columbia, maryland. 43-yr- nolea biad ooollfthew n a -y48ear-eld kim felix ofewol market. and 39-year-old george tutor of westminster. three of the victims worked for advanced helicopter concepts, a company which also has a charitable foundation aimed at at-risk youth. >> this is very unfortunate, when you have people who are really obviously trying to help others in the community. and have this kind of outcome. >> reporter: they were on an event for the foundation that ended at about 8:00 p.m. >> the pilot waited two hours to leave, because of weather conditions. so the flights completed, we believe about 8:00. and he finally departed hagerstown, about 10:15 to return back to frederick. >> reporter: there had been reports of dpog in the area of the crash, in higher altitudes. and the arc flash that witnesses reported appeared to have come from a helicopter striking power lines. >> the helicopter was flying very low. and we know, at least i was told

that the wires that were struck were about 70 feet off the ground. so that gives you a sense of what height the helicopter was flying. we also know one of the wit witnesses reported that weather was clear, low to the ground and very foggy the higher up you got. >> reporter: one of the questions in the investigation is whether the power lines brought the helicopter down or whether it struck the power lines already in the crash descent. the wreckage of the helicopter is going to be moved someplace where the ntsb can pour over it and try and answer some of those questions. we've got storms rolk through parts of our area this evening. let's go straight up to bob in the storm nter >> not as widespread as yesterday. there was one around fredericksburg and another one has come out of the mountains of west virginia. there it is. i'll draw it in. it is a warning because of the possibility ofomehail. it's moving along about 20, 25

0041 block of hummer road in anondale. jackie benson has more. jackie, what have you learn? >> reporter: we learned that police were called here by a 911 call just after 4:00 this afternoon. i'm joined now by officer eddie ascarati of the foix fairfax county police. >> that's correct, we got a call for this address and officer went inside and found a woman had was dead within the home. >> reporter: what's gng on right now, you have a very large police presence here. >> at this point, the detectives, the crime scene investigators, the supporting staff are all assembling, getting their game plan together in terms of how they're going to conduct this investigation. you may have heard the sirens pulling up. that's our command bus. they have a place they can meet and discuss what the next step is going to be. >> reporter: does the neighborhood play a role in this at this point? i seeing officers going from building to building and house to house. it's a combined residential and commercial area? >> every investigation is a

mr. obama caused a stir after saying that the cambridge, massachusetts police had acted stupidly. this afternoon, the president said he could have calibrated his words differently. reporter chris clackham has that story. >> reporter: the surprise visit at the briefing by the president follows his remarks this week that cambridge, massachusetts police sergeant, james crowley, acted stupidly in the arrest of harvard professor, henry gates. >> i actually just had a conversation with sergeant jim crowley. >> reporter: admitting he contributed to the uproar, the president said he could have calibrated his words differently. and put a bit of the blame on both sides. >> there was an overreaction. in pulling ploe fesor gates out of his home. professor gates probably overreacted as well. >> reporter: at an earlier news conference, crowley didn't speak, but his supporters did. saying crowley went by the book

in arresting gates last week. >> after his own intensive investigation, the cambridge police department also expressed its support for sergeant crowley. clearing him of any wrongdoing. >> crowley tells boston's nbc affiliate, whdh thursday that gates was immediately confrontational, when he and another officer responded to a call about two black males breaking into the house. >> i said i'm sergeant crowley from the cambridge police department and i'm investigating a break-in in progress. and he responded why, because i'm a black man in america? in a very agitated tone. >> i demanded to know his name and his badge number. he wouldn't say anything. he wasust very upset. i said, why are you not responding to me? becata me because you're a white police officer and i'm a black man? >> reporter: the disorderly conduct charge gates faced was dropped. although he's said to be contemplating a lawsuit.

