'm wdy >>rieger. st i gsll aoingnowll n at c n aetrend new jersey avenue northwest. pern swa neth oat shot near that ecin atersontin has been taken to the onhospita. tlipaoloi c jnsns us nnow o j t phone with the latest on this. pat? >> reporter: at the intersection of new jersey and c streets northwest, where i see an entire intersection closed off. there are scores of cops here. a lot of capitol police officers here. i'm told that earlier this afternoon, a suspect was shot -- told it had something to do with a hit-and-run investigation. and that the suspect was involved in that hit-and-run investigation. and that he was shot somehow by a law enforcement officer near the intersection of new jersey and c streets. i know that medical personnel were called to the scene. they were -- administering cpr and there was an effort to take

him off to the hospital. the meantime this intersection at new jersey and c streets, louisiana avenue and c street, is full of cops and police say as they try to investigate what happened here. this is really close -- adjacent to the russell senate office building. constitution avenue. cuts through capitol hill. all closed off as police try to get information and evidence. again, in the shooting. the shooting of a suspect involved in some sort of hit-and-run investigation. we are told that perhaps a law enforce many officer might be involved somehow in the shooting and in the investigation. but we are really in the preliminary stages of learning what happened here. there is a traffic nightmare a well as a major investigation going on here on the senate side of capitol hill. likely to that ar,

>> reporter: i asked police at what point will you go ahead and storm the house and call it quits and ends the stand-off? they are saying that point will not come. they will see this throughout the end. and let it play itself out. little has changed this started at 6:30 p.m. yesterday. except for the fact they are now communicating with someone inside of the home although they won't say who. in the meantime, this neighborhood has been turned upside down. >> spent last evening in a hotel. we were told to park outside the neighborhood and drive down and pick up a few things. >> reporter: 24 hours later, neighbors are making other plans and there are more police shift changes at this falls church neighborhood as it remains the center of a police stand-off. >> we have invaded this community over 20 hours. it has been -- pretty tough work for all of the negotiators and people involved. we have not reached a successful

conclusion yet. our mission, of course, is to -- to get everyone out of that house alive. >> reporter: it began last night around 6:30 p.m. when police say a 36-year-old woman was shot on fisher drive. reported seeing a man run from the scene and into a nearby home and in the 7600 block of lyle avenue. that led to a stand-off. that lasted nearly a day. and numbers of fairfax county and state police are onhe scene along with s.w.a.t., armored vehicles and robots. streets have been closed throughout the ordeal. >> basically they told us last night at about 7:00, you ow, just that -- you know, we are not letting anybody out right now. we are trying to resolve this. and that if you did get out you would not be able to come back in until it was resolved. >> it has been a labor intensive event for us but i am hopeful that we will have a is a satisfactory conclusion and turn this lovely community back to its residents with our deepest and most sincere appreciation for its use.

>> reporter: police had some communication with someone inside of the home. they won't say with whom. >> spend a lot of time developing a relationship with the person that they are talking to. it does not happen in five minutes. sometimes it takes five hours. that's why it has been taking so long. >> reporter: the stand-off is continuing. at this point police are not confirming the ages nor the number of people who are inside of the home. they say that the safety of those inside and the residents 'round the home are top priority. >> what we want is to save everybody that is involved in this. >> reporter: police say that they are purposefully being vague in the situation and not giving us the ages of people inside of the home. they are not telling us how many people are inside the home nor are they revealing the names of anyone volved. including the woman who was shot yesterday. they still have no updated her condition. they are saying that they are doing that on purpose. they are calling this a delicate situation. tracee wilkins, live in falls

