they become available. >> now to a developing story out of indonesia this morning. bombs exploded at two luxury hotels this morning in jakarta, killing nine people and wounding at least 50 others. the bombs exploded just two minutes apart at the j.w. marriott and the ritz-carlton hotels. two u.s. officials said one other american citizen are believed to -- and one other american citizen are believed to have been injured but that is unconfirmed at this time. antiterror forces were on the scene of both blasts but officials have not confirmed what, if any, terrorist group is responsible for the attacks. we'll bring you more information, though, as soon as we get it. now to the latest in a triple shooting involving an off-duty capitol police officer. this happened yesterday right across the street from the nasa goddard space center in greenbelt, maryland. the officer and a 12-year-old caught in the cross fire were both hit. >> news 4 michael flynn joins us live from the prince george's

county hospital center. >> reporter: three people were shot, including a 12-year-old girl and an off-duty capitol police officer. fortunately we're told that none of the injuries is life-threatening. the off-duty u.s. capitol police officer was rushed here just after 7:00 last night. his family identified him as eddie thornton jr. he was shot in the parking lot of an apartment complex right across the street from nasa in greenbelt. family members say he pulled into the parking lot to visit his mother, who runs a day care at the complex. police say he witnessed a man firing shots randomly in the parking lot. investigators say it was connected to the suspect arguing with his roommate at the complex, and that roommate is a military officer at ft. myer. the suspect had his roommate's military weapon when he began firing. officer thornton and the suspect exchanged gunfire. both were hit, and a 12-year-old girl in a nearby apartment was grazed by a stray bullet. police tell us none of the injuries is life-threatening. that's good news this morning. family members tell us last night that officer thornton was

cautious and talking so good news there. back to you, eun and joe. >> thanks very much. >> this is the second shooting involving a capitol police officer in just two days. on wednesday, officers were forced to kill a suspect just blocks from the capitol building. police have identified the victim as 27-year-old kellen anthony white of brandywine, maryland. police say he fled a traffic stop, hit two officers with his car and wouldn't drop his gun. he fired at the officers and was killed during the shootout. he has been arrested on weapons and drug charges in the past. his family told news 4 they can't believe he meant to hurt anyone. they say he had just become a father four weeks ago. >> you can expect more delays on the red line this weekend. the takoma metro station will close from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. tomorrow. this is part of the ongoing investigation into last month's deadly metro crash on the red line. investigators are running tests on the tracks between the takom and ft. totten stations. here's what you can expect when the takoma station is closed

tomorrow. trains will run between glenmont and silver spring, also between ft. totten and shady grove but there will be a shuttle bus service to help people get around the closure of the takoma station. >> happening today, the space shuttle "endeavour" will dock at the international space station, but nasa is dealing with a bit of a mystery as it tries to figure out why foam from the shuttle's fuel tank peeled off after liftoff. nasa says the shedding is minor and poses no danger to the shuttle. astronauts inspected the ship yesterday, their first full day in orbit, which was the 40th anniversary of the launch of the first moon landing. >> family, friends and fans of michael jackson will have to wait even longer for the results of his autopsy, according to the los angeles county coroner's office. that office had expected to wrap up the report late this week or early next week, but they now say the results are expected in two weeks, though they declined to explain why. the report will include what drugs were in jackson's system when he died, which will be a

are recovering after being shot outside a apartment complex in prince george's county. the victims include a capitol police officer who was off-duty at the time, another man and a 12-year-old girl. sonia sotomayor is speeding toward confirmation as the nation's first hispanic supreme court justice. she concluded three grueling day of questioning by the senate judiciary committee yesterday. the confirmation vote is expected later this month. shuttle "endeavour" will dock at the international space station today. nasa, meanwhile, has been trying to figure out why part of the shuttle's fuel tank lost so much foam during wednesday's liftoff. nasa managers are calling it a mystery but say they are not worried. a double edged sword on wall street this morning. the dow jones is up against partly due to a surge in confidence in banks and technology stocks. both jpmorgan and goldman sachs, two companies who benefited from the bailout, pulled in stellar profits last quarter. unfortunately, foreclosures are

