florida couple gunned down in their home. good thursday to you. i'm craig melvin in for jim handly. >> i'm pat lawson muse. topping our news this afternoon, the billings were killed a week ago today. eight people have now been charged and the physical evidence against them appears to be mounting. >> investigators say they have found the safe zwroenl from the couple's home, a vehicle used in the getaway, several guns, including one that could be the murder weapon. >> reporter: the arrest overnightle love real estate agent pamela long wiggins and finding the safe that was stolen from the billings' home led authorities to say this thursday. >> we believe that this concludes the major part of our investigation. >> reporter: other evidence includes an suv impounded overnight believed to be the same one seen in the video of the home invasion murder a week ago. and maybe the murder weapon. >> we have located several guns

in various locations. one of which we believe is the murder weapon. we believe. it has not been processed yet. >> did you know the bill wrgs going to die? >> reporter: pamela wigens has been charged with accessory after the fact. the eighth person charged in the murders of the billings, a couple with 17 children, and most of them adopted, many with special needs. the other seven to include the one wigens was landlord to are behind bars charged with murder. the sheriff reiterated again robbery was the motive. and that other info will come out at trials. >> it is what it is. we will follow any legitimate investigative lead until it is concluded because we have the legal and ethical requirement to do that. >> reporter: this while funeral services for the billings will be held friday. >> the mother of the woman accused of killing her four children took the stand in d.c.

superior court today. banita jacks started toxri rub her eyes when prosecutors questioned her. a departmentsy u.s. marshal testified today. marshals found the decomposing bodies of jacks' four girls while serving an eviction notice at her southeast washington home last january. in the first day of the trial, judge frederick weisberg decided to allow a videotape of jacks police interrogation to be used as evidence. jack jacks said her daughters were possessed by demons. police have released the identity of the man they say opened fire on police. just blocks from the capitol yesterday. 27-year-old kellen anthony white, brandywine, maryland, shot to death after a traffic stop went bad. it started just after 5:00 yesterday afternoon near union staying. police say white refused to pull over and then nearly ran over two officers before crashing into a capitol police cruiser and opening fire on the

officers. today house speaker pelosi and minority leader john boehner commended the officers for their bravery. the takoma metro rail station on the red line was closed several hours today. authorities continue looking at what caused last month's fatal crash. the station was closed between ten o'clock this morning and 3:00 this afternoon. during that time, investigators performed more tests on the stretch between the fort totten and silver spring stations. that's when the crash happened. shuttle buses took riders to other stops. >> this is ridiculous. happened between fort totten and takoma. >> understand why they would have to in order to investigate the accident properly but it is a big inconvenience to the commuters and the users of the system. >> i'm glad that they are closing it down so it won't happen again. the fact they are putting this much time into it, i appreciate it. >> metro says the takoma station will be closed again saturday between 7:00 in the morning

until 7:00 at night and will do that so they can perform more tests. a water main break caused a traffic mess in fairfax county today. the 12-inch main broke overnight in annandale. as you can see, gushing water flooded parts of little river turnpike between cornwall drive and pinecrest parkway. that caused backups. do dozen customers lost water service as well. a spokesperson with the fairfax water authority says the broken pipe has been fixed and water service has been restored. another big lane shifts near the wilson bridge. >> if you are interested, you can put in your bid to buy the water gate hotel. >> here are four other stories making headlines in the washington area today. prince george's county police are investigating the death of a man found in capitol heights. police found the victim's body early this morning. a resident told police she heard gunshots and then a man lying on the ground. a mother is fighting for her

life following a shooting that triggered a 24-hour stand-off with police. it started tuesday when a man shot the mother of his 8-year-old son in an apparent argument. police say he then took the by and another woman hostage. inside a home on fisher drive in falls church. police got them out safely but the 36-year-old woman he is accused of shooting remains in critical condition. police say that the suspect took his own life. the wilson bridge project will create major shift in traffic starting today. the right lane of the beltway's outer loop will be diverted to the right and traffic will use the eisenhower connector ramps as the third outer loop travel lane. this configuration will remain rough september. until then, drivers won't able to turn on to the connector or stop on those ramps. one of washington's most famous landmarks goes on the auction block next tuesday. the watergate hotel will be auctioned off.

