5:34 am
>> we got - i think it's either six-inch rapid steel. we have to find that before we do anything. we can uncover it, see it, dig away from it and keep uncovering it. i believe the leak is going to be on top of it or under it. i don't know how deep the gas main is right now. >> reporter: so, again, we have one lane in the westbound direction. we have two lanes going in the eastbound direction at the little river turnpike. we're here at pinecrest parkway. they're saying it will take them a little while first to locate the gas main. they have to shut down the water that's coming out of this pipe. and then they're going to have to actually get the water out of the hole and then begin the repair. this is going to drag on for a little while and definitely will affect the rush hour. right now doesn't look too bad, but then again it's early and volume is light. back to you. >> looks like a complicated, sensitive operation out there. thank you very much. a big warning for anyone who rides the red line. the big chunk of the red line metro will be closed for much of

good morning. welcome back. we are connecting you to the mayor this morning. i'm here with d.c. mayor adrian fenty. welcome. >> thanks for having me. >> good to have you with us. let's begin with a topic that is on the minds of a lot of commuters. is there any reason why the district is not enforcing parking restrictions during the evening hours on 14th street between the mall? over the past several months there have been anywhere between four to eight cars illegally parked during those restricted times. do you know what's going on and have you been cutting back on parking enforcement at all? that's what the viewer writes. >> yeah, no cutbacks on parking enforcement, for better or worse there. a lot -- i wonder if they mean the part of the mall that the park service -- >> i'm gathering this is 14th street where it splits at the
6:45 am
mall. >> yeah. >> is that your jurisdiction. >> it's actually federal government, park service south of constitution, and that is that part that you're talking about, is park service. but we can relay a message to the park service if people call us at 311, just like if you're calling with a local road. we'll get the park service ticketers and tow trucks out there and we certainly will relay this e-mail to them as well. >> okay. that's good. earlier this week you went to new york city to endorse michael bloomberg. >> yeah, yeah. >> now you've been criticized in the past, of course, for leaving town without telling people where you're going or why you're going. you announced this trip to new york. does this indicate a change in policy or something special about this trip? >> yeah, i really -- to be honest with you, until you said that, you didn't know whether we announced it or not. we have a policy of putting a public schedule together, but it's mainly public events. we haven't really had a practice of having, you know, private events in town or out of town on that public schedule. we probably won't. >> this was a public event? >> this was -- this was more of
6:46 am
a private event. >> okay. >> yeah. >> well, if it was on, then it was a mistake, i guess. if it was on the schedule orot the kind of thing you -- >> really, to be honest with you, i don't know the ins and outs of how the whole public schedule works. i know any of our press conferences, public meetings, walk-throughs, these type of things, those are all on the public schedule. private meetings in the office, those aren't on the schedule, or private meetings in someone else's oice when i'm out of town, those are not on the schedule either. but you got a leg up on me this morning. i have to go back and check. >> okay. well, another controversy involving former mayor and current council member marion barry made headlines this week. now the d.c. council is investigating contracts granted by all council members after it was revealed that barry gave a contract to his former girlfriend. his then girlfriend at the time. i guess let me ask you, did you have any of these personal service contracts when you were a council member? >> no, no, i actually did not. when -- the one thing i did when i was on the city council, i was chair of a special investigat n
6:47 am
investigation, and we hired a consultant and i think it went through a process where the committee voted on it, full council voted on it. >> what do you think about this idea of granting these contracts? should there be tougher restrictions? >> yes. yes, there should be. >> so you're not in favor of them. now, the former mayor said at one point this week that he didn't see anything wrong with granting a contract to his then girlfriend. do you have a problem with that, personal relationship, giving somebody a district contract? >> you know, i think that having served on the council, i think, you know, you have your employees who work under you. and then you do some contracting out. i think if it's done through a special committee, as i was talking about, you absolutely should run it through the whole council. whether or not you should do that for hiring a contractor or a consultant, i'm not sure yet, but i do know there probably needs to be a little bit more
6:48 am
review than is in place right now. but give the council a lot of credit. they're looking at it and i think they'll come up with tougher standards. >> mr. mayor, thank you very much. if you have a question for d.c. mayor adrien fenty, send us an e-mail to fenty@nbcwashington.com. thanks very much. >> thank you. >> eun? >> thank you, joe. thank you, mr. mayor. well, a loudoun -- a woman from loudoun county has been inn died on a $50 million mortgage fraud scheme but she's nowhere to be found. investigators say 42-year-old diane fredricka tar i took advantage of more than 100 home buyers in virginia. they say atari inflated her clients' income and fraudulently fixed their credit to get them homes they couldn't afford. >> they didn't have the ability or the money to pay. the sad part about it is their credit's ruined. they're bankrupt. they're foreclosed. and that's the way the scheme worked. >> the massive losses suffered by mortgage lenders will likely be passed on to all homeowners

in the form of increased insurance rates. investigators believe that atari has fled the country. futures are pointing to a negative opening this morning and the sears tower is getting a new name. cnbc's courtney reagan joins us live with all of today's business headlines. >> reporter: good morning, eun. futures were definitely trending lower but believe it or not we got some earnings reports we'll detail in just a minute here that have actually sent us a bit higher this morning. just moments ago, so that's some good, positive new news to share with your viewers. following, of course, what we saw yesterday, a nice, big rally. it was spurred by intel's strong earngs report. asian markets ended up higher overnight. that good sentiment spread overseas. europe a little bit lower in early trading, some gains. we will get data today on new filings for unemployment benefits as we do every thursday. business conditions in the mid-atlantic region and home builder sentiment. that's all to come later this morning. as i mentioned, jpmorgan did just report their quarterly earnings coming in at 28 cents 'er share.