while president obama says he's hoping for something else. >> my hope is that as a consequence of this event, this ends up being what's called a teachable moment. >> reporter: chris clackham, news4. wall street continues to see gains, with the dow gaining 23 points to close above 9000. and in other news, the federal minimum wage was raised do $7.25 an hour. two top oba administration officials are putting heads in public over who should insure your money. tracey potts wraps it up for us. >> reporter: the government says risky mortgages and lax credit rules have confused customers and helped drive this economy to the brink. the treasury secretary tells congress one new agency should be in charge of protecting consumers. >> it's not enough to have standards. it's not enough to have rules. it's not enough to state protections. they have to be enforced. >> reporter: but the head of the federal reserve wants to keep

iran. an iranian passenger plane krshed on july 15 this year, killing 168 people. there was chaos at the honduran border today as ousted president, manuel zelaya, attempted to return to his homeland. flanked by supporters and a large military presence, zelaya stepped across the board, waited for military official the to contact him. the interim president has promised to arrest him. he was sent into exile after military forces staged a coupe, coup, accusing zelaya of trying to extend the limits of a presidential term. many hondurans view his actions as an attempt to create a more socialist-leaning government. the government and other governments have condemned the coup. when we come back on news4 at 6 tonight, rescuers are searching the ocean off south carolina for a teenager from maryland who disappeared.

the heavens appear to be a little more settled today. >> yes, but to our north there are a few more thunderstorms. with the doppler radar you can scan and see as it builds up. and then briefly, it will produce perhaps some hail, so warning goes out and then these things go up and down. not as widespread as yesterday, and for folks around frederick county, could be seeing some small hail. outside, this is our sky watcher. yesterday, the clouds were bubbling and there's some instability. we'll still see a few more. and over the weekend, it is

july, our high temperature today, once again, this has been a rather cool july. made it up into the 80s. well below our average high. and we're still, we're still having about the same amount of sunshine that we did yesterday. even with the clouds that have been building up. 83 degrees outside now. southwesterly wind at 9 miles per hour. so our high temperature only made it up into the mid 80s. our rainfall now the same as the driest july ever. even with the rain that we had yesterday. look at the temperatures around the east now. 83 here. 70s to our north. it's been so, so cool up in parts of new england. even though it's a little bit on the humid side. big storm went up through the new england coastline. there's the circulation, and behind it, a little bit of a ripple in the jet stream. early this morning, by the way, tuscaloosa, 63 degrees. right now around us, here's the area of storms to our north. it is up north of baltimore. there are other warnings, that were out around harrisburg and

chambersberg. there's one line moving into frederick county that's past for you folks into parts ever west virginia. i'll zoom in. you can see it may be taking a little turn to the right. so we have to keep an eye on those, some of those storms that cake take a turn to the right can be producing strong winds. heading into clifton estates and farther south towards sommerville. this is the area, sharpsberg has been getting a fair amount of lightning. lower another little cell is trying to get going around winchester. and the cell around fredericksburg is into the northern neck. so this is the one with the warning with it for folks into frederick county until 6:45. riserstown earlier had another half-inch of rain. arlington, for the gardens and lawns around the metro area did get some rain. as the storms move through, another opportunity to see this

evening looking to the west-northwest. to see the international space station and the space shuttle. they'll reach about 40 degrees high in the sky at 10:15 and then youl see it disappear. because it will move into the earth shadow and that will be the end of it. so overnight tonight, what we're going to be seeing is any showers, our winds move to the south-southwest so the humidity will be back and there may be some afternoon thundershowers, especially heading to the mountains of west virginia. 30 seconds, you hear a rumble of, see a flash of lightning and 30 seconds later, hear the rumble of thunder, means the thunderstorms is getting closer. by sunday, a little weak weather front getting near us, so we may see a better chance of thunderstorms on sunday. tomorrow, into the 90s as it will be on sunday. so for this evening. we've got the few thunderstorms out there. not everybody is going to get wet. a rumble of thunder, that one looks like it could be still heading into northern parts of

the impact of the crash was so fierce, the it sent the calvert county patrol car tumbling while the victim's car bumpt into flames. >> i saw the sheriffs car flipping and flipping and a big, big engulf of flames. i looked across. >> a sheriffs department spokesman said the accident happened before 11:00 as deputy wayne wells a another deputy in a second vehicle traveling northbound on route 4 to a domestic disturbance. >> both deputies were responding do a domestic call, an in-progress call. they were running priority 1, which is a lights and sirens response. >> reporter: the victim, initially headed southbound, was attempting to turn left into a subdivision when her car was struck by the deputy. both she and deputy wells were trapped in their vehicles. the deputy and the trailing car attempted to help. >> she immediately got out and went to thecar. she couldn't get near the car that was in flames. she went and checked the officer. she knelt down and stuff.

