murray was jackson's personal physician and was reportedly with the pop star when he died. >> records. searching for drugs or records? >> no drugs. this is just -- this is just records. >> reporter: the search for evidence in houston comes just a day after invtigators in california pushed dr. murray for additional medical records and talked about interviewing him for a third time. responding to in a request, murray's attorney released a statement which set in part -- the coroner wants to clear up the cause of death. we share that goal. based on dr. murray's minute-by-minute and item-by-item description of michael jackson's last days, he shld not be a target of criminal charges. police and federal agents yet to classify their work as a criminal investigation. and if there are any charges in the case, they woun't likely come until toxicology results and a full autopsy are released and those reports aren't expected for at least another week. jay gray, news4.

now to the battle brewing from the white house to capitol hill to your doctor's office how to fix the country's health care system. president obama is pushing for a bold restructuring plan. as you know, not everyone is onboard and the verbal bat continues today. just hours before the president appears before the nation. steve handelsman has the latest. >> president obama will aim his answers that concern americans. >> i think it is travesty more than 40 million people in our country are uninsured. >> i'm looking forward to learning more and hearing what he has to say. >> reporter: mr. obama will say congress should start voting. and democratic senator leading the search for ways to pay for the obama plan feels the push from the president. >> it is important that there be pressure. otherwise sometimes things tend to drift. >> reporter: on the house side, speaker pelosi is eager for a vote. >> we are pleased that the progress that's being made. we believe that the american

people have waited long enough. >> reporter: the two biggest issues remain unresolved. one, how to control costs. limit pricing medical tests and reimburse doctors and hospitals at lower rates. and issue two, how to pay to inshower our 40 million uninsured. high taxes on the wealthy and republicans say that get it right. don't hurry. >> most americans don't even like this health care bill. they don't want it and it is going to raise taxes so what is the rush? is it personal? a republican senator who said if we beat barack obama on health care, we can break him. today said breaking b-r-a-k-e. >> we need to put the brakes on this president. >> reporter: even a rob-solid democrat, house ways and means committee chairman charlie rangel of new york was overheard by reporters saying no one wants to tell the speaker that she is moving too fast.

tonight mr. obama will be forced to explain why he's still demanding a health care vote next month. i'm steve handelsman, news4 at the white house. we will have much more on this health care battle in our next half hour. and youan see president obama's news conference right here on nbc 4 starting at 8:00 tonight. you can also see it streaming live on our website, nbcwashington.com. new evidence of involving virginia tech gunman cho. some of his missing mental health records have been found. the documents were discovered last weekend in the home of dr. robert miller. the former head of the university's mental health clinic. cho's records and those of other students were apparently removed from the school campus one year before the shooting. cho killed 32 people april 16, 2007. then committed suicide as police closed in. his mental health treatment has been a major issue in the investigation of the shootings. a new criminal investigation is under way. removing records from the clinic

is illegal. a win for supporters of gun control. the senate rejected a measure that -- measure to have -- would have allowed a person to carry a concealed gun into another state if they have a permit from their home state. 58 senators did vote for the amendment but 60 votes were needed for approval and opponents say the concealed weapon proposal would force states with tougher gun laws to accept gun carryg visitors from states with weaker laws. 48 states offer a concealed weapons permit. virginia governor tim kaine is calling virginia lawmakers into a special session next month. he wants to address the recent supreme court ruling that some believe is jeopardizing criminal prosecution. the high court ruled in june virginia prosecutors must make forensic scientists available for cross-examination by the defense before the supreme court ruling the burden was on the defense to subpoena those scientists. that special session will start

