scene. jane watrel is there live now with the latest. jane? >> this is a devastating scene. there's a lot of children that are in this apartment complex. we are in the oak ridge apartment complex which is an older complex. we have chopper 4 up above. we also have a ground shot here. and apparently the prince george's county firefighter came very quickly. they got a call at 5:12. and they were here within four minutes. when they got here, though, they found two young boys and then -- an apartment that apparently had flames but joining us now to give us details is mark brady, spokesman with the prince george's county fire department. mark, tell me what happened when the firefighters got here. they got here within four minutes. >> they did. they all arrived about the same time, within four minutes. they knew had had to work from the amount of smoke coming from the apartment and 911 callers told there were two young men still inside the apartment. they did a valiant job of going inside and knocking down the

fire and locateding the two children inside a back room and brought them out and their condition was extremely grave at the time. cpr has been in the area and taken to an area hospital. >> reporter: i know the investigation is still going on. any thoughts to what may have happened, if this was accidental? do we know at this point? >> not at this point. we are still -- you know, making sure the hotspots are out on this fire and came out and around 5:15. 45 minutes into it. so we are still making sure the fire is out completely. fire investigators are on the scene and conducting sber views and trng to determine exactly what happened. >> reporter: looking at the building it does not look like the whole building has gone up. you said these are older, well-built apartments. >> these apartments were built back when they knew how to build apartments. and typically when we come to the two story or three-story red brick apartment buildings the fires are contained to the apartment of origin, they are that well built ask and that was the story in this case here. >> reporter: i know the kids were rushed out. did you know if there were any adults, were people yelling for people to go in and get these young boys?

>> you can see it is a busy community. a lot of people out and nice night out. we received numerous 911 calls reporting smoke coming from the building and then neighbors reporting that the kids were still inside. the father of the children, i understand, was on the scene at some point. and he also has been taken to the hospital to be with the children. >> reporter: do we know if these are toddlers, young children? >> we are talking between 4 and 5 years of age. reporter: very young kids. >> extremely young. >> reporter: all right. thank you, mark. what happens now? is there -- are there investigates here? what happens from this point on? >> fire investigators are on location and conducting the interviews of anybody that they can find that knows something about this incident. the prince george's county police department will come in and assist us in this because in the -- the event there is a death, that the -- police department will have to get involved. they join us in this investigation. and we will go from there. >> reporter: tragic. a tragic for our family. >> any time -- any time you have a death, tragic death, it is

terrible. it is compounded when it is some young child involved. >> reporter: to recap, mark, thank you very much. 5:12 this afternn, firefighters responded here to the oak ridge apartment complex where two young boys, 4 to 5 years old, were found inside an apartment and there had been a fire. the boys were pulled from that fire. very grave condition. taken to prince george's county hospital. back to you. >> thanks, jane. also in the news today, attacks at two luxury hotels in indonesia. suicide bombers posing as guests set off a deadly pair of explosions. >> twin bombings in jakarta killed at least eight people and wounded dozens more. julie carey joins with us the latest on this. >> reporter: all of the americans in the attack a are expected to survive. three years since the last big attack in the region. crackdown there kept terrorism at bay until today. the bomb blast came just minutes apart and guests a two hotels

were just waking up or sitting down to breakfast. at the ritz-carlton the explosion tore through the restaurant. at the marriott the bomb appeared to be planted in the basement and an undetonated explosive was found in an 18 floor guest room. stunned guests, some still dressed in bathrobes, described the scene. >> like an earthquake we had about a year or two ago. >> moving a lot. a lot of smoke. everything was crazy. >> reporter: this closed circuit video taken from the marriott shows the moment of the explosion. a man pulls a bag across the lobby towards the restaurant when a flash and smoke filled the air. emergency workers and anti-terror police rushed to the scene. soon after, victims were carried from the hotel. and at least eight people were killed. and more than on 50 were wounded, including eight americans. none of their injuries was believed to be life threatening. in recent years, indonesian elected leaders had been pray r

praised for making a strong stand against terrorists. in 2003 a car bombing at the marriott killed 12. after that attack, blamed on the al qaeda linked group, police killed or captured many of its leaders. the u.s. state department spokesman says today's attack does not necessarily represent a setback for indonesia's dem october. >> i these are acts of terrorism. committed by people who don't want to see indonesia succeed. they want to see democracy disappear. but we are going to support the indonesian government and in its efforts to find out who carried out this -- these attacks. >> reporter: indonesian authorities have not yet named a culprit, here in washington, metropolitan police issued a statement in response to the jakarta bombings saying they have given patrol officers here relevant details and a list of hotel locations. they will not reveal hotels in

