breaking news right now at midday. pope benedict undergoes surgery after a fall this morning. we will have the latest his condition. breaking news also, indonesia, bombings at hotels left people dead. we have video of one of the blasts. and capitol hill, look at what happened there last night that could end up costing you money. first, we are expecting severe weather today. >> parts of the area under a severe thunderstorm watch. and tom kierein has more. >> that's right. the severe thunderstorm watch issued a half hour ago. we don't have severe weather in the metro area, but the clouds have rolled in. we did have sunshine ermer. all of the counties under a severe storm watch. and we don't have any conditions yet, but this includes the district of columbia, and mourn of the virginia and maryland, and this watch is in effect until 5:00 this afternoon. right now on radar, we have showers out in the panhandle of west virginia. thunder and lightning there as well as in the central shenandoah valley. and there is something developing, but not a severe storm yet. all off to the north and east.

temperatures are around the low 80s at this hour. and mostly cloudy, and thunderstorms likely this afternoon. and there is a small chance an isolated storm could produce wind damage and hail. and highs reaching the mid and upper 80s. a look at the weekend as well as next week and details on the severe thunderstorm watch coming up in a few minutes. >> thank you very much, tom. we are following breaking news out of prince george's county right now. a car sla into the a house along crew road just a short time ago. and this is the scene from chopper 4. part of the home's porch collapsed on top of the car. we did see one person being transported to the hospital. no word on any injuries. now to other breaking stories we told you about at the top of the newscast. pope benedict is now out of surgery and out of the hospital. he suffered a fall earlier this morning and broke his wrist. we are following the latest on that. police in indonesia says

suicide bombers are behind the hotel blast that killed eight people and wounded more than 50 others. let's begin with pope benedict undergoing surgery after breaking a fracture to his wrist. they had to ae realign the brok bone fragments. he is expected to recover quickly. he slipped and fell while vacationing, but had mass and breakfast before he went to the hospital. now, a terrifying scene for the people vacationing in jawcardia. and police now believe that suicide bombers were behind the attack that killed eight people and left dozens more, including americans, injured. we get the latest from nbc's williams. >> and it was ripped through the

ritz-carlton and mayrriott hotels. emergency services and parra police rushed to the scene. witnesses describe the horror of t the marriott blast. >> there was a lot of smoke, and everything was quite crazy. >> the hotels were popular with foreigners and endo kneesions. and the ritz-carlton bomb went off in the hotel restaurant as breakfast was being served. most major hotels in jaw car tau have tight security procedures. and the bombers may have been guests that smuggled in. and the jw marriott was previously damaged by a car bomb attack in 2003, and that killed

12 people. it came a year after the bally bomb that killed more than 200 people. and those attacks were blamed on jamar, a regional terror group linked with al qaeda. a massive crack down by anti-terror police captured or killed most of the leaders. and the country is being praised for the success against terrorism. and right now u.s. capital police officers recovery in a eoin gcergs g hospital. heas involvedn i authonot-o stlanight. and among the injured, a 12-year-old girl. michael flynn is live in greenbelt now. good morning, michael. >> reporter: good morning, joe. the wounded officer's family identified him as eddie thornton jr. this morning i talked to his mother who was with him at the apartment complex when the bullets started flying. >> i know my son, and he was not going to let that guy shoot at

everybody in the parking lot. >> reporter: this is the mother of the capital officer wounded last night during a shoot-out with a suspect. it happened right across from nasa in greenbelt. eddie thornton jr. was visiting his mother that runs a day care in the complex. >> a guy came out and started to shoot him. and i saw my son fall in the car and he ran to his car, had he went to his car, he got his gun. >> as barbara thornton called 911, she heard the rapid gun fire. >> my son's gun, evidently was going, da, da, da, and the other gentleman was just shooting at anything and everything. and my son came to the car and said it's okay, mom, get up. and when i got up i saw him and he was shot. that's when i went bonkers.

