rieger. jim and dorian are off tonight. this is a story we first reported last night. a helicopter drops from the night sky, comes crashing down next to a busy highway. today, we learned that the chopper w traveling from hagers town to frederick after an event that offered helicoptr rides to raise money for trucked youth. on board, three co-workers of a maryland helicopter company and a woman who won a raffle for a free chopper ride. michael flynn spoke with the woman's husband and joins us in the studio to tell us their story. >> reporter: wendy, loved ones tried to talker out of going on the helicopter ride but her husband told me tonight nothing could stop her adventurous spirit. the charred helicopter wreckage was unrecognizable. before it crashed on the median next tth,70i-i-70,ow dstntlaghnl nt dn last night, killingow oboboard, three men andwoman. arthman. the kim f felix of new market had won the helicopter ride in a raffle.

>> she just won this trip. i think there were a lot of people that tried to influence her not to be on the helicopter. >> reporter: felix'sç husband says the 48-year-old mother of three daughters had a magnetic personality. she was a pta volunteer and brownie troop leader. she won theelicopter ride by putting her business card in a drawing during a recent chamber of commerce event. >> my wife is very independent spirit. and liked to try a lot of different things. and she kept saying this is once in a lifetime opportunity for her. >> the three other victims were working for the frederick-based advanced helicopter youth foundation and just finished a charity event in hagerstown. the pilot was 24-year-old jeff nordaas of combia, and also george tutor, and 43-year-old niall booth of new market. booth was a consultant and fatherf two teens who friends saloved helping others. >> part of me has got to believe

that, heck, if you're -- if this is to be yourend, he was doing what he really loved. >> reporter: ntsb investigators say because of bad weather, nordaas waited two hours before flying, right before the crash witnesses reported seeing the chopper flying low, where power lines run 70 feet above ground. witnesses said they saw sparks before the chopper came crashing down. it was a disastrous end to a trip aimed at helping to raise money for troubled young people. >> it's a testimony to, you know, the kind of things that she was involved in. >> i talked with pilot jeff nordaas's brother earlier and he told me the young man was an inspiration to everyone around him. the 24-year-old took up flying because his father is a pilot much the cause of this crash, wendy, is still under investigation. back to you. >> michael flynn, thank you, michael. a maryland teenager is dead after a fiery crash involving a wo sheriff'sdeputy. ap hispeed hat l this morning at the intersection of route 4 and apple way.

the officer was responding to a domestic call when a struck a vehicle that crossed in had front of him. witnesses say t impact of that crash was so fierce that the deputy's car flipped several times. the young teen driver's car burst into flames. the 18-year-old was a recent high school graduate who died at the scene. police are searching for the person who tied up a woman and tabbed her to d fa sifatyco un fairfax countydpesith ineen this happenedthn e 4100 block of hummer road in annandale. jackie vincent joins us live with the latest. jackie? >> reporter: wendy, the name of the victim said to be in her late 40s or early 50s has not been released, and it is not clear at this point how long she has been dead. news 4 has learned the house did have its own security camera system, and that will hopefully help police with their investigation. hours after the grim discovery, investigators continued to examine the house and surrendering area for evidence. a woman was found, tied up and

stabbed in the bathroom of a home based acupuncture business. friends and clients gathered, trying to find outf the victim was the well-liked owner of the business. >> she is just a wonderful lady. that's all. she liked to help people. i can't believe that someone would do that to her. >> reporter: the victim was discovered by an acupuncture client who arrived about 4:00 p.m. to find the front door locked. she went to the back door and found it open and wept inside and found the victims. inspectors requested a korean language interpreter. the house is in on an an detail neighborhood that is both commercial and residential. next door, a korean restaurant has three security cameras. the one closest to the victim's home may have recorded images of the suspect coming or going. >> they're in the collection of evidence. and it's going to takeome time. it may take a couple of days at this point. as a result, hummer road and this section will be closed throughout the night tonight, guaranteed, and maybe even