church. a deadly crash involving an iranian passenger plane this morning. 168 people were killed when that plane crashed just 15 minutes after it took off from the capital of tehran. witnesses say that the tail was on fire and just before the crash, it is the worst air disaster in iran in six years. stephanie gosk has our report. >> reporter: iranian aviation spokesperson said nothing appeared wrong with the flight 7908 when it took off from the tehran international airport, 16 minutes later the russian-made plane went down in the iranian countryside. >> aircraft fell out of the sky. exploded on impact. >> reporter: 153 pass sxwrerns 15 crew members all died. videote at the scene shows the aftermath of a violent crash. the plane hit so hard only small pieces of the wreckage smouldered in that it left behind. the flight was its way to armenia carrying mostly

atari worked with people that couldn't afford the homes. she promised to fix their credit ea and investigators say atari falsified the financial data in order to qualify for mortgages and sometimes even temporarily depossible itting her own funds into their bank accounts to inflate them. eventually collecting closing fees and commissions, the indictment alleges she madeore than monliil on the scheme. s,clntie on the other hand, ended up in bankruptcy. >> lot of the people who bought homes from her literally didn't have the ability or money to pay. sad part about it is their credit is ruined and they are bruptd and foreclosu-- bankrupt foreclosed. >> invesgators say while home buyers lost everything, the lenders were hard hit, too. estimated they suffered $50 million in losses on the fraudulent mortgages. a loudoun county sheriff's department worked with the

virginia attorney general's office to develop the case. supreme court nominee sonia sotomayor was back for another day of questioning on capitol hill today. this despite being pressed hard on the issue. sotomayor refused to reveal her personal views on abortion rights. steve handelsman has the latest. >> it is good to see you back. >> reporter: as the senate hearing turned to the explosive issue of abortion, sonia sotomayor would not reveal her view. but told senators it is clear what the law is now. >> that a woman has a constitutional right to terminate her pregnancy in certain circumstances. >> reporter: did president obama make sure sotomayor's pro-abortion rights before he nominated her to the supreme court? the white house says no. >> absolutely correct. i was asked no questions by anyone, including the president, about my views on any specific legal issues. >> reporter: oklahoma republican

police force talking about what happened. that was kimberly snider, member of the capitol police. briefing reporters on the scene in terms of what happened today. sorry we could not hear when she said. pat collins told us earlier a man was shot. apparently by a law enforcement officer. we do not know with what law enforcement agency that officer served. nor do we know whether the person who was shot was with wounded or killed or what. but somebody was shot down there on capitol hill today. not far from the senate side of the capitol building. we were told earlier that the senate side of the capitol is on lockdown. pat collins is on the scene now. pat? >> reporter: let me set the scene for you, if i may. this is louisiana straight across. as you look in that intersection across the street where all the police cars are, that's new

jersey avenue. as it cuts across towards the senate side of capitol hill, towards the senate rusll building. and then over there, jfk park. at 5:21, an incident down here involving an acura car. we are told it may have been some sort of a hit-and-run incident. and that the car came down louisiana avenue and then somehow cut over here on new jersey and was -- an attempt by police to stop that car. after that happened, a witness told me he heard about eight shots. eight shots and he saw a suspect then lying on the ground on new jersey avenue. and medics came to the scene and began administering cpr. they put the suspect on the gurney and into an ambulance and continued to do medical administrative work on the man. and then they took him out to the hop for further treatment. i'm told he may have been taken to a trauma center nearby.

in the meantime, u.s. capitol police have converge order the area and they have closed off this intersection up here between louisiana and new jersey and c street and as they continued to search for evidence and information about this what i'm told is a police involved shooting of a suspect here on capitol hill. in the meantime, a portion of constitution avenue as it cuts through the hill, that was closed off as well. we continue to await more information on the capitol police. so far we know a man, suspect, has been shot here. we believe that it is a police involved shooting. it had something to do with a hit-and-run. and an acura car that's stopped over there on new jersey avenue. when i get more, i will bring it to you. >> pat, it is wendy. i'm curious, not we know if the guy started -- if the injured man, suspect, let's just call him that, started shooting first? do we know if there w gun play going back and forth at any

