virginia says there will be no rest for the weary on the interstate. 18 rest stops in virginia will close for good in less than an hour. the latest of belt tighten frlg rich mopd monday but there's concerns the millions of savings will come at the cost of safety. darcy has the latest. >> reporter: virginia transportation officials say it costs about $500,000 a year to run each one of these rest stops. and in these tight budget times something has got to be cut. but many are truly concerned this will cost lives. at the i-95 rest stop in de city, the barrels are in place to block off the entrance starting at midnight, even the vending machines have been taken out. this is among the 18 rest stops in virginia that are closing as of tuesday morning. >> it's really sad, especially if you're traveling with a family, it's going to make it more of a challenge and more difficult for travelers. >> many travelers are against

the closures. they say when you've been on the road for long periods of time, you need a safe convenient place to pull over. >> you may have a situation where, you know, if you're going to cut these rest stops down, that you may have some more accidents on the roads. >> new york isn't doing things like that and we have enough budget problem, you know? terrible to be doing that down here. we want to come visit. is virginia closed to tourists? >> virginia is closing the stops to help seal a multi-million dollar budget gaps, but could cost live, forcing drivers to stay on the road. >> this is a safety issue for the state of virginia. if you get a major accident with a truck, a tan drem truck, you could have a lot of people killed. >> virginia governor kim taken supports commercializing the rest stops to allow businesses to come in. >> you come up to a rest stop and see it's that well taken care of and attract people, not just rest at the rest stop but

a moving van that ran a stop sign crashed sending four victims to the hospital in critical condition. five others were taken to the hospital by ambulance. a group of horrified witnesses risked their lives to save a woman and her two young children from a burning car. the car burnt into flames after crashing in milwaukee, wisconsin, yesterday, two off-duty firefighters and an off-duty police officer were among the rescuers who freed

4-year-old boy. he suffered burns on a third of his body but is expected to survive. the watergate hotel hits the auction block tomorrow. alex cooper auctioneers will start accepting bids for the hotel. it's been closed since 2004 after being purchased from d.c. based monument realty. there were plans to develop into condos or redevelop into a luxury hotel. but all that fell through. it is one of the several buildings in the watergate complex. it was made famous of course by the burglary that led to president nixon's resignation. the markets continue declto climb for the sixth strght day. it's closed at the highest close since january 6th. the dow is also on the longest winning streak since april of '70 when it made gaines of seven straight days. still to come, the hidden dangers of frozen food.

after day, it's raining, it's rain, it's raining. look at the dry pattern we have here in washington. there are a few showers out to our west still in the mountains of west virginia, that were few earlier today, up into pennsylvania. what's left of anything that came around washington out to the east and that's it now. they're all gone. fall church, no rain. less than a quarter of an inch of rain for you at fall church. you've got to water the garden, but on the other hands there calvert, luzby, half inch of rain for the nth. look at fredericksburg, folks said fine, had three quartz of an inch of rain. here in northwest washington, nada, nothing. so overnight, louds will move ought, but out to our east, as we go through tomorrow, maybe another scattered shower, eventually we're going to see some more humidity come in so as we get on into late wednesday and thursday. then there's another chance for more needed rain showers.

our friend down in hollywood, over an inch of rain in st. mary's county today while here in washington, nothing. so for the remainder of the night, what's left of it, just cloudy skies. it will be cloudy, warm tomorrow. when you get up, temperatures in the mid to high 60s, a bit of humidity, nothing oppressive because of all the clouds, even though temperatures will get up into the 80s, woents feel too bad, just a chance, slight chance of a few showers. the air quality tomorrow, code yellow. a lot of clouds tomorrow evening, anything for showers will be hit and miss variety, just no sign of a good steady soaking rain coming n 75 to 80 degrees. who would have imagined a month ago, we would be saying 2 would be nice to get a nice cool steady soaking rain after all of the wet weather we had up until june 23 is when that pattern changed. hit and miss variety scattered showers. temperatures remaining for the most part below average as we