and, you know, so to the extent that my choice of words didn't illuminate, but rather contributed to more media frenzy, i think that was unfortunate. >> mr. obama says he hopes the controversy becomes a teachable moment, and encrages people to listen to each other more. the union that represents metro's train operators wants to know more about the investigation into last month's deadly accident that killed nine people. investigators are looking at a faulty circuit at the crash site. metro has been testing the circuits twice a day since this accident. the workers' union would like to get a look at terhese tests, saying ast alom ws,ulwodse like to see dao watch for warning signs. transparency is needed. a metro train operator is on leave after he accidentally opened the wrong set of doors. this happened last night on the green line at the waterfront seu

imagine surviving a fall from 2,000 feet and then wanting toe do it again. ted davenport did just that, and it was caught on camera, as you see, while jumping in colorado. davenport's parachute didn't open at the last second. it slowed him down, but he did hit the ground hard. davenport says he has aouple of bruised lungs. just a couple of bruised lungs. isn't that all you have? a bruise on his spine, and yes, he is jumping again. there's new information about some local high school students quarter teened in china following a s flu scare. a parent tells us four are still in quarantine. those who were released have been transferred to another hotel. the students are from several schools in our area. they were quarantined after several came down with the swine flu last week, shortly after arriving in beijing for an educational tour. the stocks rose again today andñ investors are gaining a lo of confidence that the u.s.

economy is improving. the dow jones industrl closedus at 9093 today, up 350 points since monday. it completed thedow's best o-week rally since 2000. yesterday, the dow closed above 9000 for the first time since january. part of what drovetoday's rally was posivero news from europe, ewherhe t economic retraction seems to be slowing. investors seem to have shrugged off the change that has many business owners worried. 4.5 million workers got a raise today as the federal minimum wage increased 70 cents. critics say that coup stall hiring and force small businesses to pass the cost on to consumers. supporters, however, said that the increase is going to boost consumer spending. and when we come back, some residents in northwest d.c. being extra careful tonight over concern that the roof top burglar may have struck again. so could a little money help ease your pain? how just even the thought of moolah can make you feel better. and we're getting ready for a steamy, hot weekend.

d.c. police are trying to figure out whether the so-called roof top burglar has struck again. a church was burglarized today. it appears the burglar got in through the roof top skylight. police say it's too early to tell if it's the same burglar who struck in the same area weeks ago. while reviewing security video of a robbery, the store clerk appears to be assisting an older woman, but moments later a man rushes in, there he is, jumps the counter and then that older woman pulls a gun. turns out they were working together as a robbery team. and don't you know, the female is actually a man in a dress and a wig. he has been dubbed the drive-through bandit, and police say he doesn't bother to disguise himself. the man is accused of robbing as

many as ten fast food restaurants in texas in the last ten days. police say he just drives up to the window with a gun, demands cash, there he is, and in most cases, the employees shut the window and walk away. so far, there haven't been any injuries. you might want to think twice about how many bags you check when you're taking an american airlines flight, because it's going to cost you more. the carrier announced today the first bag will now cost $20, up from 15 bucks. the second bag will cost 30 bucks. change takes effect on all tickets purchased after august 13th on most domestic flights. there are no bag fees for international flights. . several other major airlines have also announced $5 increases on checked bags. and cost-cutting measures could make travel less convenient this fall. major carriers plan to offer fewer non-stops, and possibly higher ticket prices, and fees in the coming months. airlines are desperate to raise revenue as they head into their traditionally slow period. six of the nine major u.s. airlines made money last

exactly average. we were a little cooler than average. and so many parts of the country have avoided a long, extended period of heat and humidity. we're right now into the 70s. over the last 12 hours, a ripple to our north, that was the reason some nasty storms up parts of pennsylvania. right now, in and around, i would say pretty much all dissipated. a couple for you folks around frederiksberg, but no lightning. it may be moving into the northern neck, sort of good for the lawns and gardens, more around washington. there just isn't anything going on now. and things will really settle down as we go through the remainder of the night. a couple more around culpepper. but nothing here. then up into northern parts of maryland, around baltimore and northern maryland, boy, there were some nasty cells earlier today. look at u;monkdon, maryland, 4 inches of rain and northern parts of montgomery county a