august 19th. one month ago today, one metro train slammed into the back of another in the deadliest crash in metro history. nine people were killed, dozens more injured. and one person is still hospitalized today. investigators found that a circuit on the track failed to detect the stopped train. and didn't alert the incoming train that it needed to stop. that crash prompted metro to inspect its entire track system and during that inspection they found problems. metro officials acknowledge the trk circuits have malfunctioned on four of the five lines. but they take issue with the report that suggests that those failures are widespread problem. metro tells us the issues they found have been minor, nothing like the failure that caused last month's crash. however, this time of heightened awareness they decided to play it safe. >> we have been very conservative and we are going through and making adjustments on some cases replacing circuits

thatou normally wouldn't detect if it wasn't for the deeper analysis. >> he says they adjusted or removed sixer is cuts. he says the problems they found were not dangerous in some areas, trains running at 15 miles an hour. while crews inspect the tracks in the area. addressing concerns about lyme disease. aggressive new approach to fighting crime. four other stories making headlines in the washington area today. a man entered in a serious motorcycle accident this morning is expected to survive. the crash happened around 9:30 on the ramp between the clara barton parkway and macarthur boulevard. the motorcyclist was trapped under a small suv and flown to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. u.s. park police are still trying to figure out what caused the crash. overnight shooting in washington sent two people to the hospital. it had aed around midnight in southeast in the 2400 block.

police arrived on the scene and found two adults suffering from gunshot wounds. one was in critical condition and the other in stable condition. both are expected to survive. police are still investigating. prince george's county police announced three new crime fighting initiatives today. the plans are meant to continue to drive down crime rates in t county, even more this mmer. overall this year, crime is down but burglaries are up. the officers showed off thousands of dollars worth of stolen property. we will have more on this and also more on the federal investigation into the possible police corruption in prince george's county at 5:00. there will be a town hall meeting about lyme disease tonight in springfield, virginia. it is hoped the event will raise awareness about the dangers of the illness and steps that can be taken to reduce the risk. in virginia, the number of reported cases has doubled in the past few years. just in the last two years,

here are the final closing numbers from wall street for this wednesday. the dow is down 34 points. nasdaq closed ten points higher. and the new york stock exchange is off three points for the day. at a congressional hearing today general motors and chrysler defended their plans to eliminate about 3,000 dealerships. the automakers said it is a vital piece of their strategy to

rebound from bankruptcy. and avoid liquidation and massive job losses. but many lawmakers oppose the dealer closings and they say the dealers received little warning and that the cuts will hurt many communities. it is the second day of congressional hearings on the auto industry. the obama administration also testified and urged congress not to intervene in the dealer closing plans. offers of car deals are nothing new. but there's one program -- for clunkers. that's designed to get old cars off the streets while stimulating sales. >> reporter: the so-called cash for clunkers incentive program is receiving up. >> get the car or truck tv street. >> reporter: by providing consumers extra cash to buy or lease new vehicle. here is how it works. your trade-in can't be older 25 years old and gets less than 18 miles a gallon to qualify. you will get a $3500 down

payment. nine miles per gallon morning what you trade in. 4500 if the difference is ten miles per gallon or better. >> people are really excited about it because it seems like money to the consumer. >> reporter: bigger bonus for the struggling auto industry. >> in the environment we are in, a program like this is heaven sent. >> reporter: chrysler announced today it will match the government incentive, taking an additional $4500 off most of its 2009 chrysler, dodge or jeep models. across the board manyealers believe the program could mean as many as 20 additional sales a month. >> almost every case there want somebody who was not in the market. it is somebody that this program is bringing to the market. so because of that, this program is selling cars. >> reporter: still not everyone is sold on the plan. critics say it is too costly and taken a huge detour from the original intent. >> what began as a reasonable idea to get clunkers off the

road and try to move some more efficient vehicles in their stead has been hijacked by the auto industry and some of its friends in congress. >> reporter: the federal program will run through november 1 or until $1 billion in rebate credits are reported. whichever comes first. some high school students from our area are still quarantined in china. after several contracted the swine flu which is a story we brought you first here on 4. the teens come from several different schools and a part of a cultural exchange program at the university of maryland. several have tested positive for the virus shortly after arriving in beijing on july 14th. no word when they will be released. the chinese government is paying for the medical bills and hotel stay. meanwhile, the group of students from oregon also quarantined was released by chinese authorities today. it was an emotional reunion. the students were greeted with hugs and flowers from classmates

