involved. >> we are following a developing story right now at 4:00. dozens arrested in one of the biggest corruption busts this country has ever seen. the details are incredible. hello and welcome to "news4 at 4:00." i'm pat lawson muse. >> we begin, folks with breaking news out of bethesda right now. a golfer has been struck by lightning at congressional country club. >> jackie bentsen joins us live now from bethesda with latest details on this breaking story. >> reporter: we are told montgomery county fire and rescue crews were called here to congressional just before 3:00 for a report of a person struck by lightning. now, fire officials tell us that when the first responders arrived, they found a 42-year-old man who had been struck by lightning while on the golf course. we hear he may actually have been trying to get inside in advance of the coming storm. now, at this time we don't know

if the man was struck by lightning directly, if there was a lightning strike in his proximity and somewhat less injured, we do not know that. we can tell you he was taken to a local hospital by ambulance and officials will give us no information on his condition at this point. when we called congressional country club someone that answered the phone said "no comment." what we can tell is a 42 we are old man was taken by ambulance from here at congressional just after 3:00 today. taken to a local hospital after he was apparently struck by lightng. when we get more information we will bring it to you. back to you. >> we will stay in touch. jackie bensen live in bethesda. we have been keeping a close eye on the storms all afternoon. meteorologist veronica johnson's live up in storm center 4 with more on this severe weather threat. veronica? >> thanks, jim. no severe thunderstorm warnings across the area. still quite a bit of light new england. most of which still moving through the maryland area. let me show you where on digital doppler right there, one cell

heading through nohern howard county. carroll county stretching off to the east and moving northeast at about 10 to 15 miles per hour. and there is another little pocket of lightning there in eastern prince george's county right now. it is around the mitchellville area. again, heading there towards mitchellville and eventually making its way towards anne arundel county. then we have another cell that's for out. this one in jefferson county in west virginia. so remember, you know, lightning safety tips, 30/30 rule. one of the most underrated weather hazards. very unpredictable. there are things you can do to keep safe. you want to seek shelter when you can avoid the metal of wood, fences, 30/30 rule p seek shelter if the flash-to-bang del say 30 seconds or less. remain under cover until 30 minutes after the final clap of thunder. that's the 30/30 rule. across the area, some locations getting plenty of rainfall today. look at baltimore harbor. over three-quarters of an inch

of rain two and two in pax river and more coming up this evening. we will talk more about that in a few. pat? >> all right, thanks, veronica. a child is hospitalized this afternoon after nearly drowning in a swimming pool. it happened this morning at the national conference center. a private resort in ashburn, virginia. 7-year-old boy was found not breathing in the facility's pool while traporting him to the hospital emergency crews were able to revive the boy with cpr. no word on his current condition or what may have triggered the incident. the national transportation safety board has released the third and latest findings in last month's deadly metro train collision on the red line. today safety investigators tell us a track circuit near the crash site had been malfunctioning since 2007. the ntsb said it requested troubled tickets for the past 18 months to see if the problems had been reported. and investigators also

identified what they described as anomalies with several other circuits as well. it is believed that a track malfunction to the 22nd of june crash. nine people were killed and 80 injured. metro sign ad deal with an annapolis based firm to develop a backup system for its trains and tracks that could kick in if the monitoring system ever failed. the ntsb advised metro to get such a system which does not exist. so transportation communication, air inc.will work on providing the network and provide continuous real-time data on the operation of all track circuits. the new alert system would automatically throw up a red flag if a circuit problem was detected. for first time since that deadly metro crash, the takoma station will remain open past 10:00 tonight. it has been closing regularly to accommodate investigators working on the track. metro announced that takoma station will now remain open all

day today and tomorrow. that means it will be open until midnight tonight, 3:00 a.m. tomorrow, and passengers should still expect continuing delays due to the investigatio > congress is working on a special honor for major general david wherly. one of the passengers that died in the collision. the d.c. degate, eleanor holmes norton, introduce ad measure to name the d.c. national guard tuition bill after general wherley. the bill provides recruiting and retention incentives. general wherley worked closely with norton through the years to get funding for the program. his wife, anne, also died in that metro crash. >> a procedural setback for president obama in the fight over health care reform. the leaders of the senate say they can't take the first floor vote on the obama plan before the august break. it is what obama had demanded but today the president said it is okay as long as the plan keeps on moving forward. steve handelsman has more on

