedly complained barry was stalking her. the officer interviewed barry and watts who was with her ex-husband and charged barry with misdemeanor stalking. bar barry says the two had planned a weekend trip to ruhopeehoboth b returning to washington. the park incident, which no one has fully explained, occurred a short time later. >> we believe that the charge stems from a personal relationship that has gone horribly wrong in a lot of ways. >> reporter: in the three-page statement, donna watts mentioned

her relationship with barry, an interest in public affairs, but sheds no light on the saturday incident. barry, 73 and separated but not divorced from his fourth wife, has stayed at the watts home in southeast, according to many neighbors who often see his car there. donna watts' ex-husband, who apparently still helps her with her children, allegedly has exchanged hostile words with barry in the past, so much so that barry last week had him barred from d.c. council offices. barry has a court date for thursday. that's when he'll find out if he'll face formal charges or if this case will be dropped. wendy, back to you. >> thank you, tom. the district's bill that would recognize gay marriages that are performed in other states, it is due to become law at midnight tonight. it was passed in may. congress has 30 days to object to any d.c. law and so far it has not objected. a judge has already thrown out a separate effort that would put the gay marriage issue to a referendum. that judge ruled that a

a high-speed chase through the streets of houston, texas today. police say the guy they were chasing was wanted for burglary. he took off in a white minivan. that vehicle sped and swerved along a highway before it went into a residential area. the guy eventually drove into a parking garage and ditched the van. after a short chase, he then jumped off the roof of the parking garage. they arrested him right away. the guy was apparently injured as police did not immediately place him into a cruiser. the city of l.a. is getting ready for tomorrow's very public large memorial service for michael jackson. there was an important court ruling today over who will control his estate. a judge gave temporary control to two executors named in jackson's will. >> reporter: today a los angeles judge has ruled that for now,

condominium in nashville leased by mcnair. police say 36-year-old mcnair and the 20-year-old woman had been dating the past several months. authorities are calling mcnair's death a homicide. however, they have not reached any conclusions yet on the death of kazemi. a manhunt is under way in south carolina for a man accused of murdering five people in one week. officials are looking for a man who is in this sketch. all five victims were shot to death in the town of gaffney, south carolina. a vigil was held friday to remember those victims. one of the victims was laid to rest yesterday. the sheriff says leads continue to pour in and the shootings are linked through evidence. >> the investigators or the task force is building a case on him. we're just hoping we're inching closer to him. >> cherokee county authorities say the victims do not appear to have any previous connection to each other. more than 150 people have

been killed in riots in china over the weekend. it is the deadliest ethnic unrest to hit china in many decades. it happened on the streets of a city in western china. authorities say they expect the death toll to go up. the riots and the street battles injured more than 800 people. the violence began when tensions boiled over between china's ethnic muslims and china's majority people. the rioters overturned vehicles and attacked buildings. the violence began after police fired into a crowd of peaceful protesters. the main airport in honduras closed today. violence broke out there yesterday when the interim government refused to allow a plane carrying ousted president manuel zelaya to land. zelaya's supporters clashed with the police. at least one person was killed.

nothing much going on in the tropics. there you can see that band of rains and clouds in the southeast. this is a few tropical storm out in the pacific. but moving away from any land areas, pacific and the tropics starting to warm up. look at the monsoon clouds in india and part of southeastern asia. and also lookt that area of cloudiness and storminess in europe. this is what it's been like. while we've been having a dray pattern, ougaustria has really n suffering under some heavy, heavy rains and flooding. some of the worst they've had in years, concern about the danube. they have to deal with the mud. so back home for us, we don't have any of that. matter of fact, our pattern begins to really take on a little bit of a drier pattern with temperatures in the 80s. remember back in june, how wet we were, we had an active jet, moisture and cool air above us.

robbed them. police say it is not the first time that these robbers have struck. darcy spencer has our report. >> reporter: prince georges county police are investigating three home invasion robberies at they believe could be connected. they happened this morning at 4:00, 5:00, and 6:00 a.m. residents are on edge. >> we saw a lot of police dogs and police activity. >> early this morning. >> it seemed like they were looking for something. >> they were definitely looking for something. my son was scared. >> reporter: the masked men broke into the homes, bound the victims and robbed them at gunpoint. at least one case, a resident reported that her big screen tv was taken. >> in looking into that, we'll see exactly how they got into the homes. i do know that there were homes belongs to three families and one family did have children. it's unknown at this time which location had the children. >> reporter: the robberies happened in the 6600 block of district heights parkway and the

2800 block of crestwood place as well as the 8600 block o fulton avenue. the homes are just a few miles apart. >> but as always, we want neighbors to be vigilant. we want them to watch out for each other, keep their doo and windows locked when they're home and when they're not. >> reporter: police say the victims were only able to offer vague descriptis of the robbers. there was no report of a getaway vehicle. back in may, police announced there had been a 50% increase in home invasion robberies in the county so far this year. in response, officials redeployed administrative officers to enhance patrol squads. police officials say the group of robbers responsible for today's crimes may also be responsible for other home invasion robberies in the county in recent months. they say it's possible the victims were targeted. they are stepping up patrols in the area. darcy spencer, news4. >> anyone with information about any of this is asked to call the

prince georges county police. john leopold is urging the district to do a better job securing its juvenile detention center in laurel. six teenagers escaped yesterday afternoon. they were later recaptured. new beginnings was previously known as the oak hills detention center. it was recently reopened. this is the second report of an escape from that facility in a month. they're trying to figure out what caused a deadly house fire over the weekend. it happened on saturday night on wheeling road. two bodies were recoveredrom that burning home. one of the bodies was found on the first floor. the other was in the basement. those victims have not yet been identified. the virginia department of transportation announced today that 18 rest areas are being shut down in an effort to save money. they'll be closing this month. plans were announced to close 19 rest areas. today they said 18 slated to

