the four-seat robinson r-44 helicopter was barely recognizable after crashing last night on interstate 70, ten miles east of hagerstown. >> witnesses reported that the aircraft was flying very low, that they saw sparks, flying before the aircraft hit the ground. and then there was a post-crash fire that substantially damaged the aircraft, as i said, consumed the cockpit. >> all four people on board were killed. there were no injuries on the ground. investigators believe they've recovered all of the wreckage. and today began moving the wreckage to delaware. as they try to piece together what happened. >> we're just beginning the, to examine the wreckage. that will be the first step once it's taken to delaware. we will also look at all the maintenance records for the aircraft. >> they'll look at maintenance records and the pilot's certification. >> medical certification was recently updated. dated july 13th. he reported at the time of his

application for that medical certificate, that he had 630 hours of total flight experience. he was certified as a commercial pilot for both helicopter and fixed-wing aircraft. >> investigators will also examine the role that weather may have played. visibility was somewhat lilted by fog. and the pilot had delayed his scheduled takeo if hagerstown for two hours, because of the weather. >> the helicopter was flying very low. and we know, at least i was told that the wires that were struck were about 70 feet off the ground. so that gives you a sense of what height the helicopter was flying. >> and the ntsb says the pilot was flying according to visual flht rules. so there was no flight plan. >> this pilot did have instrument rating. the question is whether the aircraft had the kinds of instruments that would have allowed him to fly in, in bad weather. we know that he was, he was flying, we believe he was flying vfr, visual flight.

but whether the helicopter itself was equipped with the kinds of instruments that would have allowed him to fly tea ighm bad weather is something we'll have to look at. >> now, advanced helicopter concepts released a letter that it sent to its employees today. it reads in part, three of our employees and a passenger were aboard a helicopter when it crashed. all four have perished. our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of who is though perished in this tragic accident. stay with news4 and nbcwashington.com as we continue to learn more about this deadly chopper crash. we'll have much more on this throughout the evening, with live reports from derrick ward beginning at 5:00. there was a deadly crash today in calvert county, maryland, involving a sheriffs deputy, a teenager was killed. it happened around 11:00 a.m. this morning at the intersection of southern maryland boulevard and apple way in the town of dundalk. investigators tell us a sheriffs deputy was responding to a call when another vehicle turned left front of him. the impact caused the officer's

cruiser to overturn. the other vehicle caught fire. the driver of the other vehicle was described as an 18-year-old woman, she died at the scene. her name hasn't been released yet. we're told she had just recently graduated from high school. the officer was transported to a hospital. it's been warm and a bit breezy on and off today. is the rain all gone? veronica johnson has our forecast from the storm center. >> the rain is not all gone, pat, we have some thunderstorms out there west of the area this afternoon. and could see more as we go through the rest of the afternoon, into the evening hours. let's talk about jefferson county, i'll take you to the radar, because that's where there have been some thunderstorms already. a bit of lightning there, west virginia once again, that cell dying out as it moves eastward. but we've got more down to the south of the area. and for frederick county, ma sland, as well as carroll county up in maryland, there will be more heavy rain, more thunderstorms dropping in for the evening rush. right now we have this area of

thunderstorms, eastern culpepper and orange county, too, south and west of d.c., that's pushing to the east. around orange and clifton and bledsoe, heading eat. heading into areas eventually around stafford and perhaps even spotsylvania county. meanwhile, of course, safety concerns, you want to keep that in mind. if you've got weather threateng in your area, get inside. the major part of our weather system, though, is off the coast. so just some scattered showers and thunderstorms only going to last for a couple of hours. not through the entire night as they did last night. 80 for the temperature, a big drop in the dew point temperature, but humidity will be a big part of your upcoming weekend. your fast forecast, a few strong storms, perhaps more for the weekend. and what about some heat and some steam? we'll talk about that in just a few. closing nurmgs from wall street on this friday, the dow climb 25 points.

remaining above the 9000 level today. the nasdaq lost a little ground, down about seven. and the new york stock exchange closed 35 points higher. paychecks for thousands of americans are getting a boost. the federal minimum wage went up 70 cents today, from $6.55 an hour to $7.25 an hour. and thanks to state laws, workers in seven state and the district will get a little more. d.c. workers will get $7.55 an hour. backers of the increase say it's long overdue for millions of the nation's working purr poor. but some say it could prolong the recession by forcing small businesses to lay off the same workers that the pay hike was meant to help. a northern virginia man was sentenced today to 20 years in federal prison for supplying his girlfriend with a lethal dose of heroin last year. it led to the uncovering of a

heroin ring in the centreville area. most were former or current students at westfield high school in western fairfax county. prosecutors say 20-year-old skyler sniffle introduced her to the drug and actively tried to obstruct the investigation. >> from day one, he has showed no remorse. and i think you saw in his statement today, which he read in the monotone voice, he read it word for word, as if somebody else wte it for him. that just indicates to me this he's not remorseful. >> the defendant will be 40 released released from federal prison. the banita jacks murder trial resumed this afternoon, the d.c. woman accused of killing her four daughters. today, at least two more witnesses are expected to take the stand for the prosecution. then the judge could begin deliberating the evidence as soon as this afternoon. this is a bench trial, so there's no jury involved.