and chaperones that were not quarantined. two of the students that tested positive for the virus but plan to continue with the tour. the first human trials of the swine flu vaccine had begun in australia. that's the word from two biotechnology companies. the goal is to control the swine flu virus which has already killed more than 700 people around the world. distribution could start as early as october. consumers safety experts are looking to make toys safer worldwide. the consumer product safety commission met with representatives from the toy industry to talk about the issue. the meeting took place in bethesda. the commission says there are rm different toy safety regulations around the globe. they would like to see a global standard that will make it's easier for manufacturers to make safe toys. there isoncern this afternoon that not enough is being done to protect the country's internet infrastructure. a newly released private study finds fault with what federal

agencies are doing to protect themselves and the country against an attack. the partnership for public service says its study found what it called a fragmented federal cyber force with the severe shortage of computer specialist was no one in charge of overall planning. the partnership blames the cumbersome hiring process and the lack of an overall strategy for recruiting and retaining workers. how about that ride home? let's get the first word on your rush hour. ashley linder is in the news4 traffic center with details. >> things are pretty slow today. let's take a trip around the capital beltway. as you can see here, the inner loop is at the top of your screen. continuing up towards 270. the lineup on the inner loop begins well before this point and starting out at tysons. the outer loop does not look too bad here but lit get slower as you make your way over the american legion bridge and making your way in towards tysons. we have midday road work that lasted much longer i than it should have which gave our evening rush hour real kick in the face. look at springfield.

welcome back to news4 at 4:30. i'm pat lawson muse. >> i'm jim handly. here are the top stories we are following. authorities execute ad search warrant today at the houston clinic of michael jackson's doctor. dr. conrad murray has been interviewed by police before as a witness to the pop star's death. authorities won't confirm whether criminal charges are pending but murray's attorney says investigators were seeking evidence of manslaughter. some new documents detailing the mental health of virginia

tech shooter cho have turned up. they were located at the house of the former head of virginia tech's mental health clinic. a new criminal investigation is under way because removing records from the clinic is illegal. >> battle over health care reform waged on again today in town. congress and the white house are still at odds trying to hammer out an agreement on the issue. the president will hold a live news conference tonight at 8:00 and you can see it live here on nbc 4 or watch it on nbcwashington.com. as the kaeb over health care reform intensifies a new poll finds more americans do not like the way president obama is handling this issue. the latest "usa today" gallup poll finds half of those asked, 50%, disapprove of president's work on health care. 44% said they approve. the poll was taken last weekend. the president will try to boost the health care reform plan when he addresses the nation in a prime time news

conference later tonight. nbc correspondent mike viqueira joins us live from capitol hill with a preview. mike, the poll shows the president's popularity has taken a bit of a hit. what's he need to say tonight to win over opponents of his health care plan? >> reporter: the president's overall popularity has always run ahead of the individual policies. now it's becoming even more of a spread. the deficit and in health care, the numbers are going down somewhat. the president tried very hard in his first term to take advantage of the high approval numbers and push through main priorities, talking about energy and health care. but he's running into problems, as you well know, here in congress. both on the house side where conservative democrats and freshmen vulnerable democrats who ran in districts that voted for george bush and john mccain and that -- yet, improbably want as democrats. they are very afraid of the surtax on the wealthiest americans that would be used in the house bill to pay for health

care reform. that'shy all eyes are on the senate at this point. day after day after day. virtually every day except sunday over the last ten days, the president has been hammering this, trying to keep the pressure on, trying to keep the hammer down. making his case, why this health care reform is needed to cut costs in the overall economy and a burden on the economy. plus, there are 50 million americans without insurance and something needs to be done about that. now he is going to be speaking directly to the members' constituents. ten minutes at the top of the press conference to make his opening statement and to speak without a filter and in an aunadult rated way to american people. with each question he can turn around and talk about his talking points and rebut some of the arguments. have this legislation on the road here in congress. >> mike viqueira, thank you. vaccinations are not just for little kids. public health experts want grownups to get more shots, too. official from the centers for disease control warn too many