and the emergency crews and frlg were here in a matter of minutes. >> reporter: the car's driver, 18 year old, just graduated from northern high school, died in the flames. the deputy had to be freed from his vehiclby firefighters. he is expected to survive his injuries. this is the first time in recent memory a deputy has been involved in a crash that killed a sillian. >> i just want to say that our hearts go ott to the family of the young lady involved. definitely. >> reporter: because the investigation involves one of its own, the calvert county sheriffs department will be assisted by the anne arundel county police and maryland state police. but some residents are already wondering whether it makes sense for officers to run at high speeds on very busy route 4. julie carey, news4, dunkirk, maryland. witnesses say a man struck by a metro train today intentionally put himself in the train's path. it happened at the van ness station around 12:30 this afternoon. that man is still alive. he was taken to the hospital. trains are now running normally

on that section of the red line. they had been single-tracking for a couple of hours between cleveland park and friendship heights. metro tells us passengers can still expect some residual delays, delays are also expected to continue on the red line this weekend. as transportation officials continue their investigation into last month's deadly metro crash near the tacoma and fort totten stations. it was a heroin bust tt rocked the virginia suburbs, more than a dozen people arrested in connection with the drugs that resulted in four overdose deaths. many of those arrested were high school students. and today, the last defendant in the ca was sentenced, 20-year-old skylar schnippel received a sentence of 20 years in prison for supplying the drugs that resulted in the overdoze death of his girlfriend. keith garvin with our report. >> reporter: a relationship that took a dark andas deadly turn. today, a 20-year-old northern virginia man was sentenced for supplying his girlfriend with a lethal dose of heroin. the young woman's father said no

a lesson that skylar schnippel will have 20 years to think about in federal prison. from the u.s. district court in alexandria, keith garvin, news4. >> skylar schnippel pleaded not guilty during his trial. he has ten days to appeal. another swine flu patient has died in maryland. it is the fourth death attributed to the h1n1 virus in maryland. health officials tell us the patient was an adult from the eastern shore, who did not have any previous medical conditions or risk factors. officials say it's a reminder of how serious swine flu can be, even for healthy adults. the search for a missing maryland teen continued offer the coast of south carolina today, officials have identified the teenager as 13-year-old lonnie hill, in south carolina for a baseball tournament. no word on where in maryland hill is from. he disappeared in the waters off myrtle beach yesterday, before 1:00 p.m. friends say they were swimming with the teen when he went under water and never resurfaced.

volunteers linked arms while searching the shores near myrtle beach. the coast guard and local air and water rescue teams helped with the search. florida college no longer under lockdown following reports of a gunman on campus. warning alarms began blairing on the university of south florida campus, as officials warned students to stay inside and lock their doors. a gunman was reportedly seen near the school's bioscience building. the campus was given the all-clear about an hour and a half later. a school spokesperson said she was unaware if any shots had been fired, or if anyone was taken into custody. an arkansas court has handed down a guilty verdict in the trial of a man who led a controversial religious sect. today, tony alamo was convicted of forcing girls, some as young as nine, to travel across state lines to have sex. crowds outside the courthouse clapped while the authoriti took the 74-year-old preacher away. the five girls involved in the

case, between the ages of 17 and 33, said alamo married them while they were sti under age. he led a multimillion-dollar ministry before his arrest last fall. now the latest on the michael jackson death investigation, a search warrant confirms that the singer's personal doctor, conrad murray, is the target of a criminal investigation into the singer's death. and the august tribute concert to honor the pop star has been called off. lee anne gregg has the latest. >> reporter: the office and storage unit of michael jackson's personal physician was searched wednesday in houston. court documents are the first public confirmation the doctor is a crime suspect. a search warrant says quote investigators were looking for evidence of the offense of manslaughter that tends to show that dr. conrad murray committed the said criminal offense. during the search, police confiscated rolo t ex confiscated rolo dex cards,te emails, computers, a suspension notice from a houston hospital and vials of two drugs.