still at an all-time high. some are calling for baskets to lend their new profits to stem the foreclosure. well, the big day today in biloxi, mississippi, as the national governors association holds its annual convention. the nations governors will meet to discuss strategies for budgets, infrastructure, education and energy as well as information about the federal stimulus funds and emergency management. the conference will have some notable absences, though. embattled south carolina governor mark sanford, recently resigned alaska governor sarah palin and arnold schwarzenegger of california have all said they will not attend. >> clothes may make the man or the woman, but politicians running for office cannot use campaign money to buy clothes. that's the verdict from the federal election commission. at the same time, the agency did cut four congressional house members and candidates some slack. the f.e.c. said the amount of money they spent was modest and

a family of four was traveling near atlanta when their van suddenly burst into flames. a police officer spotted trouble and jumped into action. video of the rescue was caught on this dash cam. two of the people inside got out safely, but a daughter and her disabled mother got stuck. the officer braved the flames and was able to drag both of them to safety. both were burned but are expected to be okay. >> another accident at disney world sent 12 people to the hospital with minor injuries. police say a disney world bus slammed into the back of another buafter the bus in front slowed to merge. the driver of the second bus is expected to be ticketed for careless driving. 50 people were on board the two buses together. the accident happened less than two weeks after two disney world monorail trains collided, killing a 21-year-old train operator. >> today we're getting a closer look at the hole that tore in a southwest airlines jet in mid-flight monday. the plane was bound for bwi thurgood marshall but had to

apartment who was grazed by a stray bullet. here's what officer thornton's sister told us when she got to the hospital last night. >> they told us that he's lucid, he's talking. we just arrived. it was a mess of -- at the gate. we just tried to hurry and get here as soon as we could so we could find out what his condition is. his wife is here and we're all just trying to get in there and see what his condition is. >> reporter: do they have children? >> no, they just got married june 13th. tomorrow's his birthday. >> reporter: police say none of the injuries is life-threatening. officer thornton, as i said yerler, last reported in stable condition. back to you. >> michael flynn reporting live. thanks very much. today a funeral will be held for byrd and melanie billings, the florida couple murdered inside their home last week. police are also releasing new details about the case. according to a police report, a local realtor arrested in the case had the couple's stolen safe hidden in her back yard.

pamela wiggins is charged with being an accessory after the murder of byrd and melanie billings. six men and a teenager also face murder charges. >> we have located several guns in various locations, one of which we believe is the murder weapon. we believe that this concludes the make or part of our investigation. >> the couple, known for adopting special needs children, were shot to death. 9 of the couple's 16 children were home during the break-in and three of them actually saw the intruders, but they were not injured. >> the trial of banita jacks, the mother accused of murdering her four daughters, continues today. yesterday for the first time jacks showed some real emotion. jacks' mother, mamie jacks, took the stand as a witness for the prosecution, described her daughter as a good mother. but said she had not seen banita or the girls since 2005. the four girls were found dead in january of 2008. banita jacks became emotional during her mother's testimony

and the judge called a recess so she could regain her composure. >> well, the recession has hit the district hard and the 2010 budget is proof of that. the 2010 fiscal year begins in october and the budget has already been revised twice because of slumping revenues. last september, the city slashed $130 million for its budget, followed by another $453 million in cuts in the last eight months. couple that with another 150 million in projected cuts and the total is $733 million in lost revenue over the last year. but some residents think the city is doing the best it can. >> pretty good job of managing this crisis. we've really had a month after month of revenues falling and growing challenges and keeping our budget balanced, while also preserving things like education and health care and for the most part those services have been preserved. >> but the district is also cutting 250 more government jobs in various sectors to reduce costs even further. >> the foggy bottom neighborhood will be getting some new

development. mayor adrien fenty plans to build a new fire station and library for the west end community at 24th and l streets northwest. the new project will house both the library pld the fir station in the same building. fenty says he hopes the project will help spur new economic development in that area. an early proposal to develop the project pell apart after community opposition. bids for new contracts will go out this fall. changes are coming to national harbor as well. the prince george's county planning board has approved a plan to build a convenience store, gas station and fast food straupt at the harbor. some objected to the idea, saying having a fast food place on the property will diminish the upscale nature of the place and detract from historic sites near the property. as a compromise, the store, gas station and fast food restaurant will be built away from ose historic sites. now 5:38. coming up, looking for a washington landmark, when the famous watergate hotel will go up on the auction block. >> forget about the sharks.