close will close on july 21st. the only exception is the west manassas welcome center on i-66. that stop will close september 16th. virginia is dealing with a more than $2.5 billion shortfall in the transportation budget. >> we're now learning the identities of the two people killed in a plane crash in southwestern virginia. the former chief executive of the checkers drive-in chain was the pilot of the plane when it crashed yesterday morning. his wife, cindy, also was killed. just before the plane crashed, the pilot had radioed that a piece of his plane had fallen off aha tt he would attempt to land at the lynchburg regional airport, but he never made it. the plane crashed on a farm in rock bridge county just north of roanoke. the men and women of the fairfax city fire and rescue department were forced to spring into action this weekend while they were participating in the city's fourth of july parade.

they were waving flags along the parade route when they noticed a man in the midst of a medical emergency. jane watrel has our report. >> reporter: it was an all-american scene. as firefighters from the city of fairfax greeted the patriotic crowds gathered at the annual fourth of july parade. >> it was pretty much waving at people and saying hi to the little kids and people telling us to hit our air horns. >> reporter: all of a sudden, the festivities took a dramatic turn as an nbc4 viewer captured what happened next. >> a woman had kind of run after me and actually grabbed me on the back of the shoulder and startled me and said that her -- her dad had actually had a heart attack. >> reporter: eight firefighters and paramedics sprung into action. before hundreds of parade watchers. they gave an on the spot demonstration in life saving. stabilizing the patient and loading him into an ambulance. >> we did it in front of a crowd and at the end of it, we got a

standing ovation. i don't think we've ever run a call where people actually applauded what we did. some people, unless they watch rescue 911 or see it, they don't know what we do. >> reporter: in a matter of minutes, the patient was on his way to the hospital. while the dramatic response created a long gap in the parade, firefighters quickly gathered up their medical supplies, jumped back on their trucks and resumed the festivities, knowing another life had been saved. >> but it was challenging enough that the public got to see their firefighters and medics in action and so we're very proud of them and are glad that the public got a chance to see them as well. >> the victim is in fair condition at the hospital recovering in no small part from the quick actions of the firefighters that were in and along the fourth of july parade. in the city of fairfax, jane watrel, news4. and it wasn't over for the fairfax city firefighters after that. it was a busy day.

an emotional jeff fisher talking about his former quarterback. the nationals open a three-game series in colorado tonight. ryan zimmerman will take the field knowing he's an all-star. he found out yesterday he will be heading to st. louis as a reserve after providing one of the highlights in the national's struggli season. ryan zimmerman got off to a blazing start. he had a 30-game hitting streak. his offensive numbers better than last year's injury-prone season. so far this season he's batting .293 with 13 home runs. he's thrilled to represent the nationals at the all-star game next week in st. louis. >> you know, try and do everything you can. i think you might not ever get to do it again. so it's a huge honor. get my family to come out here. you know, you never know what's going to happen. take advantage of it and enjoy yourself and have fun. >> it's an honor because he was picked by his peers. so, i mean, the kid is being recognized now and i hope tt this is just the start of a

tonight, there is a new way to recognize u.s. troops back home from the war. a man in rockville has created bumper stickers to identify where the service member fought. the hope is that people will see the stickers and then thank the troops for their service to the united states. >> reporter: it's become comm commonplace for drivers to advertise where they've been. but now returning troops and their families will have a way to spotlight their perilous journey. these are the work of scott craiger who was struck with the idea while simply struggling with a way to do something for returning vet. >> i was hearing all these stories about people buying people in uniform groceries or

gas or, you know, when their at a restaurant, pay their bill. but how can you identify these soldiers inyou know, if they're not in unifm, how do you know that they served? >> reporter: he launched his sticker website on the fourth of july. it features a choice of free stickers and an opportunity to donate to the effort. he's processing the tax deductible contributions. and in less than two days, he's already received about 350 sticker requests. >> tre are a lot of things i didn't think about. i didn't realize how many soldiers actually serve in iraq and afghanistan. so i'm getting requests for both stickers. >> reporter: there's one from a soldier in tampa, florida, who served two tours. others from family members awaiting a loved one's safe return. >> thanks. this will be nice for my husband to have on his truck when he gets home in september. that's nice. >> reporter: the ultimate goal of the stickers is simple, to

allow the public to recognize iraq and afghanistan vets and to enable them to acknowledge each other. >> somebody sees this on somebody's car. they should feel comfortable to be going up to them and thanking them for their service. i envision veterans going up, knowing what they've gone through, and seeing if there's, you know, anything they can do for them. maybe hand them a business card. this is a way to increase communication, increase networking. >> reporter: for the time being, his wife and two children have agreed to fill out envelopes to send up the requests for stickers, but if the idea catches on, he may need some help soon. news4, montgomery county. >> he has had another surprise. he says he's heard from some vietnam vets who are urging a special stick acknowledging their service. craiger says he might end up adding that to his printing order as well. let's get an update on the forecast from bob. >> good idea. and we've got some great weather

spiritual and political leader, but he was forced into exile after a failed uprising back in 1959. he now flies around the world teaching buddhism and highlighting the tibetan struggle for freedom. his advancing age and recent medical problems have raised concerns about who will advance tibet's cause after his death. but he greeted this birthday with some of the humor for some he is known. he thanked his followers with his prayers for his long life and he joked that they might help him to live at least 100. sglrchl that's our broadcast for now.