point? >> reporter: i don't know that at all. i don't know. i just know i talked to a witness who heard a shot here and when he looked over, he saw the machine on the ground and then saw people administering cpr to him. that witness said that the suspect or the victim was then put on a gurney and continued to administer to him and put him in an ambulance and take him off to a trauma center. i don't know what caused this, whether it was an exchange of gunfire, or what actually led to the shooting. >> already. pat collins, capitol hill. we are continuing to follow this and we will be checking back with you shortly. thanks, pat. authorities in montgomery county suspended their search for missing swimmer in the potomac river. police identified the swimmer as 32-year-old maurice grenada. he was fishing with friends yesterday in potomac. the friends told police that he decided to swim across the river with another friend. the friend made it t g receive nado disappeared. the search began at 5:00 last

night. it was suspended at noon today. in florida, police say that there may be another accomplice in the murder of a prominent couple there. the investigators charged seven men in connection with the murder of mel my and byrd .sll gilser who selit and durginki aom a he hnvasnio last thursday. the crime was captured by sophisticated is your veil an system the couple installed to keep track of their 13 adopted children. police say that they believe somebody was supposed to disable that surveillance system before the break-in. but the unidentified accomplice didn't show up. they also want to speak again to a real estateagent, pamela laverne long. she nvestigators say that rented a property to one of the murder suspts. theyay sayhey questioned long two days ago but tnhe s sappeared and toced batayody police and found her in orange beach, alabama. still ahead, the fbi involved in a hunt norah pair of robbers wearing wigs who are suspected in a violent crime.

after that really wet period that we had. since then we have been on a bit of a dry period. folks have to water some of their happy flowers. our temperature outside, high temperature today, trying to get to 90. our average is 88 degrees. next week is middle of the summer, hottest time here in washington. 89. average high since june 21 when that pattern changed, about a half inch of rain. way below average. right now outside we got hazy sky for a change. sparkly blue sky. current temperature in washington is now 86 degrees. the dew point temperature is on the way up. 62. humidity is in the 40 range. but it feels now the heat index, 87 degrees. look at the morning low temperatures. one more cool morning. binghamton 51 degrees. dallas-ft. worth right now is 102. they have been suffering under real extreme heat. down into the dallas area. look at the dew points, though, mid part of the country.

now increased by 20 degrees. and that's how much in a way humidity increased in just 24 hours. get you an idea as theigh pressure is moving off are our winds are turning into the southwest. that's the reason for the increased humidity. few showers to the west. i'm afraid there won't be much of anything. the good news is with the launch of the shuttle, they made it in, there's coco, cape canaveral. showers to the north and showers to the south. at least around cape canaveral finally the skies were fine enough they could get into space. some scattered showers through parts of alabama and this is a batch that moved through lexington, kentucky. you can see how it sort of is drying up as it is heading into southwestern virginia. meanwhile, out into missouri, there has been a line of really nasty storms. moving through the boon hill of missouri now. around us, really nothing going on. look at kansas city. earlier today, winds gusted to 50 miles an hour. almost two inches of rain.

and ocean city, another wonderful, wonderful vacation week with the temperature into the mid 80s. alexandria, also almost 90 degrees. we will be seeing -- i think the temperature tomorrow, close to 90 degrees as we get into the humidity. there are the clouds tomorrow morning, slight chance of a passing sprinkle or shower, moisture coming our way. i think in the afternoon, again, a chance for an afternoon thundershower. does look like as we get into friday we will have a better risk or chance of showers, thundershowers. but then we will be seeing this pattern change once aga that will be bringing that back rather cool air for the weekend. not tomorrow, though. not this evening. humidity back. temperatures, 80 to 85 degrees. not the stifling humidity. it does feel like july, after all. overnight tonight, partly cloudy skies. some of those leftover sprinkles or showers possible by tomorrow morning. it is only a slight chance that even at that it would be a widely scattered and light.