adults are lax about keeping current with their immunizations. they say the vaccines are critical. parts of preventative care that can help protect against pneumonia, hepatitis b, flu and shingles. the cause could be part of the problem. shingles vaccine costs several hundred dollars. >> if there are substantial out-of-pocket costs for preventative service, against something that may happen to you in the future, most pokes who have tight budgets are going to think twice and maybe even three times before they put out that money. >> health experts say vaccine preventable diseases kill more american adults each year than breast cancer, aids, or car crashes. a d.c. based group is suing hot dog manufacturers saying they should use -- get this -- warning labels. the cancer project of vegan advocacy group is citing scientific studies that link hot dogs and other processed meats to colon cancer. they are suing kraft foods, oscar mayer, nathan's famous, and other companies on be half

of three colorectal cancer patients. the group wants warning labels put on hot dog packages much like the warning labels on cigarette cartons. it wasn't just another day at the office for these south korean politicians. things really got pretty unrulely in parliament today. hundreds of lawmakers began fighting after the country's ruling party tried to stop bills on media ownership. opposition officials tried to use a couch and other pieces of furniture to block ruling party lawmakers from entering the main hall of the national assembly. and that's when politicians from both sides started shoving and wrestling each other. several people were injured in the melee. >> we are more tame in this town. not by much. >> let's hope so. coming up, it is summer. lots of kids want to cool off in the water. but there is some important information you need to know before your child steps in the h2o. >> why your favorite pair of

water. drowning is a leading cause of accidental death in children. but there is hop banau mse h y of those deaths are preventible. an article in the july issue of washington parent magazine and washington parent.com looks at simple steps that you can take to keep your children safe in and around the water at home and at the pool or at the beach. at home, since small chin can drown and only one inch of water, keep all toilet lids down and put a child lock on them. watch every single second your youngster is in the bathtub. keep the doors to the laundry room closed. whenever you use a bucket be sure to pour the liquid out immediately after you use it. at the pool, if have you one in your backyard, make sure it is surrounded by a fence that's at least four feet high. keep a telephone nearby in case of an emergency. tell your children to avoid pool drains because some are powerful and can trap a child under water. parents learn cpr. older children should learn that as well. at the beach, tell youngsters to stay close to the shore.

when it comes to fashion first lady michelle obama is one of the most captivating ladies in this generation. her new hairdo has a lot of folks talking. most people are used to seeing the first lady's hair styled and long. now, though, she is wearing it pulled back and up. she was spotted with the new do on friday, department of transportation event.

the white house was reportedly flooded with telephone calls. people thought she had cut her locks but that apparently is not the case. marion robinson, first lady's mother, rarely speaks in public. but today she took part in a summer reading program called "read to the tots." the event took place outside on the grounds of the u.s. department of education in southwest. mrs. robinson read a book called "the napping house." she read to a group of pre-k to elementary schools. when asked about life at the white house, mrs. robinson said it is wonderful. in tv's "real word" filming here in our area and depending whom you ask, not everybody is too happy about it. some people think they are taking over the town. keith garvin is working for the story. you tell us that some people are embracing it but a lot of people are fed up with the cast, crew, and just the whole intrusive