our area are on heightened alert. today thousands of protesters packed a prayer hall in iran while an overflow crowd faced off against the police outside. this happened at tehran university today. police and pro-gornment militiamen fired tear gas at the protesters that chatted death to the dictator. those protesters also called on president ahmadinejad to resign. inside the prayer hall and an iranian cleric who backs the opposition delivered a sermon that bluntly criticized the country's leadership over the crackdown on the lexapro tests. opposition leader was in the front row there and the protesters say ahmadinejad and other iranian leaders stole the election from mousavi last month. dozens of protesters were arrested. we con to follow a developing story in northwest d.c. police searching an area that includes rock creek park and national zoo after a violent

attack late this afternoon. a man was stabbed near rock creek parkway and calvert street. not far from the omni hotel in connecticut avenue. d.c. police s the male victim ran to the u.s. park police stables meesh and after he was cut in the face. the man was also robbed. police are now searching for that suspect. a woman working as a nanny in maryland has been arrested on child abuse and child pornography charges. police arrested ck22-year-old harnich yesterday in hyattsville. she was accused of transmitting pornographic images of children over the internet using a live web cam. the investigators say that she also showed the victims explicit images on a computer. she's from bosnia and is in the u.s. on an expired work visa. she's believed to have worked for several families in the area. city police in hyattsville want any family who let their children in the suspect's care to give them a call. the capitol police officer

is out of the hospital in toght after a teplrito shooting in prince george's.co tyun itpetyap hne apou atseidnme artt complex in the 8500 block of greenbelt ad in greenbelt a just across t nasaoddard sp eace erntce. officer and 12-year old girl were injured in the shoot-out. derrick ward has our report. >> bullet holes in cars, among the remnants of the shoot-out that occurred in the parking lot of of the apartment in greenbell. the shoot-out left three people injured. among them a 12-year-old girl, grazed by a bullet that entered her second floor apartment. it all started with an argument between an off-duty fort meyers army base police offer and civilian roommate inside the apartment they shared. >> the off-duty officer left the apartment in an attempt to call for assistance. and at that point the roommate was able to locate the officers' off duty weapon and subsequently ran out into the parking lot and began randomly firing the

weapon. >> reporter: the officer's roommate was among the trio of wounded and he was shot by an off-duty capitol police officer who had come to the complex to visit his mother and witnessed the first round of gunfire. he subsequently shot the gunman and was himself wounded. >> my son ran to his car and he was going to his car and when he went to his car, he -- he -- got his gun and all i know is i was laying down and i called 911 and they told me that the policemen were on their way. and when they did that, i -- my son came to the car and said it is okay, mom, get up. when got up, he was -- i looked at him and saw he was shot. >> reporter: that officer has since been released from the hospital as has the 12-year-old girl grazed by one of the dozens of rounds fired in this parking lot. as important the third victim in the shooting the roommate of the ft. myers military base police officer, he remains hospitalized with several gunshot wounds to the upper body. that's when u.s. capitol police officer released today, double

good news for him. today is his birthday. police have not released the name of the capitol police officer involved because he's both a victim and a witness. he was the chief supplier of a heroin ring that infiltrate ad northern virginia high school. today he learned his fate. 33-year-old antonio harper of waldorf was sentenced to more than 26 years in prison. and an fbi investigation traced serious heroin use and distribu aono troo gup ofup stwed elfigh el school. the investigation began following the overdose deaths of four teenagers including alicia of centreville. according to court documents harper and his co-conspirators put anywhere from $100,000 to $300,000 bags of heroin into the hands of addicts from 2006 to 2008. a federal judge is allowing a wrongful death lawsuit to go ahead in the case of a man who was shot with a taser by a deputy share nif frederick county.

a young woman outside of the vehicle was frantically trying to get to her sister and mother who is disabled. there are several explosions while police dragged the victims to safety. the mother and one her dauters were burned but they are expected to recover. the fire was sparked when a tire blew and ignited one of the flammables. there are mixed signals tonight about the nation's economic recovery. jobless numbers are up in several states. and 15% unemployment rate in michigan is the highest ofny state since 1984. yet new housing starts rose to that highest level this year. the disparity is renewing debate over wther president obama's stimulus plan is working. steve handelsman reports. >> reporter: the patient is stable. experts agree the u.s. economy is not getting worse. and construction of new homes rose, 3.6% in june to the highest level in six months.

