friends in the hospital. they said they have been treated real well and said they -- received american food and they have a tv. >> reporter: but soon after that interview, natalie developed symptoms and was hospitalized. and today her parents learned she has a confirmed case of h1n1. >> we were surprised. initially she really didn't feel bad. but now i'm starting to hear it the phone, she is coughing and has a fever. so she was very disappointed because that means another five days of quarantine. she thought she was going to get out soon. so it is -- it is a blow to her ee mowingly. >> reporter: natalie's parents say the positive test results bring transfer to a rcipeed s specind a in ed infectioiseaseusnd a puts her back in touch with other sick students from her group. at the first hospital she was isolated. >> it is hard because we talk to her on the phone and, you know, at this point she is getting a little emotional. she's not had a lot of contact. and, you know, you are -- a world away.

there's not much you can do except give verbal comfort. >> reporter: noreen says all of well by their y b theirsts. >> theyat thore s. atre g ho ial ryll nice. we -- you know, lots of food. >> reporter: the 22 students from maryland and district of columbia were selected through a program based at the university of maryland called the con unusual us institute. ksitor w with a ornot-for-profi exchange. the american high schoolers pay only their airfare. the institute's director says even though the students have been quarantined, they will be able to extend their stay and finish their trip in china if they choose. >> very hopeful talking with their parents, they say i know my child, he or she -- >> reporter: now the parents tell us by their account as many as eight of the students had to be hospitalized. some of them have recovered and been released from the hospital. the chinese group that is sponsoring the trip is paying

for the hospital bills and extended stay if the students decide to take them up on that. that chinese group has provided laptops to all the students quarantined in the hotel to keep them occupied. back to you. >> julie carey in the newsroom. thank you. one person is dead and two are fighting for their lives after a collision near damascus, maryland. it involved a truck truck and stran. happened in the 2800 block of kemp town road near the montgomery county/frederick county line. it is closed at route 27. no word on what caused this. d.c. firefighters had to use the jaws of life to free a man from an overturned jeep today that flipped over around noon. just south of military road northwest. the driver suffers serious injuries and was flown to the hospital by a u.s. park police helicopter. two dogs were in the car but were not injured. firefighters fed them biscuits to keep them calm during the rescue. no word on the cause of that crash. investigators are trying to figure out what sparked a blaze at a town home in lorton this afternoon. it is in the 9600 block of hagel

circle. flames were seen shooting up from the roof before fire crews got there at 2:00 this afternoon. the fire was put out but there was extensive damage to that home and three others but there were no injuries. the u.s. military officials say they are, quote, sparing no effort to find the soldier captured three weeks ago in afghanistan. the taliban is holding army private bo bergdahl in his hometown of haley, idaho. his parents are asking for privacy but say the support for thr son has been overwhelming. leanne gregg has that report tonight. >> reporter: the ribbons are up as they rally around their hometown soldier now a prisoner of war. >> the community is always together and also a there for all of our people. always have been. always will be. >> reporter: president obama told nbc's meredith vieira the u.s. is working for the release of 23-year-old army private bowe bergdahl. >> we are doing everything we can. >> reporter: have you spoken to his family? >> i have not. at this point simply because we want to make sure that before we

will never be able to tell them that i love them again. >> reporter: unexpected capture and the grueling wait for what's neck as this community vows to remain positive. a positive vigil is held wednesday night in honor of bowe who never owned a car and loves to rid his bike. the sheriff suggested people show up to the vigil on a bike. in a separate development in afghanistan, taliban militants carried out a series of attacks in two cities in eastern afghanistan today. the militants targeted three government buildings in the city of gardez. some of the attackers were suicide vests. eight militants and six afghan security officers were killed in the fighting. the attack on u.s. base u.s. and afghan forces were able to capture one of the militants, two others were killed. today the senate agreed to cut off new spending for the f-22 fighter jet programs. there are 187 of the stealth

fighters in the pipeline. 1.75 billion had been set aside for more. today's vote removes that money from the defense policy bill. defense secretary robert gates says the pentagon has enough of the jets. president obama threatened to veto the defense bill if congress ignored the request to terminate that program. resistance has been fierce and because the f-22 has provided thousands of jobs in some lawmakers districts. federal reserve chairman bernanke updated congress on the economy telling lawmakers that recovery efforts are working, slowly. and he predicted the economy are start pulling out next year but it is going to be two years before we see sustained growth. he says at some point the fed will have to raise interest rates to avoid inflation. the watergate hotel part of the complex made famous by presidential scandal in 1972 failed to attract new buyers at an auction today. the hotel property was taken back by tlender that holds $40 million note on it. residents andusinesses hope

it will not be with the caps. capitals goaltender johnson was rehabbing from a hip injury that kept him sidelined during last year's playoff after a frustrating season off the ice he is so ready to go for the start of training camp but will not be with the capitals. the free agent signed a one-year deal to play for the penguins. back on the ice. johnson spent the last four seasons in d.c. could have been the starter last year but played 21 before suffering the hip you ary. until that point he was 12-6-2 with 2.81 goals against average. with three other goaltenders, fighting for roster spots, johnson knew his time could be limited. he will now fight to back up pittsburgh's mark andres. the biggest move the capitals made this offseasons the addition of 37-year-old right winger mike knubel from the flyers. they need ad scoringing wither and got one in. the capitals are so excited about having him on the team