nature of it. >> that's true. the show is being taped at a mansion in dupont circle, an area that's usually quiet. it doesn't get too many lights or cameras that they are used to. now with the shows filming since the july fourth weekend. and the word has gotten out and a number of people just come by and they wait outside for the crews, for the cast to come in and out. especially thursday, friday, saturday nights. and they even had a couple of block parts just waiting for the cast members to come home and we talked to one gentleman who lives across the street and he and many other neighbors are fed up because in -- in their words, there have been a lot of fights and just a lot of commotion that was not there before, obviously. >> what is their outlet? how are they blowing off the steam? >> like a lot of people these days, twitter, facebook those are outlets. they go online and air their grievances. it is a way for people frustrated as sort of to talk about it. because they say they have no problem was the cast members themselves. they understand they are on the show and they know what they

signed up for. the problem they have is they -- with the production company because they don't feel the production company let enough people know the show was going to be there and didn't give them a heads-up on what kind of commotion could be created and scene was going to be created. they don't have a problem cast members but certainly aren't too happy with the production crews. >> what are the cast and crew doing about it? what are they doing now? >> right now mtv and the production crew, really tight-lipped because you can understand that they are taping the show but for next season. this season actually isn't going to air until the fall. they are being tight-lipped about a lot of things because they don't want too much about the show to leak out. so they have in many cases talked to some of the folks in the neighborhood and trying to quell some of the dissension. but they are going to be there a few more months. i'm sure this isn't the last we heard about this house. >> they are getting around town, too. everywhere you look. >> just go online and you will see. >> keith garvin tonight at 5:00. looking forward to your report. thank you, keith. pat? >> thanks, jim. still to come on "news4 at

here's some of the top stories making news on the web today. >> employees at a french painer plant upset over layoffs took matters into their own hands yesterday. they kidnapped their bosses and the employees were negotiating with the company over planned layoffs when they decided to hold the plant managers hostage for several hours. they finally released him three hours later. today negotiations started again in a more neutral location. the eclipse in the sky over asia caught the attention of more than just people at the tokyo aquarium, seals and other animals came out to clap and to honk at the spectacular sight in

the sky. all of the animals, we are told, were given specially polarized o tas watch the bright light. >> you have to protect their eyes, too. a california man-made an unexpected discovery. fishing in san diego. he saw this. the image o a plane on his fish finder. officials determined that what he found was a navy bomber from world war ii. it made a water landing 64 years ago. the navy was trying to decide if it wants to salvage the plane now. a florida church is teaching about giving in an unusual way. first baptist oveto gave all of its members envelope with cash inside. some got ten or 20 bucks. a few envelopes contained $100. here is the catch, members couldn't spend the money on themselves or give it back to the church. instead they had to pay it forward. pass it on to someone in need. the church hopes to inspire other random acts of kindness.

we continue to follow the new developments involving the michael jackson investigation. authorities executed a search warrant today at the houston clinic of michael jackson's doctor. dr. conrad murray had been interviewed by police as a witness to the pop star's death. authorities won't confirm whether criminal charges are pending but murray's attorney says investigators were seeking evidence for possible manslaughter. much more on this story in just a few minutes coming up on "news4 at 5:00." meanwhile, there are new questions about how many children the singer really has. a british tabloid says michael jackson may have had another son. the 25-year-old dancer that sat with the family during the memorial service. the tabloid claims the child looks like jackson's younger boy, blanket. there's still no word where jackson will be buried. jeff rossum has more on that and what jackson thought about his own comeback tour. >> reporter: there's continuing confusion over michael jackson's

final resting place. by most media accounts, after the memorial service, his body was taken to forest lawn funeral home to be stored. but not buried. and there is a reason. several friends tell nbc news there's disagreement inside the family. jermaine just spoke about it on french television. >> i don't think my broth being put in forest lawn is the place. i'm not sure if he's in mr. gordy's crypt or whatever it is, but i -- i was told -- totally against that. i fought to get him at neverland. it is his work. it is his -- it is his imagination. >> this is a really large family and they all have their own agendas. some of them are superstars in their own right. some of them really need the michael jackson name in order to be successful and their financial success is what they are putting first. that's why everything is taking so long to come out. >> we are also learning more about michael jackson's private moments from a rolling stone cover story due out friday. we got an exclusive first look.
