could have serious consequences. the defendant is a doctor. the charges, drug related. on the defense, the doctor's wife. she adds she be photographed out of focus. >> this has destroyed his practice and destroyed our lives and for what reason? i don't know. >> reporter: the doctor's wife out today to try to clear her husband's name. dr. eric greenberg in court in montgomery county facing misdemeanor drug possession charges. his wifdiandn't wt her husband to be remembered by a't police g shot. so today she brought their wedding photos to court. they were married nine years ago. >> it is like a witch-hunt to take his -- to take his license and prevent him from practicing medicine. >>eporter: it was last april that police raided dr. greenberg's home and office on old georgetown road. they say that they found evidence of cocaine and drug

paraphernalia. to your knowledge has he ever done anything wrong with drugs? >> absolutely not. >> reporter: the doctor's wife says she doesn't want her husband to be remembered just by the controversial documents generated in this case. so she brought a stack of testimonial letters from patients to court today. one describes dr. greenberg as a blast from the past. the real ma i could. >> the patients say its best. they think he is a brilliant doctor and he is caring and he's -- he's sensitive. he's got a photographic memory. >> reporter: the doctor's wife, jackie, was also charged with misdemeanor drug charges but was offered a diversionary program. pat, back to you. >> pat collins, thank you, pat. almost two dozen students from the d.c. area quarantined

in china this evening because of concerns about the swine flu. the students are from d.c. from schools across the d.c. area. and including walter johnson high and montgomery county. tonight they are being quarantined in beijing. julie carey is following the story and is in the newsroom. >> as many as eight of the students have also shown symptoms of h1n1 or swine flu including a montgomery county teen whose test results came back positive today. the local parents say they are comforted by the care and attention the teens are getting during the difficult time. many of the student group landed in beijing they were whisked into quarantine at a hotel. one of the male students in the hotel had a fever as they got off the plane and was stringent precautions in place in china that meant quarantine. and video taken of potomac 16-year-old natalie cheney that attends the national cathedral school and spoke to reporters for british television. >> i think they are take good care of us. i spoke with some of the my friends in the hospital. they said they have been treated really well and said they are

receiving american food and have a tv. >> reporter: soon after that interview natalie developed symptoms and was hospitalized. and today her parents learned she has a confirmed case of h1n1. >> we were surprised because initially she really -- she didn't feel bad. but now i'm starting to hear it on the phone she is coughing and she has a fever. so she was very disappointed because that means another five days of quarantine where she thought she was going to get out soon. so it is a blow to her emotionally but i know she is getting good care. that's the most important thing. >> reporter: natalie's parents say the positive test results bring transfer to a better salcipeesiz specializes in fectusious diseases and puts her back in touch with other sick students from her group at the first hospital she was isolated. >> it is hard because we talked to her on the phone and, you know, at this point she, you know, getting emotional. she's not had a lot of contact. you know, you are a world away.

there's not much you can do except give verbal comfort. >> reporter: the 22 students from maryland and district of columbia were selected through a program based at the university of maryland and it works with pr fon-non-prr-it organizatn in friteosng fostering cultural exchanges and the american high schoolers pay only their airfare. the institute's director says even though the students have been quarantined they will be able to extend their stay and finish their trip in china if they choose. >> i hope she will stay and get to see china like she wanted to. it is an opportunity of a lifetime for these kids. and they are there at -- as guests of the chinese government and, you know, it is once in a lifetime. >> undoubtedly returned with stories that will last a lifetime. coming up on "news4 at 6:00," you will hear fromnother local student from walter johnson high school who was also among those hospitalized. back to you now. >> julie carey, thank you. earlier this year, a group of students from silver spring were quarantined in china because of swine flu fears. the students are from the barry school and traveled in may and

were quarantined a week. news4 was there as they returned home and reunited with their families at the airport. none of the students ended up contracting the virus. fire investigators are trying to figure out what started a blaze at a townhouse in lorton. the house is in the 9600 block of hagle circle. flames were seen shooting from the roof. they knocked the fire down in 15 minutes. no one was home at the time and no one was injured. p. the watergate hotel part of the complex made fame business a presidential scandal. failed to attract any competitive bids at the auction today. the hotel property was then taken back by the lender who holds a $40 million note it. but residents and businesses of the famous complex were hoping the hotel will one day be back in business. here is tom sherwood with that story. >> the hotel is part of a six building complex and many still see a big future there. inside the walls of the

it is happening in damascus near the frederick county line. it is at route 27 closed and more information on this story when it becomes available to us. virginia gubernatorial candidate bob mcdonald says transportation will become his number one priority if elected in november. mcdonald unveiled his transportation plan in arlington today and supports more tolls and more hov lanes and boosting the speed limit on some highways to 70 miles an hour and selling state-owned liquor stores and using the revenue for transportation projects. >> new idea. and that's going -- there will be opposition to that. letting northern virginia keep part of the sales tax revenue up here, there will be others opposed to that. northern virginia has got to be take care of. we have to fund these roads here because the prosperity here helps the entire state. >> mcdonald also wants to dip into $900 million of stimulus money reserved for 2011.