indonesia. officials say the blast at the j.w. marriott and the ritz-carlton were caused minutes apart and were caused by high explosives. about 50 others were injured. three people are recovering after being shot outside an apartment complex in prince george's county. the victims include a capitol police officer who was off duty at the time and a 12-year-old girl. it happened last night in greenbelt. all three victims are expected to be okay. >> sonia sotomayor is speeding toward confirmation as the nation's first hispanic supreme court justice. she concluded three days of questioning by the senate judiciary committee yesterday. a confirmation vote is expected later this month. joe? >> metro officials are still investigating the cause of last month's deadly metro train crash and that investigation could cause some weekend delays for red line riders due to a station closure. news 4's megan mcgrath joins us live from the takoma metro station to tell us more about the likely delays. good morning, megan. >> reporter: well, good morning, joe. people who take the line here at

the takoma station have been seeing a lot of delays lately and it's not over yet. the ntsb continues to conduct tests down on the tracks near the takoma station in the area where the collision occurred. they've been doing site distance tests and other tngs that require them to close down the takoma station so that their folks can safely do their work down there on the tracks. the station was closed at 10:00 a.m. yesterday for several hours. today things are normal so you're not going to have any problem coming in and out of the station going to work today. however, tomorrow is a different story. they're going to be closing down the takoma station for about a 12-hour period, beginning at 7:00 a.m. tomorrow. it will remain closed until 7:00 p.m. they're going to be running a shuttle bus service between ft. totten and the silver spring metro station itself to try to help move people around. earlier this week, the ntsb issued urgent recommendations to metro. called on metro to install a backup system to monitor train movement, to prevent collisions

like we saw last month. now, metro's gm at the time said that no such alert system exists in the marketplace, that they would actually have to invent such a system. metro has talked apparently to several vendors at this point, so they are going forward with plans to try and come up with such a system, have it installed here. it's unclear, though, how long that will take or how much it will cost, but again they are talking to those vendors. again today if you're headed out to work here in the next hour or so, if you go to the takoma station you shouldn't have any problems today. everything is normal today. if you do travel on saturday, keep in mind the station will be closed for 12 hours on saturday beginning at 7:00 a.m. joe, back to you. >> megan mcgrath reporting live. thanks very much. >> if you've got some extra cash, you can own one of washington's most famous landmarks. the famed watergate hotel is on the auction block. monument realty bought the hotel five years ago with hopes of restoring it to its original glory. but the watergate fell behind on its mortgage payments and it is

pope benedict xvi is in a hospital in northern italy with a broken wrist. the pontiff slipped and fell during his vacation in the alps. a vatican official says the pope will stay in the hospital for a few more hours as the doctors treat his fracture. the 82-year-old pope was able to walk into the hospital with the help of an aide and is otherwise in good health. >> we're following a developing story in indonesia this morning. bombs exploded at two luxury hotels, a j.w. marriott and a ritz-carlton this morning in jakarta, killing 9 people and wounding at least 50. the bombs exploded just two minutes apart. jakarta's police chief says the suspected suicide bombers were guests at one ofhe two hotels. there's been no immediate claim of responsibility but a terrorism analyst says the like ri culprit is an al qaeda-linked terrorist group. >> that is a lot of smoke. i walk quickly out of the hotel.

an unexplained delay in the autopsy results of michael jackson will keep the world in suspense for another two weeks to the cause of the pop star's death. the los angeles county coroner's office had expected to wrap up the report by early next week but now say the results are expected in two weeks. the report will include what drugs were in jackson's system when he died. >> an amazing fire rescue caught on videotape. take a look at this. a family of four was traveling near atlanta when their van suddenly burst into flames. a police officer saw the trouble and jumped into action.

wrist. >> we are also following a developing story in indonesia. bombs exploded at two luxury hotels, a j.w. marriott and a ritz-carlton this morning in jakarta, killing 9 and wounding at least 50. the bombs exploded just two minutes apart. jakarta's police chief says the suspected suicide bombers were guests at one of the two hotels. there's been no immediate claim of responsibility, but a terrorism analyst says the likely culprit is an an kal qaeda-linked terrorist group. >> a lot of smoke. i walked quickly out of the hotel. everything was quite crazy. very strange sensation. people had -- with blood and ese kind of things. it has been confusing. >> u.s. officials believe one american had been injured. >> this morning we're learning more about a shootout in greenbelt in which three people were shot, including an off-duty