>> reporter: and a 12-year-old girl was hit. barbara thornton is proud of her son who says he probably saved her life and the life of others. >> i am blessed, and i thank god that my son was there. at the time, i was hoping that he wouldn't do anything, but he did. and i am just glad that he is safe. i don't know how many people would have gotten shot if he had not been. but the man just kept walking towards us. >> reporter: the suspect also remains hospitalizeedthis morning. police say he got the gun from his roommate who is a military police officer over at nearby ft. myer. this started as an argument between the two roommates. none of the three people who were shot have life-threatening wounds. officer thornton is in stable condition this morning. his mother says today is his birthday. joe, back to you. >> michael, thank you very much.

this is the second shooting involving a capital police officer in just two days. on wednesday, officers shot and killed 27-year-old white just blocks from the capital building. he would not drop his gun.st he fired at the officers and was killed during the shoot-out. white has been arrested on weapons, assault and drug charges in the past. his family told news4 yesterday afternoon that theyantno believe he really meant to hurt anybody. they say he just had become a father four weeks ago. a deadly accident in prince george's county killed one person overnight. after midnight, we are told a vehicle struck a poll. and officials think the driver lost control of the vehicle. the unidentified driver died at the scene. n to a developing story. crews are on the scenery pairing a 24 inch water main break that broke this morning after 6:00.

it's happened at the intersection of frank cona and telegraph road. and the section between will muchen road and telegraph is closed. and fairfax police say there is not much water in the road, and nobody should be experiencing any water pressure problems now. let's go to jerry edwards and the traffic network now. >> jerry? good morning, chopper 4 was over the scene as we told you about the accident involving the overturned ups truck. and that was near 228. and one vehicle, but the tractor trailer overturned. authorities remain on the scene at this hour. it could have been worse. just this side right there, that's a gas station. if the truck had slid any more, it could have hit the gas pumps. that did not happen, fortunately. and 228, and 301 remains closed. and they are trying to get lanes open for the afternoon rush

hour. and then authorities are clearing another accident at triangle. and the friday getaway, it's already a very slow go on area highways trying to head south in particular at this hour. joe, back to you. >> jerry, thank you very much. and metro tried to strengthen its rails by putting together a backup system. they have been meeting with dozens of firms to figure tout a way to better protect the train system. investigators say what metro has in place is inadequate. some experts say it could take years and take millions to do that. and riders can expect delays this weekend because of the on going investigation into the red line. the tacoma will close from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. tomorrow. they are running tests on the tracks. trains wil run between glenn

maunt and silver spring, and ft. taughten and shady grove. there will be shuttle service to help people get around those closures. and new now, the health care plan. the committee voted 23-18 to approve the bill. that bill would improve $544 billion on new taxes on households making more than $350,000 per year. republicans complain the bill would hurt small business owners, and democrats say the increases would affect 4% of tax filers that report small business income. also new at midday, one of the nation's largest banks is doing better these days. bank of america is reporting record profits. it's the third bank to do that this week. bank of america says its trading business helped boost profits,

hours. we had some sunlight there. over the last hour or so we have seen the clouds increasing, and coming up from virginia and across the potomac and into the district of maryland, and those clouds cover our sky at this hour. as we look at the live view of the sky watchercamera. and we look at the city camera. there is a sailboat there on the potomac river. and there is a bit of a gentle breeze. and 82 at reagan national. and the july rainfall is over 1/ of rain. that's below the agave.er take a look at all of the counties in color. this is the zone of potential severe weather. it's a severe thunderstorm watch. it's in effect until 5:00 this afternoon. and it includes the district of combia, and montgomery, and prince george's and fairfax counties, td v mosf oirginia and maryland, and all the way down to the carolinas. and this is going continue to be

in effect until 5:00 this afternoon. right now on radar, we are seeing some rain now showing up where you see the area of green. there is moderate rain there. and radar is scanning the sky here. no precipitation from the blue rage to the bay right now. that area of rain out in west virginia may make its way up into western maryland and the counties to the north of washington over the next couple hours. but no severe weather yet. and the temperatures is 82 in washington, and montgomery and prince george's counties, it's the same there. and a steamy dew point of 68. they have a gentle breeze there. and eastern shore, more sun there. in the mid-80s there. and in the mountains, where they lad the rain, it's in the cool mid-60s. and then we are watching the rain advance off to the north and east and all of the area in

yellow under a potential for strong storms. and eastern west virginia, and all of maryland, and the eastern shore, and pennsylvania, and there could be flight delays between here and boston and portland, maine. 2:00 to 7:00 looks like the time for strong storms to develop. and humidity out ahead of the front coming up. and all of this acting to be the trigger for strong storms to develop. and then as we go forward, there are colors where we could get strong storms late afternoon and early this evening and then up towards new england, and then it will begin to clear out. we will have lower humidity moving in. and on sunday, it looks like it will be pleasant. for the afternoon, mostly cloudy. thunderstorms are likely, and there is a slight risk of an isolated storm could produce wind damage as well as hail. and the primetime would be around 2:00 p.m. as late as 7:00