with concerns over the safety of metro, the transit agency has released a video to educate riders about how circuits are controlled, and maintained. this youtube video shows what a train controller sees when a train is operating through a circuit that's been turned off for maintenance. the video comes after reports that metro's control center was losing sight and losing track of trains, as they traveled through the system. metro continues to address new issues found by the ntsb, that may have played a role in last month's deadly crash. investigators have already reported a bond on a track circuit replaced just five days before the accident malfunctioned. now they found another bond replaced in 2007, also had anomalies over an 18-month period. but metro leaders say the problem was not so bad that the system could not detect trains. >> we have not found any failures. we're going through the wreckage to insure there were no failures

during that period of time. if we find that there were any cases where we failed to detect a train, you will hear this from us. >> metro is stepping up its circuit data review, from once every 30 days, to twice a day. lawmakers on capitol hill are also getting involved. introducing legislation that toughens regulations on subway systems. there were more delays on the red line today, after a person was hit by a train. and why some people are having trouble borrowing books from local libraries. a report and other stories making headlines in the washington area today. metro train and witnesses report he intentionally put himself on the tracks. it happened around 12:30 at the van ness station, a train heading for shady grove pulled into aization when a man got in front of the train. emergency crews responded, they got him out from under the train and took him to the hospital the trains are sharing a sing track between cleveland park and

friendship heights this afternoon while police investigate. a warning for commuters who use chain bridge. traffic patters around the bridge will change next week as the construction continues. it affects outbound traffic from d.c. into arlington. road barriers will be moved and the roadway will be restripped to create a separate lane for traffic turning on to route 123. right now, turning traffic and traffic heading on to glebe road share a single lane. hundreds of library card-holders in washington may have trouble the next time they go to try to check out a book. that's because when thousands of inactive accounts were deleted last month, some acte library users were eliminated as well. the purpose of last month's purge was to get rid of duplicate accounts and accounts that hadn't been used in many years. library officials say users can reactivate their card by bringing i.d. to any branch here in the district. astronauts on board the space shuttle "endeavour" are in the middle of a 7 1/2-hour

two top administration officials are putting heads in public over who should be in charge of making sure your money, the money you borrow and the money you save, is protected. tracey pots has the story from capitol hill. >> reporter: the government says risky mortgages and lax credit rules have confused customers and help drive this economy to the brink. the treasury secretary tells congress one new agency should

the house fire is in gaithersburg, maryland and believed to be struck by lightning yesterday. and the problem we had again, was the downpours, torrential rains in the area, take a look here. this is in virginia, route 110 near the pentagon, where traffic slowed to a crawl. and the remainder of problems around the district. scott, circle, closed part of 16th street because of high water. so where's the heavy rain now? where most of it is just north of us, up over the maryland line. there's one little batch down to the south. headed towards fredericburg. we're doing okay for right 'rno let me show you our current conditions. 34 degrees at reagan national airport. the dew point temperature is 60 degrees. it's a bit humid, but not quite as high as it was yesterday. we've got a variable wind now out othe north-northeast. so here it is, they just warned on this one, up over areas of chambersberg and pennsylvania, chiffonsberg and over towards

hanover. that's toos pennsylvania, and as this drops southeastward over the next hour or so, it will be heading areas around frederick county and carroll county, too. maryland. so that's where the heaviest rain is going to be spotted within the next hour. around the beltway, we're quiet. but for orange county down south and headed towards stafford county, as well as spotsylvania. there's another area with some lightning. but nothing like what's north of us right now. so towards indian town, headed toward the east, toward brook road as well as hazel grove, there's some lightning. so if you live in locations and you've got to be somewhere in the next couple of minutes, leave now so you don't hit the hey rain. let's show you the rainhe in x lexington, virginia for the month, over seven inches of rain. one area through virginia that's been getting real heavy rain. meanwhile, as we take a look at the radar and satellite loop, most of the instability is gone from yesterday. a big low pressure system that we talked about off the coast of

north carolina, that tropical low headed to the north. producing rain up across new england. and at least things are going to be quieting down for them. our next chance, best chance for seeing heavy rain, perhaps severe weather will be on sunday. look at the temperature, 84 degrees right now. get ready for a bit of heat across the area, because temperatures will be rising close to 90 degrees, going into next week, a huge area of high pressure off the coast and we continue with the south-southwesterly wind. so unlike yesterday, our storms will be ending early. about 7:00 or so. quiet, starting out with some sunshine. then getting the steam back in here and the heat. with some clouds and scattered storms for tomorrow afternoon. i think mainly west of the area. so for this evening, temperatures cooling down from the 80s to the 70s. by tomorrow morning, 66 to 71 degrees. it will be warm and it's going to be hot by the afternoon. take a look at your forecast. we'll go for mostly sunny skies, to partly sunny by the afternoon. there is again, a slight chance for some showers and storms,