he says the money should be used now for transportation projects. they wl they will take on democraticil candidate creigh deeds in venomb . s' e are some of creigh ed plans. bring high speed rail t virginia. he also wants toanxp ed traditional freight and s.ssengerail o reduceanus rh hour traffic through telecommuting and flex time tax credits. and no rest for the weary in parts of virginia. 18 rest stops along highways in the commonwealth are now closed, including one in i-95, dale city. one more rest stop along i-66 in manassas is going to be shutting down in september. and the closings will save the state $9 million a year. the save lgs help close a $2.5 billion budget shortfall in the tranortation funding. the rest stops closed today despite objections from state and local leaders who appealed to congress for financial help. president obama is insisting the health care plan would make medical care more affordable. at the white house this afternoon. the president said the plan also

in idaho, while the parents of the u.s. soldier captured in afghanistan pleaded for privacy a small town of hope and prayed. this morning on "today," president obama sounded optimistic about the soldier's safe return. craig melvin has our report. >> reporter: president obama told nbc's meredith vieira he and the military are working for e return of 23-year-old army

harvard is no longer facing charges. and the city of caridge, massachusetts, is apologizing for what it callsabre rlett t e deint ganry tes was arrested last thursday after a woman cnralled police saying she saw two men trying to break into a home. gates was just returning from a trip and the front door of his house was jammed. so he tried to force it open. when police confronted him, gates yelled at the officers and accused them of racial bias and the officers wanted gates to prove he lived at the home and charged and -- and charged him with disorderly conduct. turning to the weather his -- it has been cooler and dry. >> it is still dry. we have a bit of humidity. the 80s. yesterday southern maryland over an inch of rain. not a drop right around washington. outside right now, not a drop either. even though clouds are building up. and the reason is the air is stable and we have a little area of low pressure off the coast. another one out in ohio and in between even though we have

humidity and lot of clouds. nothing to really cause the air to lift enough to cause showers and thundershowers and that really could use so far an inch of -- mine, one degree cooler than average for the entire year. early this morning, macon, georgia, was down to 56 degrees for a record low. look at the temperatures now around the east. we are at 84 degrees. buffalo, 65 degrees. boston, 60 -- what is this, this is summer. once again, they are getting cold rains up to our north with the dew points into the 50s. and there you can see the area of low pressure off the coast and there is a little dip in the jet but, unfortunately, it is more our north. the mechanism to cause any of the showers, thundershowers, and to form in over us just isn't there. here is where they are. i will get out of the way. there you can see lightning, earlier severe thunderstorm warnings out for spots like grant county but that's where those showers and thundershowers are staying. out of the mountains of west virginia, another batch. out to the west of pittsburgh

you see them on the back roads and when you are heading to the beach. the roadside stands where farmers bring the crops directly to you from the nearby fields. all have you do is pull over and stock up. tonight it is going green celebrates food we are going to get in the car and head to anne arundel county. >> half a dozen. >> reporter: regg's produce stand sits on the main road to deal. popular destination for boaters. who pull over and fill up on his sweet corn, ripe tomatoes, perfumed melons. there's no better cantaloupe than here. >> for years we stopped along the way and got our fresh vegetables. >> reporter: his family has been farming here for generations. since the first nutwell arrived in colonial days. >> indentured servant sailing up

brady spends his weekends selling the family's corn out of the back of a pickup. he picks the crop at 6:00 each morning. sounds like a chore. but to brady, farming is a sweet passion. >> i love farming. it is so peaceful. yeah. i mean, it is really like -- you can -- being out in the field by yourself. only bad part is the lonely part. besides that -- in the end, i mean, people enjoying something you worked so hard to created is just -- it is something. >> reporter: and brady's corn is really something. gordon comes out from bethesda. >> can't beat the sweet corn out of here. it is as good as anything. throw it on the grill, cook it in the husk. and nothing better than that yoyp young brady will take home $500 for his efforts. roadside stands help keep our farms and our farmers alive. but it is not a living. >> $3, please.

