utso heast d.c. police say the victim is in critical condition this morning. just a few hours later in northeast d.c., d.c. police were called to the 1800 block of m street for a rort of a shooting. police discovered an adult male shot to death. no word of arrests in either case. now to that deadly chopper crash in maryland. four people were killed when a helicopter plummeted on interstate 70 thursday night. this morning we know the chopper was traveling from hagers down to frederick after anhe event t offer helicopter ride force troubled youth. on board were three co-workers of a maryland helicopter company and a woman who won a raffle for a free chopper ride that woman's husband is sharing his story. he said he tried to talk his wife out of going on the helicopter ride but nothing could stop her. >> reporter: the charred helicopter wreckage was unrecognizable. itiann ttoed mn

eth lanes of i-70nd les of i-70 board. everyone was killed on board. the woman, kim felix of new market had won the helicopter ride in a raffle. >> she just won this trip. i think there were a lot of people that tried to influence her not to be on the helicopter. >> reporter: felix's husband says the 48-year-old mother of three daughters had a magnetic personality. she was a pta volunteer and brownie troop leader. she won the helicopter ride by putting her business card in a drawing during a recent chamber of commerce event. >> my wife is very independent spirit andiked to try a lot of different things. and she kept saying this is a once in a lifetime opportunity for her. >> reporter: the three other victims were working for the frederick-based advanced helicopter youth foundation and just finished a charity event in hagerstown. the pilot was 24-year-old jeff nordaas of columbia, and also on board, 39-year-old george tutor, and 43-year-old niall booth of new market.

booth was a consultant and father of two teens who friends say loved helping others. >> part of me has got to believe that, heck, if you're -- if this is to be your end, he was doing what he really loved. >> reporter: ntsb investigators say because of bad weather, nordaas waited two hours before flying, right before the csh witnesses reported seeing the chopper flying low, where power lines run 70 feet above ground. witnesses said they saw sparks before the chopper came crashing down. it was a disastrous end to a trip aimed at helping to raise money for troubled young people. >> it's a testimony to, you know, the kind of things that she was involved in. >> reporter: michael flynn, new 4 today. >> the brother of the pilot said he was an inspiration to everyone around him. the 24-year-old took up flying because his father was a pilot. investigators don't know what caused the accident. a maryland teen isead d ear teryie crash involving a

c sheriff' deputy. it happened late yesterday morning at the intersection of route 4 and apple way. the officer was responding to a domestic call when a struck a vehicle that crossed in had front of him. witnesses say the impact of that crash was so fierce that the deputy's car flipped several times. the young teen driver's car burst into flames. the 18-year-old was a recent high school graduate who died at the scene. fairfax county police are dbeabd d ftototheariday insida fa ir fairfax countysfa on hummer road. jackie vincent has the latest. >> hours after the grim discovery, investigators continued to examine the house and surrendering area for evidence. a woman was found, tied up and stabbed in the bathroom of a home-based acupuncture business. friends and clients gathered, trying to find out if the victim was the well-liked owner of the business. >> she is just a wonderful lady. that's all. she liked to help people. i can't believe that someone would do that to her.

>> reporter: the victim was discovered by an acupuncture client who arrived about 4:00 p.m. to find the front door locked. she went to the back door and found it open and then went inside and found the victim. officers who responded requested a korean language interpreter. the house is in a neighborhood that is both commercial and residential. next door, a korean restaurant has three security cameras. the one closest to the victim's home may have recorded images of the suspect coming or going. >> they're in the collection of evidence. and it's going to take some time. it may take a couple of days at this point. >> reporter: investigators would like to talk to anyone who had an appointment at that acupuncture clinic in the last few days. korean speaking investigators and interpreters are available. the district is getting a boost in the fight against aids. house lawmakers approved a bill that would lift a ban on federal money for needle exchange

never repeated. a metro trn opator is on leave after he accidentally opened the wrong set of doors. this happened last night on the green line at the waterfront seu station. a passenger told the "washington post," the riders were surprised when doors opened up to the wall opposite the platform. no one was injured. metro operators have been opening doors manually for just over a year because of problems with the automated door system. the operator is on paid leave pending the investigational. the father of a high school student who died of a drug overdose is speaking out after his daughter's boyfriend was sentenced. a dozen people were arrested in the drugs that resulted in four overdose deaths. friday 20-year-old skylar was sentenced to 20 years in prison for supplying the drugs that ultimately killed his girlfriend. >> a relationship thaoo tk a dark and deadly turn. a 20-year-old northern virginia man was sentenced for supplying his girlfriend with a lethal dose of heroin. the young woman's father says no amount of time could bring back

stocks rose again friday as investors gained confidence that e u.s. economy is improving. the dow jones closed at 9,093 up more than 350 points since monday. it completed the dow's best two-week rally since 2000. thursday the dow closed above 9,000 for the first time since january. part of what drove the rally wae positive news from europe where the economic retraction seems to be slowing. >> the housing market is showing signs of promise but the road to economic recovery will be long. the head of the federal reserve shared his forecast with congress on friday and cnbc has the recap. >> reporter: it was a week of cautious optimism. the dow soaring hundreds of points higher and the nasdaq surging up 10% for the week. earnings results showing many companies are doing better.

cost cutting and layoffs helped many firms to realize strong results. others like caterpillar, intel and pfizer raised outlooks for the rest of the year. some like apple, hershey and hasbro sold a ton of whatever it is they make, but lots of banks and credit card companies are stuffering heavy consumer loan losses and slower pc sales and that put a dent in microsoft's bottom line. ben bernanke summed things up by telling congress the u.s. economy right now is too weak to start raising interest rates. unemployment will rise, and that a recovery will be slow in coming. good news in housing this week. home vacancies hitting multi-year lows in june, and sales of existing homes shot up 3.5% marking three months in a row of gains. the national minimum wage went up to 7.25 an hour. cnbc now celebrating his 20th year. you might want to think

>> reporter: today the center for disease control issued new broader guidelines regarding vaccination force the upcoming flu season. now recommending that children from six months to 18 years old be immunized for seasonal flu. while the vaccine provides little to no protection against h1n1 health officials want to prevent people from being infected with both at once. meanwhile, clinical trials are starting right now on vaccines to fight h1n1 which officials expect to continue to spread this fall. >> we do expect when children get back together at school that we'll see a rise in cases. we don't know exactly where or how hard hit schools will be. >> reporter: so far in the united states, health officials suspect there have been more than 1 million cases. though only 43,771 cases have been confirmed. 302 deaths. 24% of those have been people between the ages of 5 and 24. the encouraging news, officials say, is the h1n1 virus is milder than first feared.

this is not typical battery change operation. astronauts went on an extra long seven and a half-hour space walk on friday. they were installing four new batteries at the international space station. part of the work started thursday but they had to cut the space walk short because of high carbon dioxide levels inside one crew member's suit. this was the fourth space walk where the crew delivered the time piece of a japanese lab to
