i'm kimberly suiters. arth pis was brepin ug p when hoas killed outside a me in theow les lsl ian i sterling.of collegnt s detung hdetios theti ew4s heri ted tis to keep things under control and never expected this. michael flynn has our report. >> reporter: detectives at the scene of a deadly shooting in sterling. 19-year-old man was shot and killed after leaving a party at this house, just before 3:00 am. investigators say there was an argument in the street between three partygoers and that's where the victim was shot. >> it was just a party. people were having a lot of fun. >> reporter: the young man who hosted the birthday party asked us not to show his face. the shooting happened minutes after he told everyone to go home. the host rushed to his backyard and that's where the victim had collapsed with a gunshot wound to his neck. >> i took off my shirt. i put it on his wound. we prayed.

we did our best. >> reporter: police have charged 20-year-old guillermo elvarada and 26-year-old raheed nurse with murder. nurse is the gun, detectives say, who pulled out the gun. it happens here on lowes island boulevard in sterling, upscale single family homes on one side and town homes on the other side of the street. people who live in this neighborhood are stunned. >> we have virtually no crime. reporter: she woke up to what she thought were fireworks. >> three or four loud pops. >> reporter: the person who hosted the party did not know the victor the suspects. >> hoping he would be okay. unfortunately not. my condolences to his family. >> reporter: michael flynn, news 4. >> police have not yet released

the victim's identity. both suspects are being held without bond tonight. u.s. military is denouncing video of an american soldier captured in afghanistan. that video has now surfaced on the internet. private bowe bergdahl misses his family and says he doesn't know when he will be able to go home. he disappeared three weeks ago after walking off his base three weeks ago. he was captured after lagging behind a patrol. that conflicts with military account that is he left the base with three afghans. you can hear his captors prompting him to deliver a message in the video. >> i assume how these people live and function, very independent state and very independent people. >> the u.s. is calling the video propaganda that violates u.s. law. before lawmakers done on

vacation in august, any delay suits republicans, betting the president's plans will fall apart if democrats go home and hear from their constituents. they argue the plan is too expensive. congressional budget office said this past week that health care reform may not contain costs even after spending a trillion dollars. the white house is playing that down. >> i think what we'll see is private insurers will be competitive. they will have innovative practices, compete for benefit plans that may be more attractive. that's what we want in a marketpla marketplace. >> democrats are still fighting amongst themselves. lawmakers are trying to turn five competing plans into one that will work. a man who got into a shootout with an off-duty u.s. capital police officer is now facing attempted murder charges. police say bedar assam was randomly shooting in a parking lot. they saw the shooting and

exchanged gunfire with him. the suspect is in serious condition. a 12-year-old girl in a nearby apartment was grazed by a stray bullet. a bullet also struck the police officer and he has since been released from the hospital. this is an increasing problem in our area. more and more people are reporting their bikes stolen. victims say they're doing everything right and their bikes are still disappearing. for many, it's their only mode of transportation. darcy spencer is live in adams morgan tonight with more. darcy, what can be done about this? >> reporter: hi, kimberly. as you mentioned, some people actually use their bikes to get to work and back. some of the victims say they are doing everything right, equipping their bike with his some of the best locks on the market. but experts say locks can be broken. m flemming is test driving a new bike at city bikes. a few months ago, his 15-year-old mountain bike was stolen outside the dupont circle metro station. >> it's odd that anybody would take a chance to break through a

lock at a metro station in order to get their hands on that bike. it just wasn't that luable. >> reporter: in d.c., in northern virginia, police are warning about an increase in theft. andrew says he caught someone in the acof cutting the lock on his bike two weeks ago. >> i was at a friend's house, and swimming and peeked over the wall to make sure everything was okay, and saw them going at the bike lock with a grinder. >> reporter: those familiar with the problem say it's similar to auto theft, chop shops in other major cities where they're resold. >> it goes up and down the east coast. someone will steal a bike in d.c. and ship it to new york, baltimore or philadelphia. it will go to a chop shop, people will put it apart, put it together as a new bike and sell it. >> reporter: try not to leave your bike out overnight. >> make sure that your wheels

are secure, because we do have people coming in, who have their whole bike stolen and people who have just lost the wheels. >> reporter: a bike shop salesman will tell you there's no foolproof locks. one victim says his wheels were stolen outside a church, even though it was secured with a kryptonite lock. >> i made sure i secured my bike and was shocked to come out and see it gone. these are one of the best locks you can get. this is what the police recommend, a u-lock. >> reporter: arlington county police are handing out these flyers, warning them about the increase in bike theft, urging them to use those so-lled u locks. as we've seen, even though you have the lock on, once you leave your bike, there's always that chance you'll never see it again. darcy spencer, news 4. back to you, kimberly. >> darcy, thank you. still ahead tonight, remembering walter cronkite. preparations are under way to say good-bye to the news legend.

daughter promises to raise those children as her own. the florida couple was murdered earlier this month. ashley marcum says she and her husband plan to raise the children as was her mother wish. they will move back into the house where the murders took place. it has new doors, new locks and a security gate. a moment of silence at the tour de france held in honor of a spectator who died yesterday. the 61-year-old woman was hit by a motorcycle involved in the race. one official said she had been seen crossing the road many times before she was struck. two others were injured by the same motorcycle, but they are expected to be just fine. the spectator's death was the first fatal accident on the tour sie a child died back in 2002. still ahead, toilet trouble in space. what astronauts do when their bathroom is out of order. and what a beautiful weekend. will it last into the workweek? steve is in with the forecast teafth. bakrete ññ?wrwr q 7,

about your upcoming workweek. it's still lovely out there. lots of sunshine. a few clouds moving through. temperatures still quite comfortable. 82 degrees right now in the beltway, and the dew point still very low for this time of year. right now, 82. again, a southerly flow. the winds are already starting to shift. today we hit 83. tomorrow we'll stay generally in that neighborhood. all right. temperature wise, here's what's happening. 82 in the beltway, 79 in martinsburg. temperatures overo the next couple of hours generally in the upper 70s. dew points are still very low. numbers will start to climb over the next couple of days as the winds start to go southeasterly. much cooler from cincinnati through chicago. they are well below average this time of year. here is the satellite image. you can see a few clouds moving overhead. plenty in the way of cloud coverage offshore. this is where our weather will be coming from over the next couple of days. there's a big bubble of high pressure out in the atlantic.

and that will create this southwesterly wind flow, that will start to push tropical moisture into the area. and little disturbances, little ripples move across the atmosphere, we'll see the threat of showers and thunderstorms. there's a frontal band offshore, eventually it will start to backtrack, push back toward the mid atlantic states and northeast. and disturbances will ride along this frontal band, keeping us in active pattern starting tomorrow. futurecast again, that frontal band. we've been under the influence of high pressure. this high will start to race up toward the north. the front will start to push back into the area and then all of the moisture from the tropics start to push into the region. the humidity will start to climb. each and every day, we're going to have at least a chance of showers and thunderstorms. not a washout, but keep the umbrellas on stand by so the humidity will be going up and temperatures will hover in the low to mid 80s. here is the situation, then. for this evening, partly cloudy skies out there. a few clouds. nice and mild.
