4. >> yes, dined. severe thunderstorm watch across most of the area earlier today. but national weather service has been turning back the number of counties impact bid that. the only ones left are into southern maryland and prince george's, anne arundel county, calvert, charles, st. mary's counties in maryland also under the severe thunderstorm watch. this goes until 5:00. also, for you folks in fredericksburg, stafford, spotsylvania, down into the northern neck and tide water region, also under the watch until 5:00. as you can see there on live doppler not much in the way of rain and certainly no severe weather around the area just yet. so that's definitely welcomed news. you can see there is a little bit more of a severe weather threat if you are traveling towards virginia beach, down towards richmond and virginia beach areas, be on the lookout. under a tornado watch and goes until 7:00. all is fairly quiet around our area at this point in time. cloudy skies, couple of light sprinkles around most of the light rain now up across the northern portions of frederick and washington county, maryland. up into portions of southern pennsylvania and temperatures in the upper 70s and low 80s. we caught a break from the heat

today. as a result of those clouds, not only didn't we make it to degrees but that did help cut back on our risk of seeing anything in the way of severe weather. still can't rule out one two lonely rumbles of thunder during the evening hours. certainly not looking at any widespread severe weather. welcom ns. another delightful weekend coming on the way and we could use a little bit more rain. what about next week? will it happen? we will detail that and give you the 7-day forecast in a few minutes. back to you, pat. >> thanks, chuck. several americans are among those injured in two hotel bombings in indonesia. police now say suicide bombers posing as guests carried out the attacks at american hotels in jakarta and the blast killed at least eight people and wounded dozens more. it was a terrifying scene. ian williams has the latest. >> reporter: picture emerging from the investigation is a chillingly well-planned attack. bombers checked into the hotel perhaps as early as wednesday. they took a room onhe 18th floor of the marriott and it was there they assembled the bomb before taking it down to the

breakfast room for the coffee shop this morning. where it caused such devastating damage. >> it had -- marriott. a lot of people praying. ten minutes after -- building moved a lot. >> there was a very, very loud noise. i looked up and there was white smoke and i left. >> reporter: as important who is responsible, suspicion is falling on a terror group associated with al qaeda that was responsible for the bali bombing in 2002. the marriott bombing in 2003. it has appred to have been dormant. the indonesians have been very successful in arresting and killing its leaders. and they have been very pleased with themselves they have appeared to put this terror behind them. the security of the hotels now have been very, very tight. the president of indonesia today

was visibly shaken by what happened. he really did think with indonesia had turned the corner and now, of course, there is a great deal of concern there. back to you. >> to a high seas murder myery. a california man is due in court this afternoon. hay is accused of killing his wife during their luxury cruise to mexico. robert ma gill of los angeles was arrested. police say that he murdered his 55-year-old wife, shirley, during a domestic dispute. officials believe it happened tuesday. three days into that cruise from san diego to mexico aboard carnival cruise ship. the ship's security found the woman's body in the couple's cabin after a passenger reported a disturbance. the same passenger expressed concern that a woman may be dead. a funeral was held today for the florida couple murdered during a home invasion robbery. eight suspects are now in custody in florida. police say the robbers took a safe from the pensacola home of melanie and byrd billings. what was in that safe, jewelry,

family documents, prescription medication for the ds. the billings were well known for adopting special needs children. we are learning more today about a gunfight in prince george's county that wounded three people and hapned last night outside of an apartment complex in the 8500 block of greenbelt road in greenbelt. among the injured, a 12-year-old girl and an off-duty u.s. capitol police officer who just happened to be visiting his mother when the bullet started flying. he was released from the hospital this afternoon. news4's michael flynn has more. >> i know my son. he wasn't going to let that guy just shoot at everybody in the parking lot. >> reporter: barbara thornton is the mother of the capitol police officer wounded last night during a shoot-out with a suspect. it happened in an apartment building parking lot right across from nasa in greenbelt. 31-year-old officer eddie thornton jr. was visiting his mother who runs a daycare center at the complex and a man ran up to them and said that there was

another man firing a gun nearby. >> when this came out and started shoulding. i just felt like my -- my son ran to his car and he was going to his car and when he went to his car, he -- he got his gun. >> reporter: as barbara thornton called 911 she heard the rapid gunfire. >> mason -- you know, he was just shooting. he was wildly shooting at anything and everything. mason came and said mom, get up. and when i got up, he was -- liked at him and i saw he was shot. that's when i went bonkers. >> reporter: officer thornton was shot in the back. the suspect was also hit. so was a 12-year-old girl who lives in this apartment. she was grazed by a stray bullet that shattered a glass patio door. barbara thornton is proud of her son who she says probably saved her life and the lives of others. >> i'm blessed. i'm just blessed. i thank god that my son was

there. at the time i -- i was hoping that he wasn't -- wouldn't do anything but he did. and i -- i'm glad he's safe. i don't know how many people would have gotten shot if he hadn't been. but the man just kept walking towards us. >> reporter: the suspect was also hospitalized. police say he got the gun from his roommate and who is a military police officer over at nearby fort meyer. investigators say this all started as an argument between the two roommates. police say none of the three people who were shot have life threatening wounds. in prince george's county, michael flynn, news4. pope benedict xvi is out of the hospital. hay had surgery this morning to repair his broken right wrist. the 82-year-old pontiff left the hospital smiling and waving to the crowd. as youan see, his left hand, the vatican says he slipped in his vacation while vacationing in northern italy. the pope is in high spirits and will suffer no long-term effects. he will be in a cast a monchlgts back in this country, if you