back to our breaking news. shooting on capitol hill after a short police chase that ended on new jersey avenue and c streets northwest. authorities say the man involved in this incident was killed in that shooting. let's go to pat collins live. >> reporter: it began as a routine traffic stop. at first ask massachusetts avenue northeast. over there. they say that the suspect in the car blew right past that traffic stop into columbus circle where he struck a police officer who was standing outside his squad car and continued on down to louisiana avenue going the wrong way. and then up around new jersey avenue where police finally got him to come to a stop. they said as they approached the car, the man had a gun. the police ordered that man to put down the gun but when he didn't, they opened fire and shot him. here now from kimberly snider with the u.s. capitol police.

>> immediately began to flee the officer, massachusetts avenue northeast. struck one officer. >> reporter: we also heard -- >> we lost pat's audio. he is reporting from down near capitol hill where a man has been shot by a police officer. and we have now learned that that man has been killed. we will get more from pat as soon as the problems are corrected. the sheriff's office in leesburg, virginia, released the 911 tapes of the hostage stand-off there on friday. one of those calls was from an elderly woman who was held captive with her house fwhand their house for eight hours. she was locked in her bathroom when she made the call.

>> is he still in the residence? he is still in the residence. >> william spence, was arrested after the eight-hour standoff. investigators say he held up a pawn shop and broke into another couple's house before he took bob and frances belote hostage. spencer surrendered. chris gordon spoke with the belotes in their home in leesburg. >> reporter: the belotes are emotionally exhausted from their ordeal. i played the tape of the emergency call to the couple who heard it for the very first time. i asked frances how she remained so calm during the call knowing that her captor was still in her

house. >> i was at peace even though i knew what i had to do. because god was there. he was going to take care of me one way or the other. i was going to be in heaven shortly or i was going to be free later. >> reporter: the couple was in mre bath room. s.belote were locked the door. the us is sect said in time he would let one of the hostages go good i said, frances, go. she was going to go and say let me go. i said you are crazy. >> i did. i said -- i wouldn't go without you. >> reporter: the quiet leesburg cul-de-sac was filled with heavily armed police s.team inside the house, the suspect, william spencer, talked with mr. belote and let his guard down. >> at one time he laid that pistol down between us. and i said, bob, don't be stupid and try to grab that. but i was just as close to it as he was. >> reporter: the suspect surrendered to police. the belotes say if he is returned to prison they hope

this time he finds spiritual guidance there. >> i ask jesus. he was young. he messed up big time. he didn't think he was there for him my more. i said that's where you are wrong. he is there now. >> reporter: chris gordon, news4. today the state of maryland rested its case against a teenage girl who is charged with soliciting her father's murder. the murder happened on halloween in hagstown last year. 47-year-old billy lee black was in an alley behind his house when stabbed. prosecutors say black's 16-year-old daughter, danielle, asked a friend to kill her father. today on the witness stand the friend said that danielle black asked him to, quote, take care of her father. not kill him. the defense argues black just wanted her father roughed up, not murdered.

georgia avenue is one of the district's major thoroughfares. it runs almost from downtown up to silver spring. the popular and busy corridor has lacked economic development for years. that's starting to change. city leaders were on hand for a ribbon cut thing afternoon at park place. $71 million housing and retail development at the georgia avenue and petworth metro station. ward 4 council member becauser says residents in her area had to live with too many run-down businesses for too long. >> reporter: residents say they want to stop leaving d.c. to go to the cleaners, to go great restaurants. they want to do it in their own neighborhood. this is the start. >> reporter: mayor fenty phrased the new development as long overdue for georgia avenue. the project was first approved three years ago when fenty represented the area when he was on the d.c. council. >