this year marks the 60 birthday of the university of maryland's wind tunnel. researchers use that tunnel to test the effects of hurricane force while -- for winds on cars, planes, boats, roofs. today they tested the effects on craig melvin. he withstood wind speeds up to 117 miles an hour while tethered to the floor. those are the same kind of winds

tile. and the -- tide water area of virginia. there you can see the batch to our north, northern maryland. folks up there, had you a fair am rain. there is the other batch of the severe storms down through southern parts of virginia. and blacksburg, virginia, over an inch of rain. 70-mile-an-hour winds around suffolk, virginia. there has been damage but not around here. and really not much in the way of rain. one batch moving off now into northeastern parts of maryland and right in and around town. there have been one or two lonesome showers that have been trying to pop up. there is one for you folks around potomac. and there is another one down around dale city. there are a few others that may come through coming out of the blue ridge. keep an eye on those. we had a bit of nasty weather. well to the south. i want to show you really industrial strength hail. when we talk about hail, this is what happens in austria. insburg, austria. summertime. there is the guy shoveling out his driveway. now he says you know this

a look at the top story. two boys fighting for their lives after they were rescued from a fire in riverdale, maryland. >> the fire broke out just before 5:15. the police say the boys are around the age of 4 or 5. jane watrel joins us from the scene. >> reporter: we have updated information. the boys are 7 and 6 years old. they are clinging to life. according to mark brady with the prince george's county fire department. and firefighters got the call around 5:12 tonight for a working fire. they arrived at the scene and went into the first floor and found two young boys. ages 7 and 6 in a back bed room and believe the fire may have originated in the kitchen. mark brady says when they found the children they were not breathing and did not have a pulse. so cpras started immediately. and they were transported to the hospital where they are listed in extremely critical condition.

neighbors we talked to tell us that they saw smoke coming from what they thought was an air conditioning unit in the window. they started banging on doors and, in fact, one neighbor even used a baseball bat to knock down the windows to try to get inside. firefighters arrived and got in and knocked the fire down quickly and found the two young boys, ages 7 and 6 unconscious. not breathing and started cpr and took them to the hospital. that's the scene here in riverdale. we will have more tonight on "news4 at 11:00." the banita jacks trial continues today. jacks is accused of killing her four daughters in the southeast d.c. home. neighbors are testifying that the familiar sounds of her children playing stopped abruptly two years ago. pat collins with the latest. >> reporter: banita jacks, she is taking an active role in her defense here at superior court. talking to her attorneys about questions to be asked. making strategy decisions that could greatly influence the

outcome of this case. it was banita jacks that decided to have this trial in front of judge frederick weisberg and instead of having a trial in front of the jury. kenny robinson is a former prosecutor and savvy criminal defense attorney. >> weisberg is a good guy. to try the case in front of judge weisberg with his long standing judgment since 1978 and experience and intelligence, his track record, that's like automatically may as well telephone in the verdict and send her off to a maximum security prison. that's how that's going to play. >> reporter: banita jacks charged with killing her four daughters, ages 5 to 17. she says that they were possessed by demons and they died in their sleep. jacks continued to live in her house for several months as the bodies of her girls decomposed and mummified. is this insane?

overruling her defense attorneys, jacks chose not to mountain insanity defense. >> if she goes to trial on guilt and innocence, and on insanity, over objection or not, with a judge, period, with that judge without getting him upset, no chance. those lawyers know that. so she is a tough client. she's controlling what they do. >> reporter: in court banita jacks neighbor said that in spring 2007, jacks daughters seemed to disappear one by one. and in summer 2007, she noticed a foul odor near the jacks house. and in fall 2007, she ssay thas jacks told her girls are fine, they are staying in north carolina. by the fall of 2007, banita jacks daughters were dead. inside her house.