dundalk. investigators say that the officer's vehicle flipped over, the woman's car caught fire, she died at the scene. today, president obama spoke to the police officer at the center of a racial uproar. mr. obama caused a stir after saying that the cambridge, massachusetts police had acted stupidly in arresting a harvard university professor, who is also an obama friend. the president said he could have calibrated his words differently. reporter chris clacken has the latest on this. >> reporter: the surprise visit at the briefing by the president follows his remarks earlier this week, that cambridge, massachusetts police sergeant, james crowley, acted stupidly in the arrest of harvard professor, henry gates. >> i duly just had a conversation with sergeant jim crowley. >> reporter: admitting he contributed to the uproar, the president said he could have calibrated his words differently and put a bit of the blame on both sides. >> there was an overreaction in

pulling professor gates out of his home. professor gates probably overreacted as well. >> reporter: at an earlier news conference, crowley didn't speak, but his supporters did, saying crowley went by the book in arresting gates last week. >> after his own intensive investigation, the cambridge police department also expressed support for sergeant crowley. clearing him of any wrongdoing. >> reporter: crowley told a boston news affiliate thursday that gates was immediately confrontational, when he and another officer responded to a call about two black males breaking into the house. >> i said, i'm sergeant crowley from the cambridge police department and i'm investigating a break-in in progress. and he responded why, because i'm a black man and an american? in a very agitated town. >> crowley's version is at odds with what gates told cnn. >> i demanded to know his name

and his badge number. he wouldn't say anything. vasup wy er he was very upset. i said, why are you not responding to me? because you're a white police officer and i'm a black man. >> reporter: the disorderly conduct charge that gates faced was dropped. while president obama says he's hoping for something else. >> my hope is that as a consequence of this event, this ends up being what's called a teachable moment. >> reporter: chris clacken, news4. the president said his conversation with crowley confirms his belief that the sergeant is a good man and an outstanding officer. senators are set to vote tuesday on whether to confirm supreme court nominee, sonia sotomayor. she's expected to be easily confirmed. however today the senator who runs the gop senate campaign arm says he'll vote no. texas republican john cornyn said despite sotomayor's impressive academic background, he still has doubts. he said he came away from the confirmation hearings last week

still wondering quote, who is the real judge sotomayor. cornyn also acknowledged that the judge has solid backing from democrats, as well as a handful of republicans. and will almost certainly join the bench. there's new information involving a group of local high school students kquarantined in china following a swine flu scare. a parent tells us four are still quarantined. those released have been transferred to another hotel. the students are from several area schools. they were quarantined after several came down with the swine flu last week shortly after arriving in beijing for an educational tour. and there is word a fourth person in maryland has died of swine flu. state health officials say the patient was an eastern shore resident who, unlike the first three cases, did not have any apparent illnesses or underlying risk factors. a medical investigation is under way in that case. meanwhilors there's growing concern about the spread of the swine flu virus.

right now, around the beltway, we're quiet, but take a look at what's north of us. a severe thunderstorm warnings, these moving three the chambersberg, the fairfield and hanna area, as these continue to slide southeast at about 15 miles per hour, they'll get to areas like edgemont up in north in frederick county and you can see lightning associated with that particular cell. what else is going on across the area? well how about some hot weather for us today. temperatures in the mid 80s. but coming up for the weekend, we'll be close do 90 degrees. so 80 degrees, there might be a passing shower. it's looking less and less likely. we take on the san diego padres there at 7:05. so perhaps just some clouds for us. for tomorrow morning, some sunshine and 69 to 70 degrees. then clouds build during the afternoon. we'll hit a high tomorrow of 92 degrees. 90 for sunday. showers and storms a possibility. especially on sunday. and i think saturday will be the best day out of the weekend. back to you.

it says since 2005, the fair and accurate credit transaction act has kept consumers safe. the act was designed to reduce identity theft. it prohibits businesses from printing more than five digits of a customer's credit card on any receipt. so -- as long as there's no additional information on that receipt, there's no reason to worry about i.d. theft with those. >> okay. that's good, good to know. the next question comes from miyanna. she wants to know, if there are age, height or weight restrictions for front-seat passengers in cars. >> we contacted d.c., virginia and maryland for the answer to this question and all three say there's no legal age, height or weight when children are able to sit in the front seat, except for rear-facing infants. hower, the district department of motor vehicles maryland state highway administration and virginia dmv all require that children below the age of eight be properly restrained in a car seat or a booster. virginia recommends thatholl

evidence of the offensive manslaughter that tends to show that dr. conrad murray committed the said criminal offense. during the search, police confiscated cards, emails, computers, a suspension from a houston hospital and vials of two drugs. a drug for weight loss was found in a dosage that can easy be obtained on the internet without a prescription. the other drug seized was a muscle relaxant and sleep aid. >> they're looking at dr. murray, seriously investigating him for manslaughter. and looking for any piece of evidence that will help them put a case together against him. >> reporter: through his attorney, the doctor has denied wrongdoing. autopsy results expected next week could influence possible charges. mur ri, a cardiologist, was hiredly jackson at a monthly salary of $150,000. murray was at jackson's los angeles home and found the singer not breathing. he administered cpr.