place to comb on the conduct of law enforcement that he was not presently present for. another writes -- then there is this. post the comment at the bottom of the story. to a disturbing story out of new jersey involving charges of corruption and greed. dozens have been taken into custody today, including politicians, clergymen, allegedly tied up in a money laundering ring that involved traffic everything from fake designer bags to human organs. this story is still developing at this hour. >> the complaints shows for

these defendants, corruption was a way of life. they existed in an ethics-free zone. >> federal authorities today outlined the roundup of 44 people charged in a wide reaching ring of corruption that stretched from new jersey to switzerland to israel. those arrested include mayors of three new jersey cities and two state legislators and ran ice and others. >> the people that we have arrested today include mayors, deputy mayors, new jersey state assemblymen, city councilmen, city council candidates, a variety of other public officials. >> reporter: the investigation initially focus order a money laundering network that operated between brooklyn and new jersey. the network allegedly laundered money through charities controlled by ran ice in new york and new jersey. >> they used purported charities and entities supposedly set up to do good work and as vehicles fo laundering millions of dollars in illicit funds. >> officials say the money

laundering eventually widened when the politicians began taking bribes. >> these cplaints painted a disgraceful picture of religious leaders, heavy money laundering crews and acting as crime bosses. >> reporter: the probe also allegedly involves two hospitals, including baltimore's johns hopkins and the sale of body parts. authorities say one suspect dealt in kidneys. >> his business was to entice vulnerable people to give up a kidney for $10,000 which he in turn would turn around and sell for $160,000. >> reporter: late this afternoon a member of new jersey governor jon corzine's cabinet resigned amidst the allegations. pittsburgh steelers quarterback ben roethlisberr is speaking out today for the first time about allegations that he sexually assaulted a lake tahoe casino hostess last year. at a news conference in pittsburgh today the super bowl winning quarterback insisted he is innocent and said the woman's

lawsuit is bogus. >> i did not sexually assault mcnaullty. saturday was the first that i learned of her accusations. her false and vicious allegations are an take on my family and on me. i would never, ever forc myself on a woman. i'm going to fight to protect my family and my reputation. >> roethlisberger said he would remain focused on the upcoming season with the pittsburgh steelers, defending super bowl champions. another developing story out of sports. this one we are watching in afternoon involving michael vick could meet wit the nfl commissioner, roger goodell, as early as tomorrow. that's what espn is now reporting. vick was released from federal custody earlier this week after serving a 23-month sentence on dogfighting charges. he will reportedly discuss vick's possible return to the nfl. a person of interest in custody today after an attack at

a popular park and a new home for animals in prince george's county. here's a look at other stories making headlines in our area today. police say they have a person of interest in a rock creek park attack that happened yesterday. a woman jogging around 7:00 a. msks near bingham a beach drive saw a man in the area. she noticed him a second time. that's when he pulled her into the woods and assaulted her. people who used the park are being urged to do so in groups, not alone. overnight shootings in southeast washington left one man dead and sent another to the hospital. it happened around 2:00 a.m. in the 1,200 block of eaton road. police arrived on thecene to find one man already dead and another shot. he is expected to survive. police are still looking for a suspect and a motive. fairfax county police are asking for help in finding a woman in these pictures. they say she is responsible for two recent bank robberies.

first happened june 25th at the wachovia bank on wharton station boulevard. the other robbery happened july 15th at the suntrust bank on richmond highway. in both cases, the woman approached a teller at the counter and passed a note and implied she had a weapon and demanded money. the police say she fled in a gold car. prince george's county has a new animal control facility. the new building is located on ground station road in upper marlboro. the 37,000-square foot facility will provide the county with all ocean malprotection and control services. county executive jack johnson was on hand for today's big unveiling. stay right there. we are just getting started on "news4 at 4:00." new revelations today about the possible secret son that michael jackson may have fathered. this as a number of people get in trouble for what they know about jackson's death. also ahead, brand-new video showing the moment that two

for loudoun county in virginia. that's northern loudoun county and most of this cluster of storms headed towards the east affecting the majority of frederick county. and this area of severe thunderstorm warnings out until 5:00 pfshg m. stay inside away from windows and doors. i will keep you updated. back to you. on wall street, stocks posting another strong rally. dow gaining 187 points. reaching the 9,000 level for the first time in months, folks. the nasdaq gained 47 points. the new york stock exchange closed 150 points higher today. another batch of company earnings out today. there are a few surprises. ford, nation's second largest automaker, posted a profit of

