track to try to get to the bottom of last month's deadly crash. there's word of another serious train collision this one in california. good evening, everyone. i'm kimberly suitors. we begin with that developing story in san francisco. two light rail trains have collided causing what officials areausing one of the largest casualty incidents in years. 44 people were taken who hospitals. one train barreled into a stopped train this afternoon on the city's yuni transit line. the operator of the striking train they say appeared to be asleep or passed out. a former transit worker told "the washington post" that intermittent track circuit failures had been affecting that system. investigators are trying to figure out what led to the crash that killed nine people. darcy spencer live in tacoma at the metro station with more. what are they finding out?

>> kimberly, officials know there was some sort of track malfunction the day of the crash but still don't know why. >> investigators spent the day on the tracks today still searching for a cause. the takoma metrostration reopened at 7:00 tonight i've 12-hour shut down as the national transportation safety board continued its investigation of last month's train collision that claimed nine lives and left dozens injured. >> they need to find out what caused the wreck. so i don't like being inconvenienced but i understand it that it may be necessary. >> the ntsb conducted tests on the tracks. shuttle buss were used to route riders around the closure. investigators continue to reenact the crash, testing to determine when the metro operator might have seen the trains stopped on the tracks. prior tests indicated the striking train began braking 35

525 feet before the rear end collision. >> i understand why they would want to do it, take the necessary precautions to ensure that something like this doesn't happen again. >> it sounds like everybody thought it was real simple and now we're all kind of saying it's a big deal. more going on. so hopefully, they'll resolve those problems and we won't see an accident like this for a long time. >> officials have said the detection system apparently failed and should have alerted the operator there was a train sitting on the tracks and avoid the crash. officials say they've not been able to determine why the circuit failed that d and continues to fail now. >> hope they come up with some positive results to figure out why and what happened so it won't happen again. >> the metro is warning riders to be prepared for continued delays 30 minutes or possibly more. trains are still operating in that slower manual mode during this investigation. reporting live from northwest washington, darcy spencer, news4. >> sounds like the people you

talked to are pretty understanding why there are so many delays. >> they certainly are and want to make sure they find out a cause and get it fixed so it doesn't happen again. >> thank you. tennessee authorities have taken a suspect into custody in connection with the murders of six people. the sheriff of lincoln county described it as one of the worst crimes the county has ever seen. five victims were discovered in two different homes in the county. a sixth body was found in a business in huntsville, al bham. police have not said how the victims died, but they have determined that some of them were related. friends, colleagues and americans from all walks of life are remembering the life of walter cronkite tonight. cronkite died last night at the age of 92 and spent nearly two decades in the anchor chair at cbs news during some of the most tumultuous times of the 20th century. scientific achievements, wars, scandals, he reported on it all.

he had a calming presence and a rich baritone voice. soon uncle walter as he was known was known also as the most trusted man in america. former nbc news nightly anchor tom brokaw recently talked about why cronkite was so well regarded. >> he was a quintessential american. he came from the heartland. he wasn't flashy one way or the other and his reporting was straightforward. >> cronkite got his on air start here in washington in one of his last interviews, he spoke of joining wtoptv, the newly minted cbs affiliate in d.c. in 1951. >> well, i went over and joined cbs. they bought their first television station in washington. and they needed somebody on the air. everybody else was busy covering the war or doing their radio shows. and i was the only one free to go into television.

three boys and girls ages 5, 10 and 12. she worked for several area families as a nanny. police say she showed the children pictures and sent porn graphic images of the children over the internet using a live web cam. the mother of the two of the children spoke to news4. >> i guess you can't judge somebody by what they look like. she just didn't seem like that type of person. >> police want anyone who ever hired harnisch to watch their children to call police at 301-985-5060. a 7-year-old boy is still clinging to life tonight after an apartment fire claimed the life of his 5-year-old brother. a memorial for the boys has formed outside the oakridge apartment complex in riverdale. this fire started in their apartment yesterday afternoon. authorities say their father was cooking and for some reason left them home alone. the ensuing kitchen fire filled

the apartment with toxic smoke. it's not clear whether the father will face charges. authorities believe they found the body of a man who disappeared while trying to swim across the potomac river. the silver spring man was last seen tuesday near the old angler's inn in potomac, maryland. this morning, fishermen found a body about a half mile from there. they say the body matches the description of the missing swimmer. still ahead tonight, quarantined on vacation. 65 americans stuck inside a chinese hotel because of swine flu concerns. and it sounds like something out of a horror movie, giant squid attacking scuba divers. one woman tells her terrifying story. and the well-known ad campaign that seriously hit a little too close to home for one family. keith? >> well, good evening, everyone. it was a beautiful dale today. now, the question is, does the lovely weather last through

changing things up as we head into monday and tuesday and wednesday thursday, friday for that matter. let's go to the maps and talk about what's going on. it is mostly clear. going to be a really pretty night. since the air is so dry, temperatures will drop into the 50s in the suburbs which is well below average for this time of year. here's what's happening right now. 71 degrees, partly cloudy. we do have that nor will i flow at 7:00 today. we hit 73. this morning 68. we'll drop below that number by tomorrow morning. here is the deal. again, 71 here in the district. 72 at quantico. we're down into the low 60s in the shenandoah valley, into the 50s and possibly the low fists. dew points in the low 50s. so the air is really dry and comfortable. the dew points have really dropped in the last 24 hours thanks to a cool front across the area. 71 right now locally. 62 out in cincinnati. 65 in chicago.

you can see it's pretty cool from the district all the way back into the ohio valley and up towards michigan. all right. so there's the frontal band that came through yesterday. it did bring us a few light rain showers and isolated thunderstorms. now the front is offshore. the big player comes tomorrow, will be this area of higher pressure. it's going to build into the region. we'll see lots of sunshine. it will continue to create that northerly flow which will continue to bring in comfortable weather. then we're going to start to change things up. tomorrow the front slides offshore. as we head into monday and tuesday, a wave of low pressure will start to ride up the frontal band. as that happens, we're going to start to see more of an onshore flow that brings in low level moisture. we'll start to feel more humid and have enough instability in the upper levels of the atmosphere where we start 0 see showers and thunderstorms. this will be the trend for most of the week. enjoy tomorrow because tomorrow looks great. here's the situation for tomorrow morning. mostly clear, cooler in the suburbs. temperatures there in the 50s.

here in the district i think temperatures will drop down to about 65 degrees. during the afternoon hours, again, it's going to be a beautiful day just like today. very crisp, very comfortable. temperatures in the 80s. warm and delightful. low humidity and then we start to change things up for monday and for tuesday and for wednesday. that's when we can start to see some showers move into the area. temperatures will drop a little bit for monday and tuesday. not cold, just a little bit cooler. lower 80s with a chance of showers, and then we start to increase the humidity by the time we get to the middle of the week. >> not so bad. >> with thunderstorms. >> thank you, steve. come up in sports, a self-proclaimed geezer leads the en.tisop lind