capitol police officer and a 12-year-old girl. that gunfire broke out in an apartment parking a lot across from nasa goddard space center. michael flynn joins us with details. >> reporter: the bullets were flying in the parking lot last night when it was over, three people were shot, including a 12-year-old girl and an yf doubt i u.s. capitol police officer who is recovering here this morning. the u.s. capitol police officer rushed to prince george's hospital center last night after he was shot during an exchange of gunfire with a suspect. family members identify the officer as eddie thornton jr. >> they told us that he's lucid, he's talking. we just arrived. it was a mess over at the gate. we just tried to hurry and get here, leave as soon as we could so we could find out what his condition is. his wife is here. we're just trying to get in there and see what his condition is. >> do they have children? >> no, they just got married, june 13th.

tomorrow's his birthday. >> reporter: the shooting happened just after 7:00 p.m. and started out as an argument between two roommates at this apartment complex in greenbelt across from nasa. one of the roommate ss a military police officer at ft. myer. >> the off-duty officer left the apartment in an attempt to call for assistance. at that point, the roommate was able to locate the officer's off-duty weapon and subsequently ran out into the parking lot and began randomly firing the weapon. >> reporter: that's when police say officer thornton, who was off-duty, pulled into the parking lot. he was going to visit his mother who runs a day care there. he exchanged gunfire with the suspect. both were hit, along with a 12-year-old girl in a nearby apartment who was grazed by a stray bullet. police say none of the wound ss life-threatening, including officer thornton's, a huge relief to his family this morning. >> wife came out, told me that

welcome back. metro officials are still investigating the cause of last month's deadly metrorail crash and the ongoing investigation's expected to cause some big delays this weekend on the red line. news 4's megan mcgrath joins us live from the takoma metro station to tell us how the investigation will affect riders. good morning, megan. >> reporter: well, good morning, joe. it's had a big impact on riders here that use the takoma station. the ntsb continues with their testing, conducting tests, things like site distance tests down on the tracks near the takoma station. because they have to have their personnel down there along the tracks they have had to close down the station. the takoma station was closed yesterday at 10:00 a.m. for several hours.

if you're going to work today, you should be okay. no plans to close the station today. but tomorrow it's a completely different story. they will be closing down the takoma station for a 12-hour period on saturday, beginning at 7:00 in the morning. it will stay closedntil 7:00 p.m. on saturday. they will be running a shuttle bus service between ft. totten and silver spring to help move people around. we've been talking to riders who use the takoma station. they say it's all been very inconvenient, but they understand that safety has to come first. they say that they've been spending a lot of time on the bus. >> interesting. finding other modes to get home. and i'm glad you have another choice. >> reporter: what will you do? >> some other ways, getting a cab, walk, whatever it takes. regular bus. >> get delayed means i'm going to be late for the marc train to baltimore. so that's always a little inconvenient.

>> reporter: earlier this week, the ntsb issued urgent recommendations to metro. they called on metro to install a backup system to help monitor the movement of trains to make sure that collisions like we saw last month never happen again. now, at the time, metro's general manager said there was no such alert system out there, that they would have to actually create a system. no idea how long that would take or h much money it would cost, but metro's general manager now says that they have talked to a number of different vendors about creating that system, so they plan to do that. again, we're awaiting word on who will get that contract and just how long it will take to install such an alert system. again, if you use the takoma station, you're okay today, but if you plan on taking the train tomorrow, you're going to have to make some other arrangements. the station will be closed for a 12-hour period beginning at 7:00 a.m. on saturday. joe, back to you. >> megan mcgrath reporting live.

thank you very much. today we're getting a closer look at the hole that tore open in a southwest airlines jet in mid-flight earlier this week. that plane was bound for bwi thurgood marshall but had to make an emergency landing. investigators took these pictures which show the 17-inch by 14-inch hole. passengers reported hearing a loud boom before the cabin depressurized. investigators say so far they found no sign of corrosion or pre-existing damage to the 15-year-old plane. >> a historic moment for the nation's oldest civil rights group this week. president barack obama spoke at the national association for the advancement of colored people's centennial convention in new york city this week. the president spoke of the journey americans had traveled over the last 100 years, but also the need for the same perseverance seen in the past. >> the same commitment, the same sense of urgency, the same sense of sacrifice, the same sense of community, the same willingness