and would be able to bypass all the congestion at the intersection. dedicated bus lanes would be added or appropriated for the system and including three lanes on k street. seeking $300 million in federal aid and to put the plan into place. aaa is speaking out on be half of the legions of motorists that need a break when they take i-95 to virginia. aaa mid atlantic is asking governor tim kaine to rethink a decision to close 19 rest stops in virginia. the group cited concern highway safety could be compromised by drivers who were fatigued or trying to get to their destinations without leaving the highway. transportation officials say that their budget shortfall is more than $2 billion and clothing the rest areas. $saving $9 million a year. news conference under way now on capitol hill where a man was shot earlier. let's listen in. >> i will answer the questions i can for you without jeopardizing the ongoing investigation. we have a good working cooperative relationship with the metropolitan police

department. to give you background at about 5:15 this evening the capitol police initiate ad routine traffic stop a vehicle. the vehicle immediately began to take off from the officers and headed towards - columbus circle and tap the vehicle struck one of our police officers. the capital police officers sustained very minor injuries and not life threatening injuries. and the officer was actually outside of the vehicle. the officer was on foot. at that point after they struck the officer, the vehicle was preceded down louisiana avenue. my understand sing the wrong way. the vehicle, which is a mercedes-benz, small sedan, stopped to rest in the area of new jersey and c street in northwest. at that point the officer noticed the suspect had a went sxon suspect produce ad weapon and officer challenged the suspect and asked him to show him his hands and put the weapon down. the suspect did not comply and was shot.

we since learned the suspect is dead. and we have retrieved aweapon. the suspect's with only. i will take any questions have you at this time. we believe there is only one weapon at this time. the officers felt there was a reason they were being threatened. they were in fear for their life. the officers did shoot at the suspect. >> did he fire? >> reporter: the weapon was a gun. >> did he pyre? >> reporter: i don't have those details at this point. >> what kind of gun was it? >> it was a handgun. i don't have the details or type of weapon it was. >> it was a routine traffic stop. probably for good-bye reason. suspect took off immediately. opensers were not able to catch up to the vehicle because he immediately took off. heading down the wrong way, striking one officer at columbus circle, and as he went down louisiana avenue the wrong way,

ended up at new jersey avenue, my understand sing that also a capitol police officer on a motorcycle was also injured. my understand sing that officer also sustained minor injuries and the suspect was the only person transported to the hospital. our officers are still on the scene. my understanding is two officers injured. i will have to check the details and get back to you on that. the initial stop that was initiated by the capitol police, capitol police officer, from what i understand. i don't have the details. i don't have the details on the number of officers involved in the shooting. i can tell you that i do know for sure that two of our officers were sustained minor injuries and i don't know how many officers were involved.

being taken out of the house. she was in handcuffs but police officers tell us that that's not unusual. that sometimes that's done for police safety. this all began yesterday. 6:30 p.m. in the evening. a 36-year-old woman was shot on fisher drive in falls church. witnesses reported seeing a man run from that scene and into a home in the 7600 of lyle avenue. that led to a stand-off that has been going on for the last 24 hours and then at 6:30, police brought that woman out of the house andhe child is safe as well. the man that police had held up inside of that house is dead. exactly what happened we don't know yet. >> we will have details on that coming up at 11:00. new we have sports. normally the day after the all-star game is one of the worst days in sports in the whole calendar year because nothing is going on. >> nobody wanted to see manny acta go but it gives us something to talk about with the new guy that happens to be a local. and he is saying all the right

things. jim riggleman era officially under way at nationals park for the second year in a row. riggleman takes over a team as an interim manager. last season it was in seattle and this year he's in his hometown. rockville native in frostburg state grad. nows that not so easy job of trying to bring the nationals back from the dead. ggleman takes over a team that's by far the worst in the mamgors. the new interim manager oversaw his first workout as the skipper today and still going on now. i riggleman's first chance to talk to the players since he replaced manny acta. riggleman was clear to say that there aren't many changes to be made because acta was doing all the right things. riggleman himself has been fired multiple times from n jeerial jobs and has high praise for the man he replaced. >> everything that we have tried to do to this point was all correct. you mo. in -- in theory, it is all correct. you know, the ideas -- i don't