welcome back. how much would you give to control the weather? bill gates is trying to take the bite out of the massive storms that cost millions, if not billions of dollars worth of damage. he wants to use established scientific knowledge and the prototype of damaging impact most hurricanes have. >> reporter: just about any hurricane that makes landfall these days is a billion-dollar storm. and scientists have long tried to figure out a way to kill a hurricane. in the 1960s, one hopeful idea seems promising. tow an iceberg in the hurricane's path, and the ice would melt and cool the ocean's temperature. and it's the warm waters that fuel the hurricane's strength. and now comes bill gates. gates and a team of scientists

have an ingenius plan. and as the warm water slaushs over, temperatures could be 40 degrees colder. and then cold water is pumped to the surface. and that zaps the hurricane's strength. >> it's plausible, yes. it's possible, maybe. it's is realistic, i cannot answer that. that's not my job, it's their job to demonstrate the at tr attribution and proof. >> reporter: and then with a bucket and a tube, demonstrated the physics involved. when the red water in the bucket is higher than sea level, gravity forces it down, and just as would happen in the floating barges. >> the physics is right.

11:31. the pope slipped and fell during his vacation in the alps, and the surgery realigned the broken bone fragments, he is expected to recover. two bombs exploded after two suicide bombers are suspected of setting off bombs in hotels in indonesia. and we are over the scene of a car that slammed into, oh, deer, dmv in leesburg. it happened just before 11:00 a.m. don't do that. we are told the person apparently hit the gas instead of the break. nobody was injured. a building inspector has been called in to check out the damage to the dmv. no word on whether that person was there to take a driving test. or what impact this might have on that. but one can guess. >> yes. we are also following the

big story right now. severe storms are moving through our area right now. >> much of the area is under a severe thunderstorm watch right now. >> correction, we don't have thunderstorm watches right now, and as we look at the map all the counties in color are under a severe thunderstorm watch. the conditions are right for severe storms to develop today. it includes all the northern virginia and the district of columbia and most of maryland. and it may bextended past 5:00 later on. right now on the regional radar, we have light to moderate rain. and it's west of virginia, and all the way down to charlottesville. and this is going to past to the west of washington over the next couple hours. this is beneficial rain. and it's a parched month. we have over a tenth of an inch of rain so far in washington for

the month of july. and temperatures now in the low 80s around the region. 82 in washington. and they have had the rain out of the mountains, and it's in the 60s right now. and this is associated with a cool front coming into west virginia with an area of low pressure forming along the front. in the yellow zone, a chance of strong storms, 2:00 to 7:00 p.m., and includes our entire region. mostly cloudy, and thunderstorms likely later today. and possibly severe with damaging winds and hail. and then tonight any storms that do get going to disabate by late evening. and there may be a rain delay for the nationals and cubs tonight. and then low humidity in place for the weekend. a delightful weekend with cooler temperatures and lots of sunshine. and a few clouds into monday and next week. more humidity returns and a chance of afternoon showers. and let's go out to jerry who has been watching the road.

>> usually midday is kind of quiet. enter loop of the beltway is jammed from connecticut avenue to new hampshire avenue. and construction takes await far left lane. and that's eastbound from connecticut over to new hampshire avenue. it's crawling. try 410 to save yourself aggravation. and 95 virginia, folks are getting out early today. we are jammed making the trip from springfield, and there are delays on both sides of the beltway to go south on 95. all volume until you reach 123, and then it's jammed because of an earlier accident down in triangle that is now out of the way. and swine flu is affecting the area, and this time it appeared at a summer camp. two campers tested for swine flu but are recovering. and several other children with

flu-like symptoms are being looked at. today we are getting a closer look at the hole that tore in a southwest airlines jet mid flight earlier this week. it was bound for bwi but had to make an emergency landing. they took these pictures, that showed a 17 inch by 14 inch hole. and passengers reported hearing aloud boom before the cabin depressurized. and investigars say so far they have found no sign of corrosion or preexisting damage to the 15-year-old plane. and right now, the mother accused of murdering her four daughters reconvened. yesterday, for the first time, jacks showed real emotion. her mother, mamie jacks took the stand and described her daughter as a good mother but had not seen them since 2005.