$2.8 billion in the second quarter. a company credits its cost cutting and debt reduction as part of the reason for the boost. sum airways also returned a profit in the second quarter of $58 million. "the new york times" says its second quarter profit climbed just over $39 million. that's an 85% jump. while at&t took a small hit, its profits were down 15%. the company's $3 billion in earnings still exceeded estimates thanks in part to sales of apple's iphone. the government's cash for clunkers program aimed at jump starting the car market got under way today. the incentive program is aimed at getting older cars off the road and stimulating new car sales under the program your trade-in has to be less than 25 years old and get less than 1 miles per gallon. you will get a $3500 voucher if your new car gets four to nine miles per gallon more than the

car you trade in. and $4500 if the difference is ten miles perfect gallon or better. what's more, chrysler says it will match the government incentives and taking $4500 more off most of the 2009 models. it could be a deal for car buyers and an even bigger bonus for the struggling auto industry. >> the environment we are in now a program like this, is heav heaven-sent. >> the federal program will run through november 1 or until $1 billion in rebate credits are reported, whichever comes first. the real estate industry continues to show signs of recovery. sales of previously owned homes climbed 3.6% from may to june. that's the third straight monthly increase. the annual sales rate of 4.9 million homes is the highest since last october. the median sales price of $1 $181,000 is up. it is still well below the $215,000 level of a year ago.

♪ the crew of space shuttle "endeavour" is getting ready for another day. this morning they woke up to elton john's "tiny dancer." that song was dedicated to the commander. the crew will use a robotic arm to transfer experiments to the international space station. we have seen pictures of it from space. we are getting a glimpse of te international space station from back here on earth. the pictures were taken in oregon last night. apparently the space station's solar panels reflected the sun's light in just the right way to make it advicible from the ground. the space station is about the size of a football field. orbiting at more than 17 miles miles per hour. 240 miles above the earth.

>> pretty impressive. we have some severe weather out there now, folks. let's get the latest on the warnings from veronica. >> yes, jim. handful of warnings still out until 5:00 p.m. most in maryland now. jefferson county, west virginia, one area there and washington county, maryland, frederick county, maryland, until 5:00 p.m. and loudoun county in virginia until 5:00 p.m., too. there is a look at the area and a look at the locations that will be affected. lightning is likely. hail and high winds possible. gusts to 50 miles per hour. it could see some penny-sized hail affecting the neighborhoods of jefferson heights by 4:36. middletown, 4:39. edgewood area by 4:46. again, most of which it is up to north around frederick county, maryland. all day long with some of the thunderstorms, it has been raining hard. downpours, reducing visibility. look at baltimore, maryland, picking up 1.39 inches of rainfall. there has been ponding on the roadways. real heavy rain across the area.

arlington, xpt 87 of an inch of rain. chantilly, close to a half inch as well. we are getting some winds with the actual thunderstorms that are moving through the area. so let's talk about this system here. really is two weather systems affecting us today. we have tropical low pressure system just offhe coast of virginia now. it has been moving up from north carolina. that one will be providing real heavy rain for new england and probably slight delays through the day tomorrow. another system that's just west of our area. this one with the little pieces or waves still affecting the area tomorrow. but evening downpours probably rain in the forecast and thunderstorms, yes, until about 9:00 or 10:00 p.m. 82, the temperature. cooling off a bit from the high heat today. boy, has it been muggy out there. the atmosphere is really juiced up. here is a look at your futuretaking you threw through the next 48 hours. by 8:00 a.m. friday morning, cloud cover across the area. we will have more breaks and looking at more sunshine west of the areaing, loudoun county,

