and good evening. jim and doreen are off. efforts continue to get the tguannmo enanrrsuder. rr falls chuh ot nar fot from tyson's. near intersection of mile avenue and fisher drive, darcy spencer has the latest. darcy? >> wendy, fairfax county police negotiators are trying to get the man to come out of the house. they have the house surrounded. they have for hours, but so far, he is not coming out. it is a massive police response in the falls church neighborhood. fairfax police were called to a home in the 7700 block of fisher drive around 6:30 for report of a shooting. a woman found lying on the ground suffering from a gunshot wound. >> we do have one female victim who has been shot. she is an in unknown condition at fairfax hospital. don't know her name or identity at this point. >> police say a man they're calling a person of interest is believed to be holed up inside a nearby home in the 76. police have surrounded the house

in an attempt to make contact with the man. so far they have not been able to get him to come out. >> our negotiators are trying to get in touch with that person to -- find out what the situation is. and to talk them into coming out to talk to us. we are -- basically talking to an answering machine. >> police are warning neighbors to stay inside their homes. many were concerned after seeing such a huge police presence on their typically quiet street. more and more police keep on going down the street. and i have lived here 12 years. this is the first time in 12 years i have seen anything. anywhere close to this. >> fairfax county police say they do plan to remain here on the scene as long as it takes to get a peaceful resolution to the situation. the original shooting remains under investigation. the circumstances, the motives, we don't know at this time. police are saying the victim did suffer life threatening

injuries. reporting live from falls church, virginia. darcy spencer, news 4. thank you, darcy. rescuers suspended their search. a 32-year-old man, disappeared this afternoon. he was trying to cross the river with a friend. authorities have not released the identity of the missing swimmer or friend who did make it out of the river. they will continue their search tomorrow morning. friends and colleagues gathered in logan circle to re amember popular d.c. council stwhr rofe downed in t dhe baltimore rbrorve ohe t weekend. police found desi deshea's body this morning. he apparently slipped off a dock at the harbor sunday night after boating with a group of friend. the boat's owner told news 4 that deshea had been drinking before he disappeared. deshea recently worked as press secretary forward 2 council member jack evans. >> he has done a terrific job representing me in the ward as communications director. just an upbeat rshepeonality.

that's wt w lle' remember him for. >> deshane was 30 years old. the ntsb admitted to congress today that signaling equipment on metro tracks continues to fail. in the area of last month's deadly crash. investigators told congress they keep replacing the different parts. but they haven't been able to figure out why the system cannot recognize a stopped train. general manager, john kato said metro will follow ntsb recommendations and put new systems in place to improve track safety. eleanor holmes norton lashed out at metro and ntsb wanted to know why the 1,000 series cars were often used in the front and back of the tins which are the most vulnerable positions. federal safety officials are taking closer look at the southwest jet that had a hole ripped into the fuselage. on board a plane traveling from nashville to baltimore yesterday. the plane lost cabin pressure, passengers had to use oxygen

masks. the plane diverted to west virginia. none of the 126 passengers on board was injured. southwest did inspect all of its boeing 737s overnight. before allowing them back in the air today. the slide at the pump has now lasted for three weeks. experts say summer prices have peaked. but all is not well on our area roadways. and we are joined with the story. jane? >> well, wendy, triple a says the reaction to the spike in gas prices in may and june has resulted in a 3% drop in driving in the dc metro area alone the it is having a huge impact on summer travel. >> he fills up the gas tank. with dreams of an upcoming vacation in his head. >> we planned on going to -- >> may be the exception rather than the rule.

sharks are common in the waters off long island. they're not thought to be dangerous but they are big. d.c. government formally launched an investigation into contracts granted by council members today. marion barry won't be the only target. the council approved a resolution that was meant to look into councilman barry's actions. last week a city contract awarded to barry's then girlfriend came to light during their highly publicized dispute. resolution approved today lets attorney bob bennett look into contracting done by all 13 council members. if the investigation takes him there. the judge presiding over the trial of a mother accused of killing her four daughters heard a lengthy bizarre interview today. prosecutors want to submit an eight-hour-long recording of police interrogating benita jax as evidence. jax told authority her daughters were possessed by demons. the judge wi hear the rest of the tape tomorrow. the four girls' badly decomposed bodies were discovered in jax

as was our temperature. sound like early september. indeed. this morning. 64 degrees. look at the morning low temperatures. elkins, west virginia. 44 degrees. heat may have been on out there. and buffalo is 50. parkersburg, west virginia, 50 degrees. records in rochester. 48 degrees. we made it up into the mid 80s. a lot of 80s. but, here we are in the hottest time of summertime. only -- a few spots around 100. they would love to be seeing some of the dry air. it is not going to rain around washington. indeed, right now on doppler, there is nothing going on. the only spot getting scattered showers.