bonita jacks became emotional during her mother's testimony, and the judge called a recession so she could regain her composure. and a funeral was held today for byrd and melanie. pamela wiggins is charged with being an accessory after the murder of byrd and melanie billings. and six men and a teenager also face charges in the case. and police say robbery was a likely motive. and now a case of murder on the high seas. and there was a passenger that was arrested for murdering his wife on the ship. robert mcgill killed his wife after a domestic shoot. and it happened on the last leg of the five-night crews to baja, california.

the ship returned to san diego yesterday. now are the latest on the death of michael jackson. new images have surfaced of his children with a previously unreleased song. this is what really happened during the pepsi commercial in 1984. >> this is the first look at the kids in more than a week. 11-year-old paris, and 12-year-old prince, and 7-year-old blanket. they are at a jehovah's witness church. and the kids former thanny, grace, is with the children, too. she was reportedly fired by michael jackson back in april. but since michael's death, the jackson family has brought her back to help. >> he loves hischildren, and his children love him. >> and in an exclusive

deal. now there is another controversy brewing. around michael jackson's infamous accident, in video just obtained by "us weekly," you can see his hair catch fire while filming a pepsi commercial. now that the video is out, this fire captain is breaking his silence for the first time since the accident. >> to take where he got his hair burnt was a deviation from the other takes. >> reporter: he says jackson was told to stand on the platform for a better shot. >> i was backstage, and i overheard a conversation, and he was told to stay there he would look more majestic. and he wanted to know how severe the burn was. he also asked about his face. he said, did any of the spark hit my face, or is my face burnt. i told him, michael, your face

is fine. >> many say it was this accident that sparked an addiction to pain killers, and an addiction that may have ultimately taken his life. as police haul pill models from his home, nbc news now confirmed investigators are meeting with prosecutors, gearing up for possible criminal charges. this is a former l.a. prosecutor and worked with the same people handling this case. >> you want to have prosecutors involved at the beginning, because they will have an eye for what is provable in court. overnight, the l.a. county corner's office confirmed the toxicology report has been delayed. it could be another two weeks to learn what was in michael jackson's system was died. and then here is a song that was leaked online. called "a place with no name."

more on the breaking news story we told you about a few minutes ago. chopper 4 is live over the scene of a car that slam into the a

dmv in leesburg. and we just learned the dmv will be closed for the rest of the day, but will reopen tomorrow morning. the driver apparently hit the gas instead of the break. and you can see the car is being towed away from the scene. nobody was injured in that crash. take a look at this video. this is incredible fire and rescue caught on a police car dash cam. and keep your eye on the lower right-hand part of the screen. a family of four was traveling to atlanta when their van bursts into flames. two of the people inside the van got out safely, but a daughter and her disabled mother were stuck. and the officer was able to drag both of them to safety. both were burned, but are expected to be okay. 12 people landed in the hospital with minor injuries, following another accident at disney world. the disney world bus slammed into the back of another bus after the first one slowed to merge. and the driver of the second bus is expected to be ticketed now

for careless driving. 50 people were onboard the two buses. the accident happened less than two weeks after two disney world mono rail trains collided killing a driver. and then walker was arrested at casino. he wrote a million dollars worth of bad checks and failed to pay up over $800,000 in gambling debts over the past year. police say he took out markers with $1 million from three casinos. he earned nearly $100 million during his career. 11:47 now. one of the biggest banks are reporting a major profit. and how about a nightcap the starbucks? we are not talking coffee. we are joined now with those stories and the rest of the business headlines.

good morning, courtney. >> yeah, good morning. the stocks are a bit lower, not a whole lot of action going on as far as trade is concerned. we have a lot of news this morning. asian markets closed modestly higher overnight. and they were not shaken by the hotel blasts in karta. i will run through some of the earnings. bank of america reporting earnings slightly above expectations. and general electric, which is the parent of nbc universal of which cnbc and wrc are part. and the second quarter, eps, coming in slightly higher than expected at 26 cents per share. and so citigroup reported a profit on the sale of a majority

stake in smith barney. and there are reportsha tte got last night, both big blue, imb and google. and housing starts rose 3.6% in june to the highest level in seven months. there is a lot going on for the market to think about. cit is evaluating its options as they try to improve its cash position and avoid bankruptcy. the bondholders are considering plans to swap about $5 billion in debt. and cit may raise up to $3 billion in financing. starbucks is opening up a cafe in seattle next week that features nighttime hours, and live entertainment, and beer and wine, along with coffee, of course. it will be called the 15th avenue coffee and tea. it will sell products without the starbucks' logo. and starbucks said it may open