five years after a developer bought it with hopes that restoring it to its glory days. the current watergate owner was given a foreclosure notice last month. the "endeavour" astronauts have begun inspecting their ship for signs of damage from last night's liftoff. they are using a 100-foot laser to look at the shuttle's exteri exterior. eight or nine pieces of foam insulation came off the external tank. the crew will inspect "endeavour" again tomorrow and when they arrive at the international space station. the shuttle will remain at the space station for t weeks. there are five planned space walks. hey, it is starting to feel like summer in the d.c. area. chuck bell has the fast forecast from storm center 4. chuck, humidity showed up today, man. >> yeah. no kidding. we all noticed it first thing on your way out to get your day started. walked out the door, it was 73 degrees. warmest morning start since the middle of september last year. there's only literally one

we will give thank you details plus beach and boating coming up later. let's go back to the stio. >> thank you, chuck. gunfight left five police officers wounded in jersey city today. this afternoon two of the officers are fighting for their lives. it all started around 5:00 this morning after police spott a vehicle that was connected to an armed robbery. when police approached the suspect they fired on the officers. one suffered a shotgun blast to the face and the other was hit in the neck. they are both in critical condition. the other three officers were treated and released. the two suspects were killed. police have not yet released their identity. a california man and his wife got into an argument on a cruise ship. she's dead. he's the suspect. the fbi is not releasing the man's name but say they are questioning a man in his 50s and have not arrested him yet. carnival cruise lines say the man and his wife good got into a dispute in their cabin tuesday evening. they say they put the man in the big aboard the ship.

supreme court nominee sonia sotomayor has finished answering questions before the u.s. senate. today lawmakers also heard from witnesses including two firefighters at the center of one of e judges most disputed rulings. steve handelsman reports. >> reporter: new haven, connecticut, firefighters, frank richie, and ben vargas were denied promotions and testified today to the senate judiciary committee. federal appeals judge sonia sotomayor failed to protect their rights by throwing out their case. they sued the city of new haven for disregarding the promotion exams they passed and after no black firefighters passed them. we saw basic fairness and even-handed enforcement of the laws. >> i expected lady justice with the blindfold on. >> reporter: this year the u.s. supreme court overruled sotomayor in the new haven case but this week, in her effort to win a promotion to the high court, sotomayor's been making the case that in 17 years on the

could come next week. the senate floor vote, confirmation vote that counts, could come before the august recess. steve handelsman, news4, capitol hill. >> judge sotomayor's confirmation hearings are generating a lot of buzz on our homepage, nbcwashington.com. one viewer writing in to say sotomayor knows her job and she knows the law. and goes by the book. another viewer says she goes around and around in circles saying the same words over and over with no substance similar to a typical politician. another person writing the job of a judge is to shun personal biases and experiences and to see the important facts on which the case depends. sotomayor does not shun her personal biases, she embraces them. another person says she's bright, educated and from what she's said during the hearings, she obviously knows how to handle reactionary.

she admitted her statement was mott something she would have said but as a woman i understand the frustration with the good old boy network. for the last ten years, a georgia man has relied on his wife to help him with simple every day tasks. he's hoping his historic surgery will change that. on may 4th, jeff kepner underwent a double hand transplant. the doctors spent nine hours attaching bones, tendons, nerves and veins to the new hand. the hope now is that the nerves in his hands continue to grow. >> we expect he will have movement in his hands to be able to do grip and grasp. >> he says he looks forward to holding his wife and teenage daughter's hands. he wants to take a shower without help. doctors say he is recovering well but will be in pittsburgh for some time while undergoing therapy. we all know that obesity can cause heart trouble. now a new study shows that it

can also be hard on your knees. researchers at boston university looked at more than 300 older adults. they found a higher body mass index was associated with rapid loss of cartilage in the knees and they say losing weight may be the best with you to slow the progression of the condition known as knee osteo-arthritis. one othe favorite foods in our region, crabmeat. eating a whole one can be intimidating. where do you start? the owner of a popular crab market in virginia shows us how. >> i'm here to show you how to eat a crab. there are a coupl of different variations. a couple of things still stay the same. first, got to grab your crabs. turn it over and grab the key, pull it out. turn it back over. and use it as leverage to pop it open. put the shell off to the side.

one quick snap. okay. this is where there's a couple different variations. i'm going to show you my personal preference. i like to just squeeze the body. that's just going to release some of the not so good stuff from the good stuff. and this portion is called the back, where most of the meat is. jumbo lump, this is where it is coming from. start pulling away. the white stuff is the meat. that's what you want to go after. nice, sweet white meat is what you want. there are a couple of different ways you can eat if you don't like it. i have your butter, vinegar, spice, and cocktail sauce. there's a little spicy. after eating all the meat in the back, you want to go ahead and go for the claw. at's where a lot of other good meat is, too. there are two portions that have all the meat in it. right here, the base. and actual claw part. we just snap in two. start working with your handy-dandy tools. then just start breaking away.

