the passengers on that flight, michael cunningham, joining us on the telephone right now. mike, good evening to you. set the scene for me on that plane, buddy. what was it like? >> it was a normal flight. i was flying back home from visiting the family over the weekend. and i was taking a nap. i had my baseball cap down over my face. about half an hour into the flight, i heard the loudest roar i have ever heard in my life. the first thought that went through my head was simply the flight attendant knocked meovthg iner with aarg t or g.me inth >> rig . in >> i looked up and saw the sky, where i shouldn't be seeing it. eso, thir aheirus rut o ousf th cabin. it got very hot, very quickly and the mafbs dropped down just in time. descent into what we eventually found out was charleston was beautiful. no other problems besides the hole in the plane. >> what was going through your head during all of this, mike? >> the first thing that went through my head were all those tv shows where everybody freaks out and starts screaming.

says the recommendations are diverting attention away from the key question. why was there a failure of the safety system designed to prevent these types of collisions? >> we went to that precise location where this device malfunctioned. we took the device out. we put a new device in and it continued to malfunction. so, we're left with a bit of a mystery here. >> reporter: graham says that's why trains are still operating in manual mode at reduced speed. those who ride the rails say they do support creating the alert system, but they're concerned about the cost. >> if it's going to hurt people also because of the fact that meo is going to raise the prices and they're already getting raised as we speak now. >> it's kind of like a no-win situation. either it's going to be your pockets or your safety. >> reporter: metro's general manager, john cato, is expected on capitol hill tomorrow to testify about the crash as well as get an update on the investigation. the metro is also expected to discuss some of these ntsb

>> reporter: three months ago, barry blum could barely walk across this field. >> continuingliness, weakness, and my right side was weaker than my left. it got to the point where it was almost difficult to walk. >> reporter: a herniated disk was pushi on nerves along his cervical spine. that's the upper part in the neck. it was also causing him to lose feeling in his hands. >> the numbness is every day. you had constant numbness. you couldn't feel things, couldn't type. it's very hard to type, getting to the point it's hard to pick up items. >> by the time he saw me again, things worsened dramatically. >> reporter: it became so bad, his only option was surgery. washington hospital center neurosurgeon zachary levine says despite his worsening condition, he was the perfect candidate for a new procedure. doctors could replace his damaged disk with a new, artificial one, that would still allow movement in the neck. >> we're now able to achieve near nmal motion in the neck because, as you c see, it's

like a ball and socket joint. we are able to decompress the nerves of the spinal cord being injured and also preserve the motion. >> reporter: normally, blum's only option would be a spinal fusion where the disk is removed and spacer placed between the vertebrae. that can either leave patients without any mobility in the neck or a different disk could become diseased. but the artificial disk is held together by a special joint that allowed for movement. >> the patients traditionally do very well. they have very little residual pain and actually get relief almost immediately. >> reporter: blum says he was surprised how well, how fast the surgery worked. it's been three months and the pain is now 95% gone. >> maybe go back to my normal activities, everything i like to do, bike, motorcycle and just have an ability to walk normally was just -- you know, it changes your life. it really does. >> eun yang, news 4.

you just want to say, yeah, i think i'll stay around town, take it easy. our high temperature, 88 degrees. our low temperature, 77. very, very unusual day. and the low is 70. that was our average high and low. those usually don't happen. outside now, after being up at 88 degrees, we are now down to 75 degrees. and the low temperature did get down to 70. look at dallas right now. 94 degrees. our rainfall -- remember how wet it was, april until the early to middle part of june? rainfall then was eight inches above average. since then, more than two inches below average. look at the current dew point. that tells the story. how often do we see in the middle part of july, really dry air all the way, almost down into north carolina? we've had this pattern shift and pattern change. remember back in april and may

how moist it was? we were getting a lot of that rain coming our way. now we're into an overall dry pattern. it's a hot one. some places in texas have seen record-high temperatures, like austin, texas. 105 degrees today. there's the leading edge, that boundary of the showers. and the wet weather, which has just moved now into the tide water area. there's still a few showers just to the south. so, the humidity is not that far away. later on in the week, we'll probably be seeing it, down into the coast of north carolina, around wilmington, north carolina. here is why they couldn't get the shuttle off today, more showers coming through cocoa, florida. look at today, another tenth of an inch. they've had over four inches for the month. as we go through the nighttime hours, tomorrow morning, another beautiful morning. lot of sunshine with a dry, high pressure in on us. that will continue with light north to northwesterly winds right on in through wednesday. by the time we get into thursday, our winds begin to
