.god eve jim and enredo are off tonight. the suspect was shot. triple shooting across the street from nasa-goddard space center. derek ward at the scene. derek? >> for the second time in as many days a shooting involving capitol police officers. this shooting involved another police officer from nother department who himself was off duty. a literal gunfight. when it was over. three people in all were wounded. among them a 12-year-old girl who had nothing to do with the gun play that took place in the apartment parking lot here in greenbelt. residents heard what they thought were firecrackers at first. one man quickly realized it was gunfire. >> probably, 15, 20 gunshots. two different sounding shots. >> shellasin littering the parking lot show there was some exchange of gunfire. started with an argument between an off duty fort meyer police officer and his roommate.

>> the offduty officer left the apartment in an attempt to call for assistance. at that point, the roommate was able to locate the officers offduty weapon and ran out into the parking lot and began firing the weapon. >> then an offduty capital police officer happened on the scene. >> at that point the offduty capitol police officer engaged the suspect in an exchange of gunfire. >> the suspect and capitol police officer were both hit. so was an innocent victim in her apartment nearby. >> # 12-year-old girl was also, it appears, was grazed -- by an errant round. all three are expected to survive. a serious blow to neighbor's sense of safety. >> they are here. occurred during broad day light. >> again both police officers involved were offduty out of

uniform. one service weapon was involved. the 12-year-old girl is suffering what is described as a graze wound. not too serious. however we understand that the roommates of the fort meyer police officer his wound are more serious. this is still under investigation. among the things they're trying to sort out now is which gunfire the round that struck the 12-year-old girl. we are live in greenbelt. back few you. >> derek ward. thank you. capitol police officer taken to prince george's hospital center. chris gordon spoke to the injured officer's sister. he continues tonight. chris? >> here, u.s. capitol police cruiser standing guard. the occupant inside. one of their own has been wounded. prince george's county medic 12 arrived at the hospital just before 8:00. followed closely by two county police cruisers. at the emergency entrance, the trauma team moved with a sense of urgency at this point they

didn't know the extent of the injuries. capitol police cruisers arrived followed by unmarked federal cars and family members. his sister identified him as u.s. capitol police ficer, eddie thornton jr. who was offduty and had gone to visit his mother who runs a day-care center for children at the apartment complex where the shooting occurred. >> they told us he is lucid, talking, we just arrived. it was a mess over at the gates of cipriano. we tried to hurry and find out what his condition is. his wife is here. we're all just trying to get in there see what his condition is. >> do they have children? >> no. they just got married, june 13th. >> if they waited for word on officer thornton's condition. got a call. and there was gunshots. he would be getting out of the car. i guess he got shot as well. >> hours later, word came from the trauma center.

landing in west virginia. ntsb investigators took the pictures. the hole is 17 inches by 14 inches. passengers reported hearing a loud boom and then the cabin depressurized. investigators say so far they haven't found sign of corrosion or pre-existing damage to the plane, which is 15 years old. two disney world buses collided in orlando today. sending 12 people to area homes with minor injuries. police say one bus slammed into the back of the other after the bus in front slowed to merge. the driver of the second bus is expected to be ticketed for reless driving. 50 people were on board. the accident happened less than two weeks after two disney world monorail trains collided killing a 21-year-old operator. for the first time, a mother on trial for murdering her four daughters showed some emotion today in the courtroom. benita jax's mother, took the stand as witness for the prosecution. she described her daughter as a good mother to the girls, but

after a week of new lead and videos surfacing it appears the case may be closed on the murder of a prominent florida couple. according to a police report, a local realtor arrested in the case, had the couple's stolen safe, hidden in h ckbayard. la mepa meggins charged with accessory after the murder of burt and melanie billings. the couple known forgdoinpt 13 special need children were shot to deathnin i their i nine bedr pensacola home last week. six men and a teenager are facing murder charges. police say they have most of the evidence they need in this case. >> we have located several guns in various location fe o o which we believe is the murder weapon. th believe thathis conclude aj meorart m of our

terrible, terrible drought has continued. high temperature in dallas is 103. austin, texas, set a record. 104 degrees. right now in the 90s. through texas. and you can see how that humidity now is all the way up in the new york city area. and boston has same humidity we have here in washington. and the heat index is into the 90s. in parts of the south. there is where the exceptional drought continues. austin, texas. last two years has a deficit now apoaching 30 inches of rainfall. so those are the areas. south texas could use rain. look at, not a cloud in sight. here is where the clouds are. where the storms are. there is a little weak weather front that has been coming through us. along that. there will be an area of low pressure. tomorrow afternoon. i think we have the risk of seeing some -- legitimate, severe thunderstorms. look at the line that moved through -- arkansas right now. heading through pine bluff, arkansas. in and around us.