nasa released stored video of man's first trip to the moon. nasa showed some of the progress it maiden hancing the black and white video shot 40 years ago. among the footage were a before and after armstrong stepping on the moon on july 20th, 1969. the two people responsible for getting lye television from the moon to tv stations around the country were pt of today's press conference. the final version is expected to be released in september. pretty cool. >> it is pretty cool. we could, obviously, use rain in our area. >> rain. >> nothing like this. >> this is getting very serious across the lone star state of texas. this is lake travis which is the main water supply for much of the hill country of texas. you know it has been a long time if your sailboat is sitting on rocks and you are walking the great dane over the sandhills because there's no lake. in fact, looks like they have more water out of the lake than in the lake at this point in time. they had a drought going on for

nearly two years across that part of texas. so long horn fans and aggie fans alike not appreciating the extreme drought in the great state of texas. right here in the great district of columbia, under a mostly blue sky, and it is a scorcher of a summer day. our first 95-degree day of the summer. the wind out of the west at 20 miles per hour is mixing the air out and drying it out a bit. our low this morning was 73. when weet up this morning the dew point was 68 degrees. because of the heating and westerly wind our dew point is back down to the mid 50s. check out the national drought monitor and exceptional drought conditions now across all of south central and extreme southern texas. this is where lake travis is right about in here. spoke terrible drought conditions around there. for us, we are jus getting a little bit on the dry side. technically we had plenty of rain for the year. over the last 25 days, we only had about a half an inch of rain. so our chances for thunderstorms tomorrow will bring much needed and appreciated raindrops. 95 here.

welcome back to "news4 at 4:00." i'm pat lawson muse. >> i'm craig melvin. here are the stories we are working on now. investigators say they have found aafe stolen from a couples home during the deadly break-in last week. they have also found several guns. they believe at least one of those guns was used to kill melanie and byrd billings. eight people have now been charged in that case. the couple adopted more than a dozen children. many of them with special needs. sonia sot meyer completed three days of answering questions before the senate judiciary committee. a floor vote could come before the august recess. approval would make sotomayor the first hispanic justice on

the high court. takoma metro rail station was closed for several hours earlier today. investigators can perform more tests on the tracks. crews are still looking for clues into last month's deadly crash. shuttle buses carried passengers to the the other stops. the station will also be closed this saturday for more mosts between 7:00 in the morning and 7:00 in the evening. when mhael jackson's hair caught fire while filming a pepsi commercial back in the '80s that could have been the turning point in his life. some believe that it is possibly e main reason for his use of prescription drugs. the video of that incident has surfaced. ♪ >> reporter: it was michael jackson's nal take othe pepsi commercial that changed everything. ♪ pepsi >> reporter: the shoot had been going smoothly until take six. there was a flash on stage. pyrotechnic exploded too early and suddenly the king of pop was on fire in this never before

seen video you can see the flames shooting from his hair. >> on fire for about eight seconds before anybody steps in to put it out. he continues dancing, oblivious to the fact his hair is alight. >> reporter: jackson kept performing. he was still smoking as people rushed to help. >> when he suddenly realized there was a fire, he took his white glove and tried to put it out. people crowded around him. >> reporter: he looked shocked. who wouldn't be? if you slow the video down, you can see his scalp, the hair singed off. it was january 1984. michael jackson was at the height of his career. but this would become the watershed moment of his life. >> the fact the pepsi commercial went wrong is almost -- pinpoints really the beginning of the end when everything started to go wrong. this is when he first became

addicted to painkillers. he was prescribed demerol to get over the injury. >> reporter: "us weekly" magazine posted the video online. to this day the jackson family blames the pepsi incident for many of michael's problems. jermaine jackson talked about it at neverland. >> i heard things about the prescription drugs when he had the pepsi burn. >> reporter: 25 years later prescription drugs are at the center of his death investigation. the doctors turned over medical records, including his determ e dermatologist and murray who was with michael jackson at the time of his death. his spokesperson tells nbc news that he met with investigators twice. the final interview on june 27th, two days after jackson died. lasted three hours. they say he hasn't been served with subpoenas or search warrants. and that he turned over all the documents requested.

usc law professor jean rosenbloom says prosecutors have an opportunity send a message when the whole world is watching, you have a high-profile victim, you get more bang for your buck if you go after the people who are criminally responsible in a situation like that. >> investigators found several bottles of an anesthesia in jackson's home. a little michael jackson nostalgia. fans spending quite a bit of money. michael jackson is still number one on the album charts. his number one cd sold 349,000 copies in the last week, number one spot. 2.3 million copies of jackson's albums have been pulled since he died three weeks ago.

wall o wall street stocks managed to remain firm. closing bell there. the dow gained 95 points. nasdaq closed 22 points higher. and the new york stock exchange is up 49. the latest unemployment numbers from the labor department are looking better. the number of americans that signed up for unemployment benefits for the first time plunged last week to the lowest level since january. initial jobless claims dropped 47,000 to 522,000. and the number of people who continued to draw unemployment also went down. however, some analysts do say that despite those decline it is numbers remain high and unemployed americans are still having a hard time finding new jobs. proof of the tough economy could be seen at a d.c. job fair today. job hunters sit in lon lines at the convention center this morning. more than 80 businesses and agencies showed up to meet perspective sploes. eleanor holmes norton held the job fair. the response, huge.

the roof of a stage being built for a madonna concert collapsed today. one worker was killed. two workers are seriously injured. and four others suffered broken bones. in a statement madonna said she was devastated by the news. the cause of the roof collapse was not clear. the concert had been canceled. the list is out and we are quite proud to report that nbc's comedy "30 rock" has broken a