i'm pat collins, news4, washington. for people would use the red line, it will be a tough weekend. the takoma station is going to close while officials continue their investigation. into the deadly metro crash last month. the officials focusing on a malfunctioning circuit that continues to be a problem. that circuit was supposed to stop the red line train that crashed, killing nine people on june 22. the problem circuit has been replaced but still is not working. metro and ntsb officials don't know why. >> this is not a situation where we can say we have the solution. take us a little while to get. it worked out. we will get back to you. this is where we are in the dark. and the public needs to know that. >> nsb investigators plan to conduct tests on the tracks between the takoma and fort totten stations tomorrow. rail service between those two stations will be suspended. the takoma station will be closed from 7:00 in the morning

until 7:00 in the evening tomorrow. couple of strange accidents across our area this morning. 11:00, driver crashed into the motor vehicle office in loudoun county. this happened at the dmv on edwards ferry road in leesburg. investigators say the driver hit the accelerator instead of the brake accidentally. no injuries. the dmv shut down for the rest of the day after this but lit reopen tomorrow morning. and an hour earlier a pickup truck crashed into a house in prince george's county on croom road. driver was trapped for about 40 minutes while firefighters and paramedics and the collapse team worked to get him out. after the man was preede he was taken to a trauma center. investigators say it is not clear whether he suffered any medical emergency that caused this accident. and an hour earlier than that, around 9:00, ups truck collided with a car in charles county on route 225 near the intersection

of route 301 and la plata. a nearby bank, gas station and restaurant were evacuated because of a fuel spill from the ups truck. the area had to be blocked off until the accident was cleared and that caused a major traffic jam. the driver of the car was taken to a hospital with injuries not expected to be life threatening. the truck driver was treated at the scene for minor injuries. clinical trials for a swine flu vaccine will get under way in a few weeks. the manufacturers are hoping to have it ready for the fall. the makers of the vaccine have run football problems. tracy pots has our report. >> reporter: pharmaceuticals, only american manufacturer producing swine flu vaccine, has brought it ready go but are made from cell cultures and that's not approved. for theu.s., vaccines must be grown in eggs. but another company novartis reports its eggs are yielding less than half the active ingredients they need. >> right now we immediate the

virus vein to catch up. >> reporter: health officials insist that will have no impact on delivering the first doses. >> we still feel we are on track to have a vaccine ready by mid october. >> reporter: the cdc fears once students head back to school the virus could begin to spread. quickly. unlike the regular flu this virus is taking its toll on young people. so educators are getting ready for what could be a mass immunization campaign in schools. >> the children obviously tremendously high risk. we want schools to be centers of the community anyway. and so schools can be part of the solution we want to do that. >> reporter: pregnant women are also at risk. the cdc says they should plan on getting shots. this we can the government set aside more than $800 million to stock up on vaccine ingredients and president obama's designated $1.8 billion in emergency funds just to get ready for what he has called a looming threat. tracy pots, news4. most of that vaccine is

space station colleagues. this is the first time in history they are now 13 -- there are 13 people onboard the iss. increased numbers are possible because the station was expanded earlier this year. billie holliday was a jazz pioneer. a vocalist that had very few peers. on this day 50 years ago she died. as a child, billie holliday lived in baltimor today that city -- rededicated a statue in her honor. the statue originally was built in 1985 in a neighborhood that once attracted entertainers like holiday. the memorial was unveiled again today with the addition of two panels. one shows a newborn baby. the other shows a lynched man, reference to holiday's ballad. the famous one. "strange fruit." it was one of the first anti-racism songs in american popular music.

a single mom in new jersey is hoping to bake her way out of foreclosure. the woman has to come up with more than $2,500 by next week. she is halfway there. thanks to her bake sale. >> reporter: angela logan is whipping up a way to fight foreclosure on her home by baking these apple cakes. >> my goal is to fill 100 cakes in ten days. i sold 42 cakes and i have 50 some odd cakes to go. >> reporter: she is calling them her mortgage apple cakes. $40 each. trying to raise a little over $2,500 in the next nine days to

her name is kelly hilldebrand. they met because the female hilldebrand was on facebook and she decided to see if there were any other kelly hilldebrands. she found just one. they started corresponding and then they met in person. three weeks late and engaged before the year was up. and they say they ask all the time if they might possibly be related. they thought of that. so they checked back 250 years and no, they are notrelated. and they have just moved in together. they say that the only complication they have right now is mail. since they don't know which kelly the piece of mail is meant for, they both open everything. which is cool because that way they have to be careful. strange mail coming in. we wish them well. that's our broadcast for now.