welcome back to news4 at 4:30. i'm pat lawson muse. >> i'm jim handly. dozens of people arrested in jerjers this morning on corruption charges. among those arrested are the mayors of hoboken and secaucus and state legislator and several rabbis. the arrests resulted from major investigations into money laundering, political bid rigging and human organ trafficking. >> new revelations in last month's deadly metro crash. the system that detects stops metro trains in the area of the crash malfunctioning since 2007. according to a new report from the ntsb. also today, investigators identified what they described as anomalies in several other circuits in the system. the president in ohio today acknowledging the senate won't make his deadline for overhauling health care. he wanted congress to pass legislation before leaving on an august recess. mr. obama says it is october as long as people keep on working

on it because change cannot come quickly enough. police say they are talking to a person of interest in a rock creek park attack that took place yesterday. they are now calling the attack that happened yesterday morning an aggravated assault. we want to stress that no one is in custody in connection with the case. now fighting the swine flu. we are learning more about how the government and drug companies plan to test the new swine flu vaccine to make sure that it is safe. and whether it will be ready before the h1n1 virus returns this fall. tracie potts reports from capitol hill where lawmakers were briefed today. >> reporter: the swine flu could be back in force as soon as september when children return to school. you about most of the vaccine won't ready until mid october. safety studies won'te done until november. the government stocked up on vaccine ingredients but manufacturers say they need a firm go-ahead. >> if the decision was made

today, as soon as the vaccine would be available would be mid september. >> reporter: it use as live virus says its vaccine could be ready earlier. >> in case the emergency we could have product available early september. >> reporter: at least five clinical trials will test vaccines on adults and children as young as 6 months old. in most case two shots, three weeks apt, in varying doses. those tests will determine if a substance is needed to stretch vaccine. it is yielding only about 30% of what scientists expected. it has never been used in flu shots in the u.s. >> if something happens to somebody after vaccination, the vaccine will be -- whether the vaccine is in use or not. >> reporter: lawmakers got an update and learned everything depends on how soon this virus decides to show up. >> we got a little bit lucky last year, frankly, this didn't hit until late in the school year. we are not going to be lucky going into this school year. we have to be ready now. >> reporter: the government's already purchased 195 million

doses to be given out as soon as has it is ready. next week the cdc will decide who should get the vaccine first. from capitol hill, tracie potts, news4. maryland will be one of the testing grounds for the swine flu vaccine. a university of maryland school of medicine in baltimore has been chosen by the national institutes of health to begin clinical trials next month. the research will involve as many as 1,000 adults and children at ten centers nationwide. to volunteer you can call 410-706-6156. some students from this area could be released from quarantine in china as early as tomorrow. the teens were hospitalized last week when some in their group came down with the swine flu. the students come from several different schools and were in china as part of a cultural exchange program at the university of maryland. once they are released the students are free to extend their stay and complete their trip. secretary of state hillary

clinton had some harsh words for north korea today regarding the nuclear weapons program. comments came during a regional summit in thailand. mrs. clinton said the north korea has no friends left in the international community and urged asian leaders to vigorously enforce sanctions against pyongyang. >> we are not interested in half measures. we do not intend to reward the north just for returning to the table. >> reporter: in response, north korea said that it has n intention to return to the bargaining table. and pulled out of talks on its nuclear program. a soldier who was reported as a possible kidnap victim has been discovered unharmed.ge st n thg quebiion remains. what's this all a hoax? officer james gonzalez was taken into custody last night during the traffic stop in texas after leaving a relative's home. he based -- is based at fort hood. investigators are looking into

many smokers switched to electronic or e-cigarettes thinking they are a healthier alternative to the real thing. the food and drug administration says they are not. initial test results show e-cigarettes contain toxic chemicals, including a key ingredient that found in antifreeze. manufacturers say the fda's

research is too narrow to reach any valid conclusion. another new study suggests that drinking a moderate amount of alcohol may lower the risk of dementia in older results. they looked at 3,000 people over age 57. those that drank eight to 14 alcoholic beverages per week experienced a 37% reduction in their risk of developing dementia. compared to those that didn't drink at all. the type of alcohol they consumed didn't seem to matter. takes a dedicated dog owner to pry his pet from the jaws of a seven-foot alligator. that's what a florida man did and he wound up in worse shape than his dog. michelle kosinski has the story. >> good girl. >> reporter: reunited with her best friends that just got home from the hospital, you have to wonder if man just know how loyal her owner is.