county. the ups tractor trailer truck and the car collided in the southbound lanes of route 301 in laplata. the truck began leaking diesel fuel. three area businesses had to be evacuated and the road is now reopened. the driver of this car slammed into a house in upper marlboro this morning and had to be rescued from the vehicle. the accident happened just after 9:30. the driver was trapped after the roof of the home's porch came crashing down on the car. he was airlifted to the hospital. just a few minutes later, another car slammed into a mv office in leesburg. fortunately no one was injured. we are hearing that the driver hit the gas instead of the brakes. the office had to be shut down the rest of the day. but will be open in the morning. and crews spent much of the day repairing a 24-inch water main that broke in fairfax county this morning. at the intersection of franconia

and telegraph road. there wasn't much water in the road but it did tie up the morning rush for quite a while. some breaking news to report now out of northwest washington. police are investigating an apparent stabbing in rock creek park. it happened near beech h beech drive. the victim was stabbed in the face and the suspect fled covered in blood. park police and d.c. police set up a perimeter and they are searching for the suspect. that's behind the omni hotel in northwest washington. while the next step in the process of determining who will get permanent custody of michael jackson's three children is playing out today in los angeles. meanwhile, investigators continue to walk a path that seems increasingly close to becoming a criminal investigation. jay gray has a closer look. >> reporte another full week of negotiations over who will raise michael jackson's three children continues today with a

northwest wind at five. morning low only 76 degrees. so a very sticky and steamy start. here's the check of doppler over the last hour. you can sort of set your mind at ease and had the severe thunderstorm watch for much of the area earlier upon the pink shaded counties now they have dropped southern maryland out. now only the northern neck down into tide watt reernlg onlies of virginia even have any real chance of getting anything in the way of showers or thunderstorms. we will zoom in here a bit and show you where the light rain showers are coming down. northern anne arundel county, headed towards the baltimore beltway right now. light showers there. the capital beltway, for the most part, rain-free at this point in tile. can't rule out a few stray light rain showers during the evening rush hour but shouldn't be enough to slow traffic down too much. western, howard shall northern montgomery county, frederick county, maryland, carroll county, marand, getting in on light rain showers. one, two rumbles of thunder have been heard but certainly nothing in the way of severe weather around here. and a couple of showers moving out of the west virginia mountains at this point in time. we will keep an eye on that. temperatures in the rain-cooled

welcome back to news4 at 4:30. i'm pat lawson muse. >> i'm craig melvin. it is believed suicide attackers posing as guests detonated bombs inside of two luxury hotels in indonesia's capital today. eight people are dead. at least eight americans are among the 50 wounded. bombs exploded inside jakarta's marriott hotel first and two minutes later inside the ritz-carlton. >> a cut. capitol police officer was released from the hospital this afternoon. officer eddie thornton and a 12-year-old girl were injured when another man fired shots ouide an apartment building in greenbelt, maryland, last night. thornton was off duty at the time but confronted the suspect. the suspect was also injured in the shoot-out. the investigation into michael jackson's death continues today. there are reports now that investigators interviewed as many as two dozen doctors.

a family member waving frantically and screaming for help. while a mother and daughter struggle to escape the inferno. the mom, disabled, dragged across the pavement to safety. >> oh, god! >> reporter: in all, three of the four occupants suffered burns in the panic effort to get out and away from the engulfed minivan. mother and daughter remain hospitalized. david king, the man in the light colored shirt at the back of the van, tried in vain to fight the fire which quickly grew out of control. apparently sparked by a blown tire. king says he is grateful for the quick response of five police officers who helped his family and their beloved pooch avert disaster. ron mott, nbc news, atlanta. >> incredible pictures. they are still cleaning up after wednesday's incredible tanker

truck explosion and fire thattes destroyed part after bridge near detroit. these are new pictures from the scene and crews spent the past couple of days cleaning up the debris left behind after the i-75 overpass came crashing down. more than 90,000 drivers use the bridge every day. there were only minor injuries reported from the accident. and new video of the entire incident has surfaced. surveillance cameras at a nearby gas station caught the explosion. you will see tonight the upper right corner of your screen there. witnesses say flames shot up nearly 200 pete into the air and that's what melted the overpass. and caused the overpass to collapse. still ahead on "news4 at 4:00," fate plays cupid. find out how one woman's online name game ended up changing the rest of her life. we will check back in on the ribs and chicken that we are barbecui barbecuing. you probably heard about

the last hour. the good news is that our severe weather risk is starting to dinish. the national weather service dropped all of our metropolitan counties that were under the severe thunderstorm watch until 5:00. now all of that watch area has been trimmed away. but that does not mean we are completely done with the thunderstorm chances. another cell developing here just down towards the franconia-springfield area. southern parts of fairfax county and capitol beltway. we will keep an eye on this over the next hour or so. could expect a couple of rumbles of thunder and brief periods of rainy weather in and around downtown washington. by and large, no widespread severe weather is occurring and we are not expecting any more. but can't rule out the chance of a thundershower here for this evening. really our rain chances don't end completely until sometime just after midnight. sunday mostly sunny with highs in the mid 80s. monday the clouds start to come back with a high of 82. humidity with the rain chance returns for tuesday. wednesday and thursday. so it will feel a lot more like summertime.
