evening news," in the anchor chair for some of the most important stories of the 20th century. dan rather says that cronkite never lost the drive he had during his early days as an intrepid war correspondent. >> he never ceased being a reporter. i touched on this before. i think the public recognized this. walter loved reporting. he loved the news. a passion for it. >> here in washington rather's colleagues and viewers paused to remember the man fondly dubbed the most trusted man in america. >> a giant of journalism, called affectionately uncle walter, known as competitor to a former nbc news bureau chief. >> i saw him the most really at the space shots. because that was really one of his first loves. he was almost child like in covering the space program. like a little kid. so excited by -- what we were doing. >> when neil armstrong took that

step. >> oh, boy. >> i remember him saying on the air, golly, that was, a word you hardly ever heard a journalist say. >> davis remembers cronkite for what he did not say as much as for what he did. but the most memorable moment of lost objectivity, came over the vietnam war. >> to say that we are mired in stalemate, seems the only realistic if unsatisfactory conclusion. >> president johnson, knowing how trusted walter cronkite was, said if i have lost walter cronkite i have lost the people. and that was pretty much true. >> whether it was watergate, civil rights movement, walter was always there. his broadcasting roots reaching back to washington, d.c. >> he started here as a news director at channel 9. the wtop. and -- and then went from there to cbs. but it impacted washington was enormous. whenever walter came to town.

walter was the guy that most tried to m latemulate. this weekend on display at the new newseum, the passing of the most trusted man was the headline. >> his signoff "that's the way it is." >> that's the way it is. and that's the way it is. and that'she way it is. >> more on walter cronkite's love of the space program and the role of bringing that into american homes coming up at 6:15. tacoma park metro station closed for an hour as ntsb tries to figure what caused last month's deadly crash. a stretch of the red lean near the station has been shut down all day. federal investigators try to reconstruct the crash. they're trying to figure out when the driver of the striking train could see the first stop train. shuttle buses are taking red line riders around the area. everything expected to reopen at 7:00 tonight.

hyattsville police arrested a woman on charges of child abuse. making and distributing child pornography. perhaps the most disturbing effort about this was that she was a nanny whom local families trusted to keep their families safe. darcy spencer is live in hyattsville with more. darcy. >> come werely, the nanny was y kimberly, i had a chance to talk to the mothers involved. they had no idea. one mom concerned about her young son shown some very graphic images. >> it is sick. like i said there is not a word i can fiend to nd to describe i. it is appalling. >> this woman who doesn't want to be identified said that her two children were victims of a nanny facing asalt in child porn charges. >> what do you think about the fact she is under arrest now?

>> relieved. very relieved. i hope justice is served. >> hyattsville police arrested the 22-year-old nanny this week and charged her with the abuse of three boys and girls, ages 5, 10, 12. she worked for the families as a nancy. >> i guess you can't judge somebody by what they look like. she just didn't seem like that type oon rspe. >> policatsa sy hed sthweho the children pornographic images on a computer and transmilted pornographic images of the children over the internet using a live web cam. >> i do believe some of the images were viewed using a web-cam. the suspect is from bosnia. we believe possibly some of the images were transmitted to that country. >> the mom we spoke to said she called police in june after her children brought the abuse to her attention. she says harnich came to the united states on a work visa through an agency called cultal care. >> you can't trust anybody. you can't. and that's why i say thank god

for my mom. because i wouldn't put my kidd with anybody else. >> i just think a terribly tragic, sad, unfortunate incident. it serves a a reminder to all parents you can never be too careful in the protection of your children. >> hyattsville police say they only located three victims. but they want to make sure there aren't anymore. they're asking any one who may have employed the nanny. give them a call. 301-985-5060. the nanny is in jail. prince george's county detention center on $350,000 bond. reporting live from hyattsville. darcy spencer, news 4. darcy, thank you for reporting there. developing story now out of northeast washington tonight. a man has been found dead in his apartment under mysterious circumstances. fire fighters went to the apartment on fort lincoln drive late this morning for a medical call and found a small fire and body of a deceased adult male.

d.c. fire station was dedicated today to the city's first african-american fire chief. the chief burton johnson joined the d.c. fire department in 1943. he was assigned to engine company 4 which at the time was a segregated all black station. he made his way up the ranks and served as chief from 1973, 1978. this afternoon engine 4 station on sherman avenue was named after chief johnson. still ahead tonight. fire fighters take action in the whack wake of a tragic fire that left a young boy dead. they want to make sure it doesn't happen again. our coverage of the death of news legend walter cronkite continues. neil armstrong talking about a man who loved the space program. and brought that small step for man right into americans' homes. update on the pope's condition following surgery and his prognosis r recovery.

a 17-year-old boy clingg to life after a fire in his building. s younger brother was ll.edhi the firertta sed yesterday ontaing in the riverdale sti of prince geoe's county. today fire fighters went dro door to try to prevent this tragedy from ever happening again. megan mcgrath has the story. fire fighters go door to door. the program part of an outreach program in communities touched by tragedy. tragic the only word to describe what happened at the oak ridge apartments last night. two children, age 5 and 7, were trapped inside a smoke filled apartment. investigators say the kids were home alone. as neighbors tried frantically to get inside, the father came back. and realized what was happening. >> he was frantic. when he got here. he was -- running and saying, that's my apartment, that's my

apartment. my kids are in there. and you ow, everybody was just -- at that point, everybody was just like, converging on the apartment. trying to get in. >> investigators say the father was cooking in the kitchen and for some unknown reason he left the apartment locng the front door behind him. the food started a small fire. the apartment filled with smoke. >> food on the stove. pretty much burned itself out. by the time fire fighters arrived. generated a tremendous amount of smoke. >> the 5-year-old boy died at an area hospital. his 7-year-old brother in critical condition. the father sustained minor injuries trying to break into the apartment. it is unclear at this point if he will face charges for leaving the children home alone. in riverdale, megan mcgrath. news 4. still ahead. astronauts get out to stretch their legs. that's short for international space station. 40 years after the most famous space walk of all time. steve has your weekend

indonesian police are trying to figure which terror network was behind a pair of suicide attacks on two american luxury hotels. the attacks happened yesterday at jw marriott and ritz-carlton in jakarta. eight people were killed. 50 injured including eight americans. investigators are working with medical teams to identify the remans of the attackers.

they're hoping that may lead them to the group behind the bombings. pope benedict xvi celebrated mass today despite undergoing surgery yesterday to treat a broken wrist. 82-year-old pontiff isn vacation in northern italy. you can see the cast. officials say the pope broke his wrist after suffering from a minor fall. the cast will stay on for a month. then he is expected to make a full recovery. we are joined now for a check of the weekend weather. what a beautiful day. >> i love it. it is not like july. so, it's really comfortable. nice and sunny. temperatures in the 80s. so, we're going to repeat it again tomorrow. >> oh. >> just one more day. however, we are going to see changes as we head into the workweek. at least for tomorrow. again, just look today. plenty of sunshine out there. very low humidity. that's the key. let's go outside. and talk about your forecast. here is what it looks like out there. yes there are a couple of cloud making their way across the area. but for the most part.

third pair of brothers both taken in the first round of the nfl draft. today the duo hit a milestone. hosting their first football camp for kidd at dunbar. the two helped coach the fundamentals of football to campers. on the field at their alma matter. and covered the basics with d.c. kidd. also took team to compete with one another. apparently they do this a lot. the brothers prepared to head to their separate nfl training camps. for the time being they were relishing the opportunity to compete over one another. those two are great. said when they were little they used to compete for who could take the longest shower. >> competitive. >> speaking of úg
