thing changed here since early this morning, and that is the person at the center of the standoff is now talking to police. apparently has been talking to police and investigators here on the scene for several hours. negotiations are under way at this point. but he is still holed up inside this home. now, police want to talk to him in connection to a shooting that happened in this neighborhood at around 6:30 last night. streets are closed off in the area. we have quite a police presence here. police were here throughout the night and continue to negotiate this morning. a pretty disturbing situation for folks that live here. and police are trying to emphasize to people that live in the neighborhood that this is not a random situation. they say the plan who is holed up in the home has a relationship with the woman that was shot in this neighborhood last night, and knows the people who are in the house with him. >> reporter: 14 hours into the standsoff a new batch of s.w.a.t. team officers and

officers arrived to stay on the scene. and the normally quiet community became a crime scene last night when shots rang out a fisher drive pap 36-year-old woman was wounded, and witnesses say a man ran from the scene and into a houson lyle avenue. and as the standoff began, police learned there were other people inside the house. the house was surrounded and streets were closed off. >> i walked down the street and down at the bottom of the hill was red lights and everything. it just started from there. >> this is a quiet suburban neighborhood. i am sure it can happen anywhere. it's surprising to happen three or four houses down from where i live. >> residents had to be escorted across police lines, a disturbing way to start the day. but police emphasize this is not a random event. >> it would be comforting for

the public to know this is not a random act. they did not go in a strange house, and just barge in. this was a house known to the individuals involved as was the shooting that occurred last night. the individuals are known to each other. none of this appears to be random at this time. we are continuing to proceed methodically so we can bring this to a safe solution. >> reporter: police will not say how many people are side the home with this man, nor will they comment on the relationship between the suspect and the people. they say there is a relationship between the man they are trying to talk to and the victim in the shooting, but they will not go on to characterize thatry relationship. in terms of an update on the woman that was shot, she was

seriously injured. >> megan mcgrath, thanks. we are now hearing the 911 call that was made by a friend of a family held hostage in their home on friday. >> he called and talked to me in a low voice and said there is a male with a gun in his house. i texted him and hung up on me -- he hung up, and i said do you want me to call the cops, i texted him, and he said i am scared. >> after leaving that home, the man held an elderly couple hostage. the gunman stormed into the two homes after robbing a nearby pawnshop. the woman was released on friday night, and her husband was found inside the home after the gun must not surrendered without incidents. crews are continuing to search for a missing swim inner in the potomac river.

a 32-year-old man disappeared yesterday afternoon while trying to swim across the river with a friend. authorities have not released the identities of the missing swimmer or his frid that made it out of the river. the search is on for a an nhiruved- drit-r dho w h ait man and left the injured. that's in the capital heights area of the pnce george's county. they found the man's body in the roadway. police have not released the man's identity or a description of the car that hit him. u.s. supreme court nominee, sonia sotomayor is back on capitol hill for more hours in front of the senate judiciary committee for a confirmation hearing. let's take a live look at the hearing going on. today sotomayor faced tough questions about her nomination, and her controversial comment about how a wise latino woman

>> yes, a few nights ago, anybody that was outside saw a bright fireball. it just so happened the security camera, in york, pennsylvania, caught it. it lit up the sky and looked like a daylight sky e.therth an incredible sight there in the skies. it went from pitch dark to completely bright as the fireball zoomed over southern pennsylvania there, right over york, pennsylvania. the security camera there at the york water works caught that amazing fireball in the sky there last week. let's take a look at our sky this morning. and this is how it has been behaving over the last couple hours. we can squeeze two hours down to 30 seconds. you can see the clouds coming through, and the cloud shadows passing over northwest washington. and there is the national cathedral in the left hand corner of the screen. we had the high clouds drifting in. and those clouds pretty much dissipated. we have lots of sunshine showing through. and then the view from our city

bz an incredible scene in the sky. the plane was en route to bwi when a hole suddenly ripped open in the ceiling. investigators have not figured out why it happened, but they say previous inspections found 11 cracks in the plane, cracks that were supposed to be repaired. tom costello reports. >> reporter: the hole in the top of the 737-300 is 17 inches by 17 inches. after intense work to make sure planes don't open newspaper flight, what happened? >> we will look for kau rowtion and cracks and going to be looking for scoring or scribe lines. we will look at the maintenance records. manufacturing records. >> we do know the plane involved is 15 years old. on monday, flight 2294 flew from nashville to baltimore, and the cabin lost pressure as the skin of the plane peeled back in front of the tail. they started to feel the effects

>> thank you, steve. the latest out of florida. seven men have been arrested in the murder of a couple known for adopting children with special needs. byrd and melanie billings were murdered. the crime was captured on surveillance camera. the couple used to keep track of their children. and the entire attack took less an ten minutes. we have information that indicates that there was an amount of practice that was involved. there are a couple individuals that have prior military back grounds in this group. >> the suspects range in age from 16 to 56. one is in the air force special operations. the group practiced for a month, and the robbery appears to be the primary motive behind the crime. and new developments this morning in the death of michael jackson. there are new reports they may