welcome back to our second half hour of "news4 at 5:00. i'm pat lawson muse. >> i'm wendy rieger. jim handly is off tonight. >> police in loudoun county identified the teenager murdered at a house party over the weekend. 19-year-old brian vadarti of centreville. shot to death early sunday morning outside of a home in an upskate sterling community. sheriff's deputies sayalverato killed him after an argument. the man had an altercation shortly after he asked everybody to leave the house. he did not know the victim or suspects. surprising testimony in the banita jacks trial today. the prosecution called a witness who says the mother let her young children smoke marijuana. niouin frrks is on trialllkihe r daughters that rangedn i age from 3 i years. yesterday a friend of jacks'

boyfriend testified she let the youngest girls 3 and 4 years old smoke pot. the witness said she saw jacks laughing while the girls smoked. u.s. marshals discovered the four girls' bodies in january of 2008 while serving an ection in jacks' hoefrmgts man and his two dogs were in a jeep that overturned on beach drive in the district today. it happened around noon just south of military road northwest. firefighters had to use the jaws of life to get the man out of the flipped vehicle. he suffered serious injuries and had to be flown to the hospital by a u.s. park police. helicopter. the dogs were not injured. fire firts say they took care of the dogs and fed them biscuits during the rescue. important vote tonight over whher or not to bring baseball to loudoun county. chris gordon has more on this story from the county. chris? >> wendy, the board of supervisors imposed 50 conditions on the proposed baseball stadium to protect the environment and they said that no public money could be used to

finance the stadium and yet, this afternoon, here at the loudoun county government center there was a heated debate and strong opposition. some loudoun county superviseors argued that another public hearing should be held on the proceeds posed baseball stadium. knowing that any delay at this point could kill the project. supporters of the stadium pressed for a yes vote now. >> when all the changes they are putting in place, environmentally, the impact is not as dramatic as what would have been. >> reporter: the baseball stadium would seat 5500 fans and will be located in ashburn, virginia, and at route 28 and route 7. opposes argue it will create a traffic nightmare. >> i received a lot of feedback from my constituents saying that they are very worried about what that is going to do to traffic. >> reporter: former baseball hall of famers made public appearances in support of the baseball stadium and a team that would play in the atlantic league. after years of planning, it came down to this vote.

>> reporter: the supervisored passed the special exception for the baseball stadium. six votes in favor, two object opposed. >> i think loudoun county will be very proud of the project we will bring. >> baseball will be played. >> we are shooting for opening day may 2011. >> reporter: the stadium and two office buildgs were just the beginning. the developers want to build 1400 residential units, apartments, and condos, performing arts and cultural center. a nature preserve and a fire stion, and hotels. >> our proposal includes bringing those amenities by building the community, you know, live, work and play community all around this ballpark theme. >> reporter: brooks robinson is the hall of famer on the advisory committee to this new project. not frank robinson who is also hall of famer. brooks robinson pushing for the

project. the new baseball stadium could be a source of pride because local high schools are so big, graduations have been held in neighboring fairfax county. now with the stadium, graduates could be at home. we are live at the loudoun county government center. back to you in the studio. >> chris gordon, thanks. authorities in stafford, virginia, they are calling this 89-year-old robbery victim a brave man. several suspects tried to rob the man while he was in his house and he scared them away after he pulled a gun from under his mattress. darcy spencer with the story. >> i think the dait great depiction of the gentleman is very sharp and brave.y brave. verye.e.brav >> reporter: stafford county f' shf'ifers deputies s an if 9-year-old man confronted the fourpe wusscthit a gun inside his house and thwarted a robbery. >> i think it was very brave of him to do what he did, could have usedeadly force. . fear of his li. fe >> reporter: police say the man

that sealed the victim's driveway and chaed him $2,000. the next day they came back. when the man went back inside his house he found three of the suspects trying to ransack his home and trying to steal his safe. that's when he pulled his gun from under the mattress. police say the man had thrown the elderly man to the ground and even the gun didn't seem to scare them at first. >> taunted him for a little while longer and making comments to them like shoot me, old man, that kind of thing. and t hen they eventually left. >> repter: police later caught up with the suspects i tre rhisd chevy pickup truck and were arrested after a short pursuit. they are facing abduction, burglary, theft and assault charges. and the victim did not want to talk to reporters on camera but neighbors say that he did the right thing. >> you think he should have done that? >> yes. he should have got them. should have shot them. if you ask me. i got -- no. wrong.

imagine going on vacation and running into something like this. baboons gone wild. attacking this car and helping themselves to all of the luggage inside. this happened at a safari park in the united kingdom. it was a drill. staff at the park staged the demonstration to show visitors how easily the baboons can pry open a rooftop carrier and mess up your belongings. no one was injured during the drill. the park's manager hopes people will still visit the safari site but leigh their rooftop carriers home.
